Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Spurred by the often one-sided view of Indian culture, an Indian entrepreneur and his wife created this bi-level lounge as an ode to Bombay after dark. The interior mixes orange, red and purple cushioned seating with earth-toned walls and candles. The Indian street food menu--frankees, kebabs and chicken lollipops--pays homage to the culture, but the 20- and 30-somethings inside are more interested in partying with their friends than picking up any cultural cues.

The Draw
Though not the most exclusive club in the neighborhood, the lure of bottle service pulls nightcrawlers from Manhattan and beyond. Early in the evening, small parties dominate the space and the music tends toward deep house; as the night wears on, hip-hop turns up the heat. The specialty cocktails, many with fruit bases like mango, are sweet and strong. The balcony, often reserved for VIPs, affords a pleasing view of the scene.

The Inside Scoop

  1. On the Menu - Earth serves an Indian food menu every day starting at 4pm.
  2. The Extras - The dance floor opens up on the weekends after 11pm.
  3. Where to Sit - The mezzanine section under the cabana, overlooking the west side of Manhattan, opens in the spring.

Overpriced... has potential... needs a better DJ

by dhallsim

When we walked in, no cover which was cool....i went for a cousin bday party and left before eatting..Big MISTAKE! The food was a bit over priced being that we only ordered some Kulchas( Nans) and Varitey of Kebas.it came out to $175... being the food wasn't that good... i felt that it was watered down not very authentic indian food.... which is ok since i didn't get sick after eatting it! but no one wants to get ripped off

my advice is your better off going to Richmond Hill or Jackson Heights and having some great Indian food....Don't go here to Eat!

after dinner they moved the tables and it turned into a club... The DJ wasn't playing any good songs.( i guess i didn't like the music) ... but there was a good crowd... I enjoyed my self but i felt like i got ripped off on the meal...If you want indian food your better off eating in queens.... come to earth for the party

Pros: good ambience good service nice place to bring a girl

Cons: overpriced indian food for couples trying to be romantic

Great Lunch

by DrinkingupNYC

I go to Earth kind of a lot for lunch. it is 50% off if you eat in instead of doing take out. The service is fast and the food is very good. I highly reccomend this restaurant for lunch if you are in the area.

Pros: 50% off lunch!

Fantastic food. Superb service. All around good time. I would definitely go back.

by elysianmoon

My friends and I ate here at 6:30pm on a Sunday. FOOD: Entrees are not put on your main plate; they come in their own bowls ? which we loved, as it allowed us to more easily sample each other?s dishes. Great for a newcomer to Indian cuisine, like me. Also great for those practicing portion control. Entrees do NOT include side dishes, so for a party of four or more, ordering a bread basket for the table instead of separate sides is a good deal for everyone. The food was outstanding. The spiciness of the dishes was just right. For dessert, I had the Chocolate Dynamite Cake ? which is a misnomer. There was much more mousse than cake. It was excellent, but very dense. It?s almost worth the extra money to order kulfi (Indian ice cream) and eat them together. Specialty cocktails are made strong and were nearly half price when we went (might have been part of a Happy Hour deal). SERVICE: You will get a phone call to confirm your reservations. Our server did NOT give us a hassle when we asked for separate checks. Everyone's orders arrived in a timely manner. One of my friends mentioned to our server that one of her favorite Indian dishes was not on the menu. She eventually decided to get an on-menu dish. When her entree came, the server also brought a small cup of the off-menu dish (and didn?t charge us for it). SCENE: The place was empty when we arrived, but started filling up by the time we left (around 9-10pm). Dress code seemed to be dressy casual. DECOR: Beautiful and comfortable. The table spacing and air conditioning was just right. The music was good and not too loud or intrusive to conversation. Discovering that there are four single-person unisex bathrooms was a pleasant surprise (and they were clean!). LOCATION: Desolate. I am female and would NOT feel comfortable standing on that street for too long by myself after dark. Travel in packs, ladies.

Pros: Service, Food, Decor, Bathroom

Cons: Location, Some menu items are pricey

Horrible music, waterdown drinks and terrible service

by Tajmahalspirit

The website might look great, but the restaurant was a nightmare. They abrutly closed the kitchen before we could order our dinner at 10:30PM, to set up for a dance area. Then they began to play music from Eddie Murphy, the last time I heard Eddie Murphy's songs was in the 80's. The drinks were overprised and tasted like water. My girlfriend's and I bolted from this restaurant and had a excellent time at Buddakkan.

Pros: Nice website

Cons: bad food, bad music and bad attitude by staff

Good Fun!

by McKayL

Food was decent. Price was reasonable, and place has great decor. After dinner the place turns into a bar/club. I was celebrating there for my 31st, and had a blast. The crowd was good, and the age group was late 20's I think, at least it seemed that way. There is a loft area that can be reserved, for a small group. Nice place, good fun.

5 star and even more, 2 thumbs up!!

by sandrine1604

i just celebrated my birthday party at Earth this past saturday (Apr 12 2008). My friends are used to places such as Cain, Pink Elephant, Cipriani's,.... So when I came up with the idea of Earth, everyone was really skeptical. I didn't even know the place! It was my first time there and already on the phone the boss was amazingly nice, easygoing and soooo convenient. We were about 100 people in the place and everyone had the best time. The DJ is awesome, the food is great. One advice, if you're planning your party early enough, you might even get a chance to book the beautiful mezzanine.
Now just GOOO!

Pros: waiters are so caring about you, and so eager to know how they can make your time there better!

must experience this earthy place!!!

by neel2412

We've been to this cool, 2-level Indian Lounge several times and consistently have had an outstanding meal every, single time! The quality of the food, especially the non vegeterian dishes, is much better than most of the other local Indian restaurants in Manhattan, and is always delicious. The staff is friendly and warm,We've introduced many Indian friends to Earth, who have had the same experience like us. Love their bar area and some of the drinks they have on their wine list, another fav of ours is the fried okra and badami shrimp they have on their menu, and to end a lovely meal one can taste their kulfi.....which my friends... we can never stop at just one!!!!

Beware of ASTRONOMICAL PRICES for teeny tiny food

by annd00117

This is the worst priced restaurant in NYC! We had 14 people at our party and they charged us for 18 people according to "house policy." The food that was given was decent but barely enough to feed 18 people and not worth the bill, which came out to close to $1000. The manager wouldn't change anything. DO NOT GO HERE.

Pros: Nice candles

Cons: The Bill

A COMPLETE MESS

by RuinedValentineDay

I took my boyfriend here for Valentine's Day. Reservations were for 8:00. At 10:30, we hadn't even received our main course (only a glass of wine and an appetizer, with about 45 minutes between each). At 10:40, they brought over my main course (which was cold). My boyfriend's never arrived. There was no naan, no rice, no apologies. I don't even remember what our waiter looked like, because I barely ever saw him. Just the poor busboy who kept refilling our water as the hours went by. I don't know why the hell they would think I would eat my dinner without waiting for my date?and on Valentine's Day! At ten to 11 we walked out, disappointed and hungry. We spent the remainder of the night at a bar where we very promptly received delicious mini burgers. I'm never going to Earth NYC again. I wanted to do something special for the special person in my life. And they completely ruined it.

BRILLIANT VALENTINE!

by KevinCrawford

Took my girlfriend to earth to celebrate valentines...and must say we had a brilliant evening!! The place was packed...but it was still so romantic...I guess the candles on the wall really helped :)...My girl was so impressed with my choice...it was the best Indian food she has had in a while...she grew up in London and has been raving about the Indian food there....I guess earth proved to be quite a match! We simply loved the lamb chops and the sea bass...The Indian desert was fab...forget what the name is...but its a spiced icecream! The only problem was that we waited a bit for our food....but boy it was well worth the wait!!

Pros: Beautiful and romantic

Cons: Food took some time to be served to us...

worst experience on the earth

by nickella

I came to visit new york city for new year and decided to go see club earth. it was the biggest mistake I ever made!!!!!
it was horrible service, waitress and security!!!! The manager disappeared after collecting the money along with our waitress, after she inssisted to tip her ahead!!! 50$ !!!! People were drunk and already sat on our table! I almost got in fight twice!!! So I decided to ask one of the bouncers to come and help me to get the people off my table which by the way I paid for 200 $ VIP seats!!!! You know what he told me? F. YOU AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!! I COULD DIE THERE AND HE WILL NOT MOVE A FINGER!!!! I got so devastated and so angry I just start crying and got out of there ASAP!!! THEY JUST RUINED MY NEW YEAR CELEBRATION!!! I AM STILL ANGRY!!! UP TO ME THEY DONT DESERVE ANY STARS!

Pros: nothing

Cons: everything!!!!!!!

What on Earth!??!??!

by vinefly

Before midnight, this place tends to be rather empty, while they hold crowds outside to make it appear as "The Place To Be." When it finally does fill up, the bar is all the way to the back of this narrow space, and is rather frustrating to get to with the masses of unwashed bodies, ten deep, blocking your way. As a female, I have never had a problem getting in, but many of my guy friends have been hassled at the door, with the bouncers trying to wrangle up to $30/pp for the dubious privilege of entering, despite having guestlists set up in advance. The normal weekend crowd is pretentious and clueless, with music that is rather unexciting and poorly mixed. This place is all flash, without substance. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Pros: Parking is generally easy to find in the neighborhood.

Cons: Everything else.

Good Service, Great Food, Very Nice Place

by tygrlilee

Took my boyfriend there lastnight for his birthday. We made reservations beforehand. When we got there our table was waiting and the staff was very nice and attentive. Never had Indian food before and decided we should give it a try. Not really knows much about the dishes we both just picked something and both dishes were good. The food was great, the drinks were good, there was nice music playing in the background. We had a good time there. The waiter was very nice and attentive. Loved it there. Place looks great, romantic, candles all around. Would def recommend and would go back!

Pros: Food, Ambience, Service

Cons: Location- have to walk a few lonely blocks from the train station

Horrible service, bland food!!!!

by fasaria

The people that run this place are unorganized and rude, you get twenty diffrent stories from everyone. I had a part of 21 people and requested the table upstairs, I had a lot of questions and never got any answers until i left my cc for a deposit. I was suppose to get a free bottle of champagne b/c I had 20 people, what they did not tell me was that you had to order a bottle first to get the champagne. The cheapest bottle was $300 and we were charged $45 dollars per bottle to be served to the table. Not to mention that 18 of guest arrived ontime and I was told that we all had to be there to be seated, I reminded her that I wasn't going to be rushed eating. Sure enough I had the manager (who smelled like he had not showered in months) ontop of my guest rushing everything!!!!!!!! The food was bland the service horrible, the music lame. Never again will I be going there EVER!!!

No Cocktail Happy Hour

by squickedy

My boyfriend and I went there to meet with friends. Since we were there first and it was before 8pm (Happy Hour time) we sat at the bar and had cocktails! Then I got the bill - 44 Dollars!!! I asked the waitress if they dont have happy hour and she said only for beer and open drinks... hmmmm... Their Homepage says happy hour for Cocktails!!! I was like...ok no problem... Then, by the time we wanted to get seated our reserved table was already taken!!!!!!!!!!!! So they put us on a smaller table... which still didnt make me mad! Then we got the food and even tho I think the menu do not over too many choices the food was delicious. At the end of the night, they insisted that somebody at the table had Birthday. Which wasnt true, but they still brought us a Cake for the not existing Birthday Boy!!! AND we got charged for a tiny bad tasting cake 9Dollars!!!!
OVERALL: I would not recommend this restaurant. Even tho the food was delicious, there were too many shady things.... And its not that stylish that it claims to be. Also there are like 15 waiter but nobody really manages to come to take your orders. They charged us the regular price for happy hour prices, charged us for a birthday cake when it was nobodys birthday. Who does that?!?! Weird...

Pros: Food is delicious

Cons: Happy Hour for Cocktails?! Birthday Cake...

Velvet Rope Outside, Nobody Inside

by no_rsvp

This restaurant tries too hard to be cool and compete with the well established PARK next door. The velvet rope in the evening doesn't reveal how empty the restaurant/bar is inside. The beautifully decorated restaurant with candlelit walls and bronze buddha at the entrance does not reflect the SALTY food and poor service! Every dish my friends ordered had an underlying good but SALTY flavor. Were the chef's tastebuds numb?!!! What was especially offputting was the horrible wait staff - our waiter was nowhere in sight, plates piled up on our tables without being collected, water glasses were not filled and when our waiter finally came, he was RUDE, RUDE, RUDE.

The ambience at Earth would have been perfect for a date or even a nice evening out with friends, but the food and service were so poor that I would never go back to this restaurant ever again!!!

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Poor service and food

Awfull! I would *&^*# myself before ever going back to EARTH NYC!!

by jeanbabine

First: MR. Manager: STOP TELLING YOUR FRIENDS TO WRITE POSITIVE REVIEWS ABOUT THAT DUMP OF YOURS!! I went to Earth yesterday for a birthday party and the disappointment was almost total. The cheesy decor bough" at URBAN OUTFITTERS (the one in union square) was so tacky ...It all started with a 20 minute wait to get our two gins, one with tonic and one with sprite. At one point looking in the direction of the bar i noticed my two drinks ready and waiting to go and the barman sipping from the straw of one of them. He could't remember wich was with tonic and wich was with sprite i guessed. Still, pretty disguting way to find out knowing this is the same straw intended for the customer. Second, i am asking our waiter wich we had to have fetch by the busboy since he was M.I.A. for 15 minutes. The man arrives and i ask for the description of the plate i intended to have. "it's very good, my favorite plate" is what i get for an answer. Still, i ask my question again "could you describe it to me a little bit please" again he repeats the same words. The man had no clue about what he was selling! Then once the apps were served we had to fight with the bussers to keep them. They were removing our apps plate while we still had then on our forks and in our hands!! Com'on! Let me finish THEN take the plate! Our entrees arrive. (the food is delicious BTW) and we waive and wait to get our waiters attention to have a bottle of wine but he is in great conversation with the barman at the other of the room (WITCH IS COMPLETELY EMPTY) and turns his back to us.. At the end of this nightmare we were charged 20% gratuity and when i asked the manager to lighten that charge due to the awfulness of everything, he then threatened me and became physical!! This place is just hell!! I am so surprised it is still open. It has to be "MOB" owned! I come to the sad conclusion that everything good written about this place were comments PAID FOR. Not by real custommers who REALLY went there!

Pros: none and less

Cons: sad, really sad...

SIMPLY DIVINE..

by ruchi76

Been to Earth a couple of times for drinks and have loved it every time...decided to try the food as well this time. I had some friends coming in from out of town and were in the mood for some Indian Food. We went there this past Wednesday...and had a great time! Their Jaitooni Kebab, Tandoori Bataer and Badami Jhinga were TO DIE FOR!! We looovvved the Rasmalai - Desert....it simply melted in our mouth. Must say this is the best Indian food NYC has to offer! and trust me I can get very picky (since I am an Indian myself) The martinis were yummy specially the Mango Martini...Service wasnt the best but with food this GOOD you can overlook that....The decor is great as well, the place has high ceilings and has a very open feel to it ...something not very common in NYC. To sum it it up I thought our experience was SIMPLY DIVINE!

Excellent Food!!!

by soniarai

Food was simply remarkable with an incredible ambience. The light music in the background was just perfect. I had seen the website before going in and you have to eat at Earth to enjoy the food with its very romantic surrounding. The appetizers are very good and even their large plates were great. I think their new menu is fabulous and the Paneer items are a ?must try dish?. Their menu includes a variety of dishes and they make it to your liking. I would say make a reservation just so that you can walk in and have great food and not need to wait. Earth NYC has become one of my top fav places to be at. Try it out and you will love it too.

My friend had the Shrimp with almond crusted coating, super delishis and I had the curried potatoes with peas and one of their salads that we all splitt .Plus dont forget to try the samosa (we had the lamb one) deep fried i guess and it had this awesome green and red sauce on a side .My friends are

We stopped in on Friday night on a friend's recommendation... it was a great place. I made reservation for a table for 10 of us. We ended up being more like 15; they were great accommodating us. The hostess was really terrific. She gave us a cabana on the 2nd floor. The atmosphere was simply great. The crowd of interesting, good looking people. Earth NYC

by angelad33

My boyfriend, who is South Indian, insisted that I write a review of this place. In his words, the food is just like home. We had the samosa as an appetizer, which was simply delicious. We also had the chicken chops and machi, both of which were great. Service was great, although the restaurant was not at all crowded on a Tuesday night at 9. It's very charming, and a good place to bring a small group of friends. The value is great too. With desserts, appetizer, two entrees, rice and appam and two drinks, and tip, we spent under $100.

This restaurant provides incredibly authentic South Asian dishes, especially the curries (i particularly love the basil curry), rice, samosa. The staff are a South Asian family which makes all the difference. You can tell they truly care about what's being served?and it shows. For all you who are new to Indian cuisine, try the chicken dishes, they are simple and a good first time experience. All in all, excellent.

Earth NYC - A Let Down is So Many Ways

by cbernard40

I took 5 of my friends to Earth last Saturday night. I had made the reservation 1 month in advance and called to confirm it the afternoon of the event. We got there at 10:00PM sharp and was told that our table would be ready in 10 minutes. After repeated inquiries about when we would be seated, we finally got a table at 11:00PM with no apologies or an offer for a round of drinks to compensate for the wait (considering I made the reservation a month in advance and called to confirm). When I called to confirm I was told by the Manager that the kitchen closes at 11:00PM and the last order must go in at 10:45PM. I made sure we all got there at 10:00PM sharp. After we were seated I told the Manager that I did not want to have a bunch of people dancing around my table while I was eating (the restaurant turns in to a lounge after 11:00PM). While no one really danced around my table, it did get very crowded and the music turned up 25 decibles. Our waiter was just rude. Obviously annoyned that we were seated so late, he rolled his eyes when we ordered drinks. That was it for me. We ate, paid our bill and left. Our plan was to stay at Earth and enjoy the lounge scene but we decided to go somewhere else. Note: We left no tip for the waiter with a note about alerting him and the manager about the unapologetic poor service and attitude. Beautiful place, friendly bartenders, annoying crowd of pretentious, young, fabulous and broke wannabees.

Pros: The food.

Cons: The Service

New Experience

by michelley82

We stumbled across this restaurant on our way back from shopping in the Meatpacking District. I've never had South Asian food before. Boy, was it delicious. The staff was very sweet, and the food was just lovely. The ambiance is nice as well. It's just a "feel good" type of place. I don't get into Manhattan much, but this restaurant is certainly something that will bring me back to Manhattan often.

Pros: Service

cheese food in a disco

by moosefoot

Menu appealed with its Pan-Asian scope, but the reality was a huge disappointment. The 'exotic' cocktails were watery, our reserved table was not ready for 30 minutes, the food came in splutters, some clearly having being kept warm for the best part of the evening. We never really knew who our waitor was. The palek paneer was made with what appeared to be 'cheese-food', the pad thai was red from some sort of tomato sauce. The potato samosas were excellent however - crisp, warm, not greasy, but not good enough to save the meal. Oh, and by the way, unless you like to eat in want-to-be disco surrounded by large groups of college kids hanging out, don't even think of going here after 10pm.

Pros: potato samosa

Cons: everything else

100% Approved

by sonipatel

I have been to dinner here about 4 times.. including a small, intimate gathering of friends for their birthdays... and my larger, private party of 20 for my 30th birthday dinner. In my humble opinion, this is a best place to throw a party. The wait staff was attentive and we were sat promptly. I had a blast and the evening was quite memorable. I think based on my friends' approvals...there may have more repeat customers!

Pros: Seated promptly, Service, Martinis

Definitely Recommended

I went to Earth for the first time after trying 2 or 3 times before without reservations. You will DEFINITELY need to make a reservation (at least on the weekend). Regardless, it is well worth it. Everything we tried (the Samosa, Methi Chicken, Losbster) was AMAZING. I've eaten at a ton of South Asian restaurants in NYC and this is definitely one of my favorites. Try it out - you won't regret it.

Pros: Service, Spicy & Flavorful Dishes

Try it!!

by deeshi99

Very great casual dining experience with a kick! Most people haven't had tried South Asian food before, so it will be a treat when you take your friends to eat here! Not only is the food well-priced, but everything is so delicious! Most of the items are very spicy, but in a very authentic way. I suggest that you start off with a couple of the appetizers, and when ordering entrees try to grab a variety of things so you can taste each other's dishes. Overall, I had a great time here, the service was nice and it is a good spot to have a casual yet unique experience with some friends or even a date.

Not what i expected

by sj07

It really wasnt what i expected. Looking at the website looked amazing, when i actually got there, it was empy on a friday night at 9pm and it was just a warehouse. It didn't have a restaurant feel to me. I wasn't digging the music either but maybe because it was so dead inside. I thought, well maybe the food is really good and things will get better. So i ordered the spring rolls and it was awful, i've had better at California Pizza Kitchen. There was shredded ice-burg lettuce that took up most of the roll. To me ice-burg lettuce is basiclly water with a crunchy taste, its very cheap lettuce. They serve this soup before you get your meal and it just tastes like a super salty chicken broth. for dinner i had shrimp and my friend had chicken. We were expecting something really great and it seemed like everything could have come from a can. Very generic food. We had to wait a long time for our waiter to check on us and get our order. The drinks were so so, no many choices for wine by the glass. I wouldnt reccomend this place for dinner at all, maybe for drinks, but dont go before 10:30 or 11.

Pros: sitting with pillows behind you on the benches were comfortable

Cons: awful food

Good food, Weird head waiter

by gioia100

I walked into EARTH NYC and instantly fell in love with the decor and ambience. Even the outside door is beautiful. The menu was equally lovely, and our waiter was very knowledgeable and helped us make some good choices with food and wine pairings. I thoroughly enjoyed the food, the daal appetizer is a must have. They also have some fabulous drink specials that are unique! Cilitrano mojito, very interesting. BUT, what RUINED our evening was the waiter!! All through the meal, he was fabulous in terms of the service he provided. At the end of the meal, he asked if we were ready for the bill, we said YES. He ended up standing next to our table talking to us for almost 30 minutes! How it started, I'll never remember. It just happened w/out any control. Now, yes, we were dumb and should have cut him off, but instead we were just amazed about how much this guy could go on and on and on and on about HIMSELF w/no prompting at all from us! Honestly, he was the HEAD WAITER and the other waiters kept coming over to talk to him but he sent them away because he was, "busy with his people," namely us. I even put my coat on and put my purse on the table to signal to this guy that we'd had about enough, but that subtle move didn't work with him. In the end, we just excused ourselves and paid and hightailed it out of there. Go for the food, enjoy the ambience and just make sure that the 28 year old dude {whose wife is pregnant w/their 1st child(due in May) and who enjoys driving cross country in his car w/his yellow dog} doesn't serve you dinner.

Pros: lovely interior

Cons: too crowded on weekends

Perfect Place

by rachelhutchson

Earth is a perfect place for a group dinner. From the moment we arrived we were seated quickly. Our waiter was pretty good in recommend a few plates (Lollipops, Samosa, Drunken Shrimp). I would definitely recommend trying the Lycee Martinis (to die for). After dinner, they cleared the tables and it became a nightlife spot. We ended up staying late. The DJ was played the best music.

Pros: Martinis / Food / Music

A true dining experience

by brendanm007

Everything tastes fresh, unique, well spiced. It's one of the few restaurants that seem to pride themselves on the food, service and it's a joy. We are picky, food snobs, and we were impressed...

Pros: Service, Fresh Food
