This place again is way overpriced for what you get, particularly for girls. If I'm forking out over $70 for a haircut I expect to at least be offered a drink. Haircut was fine but not worth the price.

Its wasting time in spending there. Less impressive haircut. Its shapeless and dirty. The place doesn't seem clean because a lot of the chairs are white. Won't be going back...

My first trip to Robert Stuart Salon was terrible. I was trapped by the reviews posted on city search. I approached this salon for hair cut. Firstly owner told me result will be as expected. As he started his work he was very fast and did

knows how to handle grey hair. Been going to Robert since Amsterdam Avenue, before my hair turned mostly grey. Other haircutters there are good as well, though go to Robert if you can an appointment.

Best haircut and highlights! Roxana is great. I highly recommend her. She is so nice & really knows what is going to look good. The color is perfect and my haircut is just the pick me up I needed. I trust her ideas and suggestions 100%.

i live a block away, and tried this place out, was amazing, i got a fantastic hair cut, honestly one of the best ever, the layers fall perfectly and she was very attentive to what i wanted, i have long hair and cannot stand when people cut too much, she cut the perfect amount, so it is still long but shiny and bouncy and i also always get great blow outs with roxanna, highly recommend her!!

I chose Robert Stuart Salon because of the rave reviews on CitySearch. So many people mentioned that Robert really listened, was patient, took the time to get a full understanding of what his clients were looking for & then executed that excellently. I was very nervous. Ive always had a slight, unruly & untamable wave to my hair that made every style Id ever had look bad. Id found a stylist who figured out how to cut it so that my hair WANTED to & did lay exactly the way I wanted it to (total wash-n-go: no blow-drying, no product, just shake my head and) & it was a miracle, regardless of humidity, for 8 years. Then the grey hair started to come in & it's much wavier-heading-toward curly & the old cut didnt work anymore. So, I let it grow out for 3 months of ugly, & decided that Id handle the transition with a perm until it was entirely curly/wavy on its own. I insisted that Robert & I talk before my hair was washed. I had brought pics of the fabulous cut Id had for the 8 years, pics of how it looked now in various levels of humidity, & pics of the type of perm I thought was appropriate. Robert said that he could shape it to make it look good again without the perm. As he was cutting, I showed him where I knew my hair would react badly to the things he was doing.
When I got home & looked in the mirror, I wanted to cry. This was the most expensive haircut Id ever ever had & it looked awful. Two days later humidity was low, so I blew-dry my hair, & it looked OK. Robert gave me a very nice haircut. For someone with straight hair. I dont HAVE straight hair, even in dry weather. I was very clear about that (& he could see it when Id come in), & about NO maintenance. I felt as though Robert hadnt listened to a word Id said, hadnt taken into consideration what he saw & felt in my hair, nor paid any attention to all the pics Id brought. And now I have to spend months growing it out again enough to get the perm that I went in saying I wanted in the first place.
The manager told me that if I was displeased with the cut within a week, Robert would re-do it for free. I called the next day & explained the entire situation to one of the managers, including the fact that I did NOT want Robert to cut a single hair moreI didnt want even shorter hair or more layers to have to grow out. She told me that I should come back & that of course there would be a discount because of what had happened.
The next week I met with Robert, who could see that my hair was indeed curling & waving contrary to what Id said I wanted, but said HE thought that it looked really good. I was very clear in our talks & with all of the pics Id showed him that this was nothing like what Id want. Mona, the woman who handles perms, discussed all of the pics Id brought with me of the type of perm I wanted & thought would look best & she seemed to understand me. We agreed that I should grow it out so it could be styled properly after the perm.
When I asked Robert how the discount was going to be handled, he looked completely taken aback. He said Id come in needing my hair restyled & hed done that. And that he was willing to fix it since I was dissatisfied. I responded that Id come in telling him that I thought Id wanted the perm & that I only had him cut it because he told me it would be best to do that rather than get the perm. Very very reluctantly, he said hed give me a 10% discount, but only since I asked & not because of any problems with what had occurred.
So now I have to grow out a very expensive haircut that didnt work & wasnt what Id asked for. I really liked the feeling that I got from Mona, & (to the utter amazement of my friends & family who are aghast at this whole situation) am considering going back to her for the perm. Itll be a long & uncomfortable several months before I have can even make that decision.

Robert's salon is housed in a newly renovated historic brick building that has been artfully designed with contemporary fixtures. I started going to Robert 5 years ago when my niece recommended him to me. I am bicoastal and needed to find a good hair salon in NYC. When I first went to Robert I had very short hair, he suggested that I let it grow to soften my face. I was dubious but went along with his recommendation. Though It took a while to grow out, today I could not be happier. My husband says that he has never seen my hair look so good. Unfortunately he too would love to go to Robert but he is bald, something that even this outstanding stylist can rectify. I have my hair highlighted by Theo, who has had long experience and knows her craft. I highly recommend Theo and Robert. Give them a try!

I am not convinced by the services of this salon. The colour I got (highlights) turned quickly into a yellow tone and the cut made by the chef himself is neither precise nor artful.

I was very reluctant to start coloring my hair, having always liked my natural color. Keila was recommended by a friend, so i gave her a try. The result was so natural looking that my own mother didn't realize i started to color my hair.Keila and the rest of the staff are friendly and very professional. I highly recommend the salon.

Ok, I had to write a review because I know how hard it is to find a good hair stylist and every girl I know has had a horror hair salon story. So, let me just say that I highly recommend this salon! I saw Keila for highlights and a cut, somehow she squeezed me in on a busy saturday and I cannot believe how awesome my hair looks! Not only did she listen to me, she takes her time and really takes pride in her work - and the results are awesome. I've never seen someone cut the way she does, either. My cut even looks good without blow drying it, which I didn't even ask for! Also, I have to say, I saw this other stylist do an amazing cut on the girl sitting next to me - I think that sylist's name was Brendan. Highly recommend Keila or him! I'm sending my friends here!

Robert is is world-class, although in the Upper West Side neighborhood he is as good as any on Madison Avenue or in Paris. I know, having tried both. He is a great stylist, listens to you and translates your words into just the look you had in mind. His new salon is spacious, modern, light and beautiful. I came out earlier today feeling like a new woman!

People who know Robert Stuart and the salon know that it has been a great place to go for many years. The old location on Amsterdam was what real estate agents call ""cozy"".. really small. Intimate in the sense of cramped.

But the place became the go-to salon for a whole bunch of picky people, both men and women.

Why? Because you always get personal attention. And you always get a great cut. It didn't matter if the place was small..

Now Robert has designed and built a really gorgeous , much larger space on Columbus. He has the same core staff and is hiring more, expanded his hours, and gives the same personal attention like the cozy old place.

To get the real story of how good this place is, just talk to a few people who have been coming for years and ask them why they are so loyal.

You get a great individualized cut here, with amazingly intimate & friendly service, in a gorgeous new salon. If you're not one of the many long-time friends of this place, definitely check it out!

The new Robert Stuart Salon is a testament to the stylish taste and entrepreneurial energy of the owner. Robert is a neighborhood legend, a scary-smart New Yorker who seems to remember everyone's life narrative.

Talk to anyone who has been coming here for years and they will give you the real story: Robert knows hair, and he knows how to deal with a diverse set of clients, one at a time.

He also knows how to create a friendly environment where everyone knows you by name and treats you like royalty.

The negative/nasty reviews are so far from reality that I honestly think there is some kind of conspiracy by jealous competitors.

The Robert Stuart Salon is really in class all by itself, on an island over-populated with ho-hum McHair places.

If you want special attention and a great result at a surprisingly reasonable price, check out this beautiful new salon at Columbus and 82nd.

I just visited Robert's new location, on 82nd and columbus only a few blocks from the old place...... WOW! If you thought the last location was chic, This one is incredible. Firstly, the Salon is roughly three times the size of the old one, and somehow retained that cozy feel. The facade has floor to ceiling windows, that wraps around the corner of the block. The interior is so beautiful, as I entered, I heard passerby's confirm my thoughts with oohs and aaahs. Which in New York is not an easy task.
So I just stopped by to check the new place out, and upon entry realized that due to the inclimate weather of the past few months, I had not taken care of my doo. Lucky me Robert had an appointment later that evening available.
Fast forward 3 hours.... I return to the new location, only to be surprised again, the place is even more stunning at night. Robert once again lived up to my super picky high expectations, not just for my hair... which is flawless by the way. But also for being the great eccentric conversationationlist that he is. Thanks again.

I really hate to write a bad review but I feel like its necessary to do here. I have long thick hair that I'm pretty attached to and so I only get it cut 2x a year. That being said I'm willing to pay for a great cut when the time comes to get it done. I had a friend recomment Robert himself as giving her the best layers she'd ever had, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I gave myself ~2 hours for wash cut and blow out. I was done in 45 minutes. This isn't actually a good thing. Robert did a once over on my hair and asked me very quickly what I wanted done, while i was walking towards the hairwash station (didn't sit me down and feel my hair texture or anything) The wash wasn't the most enjoyable experience, which is sad because they can be SO relaxing when done right. The tech was rough and fast. Then when i was done with the wash and the tech tried to comb out my hair (which was tangled because she didn't condition it enough), she was taking too long, so Robert picked up a comb and started to help her. Try and imagine 2 people on either side of your head pulling knots out...\r
\r
Come to cut time and Robert starts hacking away expertly. I trust that he knows what he's doing, and hes very amicable, assuring me of what he's doing along the way. After a short period of large blunt chops, he says he's going to dry it and put in more finishing touches. Now in the attempt to blow out my hair he find that this does take too long for his schedule, so he calls the tech over to help him. I've had 2 people necessary to blow out my hair once before, but all that means to me is 1) you don't know HOW to blow out thick hair, or 2) you're in a rush to get me out of your chair. Eitherway the blow out was fast and rough, resulting in a little more frizz than I thought was appropriate. Robert finished my cut and sent me on my way very nicely. It felt like a nice cut, but unfortunately their definition of ""blow out"" means simply dry hair. Its hard to tell how someone has cut your hair without it being styled. Once I went home and styled it MYSELF I discovered that there were a number of problems. He barely touched my bangs, the layers on both sides were uneven in weight, and horror of horrors, the actual bottom edge of my hair was NOTICABLY lopsided.\r
\r
Robert gives a guarantee that if you're not satisfied, you can come back and get it fixed. I probably should have had them fix it but after such a rushed experience, unbecoming of a salon owner, I was really hesitant to go back and have them mess my hair up more. With a few minor snips here and there myself, I ended up with the cut I wanted.\r
\r
Over all, the lack of attention to detail is sad. It could be a great salon experience if thye weren't in such a rush to get to the next client. I won't be returning to them.

With a few minor snips here and there myself, I ended up with the cut I wanted.\r
\r
Over all, the lack of attention to detail is sad. It could be a great salon experience if thye weren't in such a rush to get to the next client. I won't be returning to them.

I lived on the Upper West Side for many (many!) years and Robert always cut my hair. I always walked out of there with a GREAT haircut, suited to my face, hair texture and personal style. And had a good time besides!

Then I moved away, across the river, and for five years went from salon to salon trying to find someone who could give me even a GOOD haircut, with varying results. But everything was basically OK - after all, I had a simple bob - until I decided to go short. After two unsuccessful cuts in a week, I trudged across the river and through the snow back to Robert and, once again, he rocked it!

Thank you, Robert, for fixing my hair. I can't wait to see your new salon!

I had been going to place on the east side, that was a little out of my way and expensive. I was not happy with my last haircut there so had to wait for to grow out, but realized I had to find another hair stylist.
I did a search on citysearch and found Robert Stuart. I left a message, they called me back right away.

It was less expensive then the other place, the women who cut my hair, just felt the texture of my hair and understood that I have straight and curly hair.
She did a great job, did not take to long and she was very friendly.
I will be going back.

When I first entered Robert's salon in 1996, i was down on hair stylists and salons, period. Robert was warm, listened to me, sensed what I wanted better than i could express it myself. He 'got' me, and gave me the first cut that suited me in my whole life!!! My personality and needs came first, casual, perky, needing little care, and a bit quirky. Over the years he has changed it, suiting season, my wish for different color, for a livelier or more 'funky' style, highly individual, always tuned to me.
The place is cozy, the staff, friendly. There are wonderful long term folks who do a great job, Theo in color, the best. The others, familiar now always greet me warmly. It is a real place, beautifully designed, human, not glitzy or phony. There are sometimes new folks who don't last,..because Robert is a real human being who often gives people a chance in the field. He is most personable too.
The few nasty reviews amaze me. So he sometimes is a bit behind, so...? People come late, he takes the time with each of us that we need, some needing more. He accommodates. Bright, funny, personable, talented and NICE. I've sent countless friends there; always good results. And the staff stays too, loyal and talented as well! Brava to Biba, Lily, Theo, the wonderful Janel, and more, to Valerie, the fresh flowers, but mostly, to Robert, hair artist!!!!

I've been coming here for about a year now for haircuts and color, and Diana is excellent at both! The entire staff is welcoming & friendly. Every time I've been at the salon, I've never seen any client who was disappointed with the services he/she received. In fact, they all looked great and happy as they walked out the door. I'm glad the salon is staying on the UWS & hope it'll be here for years to come.

As a client of Roberts for 20 years, a receptionist for many years and personal friend of Roberts, I am in a unique position to tell you about this gem of a salon. The negative reviews written here are misplaced and do not reflect the salons commitment to excellence. Here are a few responses to some.
1.Robert was running 35 minutes behind due to greed. True that Robert tends to runs late. In his attempt to accommodate his clients (he cant say no), this is often the result. Recently, Robert changed the amount of time he allows for each cut to 45 minutes. It has nothing to do with, as one reviewer stated, greed. It has to do with his generosity.
2.and gotten the worse hair cut by Robert. I would never ever recommend anyone. This is not true. Its possible that the most famous hair stylist on the planet would not have made this reviewer happy. I dont love every cut of Roberts, but I am always extremely pleased. There are days when he just cuts better than others. He is not a machine; I understand the variability within each haircut. I also have gone back for adjustments. On the street, I am asked where I get my hair cut so the slight differences from haircut to haircut are only discernable to me.
3. made the mistake of going to the Robert Stuart salon. Realizing the next day that my right side was shorter than my left side. I would like to ask this reviewer why she didnt call the salon the next day to explain the situation instead of writing a bad review. She would have been welcomed back, apologized to and the difference in lengths would have been easily corrected.
4.First the shampoo girl was rude and did not want to be there. I have discovered that individuals that wash hair are not particularly talkative and if you think about it, are in the back, and are rarely acknowledged for doing a great job. Not everyone can be super friendly.
5.Where can I find a stylist that understands subtlety and listening to what the client wants? A junior stylist is just that, junior. He or she is in the process of becoming a good stylist. I suspect that if the reviewer went to another salon and chose a junior stylist, she may have walked away with the same experience and disappointment.
6.The place is too small and very crowded and very loud, specially the owner talking so much and the hair dryers. Yes, it is a small salon where Robert established his business and has put his heart and soul into this salon. Letting it go since it no longer serves his growing clientele has been a difficult move for him but they are soon moving to a newer and larger salon to accommodate everyone.
About color: As a receptionist, I witnessed elated clients walking away with color they loved and clients who were unhappy. Overwhelmingly, the problem with the color was a lack of accurate communication between the client and the colorist. This is no ones fault. Hair coloring is not an exact science. Much depends on the existing color of your hair, the base color, the texture, and what is actually said to the colorist. At Robert Stuart, I know all of the colorists, and they are committed to making sure you love your color. I have had color done that I have not liked and it was in my explaining and the idea of I envisioned that was the problem. As always, my colorist heard my concerns and corrected.

I have gone to robert stuart since past 1 year.
Hear a lot about this place, and I agree is it definately one of the better salons on the UWS.
I had color and cut and a coppola keratin treatement, which was bit on a pricer side, truth be told; but I loved the results. My stylist jake was great and i would say it was worth every penny I spend there.
But the last time I went, it was a royal disaster...
All i wanted to do was touch up my roots and cut.
It was sad to say that my stylist was not good at all...
He touched up my roots the wrong color , then recolored to make up for the color difference.
To add cherry on the pie he gave me the worse bangs I have gotten till now. It wasnt the first time I have had bangs...but i left feeling as if my walmart stylist had given me better bangs a few years ago!!!
I was just disappointed to find a not so good stylist in a salon on this caliber......
I would recommend this place..but pick whom u choose to cut ur hair carefully !!!!!

I highly recommend the Robert Stuart Salon. The staff is attentive & friendly & the prices are reasonable by NYC standards. My stylist, Julie, took the time to find out what I wanted in a hairstyle & what would best work for me & my particular type of hair . I couldn't be happier with the results.

I live in Washington DC but come to New York to re-energize around three or four times a year. Each time I come, I make a point of dropping in at Robert Stuart's for a haircut. Apart from the consistently fantastic work that Robert does on my hair, there's nothing like the vibrant neighborhood feel of this salon. The lively chatter of the place (anything but politics please), the constant bustle, and all-around friendliness can't be beat. No better place to soak in the NY vibe and wash away to dulls of the DC bureaucracy. You NYers are so lucky!

I didn't want to write this because the staff was so pleasant and I believe really tried. However, every morning I'm left to manage this disaster of a hairstyle and wanted to warn.

I asked for a light brown color with subtle highlights - was given red all over. I suggested a textured/layered cut and was give what I would call close to a bowl cut. And because the stylist used a straight razor on all edges, I'm now left with a grow out full of split ends. I've never had a worse experience in both cut and color.

Addition: I just read Jen122's comment - sounds like we should start a ""stuck with a red, bowl cut style"" support group!

Again, the staff was very nice and tried but this was just a terrible experience.

Being there for the first time, you would think they would welcome you with open arms, and be paid attentioned to.well I experienced none of that, instead the receptionist was so rude, and Robert was runing 35min behinde do to greed,I see that he is so busy and still he continues to take more clients.I don't think paying for hair cut that cost $95 +tax and only spending 30min on your hair and a hair cut that is one side shorter than the other, and a blow dry that was half done and doesn't look pollished\r
at all.I came in better than when I walked out.\r

I just moved to the upper west side and I wanted to try a local salon. So based on the reviews on Citysearch, I thought this salon would be a perfect choice. I was very wrong. The quality and customer service was the worst I have ever seen. First the shampoo girl was rude and did not want to be there...then the low class stylist was even worse. she barely said two words to me. I had two requests no red highlights and a nice modern cut. What I got...red highlights and a bowl 1980's teacher cut. Horrible and very, very expensive. will never go back.

After coming here for the first time, i felt obligated to write about my experience. This salon is top notch, from the moment you walk in you are greeted and walked over to get an amazing scalp massage while being shampooed. I then had my haircut and styled by Robert who did an amazing job. He knew exactly what i wanted based on my description and how i like to wear my hair. I will definitely be back to this salon in the near future.
