Happy hour. Quite empty. 2 bartenders, not really doing anything. 15 minutes, no service, not even a Hi. Walked out with my wife. Most likely will not be back, too many places with good food AND good service.

It doesn't matter what you get here it's going to be awesome. Every time I go here I try to have something new and haven't been disappointing at all. There's a good crowd and the service is good as well.

Maryland Crab Soup and Jumbo Lump Crab cakes were prepared perfectly and exactly what I was looking for. The crab cakes did not have too much filler in it..mostly crab meat which is a tough find in NYC. The place is always buzzing - I've

Went to City Crab for lunch on Friday. Had a bowl of the maryland crab soup which was amazing...makes you feel like you are chowing down inside a crab house in Maryland. I then had a small Caesar salad and a jumbo lump Crab cake

I came here late night with my friends for their one-time deal of 1 1/4 lb lobster for half the price, which is about $13. This is probably the best deal I have ever seen. It also comes with a side dish.

Our waitress was new but he was very friendly and attentive. The lobster tastes fresh and it is very juicy. There isn't much seasoning because it doesn't really need it. We got sides of spinach, meshed potato, and sweet potato fries. Everything is good but the spinach lacks some seasoning.

Overall, the experience was great and the restaurant has tons of diners. I wish they have the lobster special all the times!

The food isn't cooked properly. The management and waiters are rude, the food took almost an hour and there were no apologies given, only "its busy so its going to take a while". Its so not worth it. There are much better, more authentic, less expensive seafood restaurants in the city with better atmosphere. The only place cheesier is Red Lobster... I take that back, they are tied. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place like the plague.

I went for restaurant week, and I was very impressed. Although the bar downstairs was too busy when we came early for a drink, a spot was cleared at the bar upstairs soon after we got there. There is only a tap downstairs though, and my beer brought up from downstairs was warm (one of the reasons for only 4 stars). The servers were all very accommodating and did not give us a hard time at all that 2 of our party of 4 ended up letting us know that they were not coming, and we were not rushed at all while we thought we were still waiting for the other two. The chowder was rich and tasty. I got the twin lobsters, which was a great deal at restaurant week, and I usually ONLY like lobster when I'm in Maine and it just came out of the ocean a day or two ago (live lobsters in tanks just don't cut it). One of the lobsters was suberb. Of the second, I gave one claw to my roommate and had one myself, and was very disappointed with the consistency. My roommate assured me that her claw was good, but I think that perhaps for restaurant week they give you one fresh lobster and one not as fresh. My roommate's crab cakes were good, with actual big pieces of crab, which is not so common (I don't think she liked them so much, but I thought they were yummy). The chocolate mousse was rich and indulgent. Overall, I was very pleased with the food for restaurant week, especially as I mentioned I usually only like lobster straight out of the ocean in Maine; and the service was wonderful - it meant a lot to us that they didn't try to rush us or get upset that two of the four didn't come. I'd like to go back for a happy hour and will keep City Crab in mind for a splurge for dinner for a special occasion.

I've been residing in the NYC for 16 years, this place was my favorite restaurant until things started to change. I receive lots of visitors and always took them to this place. They in turn became frequent diners as well. City Crap has started to slip with their bait and switch specials and recently I had the pleasure of encountering a ROACH on my table!! Yes, that right a roach. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever experienced. I called for the manager, who never bothered to come over. We left and have vowed to never return. I have been spreading this news with anyone that will listen as well as, notifying media outlets and health department. Be aware this place has gone down the drain. Good luck.

The restaurant had a "special" for a 2 pound lobster for $20. When I got the bill, each lobster dinner was listed for $40 - apparently the $20 was meant to indicate $20 for each pound.

The waitress deferred to the manager who refused to rectify this. $40 for a lobster is what you would expect to pay in an upscale restaurant, not this middle of the road joint. I felt really burned by this place, the manager didn't care.

I ate at City Crab 6 months ago and the food and service were excellent, but on my most recent visit (8/22/09) the standards had dropped so low that it was a shell (pun intended) of its former self. We brought out of town guests with us, and it was a total embarrassment. I, personally, will never return of my own free will. Here are the details:
1. Our server didn't mention any specials, and when we asked he quickly mumbled something unintelligible.
2. Five minutes after ordering, our server returned and told me they had run out of crab legs. Yes, out of CRAB legs at City CRAB! This was at 7:30, and not the end of the night. 3. We waited an hour and a ten minutes for our entrees, our server ignored us the entire time and never ONCE stopped by to explain the delay. In fact, we were seated on the 2nd floor and he was nowhere to be seen on the entire floor. An apology and explanation would have gone a long way to alleiving our annoyance (several of us having worked/working in the restaurant business) but instead, we were left in the lurch getting hungrier and more irritated.
4. When our food finally arrived after the hour and ten minute wait, it was uniformly cold. I was stuck with cold crab claws, and the rest of the table was served cold swordfish or cod with cold mashed potatoes. We managed to get our server's attention, and without apologizing, he took the plates back to be warmed up (microwaved). After waiting so long, we were pretty livid. He returned with the manager (who had been lounging in a booth by the door watching TV the ENTIRE time ) who didn't really seem to care about our complaints. He agreed that, yes, the service was indeed bad, and quickly scampered back to his booth after assuring us he would fix the situation.
5. After such a crappy experience, we expected a good chunk of our meal to be comped, but we merely received a random $38 credit toward our $270 bill! Our food was worth nowhere near that amount, but we just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.

My advice: There are MANY great seafood places in the city all competing for your business in this economy, and there is NO reason to settle for a place this awful when you're spending that much money. City Crab does not care about its customers or its food and it shows. From our party alone, they lost 3 repeat customers and 2 potential new ones, and I'm sure they will continue to lose more with their horrendous customer service.

I think the great reviews are from employees of this restaurant. I ate there at lunchtime service, around 2PM. First of all, I was brought a dirty cup and saucer to make my own tea with. I refused the entire thing and told the waiter to take it away. Then my sister and I ordered the gumbo and the baked clams. The gumbo was a 1 on a scale of 1-5. It looked like slimy goop, but I was hungry, so I ate it. I moved onto the clams which looked horrible. It was tiny and had toasted dried breadcrumbs on top, which all fell off the plate once I stuck my fork in to get to the actual clam. The clam was like chewing on rubber. I had to sp!t it out. We told our waiter, who took that off our bill and apologized. I assured him it was no fault of his. I think the only pleasant experience I had was meeting our waiter, because the service was the best thing that came out of the restaurant. I wouldnt recommend the lunchtime service here at all.

We went on a busy Friday night and ate in the bar area downstairs the place was packed but our service was still great. Everything arrived as it should, and in a timely manner. We took up the Restaurant Week prix fix menu assuming that the food would be just ok, but we were stunned at how good the food was! Oysters were fresh & tasty, crabcake was outstanding - lots of crab meat not lots of filler, tuna steak was perfectly seared, sea bass cooked to perfection, and the desserts (key lime and peach cobbler) were even top notch. I really can't imagine that any of this was frozen, it all tasted great, even the accompanying sides were fresh & original. We are definitely going back.

The atmosphere leaves something to be desired as does the food. My appetizer tasted like it was prefrozen and then thawed- not fresh at all. The fish entree was tasteless and the sides are presented poorly and in tons of heavy cream. The coffee we were served was burnt and cold. In all the best part of the meal was the bread and butter. Wait staff was fair and gave me an attitude.

Save your money and find another fish place.

I don't know why anyone would write a bad review about City Crab and Seafood Company. This seafood restaurant is excellent. I went there on my birthday with my sister and I had the crab legs sauteed in garlic butter, sauteed spinach, crab cakes and jasmine rice. The crab legs are tender, sweet and delicious and you get so much that you will have to take it home. the spinach is mouth watering and the crab cakes will cause you to bow down to them. Also the jasmine rice adds just the right flavor to your meal. The meal was delicious and the atmosphere is fun, relaxing and comfortable. I recommended this restaurant to two of my co-workers and they went there and have been raving about how good the food and atmosphere is ever since. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants what they pay for. The portions are just right and the food is so rich that it only takes a little to fill you.

First time that I went to City Crab I was impressed at being in a restaurant that had clams and crabs in manhattan. Now that I've moved around a little I'm not impressed at all. I went there on my first date with my boyfriend and for our anniversary we decided that we should go there again. It's over priced and the food is bland. It has no unique flavor, it has no taste to set it apart or even make it worth it. I wouldn't dismiss the place because after all it is a nice restaurant and the staff does try to make it a nice evening. I just wouldn't pick the place out of all the others.

I love seafood and am very impressed with City Crab. I went to this place for a first date on a Friday and got right in without waiting. We sat at one of the bar tables near the front and the place was packed, but it was a great dining experience. Not too loud or too dark or too romantic. We started with espresso martinis, which were phenomenal, and the 12 piece oyster sampler which was a bit much for 2 people to handle (after about 3 they start tasting like boogers going down). I had the Stuffed Atlantic Salmon and it was very, very tasty. It wasn't drowned in sauce or overcooked, and it was a good portion, enough that I ate about half and took the other half home with me. The only thing I can think of that could use a bit of improvement was the fact that the waiter talked a bit too fast so I couldn't understand what he was suggesting, it seemed like he just wanted to move on to the next table. Overall, I'd give it a B+.

I ate at this restaurant with a friend and had a very aggrevating experience. They had advertised a 2 pound lobster for $20 in their specials, which is what I ordered. When I got the bill, they charged me $40. Apparently, the $20 price was by the pound. I have never seen a pricing structure like this, and they refused to rectify the situation.

I went to City Crab last Saturday and had a wonderful dinner! I made reservations about 10 days in advance and I rec'd a call that afternoon to confirm...which I was very grateful for since I had forgotten exactly what time I made the reservation for. We were seated immediately and within 15-20 minutes were were already chowing down on our appetizers and drinks. The service was superb; our waiter was attentive, but not in our faces every 2 seconds either! We were seated in the upstairs dining area which was less noisy than the downstairs...also the lighting was a little dimmer upstairs which gave it better ambience. The tables were a bit too close for my liking along the wall, but luckily I wasnt on the laps of the patrons sitting next to us...but we could have joined their conversation or vice versa! I thoroughly enjoyed my entree, linguini with white clam sauce, but my boyfriend thought his swordfish was a bit overcooked. They did have a pretty good selection of desserts (most made on the premises), wines/cocktails. Overall, a good time for the price.

Pros: Good selection of seafood, good price, fast service

Cons: Crowded

so, i went to dinner with a few girlfriends this past saturday to City Crab. I was hesitant after reading initial reviews, but was pleased at the end of the night. we had a great appetizer, some good wine and our entrees were delicious. our waiter could have been a little more attentive. but other than that, we were al pleased with our choice. considering we had 2 bottles of wine, it was not as expensive as i thought it was going to be. i would definitely go back here again and i would recommend it.

well, we have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, but never went to this place because it looked like a One Fish Two Fish Chain...we should have stuck with our instincts...The hostess did not know how to work the Open Table system...shrugging her shoulders when we asked if she had checked us in ...lovely start...the other hostess who seated us..hasn't the day of wearing shirts that are too small so stuff hangs out over? stared us down when asked if we could be seated at another table...love the glare we got...made us feel really special..
well the place is filthy...exposed wires upstairs, bussers trucking thru the room with busboxes on there heads
with dirty dishes? just what i want to see when spending $75 per person for food...oh, they attempted to serve our mains before we had finished our apps...well guess what...we got the same tuna back..not rare anymore...dried out..but who cares about anything in this place? and why is the manager chomping on gum? you have got to be kidding? this is ny people...well, now i have to reply to Open Table that listed me as a no show...ohh...i have nothing but time on my hands to do this kinda stuff...be warned...many other great restaurants for great fish, service and decor...

My boyfriend and I have never been so disappointed by food at a NYC restaurant. Both of us used to frequent City Crab and were always pleased. However, last night the food was so bad it will definitely be our last visit there. The place was nearly empty (granted it was a Monday night, but I remember it being packed all the time). The service was great, we were very attentively waited on. Our calamari appetizer was pretty good, nothing amazing. Our entrees were dispicable. My boyfriend got the Alaskan surf and turf: The filet mignon was dry and tough and tasted it had been sitting out for days. The king crab leg was rubbery and fishy. I had 5 meager scallops with a bunch of cold, soggy potatoes and some sugar snap peas (the best thing we ate). Needless to say we were quite disappointed, and what's worse, with tip our bill came to over $100. We don't mind spending money on food, but if it's barely edible that's a real shame. We felt compelled to tip our waitress since she was the only good thing about the whole place! Maybe this was just a fluke since we haven't been in a while, but I will never take the chance again. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED.

The seafood was great and there is a tremendous wine selection. However, I was not impressed by the size of the lobster. I definetly recommend City Crab, but if you're looking for the biggest lobsters in nyc The Palm is worth checking out. Another plus on City Crab is that they participate in restaurant week.

Outstanding sea food at a great location near union sq. The staff were friendly, knowledgeble and made us feel very welcome. Whilst it wont happen for everyone, they didn't have our first choice of wine and so we were offered a fantastic (more expensive) bottle at the same price. Crab was excellent as was everything that came with it.

The place was just okay for my tastes. The fish I ordered was a little on the dry side but the services was pretty good. We didn't wait long during the lunch rush and the portions are pretty decent.

Tried this place without making reservations and was seated right away. Ok, so I didn't try the crab even though this is what the restaurant is known for. I thought it just looked silly how everyone was wearing bibs and eating with their hands. I guess it's just not my style. I had their salmon and I remember it being very good. The service was very friendly.

I had the same Seafood Sampler the previous person had. My party of three shared one appetizer prior to our entrees. The entree is two scallops, three shrimp, and a crab cake, I couldn't finish all the food. Its a big portion. City Crab isn't cheap and I couldn't afford to go every Friday night but it is good, and the Maryland 'tini's are delish (they're strangely not on the menu)

First off, let me say it was not I who paid for the dinner. However, when ordering an entre for over $32.00 one does expect more than three small shrimp, one crab cake and two broiled scallops. This was more appetizer size than anything else. As for taste, you could have blindfolded me and I could not identified the flavor of what I was eating. To say this was a total rip off is an understatement. Poor value and quality for the money. Mainly for tourists and those on unlimited expense accounts. Not for us native New Yorkers who should know better. Now I do and hope to spare others this dismal experience. Filthy Ladies room.

Good service, good sorbet, bad seafood. The lump crab meat Napolean. Ridiculous - little mounds of shredded crab meat doused in mayonnaise and not much else piled onto three tomato slices. Lump crab meat should stay in lumps. It was like eating over-priced tuna fish.
You'd expect City Crab to know how to prepare and serve crab.

service was snobbish, slow and very patronizing. The prices were ...shall I put it gently? EXORBITANT! surf and turf almost 50 bucks. a crab cake a a steak 50 bucks. a reg. 2 pound lobster would have been 70 dollars. Surely not worth going.

place deserves all it's bad reviews. Should have checked citysearch 1st but relied on brother to choose. 1st off svc very very poor. went for brunch 12 noon sharp, seated quickly, but there on end speed of svc almost broke the sleep limits. We had 2 servers helping our party of 12, screwed up 3 orders had to re-do (frightful you never know what chef's mood is when they make mistakes). drinks took forever & then some. When food came, some dishes were already cold. This after requesting to bring them out as they are done so we can avoid this - totally ignored. They tried comping our kids with desserts (of course well received by my little devils), but this can not make up for poor svc, mediocre food (maybe burgers & fries were ok) & ineptitude of it's staff. AVOID THIS PLACE LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR BRUNCH!

What a mistake. Don't go here. Where do I begin? Mushy shrimp cocktail. Pre-cooked seared tuna that could have been a TV dinner. The waiter took 20 minutes to even acknowledge our presence even though the place wasn't very crowed. That should have been our warning. The table was draftly and cold. When we complained the Maitre d' wanted to debate with us rather than find a way to satisfy us.

The last time I was here, I left feeling disappointed. I went back last night and once again felt disappointed. I think the prices have gone up dramatically over the years. The food is good, but definitely not worth the price. The service was mediocre -- my waitress didn't know anything about oysters. To top it off, a 20% gratuity was added to a check for 5 people, which I thought to be improper, especially in light of the mediocre service.

After years of walking by this place, we decided to have a late dinner. It was fantastic! Low key, great service, funny helpful waiter and so much fun. The food is not cheap but it was worth it. Our group spent a while but did not feel rushed like other places in the city. Will be going back for good food and good times again soon.
