This is a very comfortable, cozy restaurant, excellent food, and perfect for brunch. They dont take reservations, but usually the wait is not bad, and if it is there are plenty of restaurants in the area to try. Everytime I've ordered

The food here was just amazing. My cousin recommended we try it and she was spot-on. It sounds like the typical wait is 30-45 minutes on a weekend night, but they took us right away. It was a quite noisy and crowded, we definitely had to yell to hear each other. But the food made it totally worth it.

I got an artichoke salad and lamb made three ways. My boyfriend got the goat cheese salad and and flank steak. All really delicious.

The prices were very reasonable, but I would recommend going on a weekday if possible when I'm assuming there would be less crowds for a more intimate, relaxing experience.

I love brunch because it is two meals in one. You could indulge in pancakes, omelets, French Toast & other food.

I got to Extra Virgin at 11:40AM on Sunday and I thought I beat all the Night Owls in NYC but I was wrong! The restaurant was already packed and we had to wait 20 minutes. Luckily, I was smart enough to snack a bit before I left house.

We got their famous banana French toast and Basque Omelettes. The French toast is huge and drenched in syrup. It is so fluffy and creamy!

My Basque Scrambled has fluffy scrambled eggs with pepper and Chroizo. It is a good portion and tastes excellent.

I would like to try their lunch or dinner some other time.

I am sure everyone says this... I rarely write reviews (positive or negative) but in this case I had to.

The location of Extra Virgin is it's only perk. It is close to fun bars and lounges and directly off of beautiful Perry Street. I have been to Extra Virgin a couple of times and enjoyed the food...was not overly impressed... but it was fine and the menu had some creative appetizers.

However, the behavior and attitude of the staff, especially the hostess, is appalling. I have witnessed countless acts of snobery and rudeness but none compare to the way she treats the patrons of this restaurant. My friend arrived first and ordered a glass of wine at the bar. When I arrived and we were being brought to our table the hostess turns to my friend and says "you cant sit down until you pay for that" referring to her glass of wine. Embarrassed, she said that she already paid. We let it go and shortly after, 8 people arrived and were seated next to us... at a table for 6. One of the girls could not even pull a chair out to sit down. She asked to be seated at a table for 8 that was available in the front and was told that they could not. The reason? "Only certain people are placed at that table" (perhaps models or young hipsters that make the place look "cool"?) The hostess then said that maybe they could fit if they didnt have so many coats and bags. Should they have thrown them in the garbage? left them on the curb? Being that everyone could not fit at the table, the people had to leave the restaurant. They were clearly from out of town and being a native New Yorker, I was embarrassed. It is no wonder we have a reputation for being mean and stuck up.

The perfect West Village Restaurant! Everytime I visit (about once every three months) I have the most enjoyable experience.

Pros: The bartender from Isreal! Wine, Food

Cons: None

This west village brunch mainstay has nice outdoor "deck" seating and some well executed food. Those in the know come Sunday nights for spaghetti and meatballs.

Overall weak service keeps Extra Virgin from being a top notch locals spot. Despite what looks like a busy and full set of waitresses and busboys, service is consistently slow (unclear if this is due to high waitress turnover or understaffing). The hosts are usually unfocused and more preoccupied with talking to other patrons than managing the door. Bartenders are more charming and attentive.

Poorly run. Not a friendly place. The barmen are cool and nice. That's the only positive thing I have to say about this West village overrated place.

one of the WORST dining experiences ever.
As soon as I entered, no one greeted me and you couldn't even tell who the hostess was because she continuously talked to some waitress who worked there.
it took FOREVER to get a table in the cramped space with tables LITERALLY 8-10 inches apart. I also am a petite person, and couldn't get into the chair without hitting people around me.
The waitress, who I will keep anonymous...showed no signs of being nice.
She didn't smile, and wasn't attentive. I asked her a question about wine, and acted as if it was giving her a hernia just to answer it.

Don't go, the food was alright, the service was HORRIBLE.
I have no idea why people go.

DON'T GO IN!!!
The first thing that "greets" us are two awful waitresses with a bad attitude, the place was empty but they still didn't let us choose a table. The cob salad OMG, awful, looked like a plate of garbage and it was tasteless, the salmon tartare plated ugly retro and had no taste. They should think about just closing down.
We had to go to tartine to get some good food after to take the disgusting taste and overall feel away.

My husband and I have walked past Extra Virgin many times when going to another restaurant in the area that we love. Every time we would pass Extra Virgin, we would say that we need to come back to the area and try it. Last night, we finally did try it, and we definitely enjoyed our meal. I wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars, because that is exactly where it falls for me. The wait was about 1/2 an hour at around 9:00 PM. Not sure how late the restaurant is open, but it definitely died down a lot at around 9:45 PM. Maybe they were turning people away. When we did sit down, we enjoyed a delicious and creative meal that wasn't too expensive, considering the quality of the food. For 3 drinks, an appetizer, and 2 main courses, our bill was about $95. We ordered the scallops with bacon and horseradish mashed potatoes and apples for our appetizer. The scallops were delicious and the combination really worked. I had the salmon with corn salsa and grits, and my husband had the truffle encrusted chicken with pea risotto. I would say that both dishes were equally good, but it seemed that the chicken was the real signature dish - very different and very tasty.

I was surprised that some people posted that they were surprised that the meatballs had pork in them. It is fairly common for meatball recipes to contain pork... That dish is no longer on the menu. There were only 2 pasta dishes. The restaurant offers a lot of different seafood dishes, however.

We would definitely come back to Extra Virgin, and we recommend it.

I went here last night for an early dinner and was blown away. I sat outside on the sidewalk where the tables create a play of Ny city and the people passing by. The feel and aura was very romantic on a nice summer night and I highly recommend trying to get a seat outside especially if you are on a date. I live in the West Village and as recreation try to go to a new restaurant each time mostly bc there are hundreds of great ones in the neighborhood. This one is an exception. I can't wait to go back. The artichokes and the poached egg were so delicious! I got the goat cheese salad which is fried in breadcrumbs and then topped with greens in an granny apple vinagrette with pistachios on top. SO GOOD. My boyfriend got a shrimp dish and also loved it. They bring out live oil to the table and ask you to pick between a mild, an almondy tasting one, and spicy. We chose the spicy and were quite pleased. I saw their brunch menu and can't wait to go back. I can't recommend this place enough! I'm confused by other peoples negative comments about the service. The service was excellent. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The presentation of the food was beautiful. I feel like there are just some people who will complain about anything no matter what and I think the negative comments on this restaurant are due to those types of people unfortunately.

Was there on Sunday nite and ordered the Sunday nite platter - spaghetti and meatballs. The service was fine. Everyone seemed very attentive. When the spaghetti and meatballs arrived, it all looked very good. I am particularly fond of the old spaghetti and meatballs and was not dissatisfied when I started this dish. The meatballs, though, tasted pretty undercooked and I had stomach pains later in the evening. I cannot say there was a direct relation, but I rarely have an upset stomach after a meal and my dinner partner had diahhrea afterwards. But back to the restaurant. After we finished eating (I could not eat my entire meal - not just because the meatballs were undercooked, but because they were HUGE), the folks next to us asked what was in the meatballs. The waitress answered that their meatballs are a mix of beef, veal and pork. Four things: 1) diners ordering meatballs automatically expect that their meatballs are made of beef unless otherwise mentioned (there was no mention of contents on the menu), 2) Jewish folks will break a cardinal rule by eating these (usually unawares), 3) those who are against eating veal because of the way these animals are treated may just end up eating it anyways, and 4) pork undercooked can be a particularly dangerous meal. I would have given this restaurant more than 1 star had the meatball ingredients been on the menu, but they were hidden behind the term "meatballs", leaving the diner to have to determine the ingredients himself. Hope this helps. BD

It's been a long time since I've been to a restaurant that cared so little about a patron's experience.

My dining partner and I each ordered a meat dish, which arrived 4 minutes later, TEPID WARM. What?! They actually served us cooked meat in less time than it would have taken us to go to the restroom, and it arrived WARM! When we complained to the waitress, she duly removed our plates. But when they came back with our food 10 minutes later, they brought us, unmistakably, the EXACT SAME PLATES AS WE HAD FIRST RECEIVED, only this time, they had been heated up more. WTF?! I've never been treated by a restaurant so contemptuously before.

But don't take my word for it. Feel free to waste your time and money (and sense of self-respect) at this awful excuse for a restaurant. Just don't complain later that you haven't been warned...

Was very pleased with my experience at Extra Virgin. Took my partner there for his birthday and we had a great meal - food was delicious, service was solid and the restaurant had a nice ambiance. While the hostess was super friendly and accurate regarding the wait time, this restaurant should allow patrons to make reservations. With wait times of 45 minutes or more typical on a Friday or Sat night (we went at 8PM on a friday), it is rude to the customer that reservations are not taken. While I really enjoyed the restaurant, it is just not worth having to wait 45 minutes or more to be seated...there is a better use of my time.

Does it get more charming than this location? If you can picture the best West Village street, this is it. A cobble stone street, tree-lined, with a row of gorgeous town houses, tables and chairs outside, and big windows that bring the outside in for those seated inside. Its tight inside, tables are packed close, but it feels cosy, assuming you don?t mind your next door neighbors hearing what you have to say. The menu is awesome ? the best French fries you?ll ever eat, and good burgers, egg dishes, etc. We go there for brunch normally. The crowd is slightly euro and the staff is mostly eastern euro for what seems to be a largely Mediterranean menu. I lived in ny a long time, this is on my shortlist of top brunch places to go in the Fall or Winter when this place is at its best. Get there early or get ready to wait ? this place takes no reservations and the wait can be long during prime time. I hear the dinner is great too, they have a special every night.

We went there on a recommendation and were not disappointed. While a small place, the decor is wonderfully-lit and cozy. The food was imaginative, tasty and beautifully presented. One of us had ordered a risotto which came in a small pumpkin.
The sauces with the entrees were original and made the dishes interesting.
Service was impeccable and at the end of the evening we received 2 additional desserts compliments of the chef for taking a little longer with the order.
Overall excellent, we will be going back.

came here for brunch on sat on the recommendation from a friend who lives in the area and has a pleasant time. I am not big on breakfast so I chose the oregano roasted chicken sandwich (avocado, tomato, pancetta, cucumber yogurt, grilled bread) w/ salad which was quite tasty tho it was like any other chicken sandwich you would get at any place but the cucumber yogurt was yummy. My friend got the banana French toast (caramelized bananas, whipped mascarpone) ? mmmmmmm, sooo good, I love mascarpone, this dish was super sweet. Best part of brunch was the bloody mary, well executed, not too strong, just the right amount of alcohol and they made it nice and spicy

I used to really love this place, especially the Sunday night special of spaghetti and meatballs! I am not ordinarily a big pasta eater, but they are just delicious, made with three kinds of meat and served with a great sauce. The order is also huge -- it easiy serves two.

These days, though, the service can really suffer. I recently went there with a group of six people. We had a reservation, but were seated at a table for four anyway, right near a server's station. It was uncomfortable, especially considering the restaurant was too hot. Then they basically ignored us for the length of our visit: we didn't get our wine until we were nearly finished with our entrees, and we were left with our dirty plates for about a half an hour before they were cleared -- unpleasant on such a tight table. Several of us (all long-time fans of this restaurant) thought the food was not as good as it once was. When the bill came, the waitress had already given herself a 20% tip.

Pros: food is usually good

Cons: service can be poor

I love the brunch menu at this place--- especially the baked eggs- YUM.
THe outside seating is great for people watching and is not in the sun in the morning so its a great place to hang out. The service is lovely and they have a great menu for drinks and food. Highly reccommend for a brunch date with a boy/girl friend or even parents!

A few friends and I headed over to Extra Virgin for brunch one Saturday morning. The place was very busy and crowded, which could only be a good sign about the food. We all ordered different items off the menu. My choice was the french toast... it was amazing! I think I talked about how much I enjoyed my brunch for the next 3 days. I will definitely stop by again for brunch and hope to try dinner there as well.

Had a great dinner here. Uncomfortable wait at the bar but once we were seated the food and service were excellent. Would definitely recommend.

Since I've been personally and libelous insulted by an individual who goes by the eloquent moniker "gethistr8," I'd like to clarify that I am neither a b*&%@ nor a moron. I am someone who was insulted by the kitchen when your girlfriend decided to return the fries she ordered. I also apologized profusely to you, but of course, you probably don't remember that. And FYI, the table to your right was unhappy because of a misprint on the menu. This was not my fault, but I was chastised by the kitchen about this as well. Despite the error on the menu, that table left me a generous tip. (In your case, I worked simply for the pleasure of your company.) When the manager spoke with me, it was actually in regards to the fact that I was so upset about the kitchen. After working for six hours moving constantly, without eating and without a break, I seriously doubt you would do much better.

In any case, your malcontent's forum was successful. I was fired. Thank you for making a terrible day even worse. Maybe one fine brunch you and your porcine girlfriend will look up from the pool of hollandaise you're greedily lapping and realize that "gorgonzola" is spelled with three "o's," as in "oh, who's the moron now?"

My girlfriend and i have been here several times, and the brunch is great! It compares favorably with most places in the city. BUT....

Unfortunately, we went yesterday, and were the unlucky recipients of a new waitress - Caitlin.
Avoid her at all costs! She was an awful waitress and should not be placed in social situations with other human beings.
She yelled at my girlfriend like an adult would a child. The crime? My girlfriend had the "gall" to ask whether we could have a side of gargonzola rather than the fries and gargonzola which were on their way to the table.
Rather than saying something normal like "i will check witht he kitchen/manager" or even "i do not know if we can take that back im sorry" as most good waitstaff would - she chose to yell at my girlfriend, ruining her meal. Rather than us enjoying the company we were with and enjoying the food, her behavior was so atrocious that it became the topic of conversation during the meal. Totally unacceptable!

The fact that they hired this girl, and continue to employ her, reflects poorly on the restaurant. We saw her receiving complaints from other customers while we were there, and saw her chastised by the manager for an entirely different incident!
Restaurants are a service industry, not a domain for venting the problems in your life to customers!

Anyway, we still recommend this restaurant, but hopefully EV will wisen up and fire this moron before she ruins another person's meal. With her attitude, this is inevitable as long as she is allowed in public, and out of her anger management classes.

Was one of my favorite neighborhood resaurants when it first appeared, but extra virgin has not withstood the test of time. Chewing gum stuck under the bar (which dislodged itself on my pants) and a waitress who had to go check what was in the nightly special lasagna (only to come back and repeat what was listed on the menu verbatim) about sums up the experience. Food was ok, but no where near the consistently simple and dilicious cuisine it previously offered.

My favourite place for brunch. The restaurant is in a tiny, adorable street of West village. Bellinis and smoked salmon - egg benedict are a must.
The only problem is that you can not seat as long as all the people of your group have not arrived, as the manager explained to me. However, after waiting for 30 minutes for my friend who was so late, the manager was very nice and gave us the first available outdoor table.
Service was perfectly ok, and has always been each time I went back.

I took my mom here on Saturday night before the dinner rush. It was a very cute and cozy place. I opted for the halibut - apparently one of the only permanent items, and the most popular, on the menu. It was phenomenal! My mom opted for the black bass and it was excellent too. This place was a great find and I'll definitely be going back for more. I agree, though, the waitresses outfits were atrocious (but who cares), and the music was a tad loud (my mom wasn't too thrilled when Prodigy came on), but the food made up for it!

Food & Fashion have never been paired together in such a horrifying way. I've been a loyal customer to Extra Virgin since the very beginning and season after season these waitresses are tormented by management to wear these pieces of "FABRIC" called uniforms. I never thought I would write a comment on one of these websites, but I found myself feeling so bad for these girls I had to write something. Besides the uniforms the food and service at Extra Virgin is Great. But I guess you'll all have to see for yourself. PLEASE STOP WITH THE BAD FASHION AND JUST WEAR BLACK!

This is one of my favourite restaurants in the Village. For a restaurant this hip and full of so many beautiful people, the food is surprisingly good: I rate the delectable chicken, which is served on an aromatic truffle risotto, and any of the fish dishes.

I'd also recommend the seating outside for warm evenings. The street is tree lined, and there are fantastic people watching opportunities. There's usually a bit of a wait to sit outdoors, but well worth it and a good excuse to sample some of the excellent cocktails at the bar!

With food this good, coupled with a thoughtful, decently priced wine list, the only vague moan I can muster is the slightly disinterested service. Extra Virgin is a delight, and I cannot recommend it warmly enough.

since the opening, i had eaten here pretty frequently. one night i went with some friends from out-of-town and they brought their kids. they had a special that was served for one or two people. there was some confusion with the order and they brought out these huge dishes for the two kids. the couple we were with thought they were serving one order split for the two kids and the restaurant charged us for two seperate orders. when we spoke with the manager and the waitress all they cared about was that we did not say anything until we saw the bill, but when we thought we were getting free food we had nothing to say. the manager said there was nothing she could do; it was our mistake. aren't managers supposed to be helpful and not petty?

Contrary to what a few miserable "New Yorkers", may say, Extra Virgin is a fun, little up and coming hot spot. Really great food, (Brunch's French Toast, to the new Monte Cristo sandwich, to Dinner's Tortelloni, or even the Hanger Steak Au Poivre) Joey Fortunato's recipes are fabulous. Great ambience. A little tight in the busy moments, but hey..it's NY right? Never had a problem with the Mgr, or host. Actually, (at brunch) the host made sure that we were informed about our seating time, and kept a cool head all while doing like 4 different jobs, but I never saw that he was rude to anyone. He even addressed me by my name on my way out. All in all, be on the watch for one of the west ville's best kept secrets...Plenty of eye candy all around, from celeb sightings, to that "obnoxious" host. Highly recommended.

I made a reservation that was just a couple people over the Pre Fix menu number. The pre fix is $50/person even though the bill would eb about $38 if you ordered app, entree and dessert. We requested from management to avoid the pre fixe and she said they would discuss and call me back. Wen they DID call back, it was to tell me my reservation had been cancelled and another party book....sorry. This was my friend's FAVORITE restaurant (which i stressed to management) and they clearly had no profesisonalism to call me and say "no we can not honor tyour request, do you still want the reservation"? They just went ahead ad CANCELLED IT. Don't go there and support such terrible treatment!

Have been there a few times for brunch and thought it an ok, if not overpriced, place. Than last Sunday, I walked out before being seatedNEVER had I done that before. The host was obnoxious and would not seat my group-eventhough we had a reservation and waited over a half hour for our table! There are so many good places in NYwhy bother with the mediocre? extra virgin? more like extra rude!

Went there last week for my sis's birthday, on a crowded Saturday night. We were seated immediately. The food was delicious (esp the mushroom risotto) and reasonably priced by NYC standards--three of us had apps, dinner, a bottle of wine, three cocktails and dessert for $150. We had no problem with the service, not overly friendly but effecient. Would definetly go back.

THE most disastrous restaurant experience in my 30+ years of living in New York.

Service was a sneering, snappy bullying by a slack-jawed out-of-work soap actor that wouldn't pass for acceptable treatment of your pet. My martini, $14 BTW, arrived half empty and my date's cosmo was "undrinkably sweet."

Upon remarking to our waiter that the service was "unacceptable," he smirked and told me "then don't come back."

Almost forgot the obscene conversation at the table next to us or the loud "eazy listening" CD playing repeat on the stereo. I did happen to notice a waitress being yelled at by the bartender and felt awful for her.

This place wouldn't pass muster in your cheapest Atlantic City casino, much less one of the most beautiful streets in NY.

TO CITYSEARCH: please revamp this "9" rating. It can't possibly be accurate. This is the worst restaurant experience I've ever had.

I've been here a few of times and usually the food is great - last night however left us a little irked - our appetizers were great - the trouble came with the hangar steak au poivre - there was no poivre - there was hardly any steak - I'd say about 3 onces - and it was cold - I asked for it to be reheated - the host took the plate to the kitchen - it came back drenched in hot balsamic sauce - tasting foul - and from that point on we were ignored by our server and pretty much anyone else except the busboy. No one said sorry - No one said anything. Errors happen in the kitchen - I know that - But the FOH service here is terrible - We paid and left with a vow never to go back.

I brought two friends here to celebrate one of their birthdays over brunch. I kindly asked the hostesses if they could help with bringing out cupcakes I bought from Magnolia for a birthday surprise. They have the nerve to charge $5 a person for this (plate charges for bringing something from 'outside') but then forget to tell our waitress so they don't end up bringing it out at all. I had to remind them. If you're charging me $15 for that, the least you can do is remember! They were rude overall that last Sunday. The first time I went I had great service and thought it was a great place to go back to. The food is good. Too bad the attitude is not.

Went for brunch on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The brunch menu is pretty standard with good staples like Eggs Benedict, omlettes and is decently priced. My eggs benedict with smoked salmon was great, another table favorite was the baked eggs with spinich and ham. The frittes with fondue sauce was a must try. Service was attentive. The restaurant is kind of small so reservations are a must. Went with a large group which may not have been the best place to go with so many people but they were very accomodating. A great place to people watch and dine on a casual, relaxed Sunday.

Despite a very long wait for a table outside, the meal was delicious. The hostess and the servers were very amicable and sweet. The chef ensure my meal was free of all ingredients I am allergic too and the dishes I ordered tasted amazing. The summer drink specials were tasty and creative. Sitting outside on a summer evening in the West Village was the perfect ambiance for a date.
