I have a family member in this dance school and she has been talking non-stop about it. Therefore I went to go to a recital. After that recital i was amazed. It was neatly operated. I talk highly of this school. I noticed that The Smallings put all their effort into this school. Over all I recommend this school.

I an an adult who took classes w/ Jan for many years.I took part in many recitals and can tell you that backstage can be very hectic, but everyone watches out for the little ones. Many times I did what I called 'bathroom brigade' and took the kinderdance kids to the bathroom. And believe me, once one has to go,they all have to go.None was ever refused, even if they just were checking out the bathroom. The only time I can think they might be told to wait would be if their dance was next. But they all were asked in plenty of time in advance.Jan is a dedicated teacher...strict,yes,but one doesn't learn dance without paying attention and giving 100%.Even the youngest can learn, but not without some discipline. That is one of the problems with kids today...no discipline,no dedication to anything but their cell phones, ipods, etc.

I have been at this school for four years and there has never been a problem also the younger ones have no problems oncee there with friends they don't worry and just enjoy it. I would suggest this school to everyone there has never been a problem for anyone. once mothers go behind stage things go wild no one is ever mistreated it wouldn't make sense if you wanted the costume and you werent in the dance what so you can play in it go get one at party city or somewhere if you want one to play with

ive seen over the years the kind of teacher this women is. she is a very hard vein women! over the last three years her pupils have gone down, and i suspect its because she is too hard on the children. the expectations of a 5 and 6 year old are little already and she expects the world from them. and the older students are just tired of her they dont even show up and then go off and sleep over friends houses or go to the movies when they say there not feeling well. if they felf like they could tell there teacher the truth about things they wouldnt need to lie. the little ones are afraid of her because she scares them. ive seen it first hand many times. ive been back stage during recitals and at practices. she is set in her ways and talks to the parents like there idiots. this behavior has made me look into having my older one go to a different school so he can learn modern and hip hop, which she knows little about. in order to get into a decent dance school nowadays you have to know all facets of dance including some modern, hip hop, and lyrical( ive looked it up at julliard) and want to make sure he is prepared when he tries out for colleges. unless she is going to change her ways and hire a hip hop dancer( she uses video tapes) i cant see many kids staying with the school. including my oldest

Miss Janice has 36 years of experience as a dance teacher and is nothing but professional. She offers all types of dance and the kids love her. I am a former student and now all of my kids attend there. My daughter started when she was 2 1/2 and she had no problems with the 3 hour practices for the recital. As far as the mother of the 3 year old, she should be happy that she did get her money back. When you sign the recital form it clearly states that there is a no refund policy. If she had questions maybe she should have asked prior to signing the form (most people know not to sign before you ask all your questions). I have never heard Miss Janice deny a young child use the bathroom, but I have seen kids who have not asked to go have an accident. If this happens it is quickly cleaned and the child is given fresh clothes to change into. I love the Smalling School of the Arts and would never want my children to go elsewhere (and yes we have tried another school, which shall remain nameless and they were unprofessional).

My granddaughter attended this dance school and I was told that during one of the group recital rehearsals Ms. Janice wouldn't let one of the children use the bathroom and she ended up wetting herself. That is beyond ridiculous and I am very happy my granddaughter was taken out of that school.

My experience with Smalling School of the Arts was nothing short of a disaster. We were given very little details in the beginning of the year about the recital and didn't know until late Spring that none of the parents are allowed backstage to help their young children. (We were notified only AFTER months of paying for classes as well as the steep $180 recital fee which included only ONE costume!!) My daughter is a very small 3 year old and was still potty training when she started the class. I wasn't comfortable leaving her with only 3 adults supervising the entire school of children which consists of boys and girls ranging in age from 3 to late teens. (This was to be the situation for 5 3-hour Saturday rehearsals, as well as the 4 to 5 hour dress rehearsal and the performance) When I spoke to Ms. Janice about my concerns she wasn't willing to compromise in any way, shape or form. I volunteered to help backstage and not watch the performance. I also asked if someone else I trusted could go back instead so as not to upset the other girls since their mothers wouldn't be back there. I was shown no concern and no willingness to work with me or other parents with similar issues. It was also next to impossible to speak to Ms. Janice at any time. She does not make herself available to the parents if they have questions and rarely returns phone calls. I was led to believe since I had paid $120 towards the recital that my daughter would still receive her costume in May. Although she was disappointed that she wouldn't be performing in the recital, she was still very excited about her costume. Today I took her to the class fully expecting to get her costume and instead I was given a refund of $120 by her assistant. I am SO angry that I was led to believe I would still be receiving her costume and that I wasn't given the refund immediately upon withdrawing from the recital two months ago. All the other little girls got their bright pink costumes today and my daughter was very upset. She asked me why Ms. Janice hadn't given her a costume and what could I say? I didn't even know the answer myself. I feel that I completely wasted months of time and money that I could have spent in a reputable Dance School and then would have been able to see my sweet little girl in her first recital. I was so excited to put her in dance this year and now she will never be 3 again. I feel that Ms. Janice and Smalling School took that away from me. If they had been honest and up front in the beginning of the year about the recital requirements I NEVER would have enrolled her in the school let alone paid in advance for costumes and tickets which were taken from me at the last possible minute. I am angry and disappointed and I will never recommend them to anyone. It goes without saying that we will absolutely not be back next year.
