DOJO is a great deal for the money. It is one of my favorite quick stops by school. Be wary of the weekend crowds (it can get packed)! Easy atmosphere, no frills and food so cheap. Just so so cheap. It also tastes nice, so its not like MCDonald's cheap or whatever.

Cons: Weird patrons, sloooow service

I ate places that are better, but most resturaunts are worse..... There is a bar with brewed drinks. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Me and my friends eat here quite often. Veggie and soy burgers are delicious, with the tahini dressing and a side order of avacados. They serve you fast here. On weekends, especially sundays, there can be big lines and crowds with the kids from NYU. I like this place is near the entertaining Washington Square park where I ride my bike. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner specialties are awesome and scrumptious. It can be alittole expensive depending on what you order. The deserts are amazing. I'd take this place over McDonalds and Burger King anyday.

no nonsense service, fast, cheap and good. Not everything on the menu is awesome but there is enough here to keep me coming back.

yes, all Japanese places have orange ginger/sesame/soy salad dressing, but NO place has one as good as Dojo's. I would eat there everyday if I was on campus that often. Nothing but love for them.

THERE IS something for everyone at this Health Food/Japanese/American style diner in the middle of NYU. Whether you want to eat healthy or entertaining out-of-owners, the selection of sandwiches, burgers, entrees and breakfasts is quite large.
THE FOOD was served super fast which was perfect if you need to get back to the office or class. I had their version of the turkey club served on healthy grain roll that included cucumber and some type of sprouts. The miso soup is very good. All the vegetables are fresh and colorful. If you are not a vegetarian, as I am, you might need to season your food to your palate.
THE SPACE is divided into two sections. The bar has enough seating for about a dozen patrons. The dining room is walled on two sides of windows and has a low-key vibe. The staff was helpful and nice.
CASH ONLY!!

I started going to the one on E. 8th st because it was so close to my apartment. When they shut it down for health code problems (which, though i miss the close proximity, I don't blame them if it really was that bad) I started going to the one on W. 4th. I've been going here for 3 years and I love it. I'm a vegetarian and the food is always great. I always started with the French onion soup and then the Vegetable Don. Both are great. My fiancee has gotten the Veggie Burger every time and says it's her favorite and the best she's ever had (and we've tried many places since). The service can be spotty but the place is so cheap and the food is so good that I will keep going back. I recommend this place to everyone who wants a healthy, cheap meal.

No kidding, try ordering the "wings" appetizer, it has hair. Me and my GF almost threw up. This was our third and last visit, the food was always subpar but never out and out disgusting and it was a cheap place to eat and have a beer. This time was different - I know tar meat when I see it, don't believe me? Go see for yourself, I am getting sick just thinking about it. BTW - they won't let me write "tar" the normal way so I have to reverse it.

I don't know what exactly is in the tahini dressing.. but it's freaking awesome. This place is great for a quick bite without hurting your wallet -- just don't forget cash. The food has always been tasty, but service is sometimes less than perfect. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely worth a try.

This place has terrible food and I have been vegetarian for nearly 16 years. I believe it has also been closed down many times for health violations (?) - the salad I ordered had dirt on it. I have never eaten at a place that felt so dirty in my life (and I have also travelled to many third world countries). I would not return unless this was the last place to eat on earth!

I've been going to Dojo for a couple years now and I've always been happy with the veggie and soy burgers, and the girly drinks like cosmos and razberitinis. The veggie burger dish is by far my fave though and it's always delicious, they serve it in a pita instead of a bun and it comes with the tahini dressing which is really delicious. The only time I was ever dissatisfied with an order was when I got chicken once and it was pretty dry and didn't taste too good-- and I definitely felt sick later, though I'm not quite sure if it was from the chicken or just because I was really drunk that night. But either way I'm not much of a chicken person, the thing I'm really the authority on is veggie burgers and cheesecake-- both of which were great! :) Cheesecake is perfect, not too light and not too heavy. The only thing you take a gamble on is the waitsaff, sometimes you can get a good server or a decent server (I tipped very well the last time I went there with my friends because I was impressed at how cosmos the waitress was able to carry back to my table without spilling a single drop), but there's points when I had very disappointing service. Still, the good food, good prices, and fun atmosphere keep me coming back. Also, they don't take credit cards, it's cash only. That's a slight drawback since I prefer to charge most things I use/go to and prefer not to carry cash.

I have never in my ENTIRE life dined at such a horrible place. The service was atrocious and the management worse! I ordered a soy burger dinner. It came about 1 minute later (no exaggeration) and was ice cold. I thought to myself if maybe it was supposed to be served that way...I told the waitress and she brought it back. It came back to me about 2 minutes later....seems it had been shoved in a microwave so it was sorta cold sorta warm. I asked the waitress again nicely to bring it back and I proceeded to order the chicken yakitori. She came back, lunged in my face and exlcaimed with such a rude demeanor i thought I had done something wrong "That was not cold it was warm!" Before I could say anything she stormed off. The yakitori came a few minutes later and was disgusting! Oil oozed off of the chicken and it tasted like it had been sitting in crisco for days. When I was ready to pay (and yes I still intended to tip as I am a waitress as well) I put a 20.00 on the chck and patiently awaited my change. She saw me sitting there and came up to me, threw her face in mine, and yelled "YOU can pay at the bar!" I said "I'm not sure why your being so rude..." and she cut me off and said "If YOU have a probelm YOU can speak to the manager". I went to pay and the manager just took the money from my hand. I asked what the waitresses name was and began explaining that she was extremely rude. he cut me off and said "oh sorry" and proceeded to walk away. I was so beside myself I couldnt believe it. I proceeded to state my case but the manager couldnt have cared less...he smiled at me and chuckled. Whoever owns this place should think about another career option. Running restaurants & managing staff just is not his/her style. I would never eat her again if you paid me to.

I got a chicken udon dish. It was bland, i needed to add a cup of soysauce. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy but the chicken was fatty dark meat. Not very tasty and very no-frills.

My friend and I decided to catch Dojo partly because of its popularity, but mainly for its prices. They have an extensive menu which would satisfy any palate and picky eaters' cravings. I ordered the humus sandwich and a side of frnech fries. The pita was fresh as were the vegetables. The french were thin and crunchy and the portions were huge. My friend, the "picky-eater" put together her own entree from the sides menu which was cheap and convenient. She ordered chicken breast and broccoli. The chicken was moist and crispy in all the right places and the broccoli was fresh and perfectly steamed. The total bill was only 12.25 and we left with pleasantly full stomachs and promises to return.

Dojo is what you call a cool hip restaurant. And what's best is that it's for everyone! There are some very delicious veggie dishes, but the meat lover will be deeply satisfied! The prices are relatively low to the other places in the area. They serve breakfast until 5pm. I had dish that included two eggs, steak, fries (the potato shaped kind), and bread for 4.95. I was full and satisfied. I really liked those eggs (sunny-side-up. They don't call them eggs benedict)Service can be smashing! This Dojo is situated at a great spot! The one by St Marks is great too... but sorta sketchy.

I love Dojo's, especially the location on West 4th. The service is great, and the food is even greater. It's a great spot to meet up with friends on a lazy afternoon to catch up with each other while enjoying a healthy meal.

I love the Japanese-infused menu. It has something for everyone while venturing beyond the typical American dishes. I highly recommend the French Toast (The Challah bread is delicious) or the Japanese breakfast.

The service has always been good, and staff friendly. Not to mention, the food is reasonably priced, keeping in mind that it's in the NYU area.

PROS: Price, Food, Location
CONS: None

Along with everyone else, I've been going to Dojo's (West) for years. It was one of my first vegetarian havens, and it was also mighty cheap (depending on the order). My favorites are the yakisoba vegetable (with tofu added in) and the hijiki tofu salad. Sometimes the wait staff is nice, sometimes it ain't; but it's always pretty low-key, and the food comes quickly.

An excellent place to go for cheap food, relatively little wait, and decent service. The food varies in quality and "tastiness", but not the place to go if your feeling especially particular anyway. Check it out sometime if you are looking for quick, cheap eats, and an interesting and wide ranging menu.

if you're a vegetarian, or just enjoy the occassional tasty healty meal, this is the place to go. Their service is really slow, but it's a small price to pay (literally). You can get a meal that will fill you up for around $6, and they have a nice selection of japanese dishes on their menu. Great village location, and amazing tahini dressing.

I go to this Dojo's all the time. For the price you pay, you cant get any better. The food is good (not great), and you pay about $6 a plate (that's about the same as a MCDonalds value meal). The appetizers are crazy cheap too, ranging from $2-$5. I always get the dojo dip with pita bread (tofu), and its like $3, and can serve 2 people. Definitely check it out if you want cheap good food. It gets pretty crowded and the service is not so great, but its still a great deal

I went to DoJos after walking around for an hour in the freezing cold shopping with a friend. We ordered the turkey club and veggie burger and calamari to start. The calamari was served with what looked like a mayo and thousand island greasy mix--ick. The other two dishes were so so. Nothing to write home about. But the waitress was so not friendly and in such a rush to get us out of there even though the place was more than half empty! She smacked the bill down before i had a chance to ask for dessert!

There is nothing special about Dojo West. The food is bland if not a little too salty (and I am a self proclaimed salt addict). The service is so-so, the quality of ingredients mediochre, and the prices low. This confluence of factors allows one to consume fairly uninspired "fusion" food at low cost. I eat at Dojo West because I am a poor college student. Maybe that is why it is located near NYU. Note that it is a CASH ONLY establishment.

I have been going to Dojo's for years. The dish I have been getting is the Hajiki Tofu Dinner, a plump, crispy patty filled with tofu and seaweed, served with rice and salad. The carrot tahini dressing is amazing! you can even buy it by the pint. I did. The Dojo Dip sandwich is great, as well as the cold sesame noodles. The home fries are fried potato wedges, a perfect side for $1!!!!! Ignore the NYU film students and enjoy.

Good place to pretend you're eating healthy--they've got some pretty good brown rice. I too was not impressed by the plate of what they were calling 'chicken'. It is very reasonably priced, though--possibly worth giving it another go.

When a meal ends with a pile of chicken gristle, you know it's going to be a tough night. Such is the sad state of Do-jo. At Do-jo, standard American and Japanese cuisine collide and die. The food is saltier than a sailor, and as noted above, the chicken demands serious attention, unless you like crunchy fat.

It seems like a decent place to have a pitcher of beer, unless it is chicken beer.

My kids have occasionally visited Dojo when they needed to grab a quick and inexpensive bite, so when we were all in the city today, I decided to try it. What a mistake. No wonder it is so economical - they wouldnt have the nerve to charge a penny more. The chumus was horrid, brown rice dry, chicken cutlet sandwich was hardly edible. Service was indifferent. We asked for water 3 times before they gave it to us, and even the fountain soda was flat. The only redeeming quality was the carrot/tahini salad dressing - other than that - thumbs down. Oh, and the ladies room was FILTHY.

The soy burger dinner is the best deal in town -- brown rice, a salad with sprouts and the BEST ginger dressing and a soyburger patty (which tastes like nothing else I've ever experienced) for $3.75!!! It's totally filling, mostly healthy and very delicious for less then 2 slices of pizza. Incredible!

It's cheap and everyone eats here upon first moving to New York. That said, it's often less than clean and more than claustrophobic and the food quality varies, though on good days, it's quite respectable. This location tends to attract NYUers -- Dojo East is not better, but funkier and more fun.
