There is so much more to Butter than the scene. Yes - everyone knows that it is still a hip place to be, but come and taste for yourself. With amazing decor, spectacular new american cuisine and a knowledgable staff, it is deserving of the hype! It's not hard to believe that butter has been around as long as it has. With a classy clientelle and food that deserves the attention, Butter is smooth. Do yourself a favor, come see what it's all about.

In Short
Trendy restaurants are lucky if their "it" factor lasts a full year, but Butter has managed to keep the Blackberries of the velvet rope crowd buzzing since 2002. Much of this has to do with the still fresh, space-age forest design--the arched upstairs with its illuminated tree mural and the downstairs with its birch-lined walls. The New American menu, featuring dishes like caviar and potato salad, Hudson Valley duck breast and Montauk Point striped bass "au poivre," is merely icing on the debutante cake.

Key Points

  • Spectacular Cuisine
  • Hip Bar Scene
  • Great Atmosphere

The Inside Scoop

  1. Where to Sit - The upstairs decor is a bit more dramatic, though the downstairs offers a loungier scene, and a DJ plays after 10pm on weekends.
  2. Bar Menu - More casual fare like crab cakes and Kobe beef empanadas comprise the bar menu.
  3. Prix Fixe Menu - A five-course tasting menu costs $95 (or $140 with wine pairings).
  4. What to Drink - A $32 bottle of Gruner Veltliner complements the lighter New American fare well.

After a string of trendy new restaurant/lounges raised my hopes only to quickly deflate them (i.e., Smith, Suba, Chateau and Industry) Butter is finally the real deal we have all been waiting for. A great scene, fantastic food and friendly service. The street-level non-smoking room offers a breath of fresh air (smoking is allowed downstairs), and the room is gorgeous, with raised ceilings and a huge white stainedglass window providing an ethereal soft-sunlight ambience (even at midnight). Noone will get away with wearing all-black here. We arrived 30 minutes late, but were seated promptly by a smiling, friendly (and beautiful) hostess. When our food arrived a barely-noticeable 5-minutes late, we were given a free round of drinks and dessert -- such desire to please is unknown in NYC hospitality. Black-olive seared tuna w/ lemon risotto was memorable, I can't find anything to complain about -- even the bathrooms were immaculate.

Pros: beautiful, unique roo, late night dining, no-smoking upstairs

I really liked this restaurant. The entrance is a bit hidden from the street, though I was informed that it is not yet complete. I love the decor of this restaurant as well. Unfortunately, the high ceilings and bare walls make for a very noisy dining experience. A big plus is no smoking in the dining room.

I really enjoyed the service and food was excellent. Our server was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. I expected a bit more pretentious staff from a restaurant that only hires gorgeous people.

I thought the food was excellent!! Definitely not a place to eat if you're a vegetarian. They serve up a killer dessert with raspberries and fromage blanc. Another plus, they serve food until 4am.

The birch room located downstairs is more of a bar lounge area. More cozy but have to talk over the loud music.

I highly recommend this restaurant.

Pros: Good Food, Serve Food Late, Good Service

Cons: Noisy
