Unfortunately, the location (49th St) and phone number listed (242-9040) are NO LONGER VALID. I missed the opportunity to visit the store because of the old information listed here.

Pros: Good selection of anime / manga.

if u dont mind getting used books, u might as well go to bookoff, but if u want brand new books or new title, go to kinokuniya. there is a huge collection, but a bit pricey though, as there isnt much competition around.

The address above is the old address, they are now on 6th Avenue across the street from Bryant Park. Go check out this amazing bookstore! The grand opening for this 3 floor store was near the end of 2007, but everything about the store is just so perfect and so Japanese, there's even a cafe on the 3rd floor. I just wish they had a better website that was more user friendly for non Japanese customers...

They sell Japanese books, stationery, origami paper, and much more. It is a fairly large store and is typically pretty busy. It has a great location by Rockerfeller Center and is very easy to get to. The downside is that it is a bit more expensive than other stores in the City, but the selection is far better. They even have a little stand to by Japanese drinks/snacks

Kinokuniya is a japanese book store full of not just books but magazines, manga, anime, and cd's. It is like the Japanese Version of Barnes and Nobles. They have a selection of japanese books and manga. All the employee's there speak japanese which can make it a little difficult when you are looking for something. This store is located right by Rockfeller Center so it would be a good place just to visit and window shop.

This is a quality store, especially if you're looking for Japanese texts. They have a wide selection of Japanese-language books. A lot of American bookstores try to include international books, but there are just too many for them to keep up. They usually end up stocking with the generic ones that supposedly represent the country, but they don't really. This is a must check out store.

Kinokuniya Bookstore has some of the most beautiful books you'll ever see. Gorgeous coffee table books filled with great pictures. Books of illustrations just beautiful books. The only problem is the books are in Japanese which is Okay if you read Japanese otherwise it's a bit of a drag. Still you should drop in and take a look around just for the experience and if you read Japanese well then shop away.
