I took a few of my friends to Republic and we had a great time. Reservations aren't taken, which turned out to be ok because the bartenders whip up the best drinks and FAST! Definitely get a picher - it so worth it! Our host was also

I have been coming to this noodle house in Union Square for years. Although there can be a wait at times (does not take reservations), I can generally get in and out of this restaurant fairly quick. It's great for lunch time and usually

BEWARE OF PAUL!

The guy lackadaisically standing at the hosting stand is rude, discourteous, obscene and offensive. Based on this one person alone, I will never eat here again. We asked for a copy of a past receipt for expenses because my boss lost his bag, and the lady on the phone told me that it would be no problem- we can get you a few receipts. A week later, both my intern and myself called, and Paul rudely told us he was only filling the first half of the request- that my "idiot" boss should stop losing receipts and that he was just too busy and important to help us further. When I asked if he could do me this one favor once more, he proceeded to patronize me by telling me he couldn't dumb it down any further- NO. Instead, he stood talking at the counter (extremely busy of course) and this man is NOT TO BE TRUSTED. Lord knows what he does with the food. He was extremely rude to me and my intern so I made a personal appearance and SMILED as he said no. Do not eat here if you're looking to have a nice relaxing dinner. Go down the block to blue water grill instead. At least their snobbery is comparable to their pricing.

My 2.5 year old is allergic to seaood. The restaurant was empty and we asked them to leave out the fish sauce. The manager told me that I should not eat there since they will not make any changes....incl just leaving out the sauce. Very rude and obnoxious. Totally oblivious to how to deal with customers. Will definitely not go back and will tell all my friend to avoid. Much better restaurants in the area in the same price range.

Pros: Empty Restaurant

Cons: Terrible Service...maybe that is why they are empty

Let's be reasonable, you don't come to Republic to have a nice quiet romantic dinner. You come here for the cheap and easy food with a group of friends. This place is loud any time of day. The service is quick and I've never had an issue like some other reviewers.
The calamari are ok, but a little on the oily side. The dumplings are a bit below your standrad dim sum. But what does stand out is their noodle broths which are gigantic in portions and very tasty. I particularly enjoy the salmon noodle soup - with plenty of fresh salmon pieces in lightly spiced coconut broth. You can't beat the price either.

JUST AWFULL.

Weak drinks in little glasses,
a condescending staff,
And everybody was around the corner
at Rosa Mexicana anyways.
May have a cinco de mayo refund por favor?

Walking into Republic at 5PM on a hot Sunday, all I wanted to do is get some icy cold drinks and some food in my tummy.

I went for the coconut lime cooler. It definitely helped me cool down. It is very sweet and tarty.

I ordered glass noodles for my entree and it was huge. The whole plate was full of glass noodles, chicken, and vegetable. I was really hungry but I barely finished it.

I am curious to come back now for other dishes!

my husband and out of town guests went in on a saturday night. the waitress misunderstood part of the order so when it came we asked to return it for what we ordered,. she said she would but we would not get it off the bill. we asked for the manager who INSISTED that this is a waste of food and we would have to pay for it! can you imagine. i thought for a minute that we were on a prank show bc never in a ny restaurant have i witnessed such an arrogant attitude from a manager about a $15 dish where his staff had clearly made an error. Let me preface this with the fact that we eat there all the time and have been ordering delivery from there consistently since 2002. That's a 7 year customer that poor management just alienated. I'm going back to get the manager's name tomorrow so i can report him to corporate. i''m just appalled.

Go at 8pm, and the whole world is there, all dresed in hipster black. Great place to hang with friends, very reasonable food (esp for Union Sq) and great jugs of drinks. Been there many times, never disappointed.

Pros: lychee martinis. Need I say more

Cons: Can get very noisy

.

Had the duck curry noodles -- a heaping portion, but unfortunatlely, it was very oily, and nothing special. I've had better meals at Spice for the same price. the food definitely felt heavier than how i'd imagined it when i decided to order it.

The host this afternoon wasn't exactly helpful, and the server was very slow and gave me the check a moment after giving me my entree... Not exactly rude, but definitely lacking a little tact.

Pros: bustling, located just off of union square

Cons: average food... average service

Republic is a Asian fusion restaurant- meaning don't expect traditional Chinese food. If you want that, then go to Chinatown. Be warned: drink refills are NOT free ; and you're charged a lot for sodas in small glasses. The spicy beef broth noodle soup is a favorite of mine. If you do not like cilantro, warn your waiter. Service tends to be spotty for my visits: prime time hours, wait staff are pretty busy and don't pay enough attention to you. I've taken several friends here and they leave pretty happy with the dishes. I would encourage the management to work on waiter service and walk around asking customers about their experiences, it *definitely* needs improvement.

Cons: Too loud (please add something to the walls), wait staff not too attentive.

Earlier today i had my first experience at Republic. Let me tell you that it was probably the worst experience i have ever had in a food establishment..... EVER.

I was served the worst bowel of wonton soup ever, not to mention the most revolting green tea on earth. But i think that the most interesting aspect of the visit wasn't the food it was the service. Our waiter never returned to the table to see if everything was ok, or to offer refills, or anything like that. The host, when approached, was a smart a** and the manager never came to the table to fix anything or apologize. I come from a food background and i would have to say that this whole incident was miss handled from the beginning.

Ive been to republic roughly 2-trillion times - its cheap as hell and always hits the spot - Try the grilled beef - watercress salad - spicy beef soup - chicken lime soup - ive tried pretty much everything but those are my favs -

Summertime at republic is the best because they have outdoor seating - great people watching around the park and a nice place to sit and read while you chow down. Indoor seating involves you sitting down at cafeteria style tables with strangers - it isnt great but its not a deal breaker - All this talk about Republic is making me want some - hmmm....think i may head over there now and pick something up...holllerrrrrrr

We just ate here for my wife's birthday. A few hours later my wife got horrifically sick from the food. Not only was her birthday ruined but when I called to speak to the manager he was shady. He wouldn't even tell me his name. Rather than apologizing he claimed that it wasn't their fault because it hadn't been a full 6 hours since we ate there. (Which is untrue, some bacteria can attack you within an hour.)

I have a feeling that we aren't the only one's to have been affected by tainted food recently.

I will never go here again, and I don't recommend you do either. It's not worth the trouble.

I am consistently disappointed with this restaurant. People love it and I don't know why. The sauces are watered down and soupy although fresh tasting. There are so many other restaurants near Union Square...check one out.

This place is the PERFECT casual dining spot. Everything on the menu is relatively inexpensive, but the quality is fantastic, and the portions are always huge. Where else in NYC can you order a watercress salad that's actually big enough to be a meal (okay, well, depending on how hungry you are...), for $4? You pay $4 for a bowl of rice at some restaurants! This is a great summer restaurant, especially if you sit outside. I recommend their Frozen Lychee martini (but be warned, it's thick enough to be a smoothie) and for dessert, the Black Sesame ice cream.

I personally was put off by the whole fusion thing. my vegetable red curry soup was too weird. mix of indian/thai/chinese. really odd. the starters we ordered were the seafood wontons which were oily but okay to taste. the fried tofu was just average. mango-papaya salad was nice. we also got a mixed fried rice which was average. overall, this place is okay for those who like the whole mix-match fusion thing. I did not like it and I did not find the food to be all that great.

Reasonably priced, delicious food, excellent specialty cocktails (lychee martini is excellent as is the bl ood organe martini) and it is a cool atmosphere. Has a very distinct smell that could be off-putting to some.

I was satisfied with my meal. The menu was interesting, but not complicated. The food was very reasonably priced, and of better than average quality. This place wasn't too edgy or trendy, but it never promised to be. The decor was actually pretty interesting. The communal tables in the hall-type dining room are kind of fun. I would return the next time I am in the area and am looking for a quick, cheap, quality meal.

The thing I like about Republic is it ability to produce a quality meal in a friendly and efficient manner. Yes, I know the dining environment can be loud at times and a bit overwhelming, but I expect it of this busy Union Square Restaurant. How could you not seeing the restaurant's massive size and location? I usually sit at the counter (on a couple of occasions at a table) and have almost always had a friendly and competent waiter.
The reason I recommend Republic to people is it's continuous deliverance of the product is promises; quick meals, friendly & skilled staff and a convenient location.

I must agree with the previous diner's review. I have been to Republic several times, to keep "giving it a shot" but always leave un-impressed by the food and just annoyed by the service. But tonight was the worst, when the hostesses would not seat us (table of 3) since the kitchen was 20 minutes from closing (it wasn't even 10pm). When she finally said we could walk back ourselves and see if there were tables open in the back (which I image should've been her job as the hostess...), we were not allowed to sit at any of the 10 open tables, already fully set for service, but instead were told we had to cram into a packed table, which if the restaurant was busy I could understand, but it was just unneccessary with so many open tables available! The staff was completely rude and didn't even pretend to be accomodating. I've learned my lesson -- will NOT go back.

.

I have given this place a number of chances because I live in the area and it's convenient, but each and every time it's always been mediocre at best. However, after my experience there tonight (my boyfriend wanted to give it another go), I REFUSE to ever set foot in Republic again. I ordered my usual pad thai (my favorite Thai dish that I get pretty much at any Thai restaurant I go to) and when I was eating it, I wondered why my mouth was burning... it was so spicy! When is pad thai meant to be SPICY?
I called the waitress over and she told me she would ask the kitchen what happened. She then comes back and informs me that the dish had "chili flakes" thrown in.
Now what restaurant puts chili flakes in PAD THAI?
When I asked that she said, "Sometimes the chefs are inconsistent."
(That has to be true because I've had that dish at Republic before)
She quickly dropped a menu in front of me and asked me what else I wanted or if I was done with the food. I didn't want anything else and the restaurant was near closing time, but I expected she would take it off the bill. I held onto it to try for a few remaining bites.
She didn't take it off the bill.
And when the manager asked if I wanted my meal wrapped and I said no (it was barely eaten) he didn't say anything, so I added, "It was horrible," and he just smiled.
This place is just overly pretentious and the fact that the normal nature of these dishes has to be altered shows that (a) this place is incapable of making a traditional Thai dish that tastes good and (b)they want to be "edgy" and "different" but instead ruin perfectly good staple Thai dishes.
A complete waste of money!

My boyfriend and I were very excited to try Republic -- it's a cute restaurant with a great decor. We ordered food which came promptly, but there was a live WORM in my boyfriend's pad thai. The others sitting at our table (Republic is cafeteria style seating) asked for their checks as well seeing the slimy, dark creature crawling on top of an egg-noodle. Thoroughly disgusted, we gave the food back to the server and asked for the check. The waiter took about 10 minutes to give us the check, although only about 10 seconds to clear the pad thai w/ worm meal off our table. When my boyfriend questioned a charge, he rudely motioned to speak w/ the manager. The female manager actually seemed upset when he said we shouldn't pay for my meal either (since I had not eaten a bite). She actually seemed annoyed that we would ask her and begrudgingly didn't make us pay for our food -- AND she tried to make excuses for the fact that there was a worm in the food!!

We expected much better customer service, and real, fully cooked food. Last time I checked, McDonalds (on the corner of the block) had better quality control in their kitchen and nicer staff. Plenty of other great restaurants to go to rather than go back to this insect-infested one!!

A Union Square institution, this is a good place for a quick casual eat or for delivery. I order their food a lot, but there are two shortfalls. First, eating in canteen style tables in one of the noisiest places I?ve been too is not everybody?s idea of fun. Second, most things on the menu are not great, they are just OK. I love just one thing on the menu ? the grilled marinated salmon is amazing, just can?t get enough of it. Everything else, its OK but not amazing. If you?ve ever been to Wagamama in London which is now opening branches across the US, this is the closest you?ll get to it until they open a location in NYC?

I love just one thing on the menu ? the grilled marinated salmon is amazing, just can?t get enough of it. Everything else, its OK but not amazing. If you?ve ever been to Wagamama in London which is now opening branches across the US, this is the closest you?ll get to it until they open a location in NYC?

Delicious food. Great prices. I loved the sushi sashimi salad and the coconut shrimp appetizer. The pad thai wasn't good. I sent it back. They are understaffed there, and it is very crowded. It is not a place to go if you want privacy at your table. Overall, this is a good place.

I have been to Republic numerous times and was aware of the communal seating arrangement...today, I arrived with my fiance for lunch and we were asked to follow the hostess to the center of a communal table. Although, we noticed that there was an empty table, where we could have sat alone. We asked for this table and the hostess RUDELY rolled her eyes and said NO. We repeated that we wanted to sit at a different table and once again she repeated NO with an attitude. My fiance and I eat out a lot and I have NEVER been treated so horribly by a hostess. I will now never step foot into Republic again and I would advise the management to teach their hostes some manners.

Pros: The fast food service once seated

Cons: The hostess to the main dining area.

The food is very bland and the service is very mediocre. The servers who are there seem to do a good job but they are grossly understaffed. So they repeatedly close huge sections of the restaurant. But they still try to pack the place in. We had 7 people sitting next to us in a space built for 4. On asking the manager why they couldn't be seated at one of the many many empty tables, she explained their lack of staff and said, "really, the food isnt great, so the only reason we are stay business is because we are on union square." Not worth going to. Plenty of other places on union square.

While I do think one can make a much worse choice for Thai food, Republic is not the best. The Pad Thai is slightly bland, and other dishes just do not compare to other similarly priced Thai restaurants.

The service is fast and the food is great. The restauraunt has a very communal feel. You share your table with other parties but you are never cramped. The prices are perfect and a dinner for two with appetizers was 40 bucks!!!. I loved it Would come back again. Try the Grilled Calimari and the Frid Wontons

I thought that with a very unique decor and environment that this place would be amazing. Their location is convenient but their food is no better than any other thai place. You pay for their rent basically. Also the service there is less than mediocre. Furthermore I called to make a reservation. Someone took it and then later when I got there they said that making a reservation doesn't make a difference-you wait behind the other people who got there-so there really was NO POINT in making a reservation because you still end up waiting 45 minutes for a table.

This is a noodle shop. There's nothing on the menu over $10 bucks. With that in mind, YES it's loud and YES the staff is quick/abrupt but it's CHEAP! Most of the food there is good. Congratulations to Republic for making fast food seem more glamorous. If you want a fine dining experience go somewhere else!

If you want mediocre food and bitchy waitresses, then you're in the right place. The only reason why this place is still in business is because of its location. Sure, Republic put some thought into their lighting scheme and decor, but they clearly forgot to train their servers in manners. I went here with my boyfriend and will NEVER go back. We were both really in the mood for Asian soup & had already been to Zen Palate that week, so we opted for somewhere different. My BF is vegetarian and ordered the veggie soup. The waitress said, "It's a bland soup." Okay, fine... no problem, right? Well, in their terms, bland means crappy vegetables floating in hot water - no joke! My BF complained and the waitress came back w. an attitude from hell. "I told you it was bland." Well, the conversation went on and I asked for the manager. And I thought the waitress was rude...The manager couldn't have been more distasteful. She admitted that no one likes the soup, but we had to pay for it anyway since the waitress explained that it was "bland." I asked, "So why is it on the menu if no one likes it?" She replied, "I don't know. Some people do." And these things weren't said politely - she was practically bitching us out. We paid the bill and walked out, mad and hungry. In all of the fine and not-so-fine dining I've had in my life, this experience trumps any previous bad service. If you're into pretentious people for bargain prices, look no further. I wish we had stayed home and ordered take-out Thai - or better yet, went back to Zen Palate.

When I'm in the area and just want simple yummy noodles, i come here. The atmosphere in the restaurant is noisy given the all around concrete atmosphere. Be prepared to share a table since they will seat multiple paties together since seating is on benches. Not a big deal unless you're trying to have a private conversation, but then again you wouldn't do it here anyhow. The drinks are good, but pricey compared to the noodle dishes. I always order the steamed vegetable dumplings and glass noodles. I've also had a beef/pork dish served over black rice, but I don't know if they have it anymore. It was very flavorful. the only thing I've had there that I didn't like was the watercress salad. It was just too bitter for me.

my friends and i were looking for a nice place to have a drink on a friday night in union square, we ended up at republic this thai place right next to mc donalds. the drinks were amazing, the food came fast and the staff looked like they were having a good time. our waiter even told us a really cool place were we could go dancing afterwards. overall a really good experience would not recomend for a romantic date, its too loud.

So my first experience at Republic was definitely the worst and last one I will ever have at this restaurant. My roommate and I strolled in on a monday night (march 5, 2007! yes this is a recent event!!). We were seated in the back corner as soon as we arrived and things were going well....our waitress was super nice and the water boy was very quick to fill up our glasses. I ordered a bowl of Chicken Pad Thai and I was enjoying the my first few bites only to LOOK DOWN AND SEE A LIVE C@CKROACH CRAWLING AROUND IN MY FOOD! So of course I had to let out a shriek as I was uber disgusted and in a state of shock. AFter a few mins of sitting there staring at this bowl of food the waitress came over and quickly cleared the table...she apologized ONCE and took our food and no one came back to see if things were ok, if there was anything else we wanted (not that i would order there again but its courtesy...i think) or there was anything they could do to make our experience there a little better. So, my roommate and I just bundled up to leave and although all the waiters and waitresses were standing at the front counter NO ONE SAID ANYTHING AND WE JUST LEFT. Basically they were trying to get us out of there as fast as they could so as not to ruin their business since there were other ppl there eating at the time. Now that I think about it..the cc@kroach did not bother me as much as the staff did at this place....they were rude and acted as if having a c@ckroach in their food is a daily activity. For those of you looking to eat there just be careful since there was one c@ckroach in my food....we all know there is a whole colony of them floating around!!!!

As I am allergic to spicy food, they cannot switch to other dishes for me as all the food are pre-made already. After complaining to their manager, Cynthia Fuertes, she said she didn't find the food spicy at all and if I felt spicy, then all the dishes that they served are spicy except the chicken soup noodle.
If you like spicy and non-fresh unhealthy food, this is a good place to go. There are many other good asian food restaurants in town that serve fresh and nice asian food and will not use spices to cover its unfreshness of food.

I've been going to this place for over 9 years ( I think maybe 8) but anyway the food is fantatic.
It's noisy (very) but you eat and get out. If the noise is not for you order take out!

When I am out shopping in NYC Republic is almost always my lunch stop because I am usually alone, I can sit at the bar and read as I eat, hang my bag on the bar hook and enjoy a really delicious and light lunch. I like the seaweed salad a lot. It has a unique flavor with julienned cucumber in it and is always a nice refreshing starter. I usually order the ginger tea, and I love the duck soup! I think it's great they offer hot sauce too, and while the service isn't great, though it's fine if you sit up at the bar and think of it as a quick, better and flavorful option to fast food or a diner.

I went once with my boyfriend and he liked the food but hated the waiter because he was very smug when he asked for a fork. I can't see myself going there with a crowd, but you'll always see me there lunching alone with my shopping bags, replenishing my energy! Love this place.

Republics atmosphere is about as conducive to dining as the subway at rush hour is to taking a nap. The food is a notch or two below franchises like Lemongrass. Republics Pad Thai, loved by the New York Magazine food critic, was mediocre but it IS cheap. However cheap isnt enough to make the atmosphere any more tolerable. Its loud, somebody growls on the P.A. constantly, the benches hurt your bum and they put the next party AT your table with you so you cant even shout over the constant din without helping to ruin someone elses already below average dining experience. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Or better yet get take-out from Lemongrass and eat it on the 4 train. You won't know the difference.

The oncoming frigid weather makes me crave one thing only: a hot bowl of soupy noodles at Republic in Union Square. The restaurant is enormous, by New York standards, but not austere in the least: ultra low lighting, giant black-and-white posters of people all over the world eating (and sometimes wearing) noodles, and tons of simultaneous conversation. The dining area is staged like a huge communal cafeteria with foot-thick wooden tables and benches that patrons share with other patrons. (If you can, try to snag two end seats facing each other so you needn't worry about elbowing more than one person each while scooping and sipping your delicious broths.) The last time I was there, I had a steamy bowl of spicy coconut chicken broth with rice noodles, which completely cleared out my sinuses by the end of the meal!

Had dinner here with a group of 11 on a Friday night. It was so loud that at least half of us had to repeat our orders. The left side of this page says "Special Features: Romantic". I would beg to differ. Service overall was good as we got our drinks, appetizers, and entrees fairly quickly. Try the Hot Sake as opposed to the Cold Sakes. As for the food, I'd say it's average. I am only recommending this restaurant on the basis that it's a good place for groups that aren't looking to spend too much money. Each of us had at least a drink, appetizer, and entree which came out to $30pp including tax and tip.

Republic used to be so good - the food was flavorful, reliable, and quick. Now it's...just quick. Curried duck noodles don't have that special flavor kick anymore. Pad thai is all sprouts, very little noodles or taste. The coconut shrimp is mediocre at best and the stuffed chicken is dull. Needless to say, I'm highly disappointed as this used to be such a dependable spot. Now it reminds me of an upscale fast-food restaurant - service is quick, half-hearted, and forgettable. There are plenty of restaurants to eat in this area - SKIP this one (at least, until the food regains its original caliber)!

Republic is consistently decent/good. You get what you know and you know what you get. The location can't be beat and the prices are good. My wife and I had an nice afternoon snack/early dinner of two noodle bowls, appetizer (Seafood Spring Rolls- mmmm) and a drink for under $30. The food was very good and though the selection hasn't changed in years, we got what we wanted, it was good and fast. The location is so convenient and fun, so all those naysayers need to remember why Republic is good, why they goto Republic and enjoy it for what it is. You want authentic Chinese, go downtown. You want authentic Japanese noodles goto a ramen shop. Get the picture?
