Reviews for Pearl Art & Craft Supply

Ratings_icons Pearl Art & Craft Supply is great minus some of the staff

tina f.

I found this store years back and loved the low key layout, huge, a bit intimidating but once you find your way it seems more homey. i love the selections, but i am disappointed in some of the staffs attitudes. the younger ones seem to be angry about the presence of any customers, or i find that to be true on the paint/ fine arts floor. i am somewhat turned off by their lack of concern for acknowledging a customer waiting at a register. but the older staff members there are very real and very inspiring. i am not past the age of 24, so i am happy to be assisted by these seasoned patient artists. they have a lot of insight and are always cracking jokes. :) would def. recommend if you are an art student who would love a discount on kick butt products.

I've been going to Pearl Paint for about 5 years. It has a great assortment of supplies in one place, and the student/teacher discount is great (it comes out to be around what tax would cost you).

Lately, I've been disappointed in the staff. Most of them are helpful and pleasant, especially on the paint floor, and the top architecture/drafting floor. I find them to be the most helpful, informative people. However, the last few times I went onto the paper floor, there was an a**hole cashier. I wanted to ask him what his problem is because I didn't do or say anything to him - he just sits there, sulks, and seems pretty annoyed and p*ssed-off that he has to be there at all. Get a new job, man. When I saw that he was working again the second time, I thought to myself, "Damn, I have to deal with him again?!" I started going to Blick and Utrecht more often.

Also, the floor manager on the printmaking floor is kind of an a**hole. He's so snooty and treats the staff under him like sh*t. Again, another reason just to go to another store for my supplies.

So yes, it's a great, big art store with some fabulous people. They just need to get rid of the few a**holes. I'll continue to shop and Pearl Paint but I won't be making any more special trips unless I need something from the paint or architecture/drafting floor.

This is the greatest art supply store. As a college student I worked here part time they have supplies for every hobby. If they don't have it they are willing to order it they have about 3 locations.

Great selection. Great Prices. Great if you have extra time to waste.
Definitely not great for someone who prefers smaller stores. It can become frustrating shopping at a store with 4 flights of great supplies..Not for me, But Great STORE!!

Ratings_icons I love this store

It's like a huge candy store for art supplies. Whatever you can think of they have, from oragami paper the size of a pencil eraser to leather portfolios the size of a tiny building. I used to come here with my dad as a treat after school and I still love coming here. Granted, the prices are a tad on the high end, but where else could you find so much stuff for your hobby?! Oh yeah, don't ride the elevator. It's creepy and everytime I'm in there I fear for my life. Take the stairs, they aren't that hard to climb.

They have everything under the sun, and are very reasonably priced. This place is very busy on the weekend, so dont expect you will get detailed help. Go during weekdays, and the staff will be a lot more helpful. Its also a great store for getting decorating ideas. The only problem is that it is hard to find a cab afterwards, when you need to haul everything back.

PROS: helpful staff
CONS: Hard to find cab

Ratings_icons Whenever in NYC, Pearl Paint is a must

Liza M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,369

Living about 2 hours outside the city, we only make the trip a few times a year - not as often as we'd like. But we have amassed a set of stores and restaurants have started to become "must stops" while there, and Pearl Paint is one of those.

My husband is a scenic designer, and we spend a lot on art supplies. We buy some things locally, order some online, and then there are those small pricey items that are categorized "wait until the next trip to Pearl"

Make it a "must stop" for yourself and see the great selection, prices, and expertise.

Pearl Paint is a great place for hard to find art suplies - they have everything you can imagine in there. The store is huge, there are a few floors just filled with merchandise. Ive spent so much time in there just looking through all the items they have. The prices range from average to a little high, but its still worth a look.

You name it and they have it. Its the ultimate supply store. The prices are good and there are helpful employees to help you find things. They have all types of paints, brushes, paper, color pencils, and more. They are conviently located on Canal Street. It is a crowded street and there a lot of shoppers. Pearl Paint is your number supply store. Their selection is huge. Highly recommended for artist and normal people alike.

The only issue i might have with this store is the lack of organization and the staff. If you know your way around or can manage on your own, they have everything you could ever need, or someone in the store will tell you where to get it. I highly recommend...very good for all the art supplies you could need.

Anything you can dream of that has to do with arts and craft supplies can be found here in this very store! It's very well organized with their boards directing you to what you want at which level. Some things may be expensive, but that's only because it is made out of excellent quality. There are also always things on discount. It's a neverending supply. Also check out the craft centers through the back doors and across the street. You can find knitting materials, beads, styrofoam balls, etc. A must see!

Ratings_icons Best art supply store in New York

Vincent P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,185

Pearl Paint is the number one art supply store in New York. Five stories of everything you need to make a variety of art. The staff knows there business and you can find everything from portfolios, stretchers, brushes, paints and sketchbooks. Even if you just dabble in art you shouldn't miss this place.

PROS: The best
CONS: should be open 24/7

Ratings_icons my favorite art supply store

Jane L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,706

The best prices and the best selection in art supplies, in my opinion. I once bought 11 paint brushes and two small tubes of oil paint for $23. They have a great clearance brush section. There are 4 levels, I think. Great for experienced artists, might be a little confusing for those just starting out, as the place is so big and the sales people are hard to find.

Ratings_icons Excellent source for art supplies

Sheryln S. | insider Insider | Rank: 29,152

I need to go get beads and plaster, and my ex roommate recommended the place ( she is an artist herself). Prices for most stuff are very well priced. If one is an art student or art teacher, you can get additional discounts. Huge selection for arts and craft supplies. The paints are cheap compared to other art supplies stores. Their merchandise is very well displayed, one can find items easily. Service is so so, you can get good advice if one asks the assistants.

I shop here all the time for my son. He's very much into painting and making things, and when I take him here, it's like letting a kid loose in a candy store. The prices aren't too expensive. I spend a lot of money but I walk out of there with a lot of stuff. The place is huge, so plan enough time to check everything out. The staff is very helpful. I plan to continue going to Pearl Paint for all our art supply needs.

Ratings_icons I LOVE this place!

Nancy K. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,170

I used to work on Varick Street, not far from Pearl Paint. I would go there on my lunch hour, but found that an hour wasn't enough time. I just loved looking around at all the goodies! They have so much more than paint--you name the hobby, they have the supplies you need--paint, colored sand, all kinds of wood, yarn, glues, all kinds of paper, the list goes on and on. It's a huge store, and it does get very crowded, so plan to go when you have more than a lunch hour to spare!

PROS: You can find all your arts and crafts supplies here, good prices
CONS: Gets crowded, not the best location

Ratings_icons Great for Nearly All Art Needs

A W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,755

More of an arts store than a crafts store, there is a large selection of markers, paints, canvases/pads, etc. (if you don't mind hiking up the stairs to get to the upper floors). The staff is pretty helpful; many of them are artists in some capacity. This store does not have a lot for crafts like knitting/needlework, jewelry making, etc. But I guess that's why it's not called "Pearl Knitting" or "Pearl Jewelry."

PROS: Large selection of art materials.
CONS: Smaller selection of crafts materials.
