North Surgi-Center often feels to to explain the full details of the anesthesia. They encourage patients to have anesthesia with sedation. They inform patients that the purpose of the sedation, is so that you feel no pain. Oddly enough, there are no pain reducing drugs that are administered through the IV ( a local anesthetic agent is used). Instead, you are given hypnotic and amnesia inducing drugs. You are awake during the entire procedure and forget everything that happened. According to the NYS Health Dept, a patient can refuse sedation because sedation is not recognized as a pain killing agent. When I had visited my wife in the recovery (one half hour after the procedure), her short term memory was still affected. Her speech was slurred and it was like having a conversation with someone who had a stroke. I recently also had a procedure where I had sedation and I was wide wake and had no short term memory effects that my wife had experienced. I had a coloscopy at a different surgical center. I am glad that I did.I am a former pre-med student and I simply state that sedation is not necessary in some cases. A woman in Virginia had died from sedation while undergoing bunion surgery (look-up on the internet). Sedation has only one benifit and the benifit is not always for the patient; sometimes it is because the physicians do not want witnesses to their mistakes. When I had shoulder surgery at North Shore University Hospital, I had a choice of anesthesia. My wife did not. North Shore Surgi-Center also has the patient makes the patient sign a consent form. The only problem with the consent form; is thst you leave all decisions up to the physicians or in this case the foot doctor. The health care proxy is nullified and voided by signing this statement. It gives the North Shore Surg-Center permission to have Non-medical personnel to observe the procedure. It does not identify the persons, who may or not be member of the Center. It allows for the Center to take videos, photos of the procedure without your implicit knowledge. It does not identify the anesthiologist involved in your care. Sterility of the IV is questionable. While waiting in the prep area with my wife; I had observed an anesthesiologist stepping on the ends of the IV tubes with his outsde sneakers. I had asked my wife's doctor why couldn't the procedure be done in the doctor's office (some bunion surgiers are). He stated because the Surgi-Center is more sterile. Remember the IV lines being stepped on. These IV lines are brought into the so-called sterile room with an host of bacteria on them. If the Nurse or anesthesioglist touches the IV ends and then touch the wound area of the patient; you can have a serious infection. Most antibiotics are penicillin related and only provide protection against specific organisms. You have pretty nasty soil organisms. One even causes tetanus and gangerine. Because North Shore is so non-sterile; one can get septemia or MRSA (this orgainism was created by the health care setting) I use to work in sterile room of a pharmaceutical company. I know what sterile is and North Shore isn't.

North Shore Surgi-Center is more interested in protecting itself and making money. The consent form that they make you sign; completely does away with the Patient Bill of Rights and voids any health care proxy that the patient had filled out. Recently my wife had bunion surgery . The consent form allows for any person not involved in your operation ; to observe all facets of the operation. It even allows for the taking of videos and photographs for educational purposes. Well after the fact, I conatcted the NYS Health Dept and they had stated that my wife could cross out any items on the consent form that she did not agree with.
It also allows that the physicians make decisions without the knowledge of the patient or his/her health care proxy.
In addition, they have all anesthetic procedures conducted with the use of sedation. Most people think that they are totally sleep and that the purpose of the sedation is to allevaite pain. The truth is that you are awake and that hypnotic and amnesic medications have been introduced into your body.
