Robert Stuart hits the right note for a neighborhood salon--first-name intimate, fairly priced, friendly and cheerful, with all the quality of glamour-puss competitors. In 1983, Stuart defected from more attitudinal salons to found his own "non-threatening version," whose neighborly attitude was immortalized by Susan Orlean in the New Yorker. Don't let the down-to-earth vibe fool you: There's seriously upscale work going on. Though Stuart has been featured in top magazines and counts a large number of famous folks among his clientele, his salons emphasize and deliver comfortable, wearable cuts and color--with smiles, good advice and well-attuned ears thrown in for free.

The absolute best

by JrGirl

Robert Stuart Salon is by far the best salon in NYC. Robert along with his employees are very attentive to your hair needs and work hard to deliver the best results. Everytime I walk out of the Robert Stuart Salon I am constantly getting compliments on my hair... believe me if you don't give this place a chance you will seriously be missing out!

Great salon overall

by weeziewray

I have been going here for 2 years now and have always had a great experience with Robert and the whole atmosphere. He discusses what you want and everything he's going to do beforehand and even options for future cuts. I always walk out loving my hair. On my budget, Robert's a splurge. But with hair and shoes, you don't mess around with bargains.

Pros: friendly, considerate staff, convenient location

more praise for vincent

by teppy85

I also got an amazing cut a few weeks back by Vincent. He really listened to what I wanted (i was even somewhat vague) and gave me a cut that totally fits my personality and face. I have no idea how he does it but he's really great. Very sweet and chill. The whole salon seems very welcoming and aren't snippy or snooty like some other salons. I'm a busy student and despite not taking the best care of my hair at times, this cut has kept looking great. Definitely will go back.

Pros: chill, relaxed salon with great stylist

Cons: long hair wash line

Excellent Salon!

by BJL

I was in the city for a short time and really needed a haircut. I called Robert Stuart Salon and they fit me in with Vincent. From the second I walked in the door, I was made to feel comfortable and at home. Vincent gave me a thorough consult, and gave me such a great cut! He is innovative, concerned, VERY talented, and sweet as can be. I will certainly go back and will try to have him be my only stylist. I live in Florida, so this may be a trick, but he is wonderful. I really enjoyed my experience with him. I am a cosmetologist, and he is fabulous! I was in a bit of a hurry when I left, and didn't really get to say 'bye" to Vincent, but I really would like him to know how much I like my cut and his methods.
It was a pleasure. The only bad thing about writing this review, is I'm afraid I won't be able to be "fit in" anymore! He's going to be too busy for me!
Great job, and it was a pleasure going to this Salon. EVERYONE in the salon was friendly, warm and welcoming.
Thanks again, .... I'll be back!
Barbara

Lily is great

by bmp25

Anyone else think the mix of five star and one star reviews is a little odd? I don't have an explanation, but I can say the stylists here vary widely in skill level and experience. After my first stylist left I had a few disappointing cuts from people who are no longer there. I stuck with the place because of convenience and ended up with Lily and my hair has never looked better. She gives great cuts for men. I'm a guy in my twenties and like to look good without looking trendy. I have to look professional, but women have to like me too. Lily delivers.

I agree that the owner is in love with his voice and the solicitous attitude everyone puts on is blatantly fake--if you're a man, all the pseudo-empathy will make you want to punnch through a wall--but it's worth it for the cut.

Pros: Lily, lots of light

Cons: small, listening to the owner talk

Now I know the difference

by fashionlover55

I arrived at my appointment and I was greeted with wide smiles. I thought, this is going to be an excellent experience! My stylist (I don't even remember his name) was so very impersonal, however! This is a major turnoff to me. He said he was "focused on the cut." So I could not wait to see my new fab. cut. Well, once he blew it out and I told him it still felt heavy in places, he did not cut it any further! Now I know the difference between a $120 cut and a $55 cut. It is definitely worth your money to spend money on a GREAT cut.

Upon paying, a customer review flyer was shoved at me as soon as I handed them my cash and they sent me off with a lollipop and a paper asking me to write them a review. How about a 10% discount on my next visit to go along with that lollipop? I may of given them a second chance.... maybe.

So, here's the lollipop review.

Pros: Great blowdry

Cons: VERY Impersonal and how about a discount instead of a lollip

Lily is an amazing stylist!

by jennifer450nyc

Lily did an awesome job on an updo for my hair. Everyone at the salon (correction - everyone who worked at the salon) was super friendly and really paid attention to their clients. Tons of people complimented me on my hairstyle after I had it done here. Would go back in a NY minute!

Pros: personal attention to each client due to small size

Cons: some clients are obnoxious

Truly the best hair salon

by jg516

They don't just simply cut your hair. They listen to you, and combine that with their many years of experience to meet your exact needs at the highest level. And to top that, each staff member is not only professional, but extremely warm and gracious. I've tried a number of high-end salons in NYC, and Robert Stuart Salon has, by far, done the best job with my hair. It is, as always, a pleasure going there.

Pros: Excellent haircuts, great service, warm staff

Cons: Absolutely no cons

Worse cut by Robert stuart

by CSMobileUser

Was my first time at Robert stuart salon, got an appointment by the owner himself, which turned out to be the bigest mistake ever.one he was running 30min behind waiting in a salon that can barely fit 10 people had no where to sit.finnaly it was my turn, and I asked for a simple haircut.just 2inches of and very litle layers ended up with 4inches of with to many layers and short ones that u have no clue what to do with it.my head looks like a big mess.maybe if he did less weird talking and more listening then maybe he would understand what I wanted.never going back.

mediocre place

by capitalT

I feel horrible inside that I am writing this. The "stylist" was so nice to me and so was the manager and they even gave me a candy to write a positive review on yelp and citysearch. But unfortunately theres nothing positive about this place. The place at best is mediocre. I am new to UWS and after a brief encounter at other places in the neighborhood, I tried Robert Stuart salon hoping it would be as nice as the place looks from outside.

The stylist can talk well, but cant style.

Sorry, I have no choice but to move on.

Pros: none that I can think of

Cons: mediocre service, high rates

this place is not good for men

by mbac32

The stylist destroyed my hair style and now I am waiting for my hair to grow back so that someone can fix it.

I can get a better haircut for less than 40 bucks with tips in the neighborhood.

This place may be good for women, but guys please avoit it. There used to be a great stylist called Vincent but I think he left...and Roberts excuse is that Vincent moved to Hawaii.

Avoid this place at all cost. I dont get the fanfare I see here.

PS> if anyone happens to know where Vincent works now, please email me at mbac32@gmail

Thanks!

Pros: friendly staff(thats about it)

Cons: not a good place for mens haircut

Heed the warnings...Don't get attached!!!

by parisi

I had two great hairdressers, the second one I truly loved as she did an excellent job and gave great personal attention to her clients. Needless to say both were let go without warning. The salon's MO is to take the appointment with the preferred stylist (obviously not with Robert-see other reviews) without letting you know she is no longer there, only to be told as you walk in for the appointment.

The first time it happened, I thought shame on them. The second time it happened... I never went back, and never will!

As women, we know it's harder to find a great hairdresser than it is a husband. If anyone knows where Sandy went, please post the name of the salon.

Cons: Paranoid Owner

Happy Clients For 5 Years

by DWJonesNY

My wife and I have relied on Robert Stuart to style our hair for 5 years. Robert restyled our cuts, improving them considerably, and my wife's color has been consistently attractive and realistic. The store is small and friendly; they stay pretty close to schedule without sparing the time to do a good job; and the price is fair and affordable. Highly recommended.

Pros: Good styling, realistic color, friendly, fairly priced

Excelent straightening by Jake

by REP

I recently had the Keratin complex straightening and I was treated very professionaly by Jake, he was taking very good care of every part of the process, my hair felt smooth and healthy. According to them and to a review I saw on a magazzine it costs $450 and they charge $350. It's been 2 months now and my hair still looks great.

Pros: Extremely professional, great results.

Great Neighbood salon

by lprain

I first made my appointment with Robert Stuart Salon when trying to find a stylist convenient to work and home. There were a couple of reasons I selected this particular salon. One, the reviews overall were very favorable. Most clients seemed to be happy with their experience. But also telling were the management's responses to unfavorable comments. They were professional and sincerely demonstrated an interest in fixing any problem or concerns expressed by an unhappy customer. This spoke a lot to the integrity of the establishment. I?ve gone to the salon several times now and do see a high focus on customer service. I?ve never had to wait for my appointment. Someone always greats me when I arrive. The only criticism that I have is the small area in the back that serves as changing room, coat closet, shampoo area and employee lounge. It gets a little overcrowded at times and can feel a little awkward sitting with the employees during their breaks. Overall I?ll continue to patronize the salon and feel comfortable recommending to others. They all seem capable and skilled in what they do. A great neighborhood business!

Pros: Great Customer Service

Cons: Congested Shampoo/Coat/Employee breakroom area

Finally found my place

by jonathanvalenti

I knew I found my place about 6 months ago the moment I sat down in the chair and I didn't have to explain anything. Despite being a first timer, the stylist knew exactly how long it had been since my last cut and even knew how I typically like my hair cut. I've become a regular since then and I'm always thrilled with the results.

The staff is incredibly friendly (they actually get along with each other too) which makes for a relaxing experience and atmosphere. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and appreciated.

I've been to a lot of places over the years in the city and this is my favorite.

Highly recommended.

Pros: Great staff, reasonably priced, relaxed atmosphere

Best Modern Hair Cut and Syle for the Money

by tams

Since I moved in to Manhattan, I had a hard time deciding where to go for my hair. I have always paid between $175-200 for a good cut in the city because my hair is very important to me. However, I was sick of paying so much for a cut that really didnt turn heads. I found Robert Stuart Salon through an archive article in the NYTimes and decided to try a Salon that was known for the best value for price. I got a cut and style that was the better than any other Salon that I have ever been to. Diane the stylist consulted with me on facial features, volume in hair etc. to produce a style that really accentuated my features. I am 26 y/o and wanted something a little different. Not only did I get something that was in line with the latest celeb styles, I got an experience that surpasses anything else. Even the prep done by Lullieta included a scalp massage that was better than scalp massages provided by Bliss Spas. The style cut and blowdry was 65.00 for a sr. stylist. Which, if you want a great cut, will usually run someone about $175-200 for an equally skilled competitor. I usually dont bother writing reviews but this experience was so good that I would put my neck on the line and suggest anyone to try them out. They are right on amsterdam between 84th and 85th. Stop paying too much to go to pretentious salons when Robert Stuart is the best value for your money ever! One the walk home 3 construction guys whistled, a few men in columbus circle turned their heads and that was enough for me to conclude that it was the best money I ever spent.

Pros: Trend Sensitive, Creative, Excellent Service, Personable

Cons: none

GORGEOUS cuts

by vogue242

Every girl dreams of the perfect New York City haircut and Robert at the Robert Stuart Salon delivers on this flawlessly. He's an innovative hairstylist who always takes the time to truly understand his subject. He makes recommendations as to what haircuts and color would compliment your personality and look. He?s an artist by craft and can accommodate the edgy client or the more conservative traditionalist. Finding the right stylist in NYC at the right price is such a daunting task but after seeing Robert just once, I absolutely refuse to use anyone else. I cannot count how many compliments I have gotten since my cut with Robert. In the interest of full disclosure and at the risk of sounding vain, I have to admit I feel gorgeous and completely confident after visiting him. There are few stylists in NYC who can accomplish such a feat.

The WORST haircut I've ever had

by Kit96

Not one to usually write a review, after visiting the Robert Stuart Salon on the UWS, I felt driven to do so. After having been kept waiting for 30 minutes, I asked Robert for 2-3 inches to be trimmed from my hair and ended up with 3 inches from one side and 5 from the other. When I went back for my hair to be fixed, Robert then took off 3 inches off the longer side, making it uneven on the other side. Eventually another stylist had to fix Robert's horrendous mistakes. I came out with my hair 6 inches shorter, and not the 2-3 as I originally wanted. Apparently Robert Stuart has been in the haircutting business for over 25 years. Whatever talent he may have had at one time, is well and truly gone.

the BEST

by MrDavidWebb

My wife and I think Robert Stuart is by far the very best hair stylist either of us has ever seen. He takes time to get to know you and offers suggestions about hair styles that complement your personality, your profession, and your features. It?s a total package. But you don?t have to take that description. Consider this: my wife and I have an absolutely beautiful 16-month old daughter. Recently, we asked Robert to give our daughter her very first haircut. All she needed was a little bit trimmed to give her hair a bit of definition. We could have trimmed her hair ourselves. We could have asked someone in our family to do it. We could have gone to any salon in all of New York City. We asked Robert Stuart to do this for us. We trusted our daughter to him, and he was nothing short of fantastic. What higher endorsement can anyone offer than to ask someone to give your child her/his first haircut? That?s how good Robert Stuart ? and his entire team ? are.

Pros: everyone is polite...you're really welcomed

Cons: none

Great Men's Haircut

by ddank1111

Robert gives a great men's haircut. I say this as a 30 year old guy who was tired of the rough $15 cuts I used to get from old fashioned barber shops. I went to Robert 5 years ago to fix a haircut I got from one of those barbers and have been going ever since. Whether you want a conservative men's cut or something more edgy, Robert can do it.

Pros: Quality of haircut

they fire all the good stylists

by elisabeth12345

the staff at robert stuart salon is very, very unhappy: the first two stylists i was given [neither of whom i liked very much] were fired. finally i found one i liked, and that one was just fired. the turnover at this salon is greater than any i've ever been to, and i'm not going back. i've spoken with two stylists who tell me that robert stuart himself is paranoid and accuses the staff of whispering about him in the back room. if i worked there i'd whisper about him: he's a nasty employer. i have found somewhere else to go. i would not recommend going to robert stuart: you can get your hair done for much less money somewhere else, where you can also depend on seeing your favorite stylist week after week.

DON'T GO HERE.

Cons: read my review: robert stuart fires the good staff because he's paranoid. after losing 3 stylists, i'm not going back.

by gab123

I had one of the best experiences in the history of my hair at the Robert Stuart Salon. As an apprehensive custome, my fear was quickly alleviated by Robert's expertise. He considered the texture of my hair, facial structure, and style desire before giving recommendations, which turned into a great haircut. In addition, the atmosphere is much better than many ues salons; everyone is friendly and attentive, a welcome change from previous experiences. Free bangs trims and great customer service round up the perfect haircut. Great place!

Stylish Mom and Pop Shop

by jewban2

This upper-west-side treasure has a well deserved longevity. I became a customer when I lived across the street and have continued to return despite moves to Washington Heights and Brooklyn. Why? The bottom line is a great hair cut. I am afflicted with the kind of curls that can transform into sage brush on a humid, August day and Robert has managed not only tame my wild head but, also to completely transform it on occassion. The staff is hospitable and friendly and amazingly talented as well.
In a city where a good hair salon frequently involves being humiliated by staff with an attitude or the choice between paying rent or maintaing your hair, this salon has managed to stay a mom & pop shop without staying trapped in the past. It's worth the trip from any borrough.

the best of nyc!

by nycitygal16

I can't even begin to express my gratitude to Robert Stuart and what he did with my hair. I've lived in new york for many years now and finding the right stylist for my hair seemed near impossible until I came to the Robert Stuart Salon and met Robert. Unlike most hairdressers he spoke with me before my hair cut to ask and talk about what I was looking for and what I wanted and sure did he listen! While I am not one to usually compliment myself, I have to say that my hair looks absolutely beautiful and all the credit goes to Robert Stuart! Not only will I be back again and again, but all my friends will know about Robert and the Robert Stuart Salon as well. Thank you Robert, I couldn't have asked for anything better! You're truly a hair genius!

Very disappointing cut with /Robert...wanted to cry...

by dijistar212

I recently had my hair cut by Robert at Robert Stuart Salon. I was extremely disappointed. I wanted to cry as they were styling my hair. They could not get it to look like a glossy salon finished blowout should look; they did not take the time to work with my hair, it being a bit dry. After washing my hair and styling at home - I realized that my cut was uneven; it looks like I never got my hair cut :( I felt rushed - like they couldn't take the time to work with my hair; seemed as though he was not use to working with my hair texture. With his years of experience, I should have left his salon looking stunning. I've gotten a better cut and style at a small, very low profile salon. Two weeks after getting my hair with Robert, I am now searching to get my hair re-cut. I was very disappointed - as I was so excited at the opportunity to get my hair cut by Robert - after reading reviews on city search. I must say, Robert seems like a very nice guy and has a sincere interest in pleasing you, but it just did not come together. Sorry...would never go back...

Cons: sloppy haircut and styling; hair looked terrible after the blowout and an uneven cut.

THE BEST HAIRCUT in NY........ period!!!!

by funkybuttons

I like most other people was very hesitant to try yet another salon. I've had my haircut in many cities in many different countries, and finally I am convinced there is a perfect salon out there. ........ and it's name is the Robert Stuart Salon. Not only did they welcome me as a walk in, But I didn't even wait long at all. I instantly fell in love with the warm neighborhood vibe, and friendly atmosphere that they have going on there. The conversations filled the room and was not only isolated between stylist and client, but it seemed as if from a scene in a movie, that everyone talked freely, and openly amongst each other as if we all were long time friends. Conversations varied from where's good to eat in the neighborhood, to thoughts on the long term effects of global warming. Robert is a not only a seasoned and amazingly talented stylist, but he is also a great listener, and worked with me through my lack of being able to describe what exactly I wanted to do with my hair. Together we put together what usually is almost impossible to find...... a great haircut. I was no farther than 3 blocks away, before I got my first of many compliments on my hair, which only reassures me of my opinion. I only wish there were a Robert Stuart Salon in every city I visit.

Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Haircuts, Price

Cons: none

Medicore place in ny

by samaher

I usually tour cities and choose one place to evaluate the saloons, unfortunately, mislead by the rating of this site (which I am having my extreme doubts of its system now), for NYC, I believe I choose the wrong place.
I had an appointment with Robert himself to exclude the bad reviews worry. However, after 30min wait, my hair cut was below average to say the least. However, for people seeking an ordinary cut this might not be too bad. I noticed that at least 90% of the customers are quite on the older side (they are either doing tinting T section or doing their hair while still all gray), which would probably sum about Robert's style, which he mentioned already on his website. However, for an experienced hairdresser, I thought he would be able to create something different if the client wanted that. My hair is long, and I wanted to keep the length, but I wanted to have a new look. He failed to create something with that, but I believe that limitations only describe the hairdresser abilities. As I went to a hairdresser before with the same state of my current hair, and they did manage to amaze me with a funky hair style by changing the angle and the length of different layers. If anything, he defunked my funky style, as he mentioned by evening the layers.
But what made me really disappointed of the whole experience, is that the blowdry that he gave to my hair (combined with a straightening iron, that was red, and was very harsh on the hair pushing it and cutting all through, beside his quite rough hands that kept hitting my head giving me quite unpleasant experience I NEVER had even at lower class places, as if he is angry or something which was very strange for an experienced hair dresser), and the end result, was a very big hair that has lots of curls inside. He repeated that he wanted to make it very straight in order to make the final correction to the hair cut while dry. If it was still full of curls, you can predict what the final result was!!

Pros: some of the staff make you feel at ease

Cons: Robert is very rough on the head, very traditional hair cut not recommended for new look

Just "eh". After going to Robert Stuart, people asked, why didn't you get your hair cut?

by laureninthecity

Robert is a great businessman, an ok haircutter and a pretty good stylist. I've been to his salon twice for a cut, years apart, and both times left looking pretty much the same as when i went in. neither stylist wanted to look at my hair before it was washed, but i insisted both times since i was anew client. the first time i went to a junior stylist. she hardly cut my hair and when i asked her to make it shorter in the front, she cute 5-10 hairs a couple of centimeters. after asking a few more times, i gave up and chalked it up to her inexperience. i came back recently for a haircut with robert, figuring he would be much better. his cut was ok, although again, longer than i wanted. i asked him to shorten it and, again, it went up a miniscule amount. we went through this a few times until i gave up. the day after my haircut, friends asked why i had skipped my appointment, because they couldn't tell it had been cut. my hair looked pretty nice when i left though, and robert gave me a lollipop and asked that i review his salon. that tactic has obviously served him well. however, $90 for, essentially, a blow-out, isn't worth it.

by NYCRaina

Great colorist (Theo) and stylist (Robert)...I LOVE my hair!!!

Theo looks at your color and does a great consultation. Robert cut my hair wet and then cut it dry five or six times until he thinks its perfect! I would definitely go back!

Easy, convienent, and always good quality

by ReneeRenee

I was nervous when it came time to find a new hairstlist in the city but my desperation and gut instinct lead me in the right direction. This salon does not dissapoint! My hairstylist there recently left but my experiences there have been so pleasnt I decided to try the other stylists. Thank God I did! I love my color and my haircut is perfect! The owner Robert knows his stuff and knows how to run a good business. The customer service is great. Did I mention the shampoo? Ahhhhh thats the good stuff. The prices are more reasonable as well. I feel like a new woman every time I leave. Thank you Robert Stuart salon!

great haircut at a reasonable price

by lilliang

in the past I have gone to hairdressers who are now charging in the $400 to 500 range. which I can no longer afford. I was so delighted to find a hairdresser who, at a fraction of those charges, was their equal. I found out about him attending a concert given by my grand-daughter's private school - admiring the haircut of a woman sitting before me. I was convinced that she was going to a hairdresser whom I could not afford, and that she was younger and with much thicker hair. Nevertheless, I worked up my courage and asked her for the name of her hairdresser. I just had my third haircut there today and am more than totally pleased. The cuts are so well done that they last far more than has been the usual. Nice, too, that I get compliments on the way my hair looks. The staff - including Robert - is friendly - only thing lacking is they don't serve coffee. Of course, I'm joking.

An unrelated bonus to the haircut, is the neighborhood. While I live on the upper east side, I find my trips here are an incentive to browse the upper west side..

Pros: great haircut - Robert very attentive

Cons: can't think of any

uneven

by moutain

i am not usually picky w/ hairstylist, but i wanted to try something new so i booked robert after seeing many good reviews. I have no issues w/ the salons, assistants etc, but i felt extremely rushed the entire time, and hence i got a very uneven haircut, it was about 1/2 -1 inch longer from one side to the next. I felt like as soon as i sat in his chair he wanted to move on to the next customer. I realize the more customers you have the more money you make, but its not fair, you should treat all customers the same and give them the time they pay for. I went to another salon two days later to fix the uneveness, hence it was one expensive haircut.

Clean, professional, and friendly salon!!!

by sarahelisabethpost

I went to the Robert Stuart salon after having a terrible color job at Amour de Hair on the UWS. I was having my roots highlighted at Amour de Hair and instead of matching my golden blonde hair, they made my roots so blonde I looked like I belonged at the Playboy mansion. So, the next day (after a long night of crying) I walked up the street to the Robert Stuart Salon to see if they could fix my hair disaster. I was seen by John who transformed my hair into the beautiful blonde I wanted it to be!!! He is AMAZING!! Not only did he fix my color, but he also gave me a new gorgeous cut. On top of everything, the salon is very clean and the staff are some of the NICEST people in Manhattan. I am hooked- I will never go anywhere else!!!

Pros: Beautiful, clean salon! Great staff!! BEAUTIFUL results!

Cons: I can't think of one!
