I have gotten every pet I ever had from here. They've been in business since 1939..... really! Same family (you don't find that anymore these days). Shopping there to support small businesses is a good enough reason but there's more..... they genuinely love and care for every pet they sell. Classy place. Been going for 30 years and intend to for all my pet needs.Love of my life was purchased here, he timely passed away and when I'm ready that's exactly where I am going. They never pressure you!!THANKS SO MUCH

We purchased two guinea pigs from them. We were told that we could bring them back at any time for nail clippings, free of charge, which is a huge money saver.

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. This is a long story.

They received, as a rescue, a Peruvian Guinea Pig. They are pretty hard to get. I was there two days after they got her. I told them I wanted her but they told me they were trying to breed her. I gave them my number and told them to call me. I wanted her.

I went back every couple of weeks for the next few months asking about her. They told me they were still trying to breed her. Finally, after three months, I went in to get pellets for our other guinea pigs and she was on the sales floor. I bought her and took her home that day. They tried to charge me extra because they had her for four months and she was a 'rare' guinea pig. I said I was there two days after she arrived and willing to take her home at that time. If they were that worried about her, they should have given her to me that day. So they sold her to me for the regular price.

Three weeks later, she was lethargic. I called the vet and got an appointment for the next day. She died on the way to the vet. As it turns out, guinea pigs should not get pregnant if they are over six months old. After that, their pelvic bones fuse and there is no way that the guinea pig can deliver naturally. A C-section is all but guaranteed and the vet told me that the mom piggie only has a 25% chance of surviving.

They had this poor guinea pig for over three months trying to get her pregnant. And she was full grown when they got her. You do the math.

They were completely irresponsible for trying to breed an adult size guinea pig. It was a death sentence. Then they sold her after they thought she couldn't have babies.

Try bringing a pet home to your children only to have it die three weeks later. My children are devastated. Then try to process the fact that the animal was pregnant, well past her child bearing age. And died with three fetuses in her belly. And there was nothing you could have done about it.

The worst part about this was, after I went in to tell them what happened, they gave me a store credit for a new guinea pig. And the manager tried to explain it away by saying that after six months, a guinea pig can't carry babies. Duh. I know that now. In fact, a quick google search will attest to that. So why were they trying to get her pregnant?

From start to finish, this was just wrong. On so many levels.

If you are thinking about getting a new pet, please consider adopting. From mice to hamsters to ferrets and chinchillas and cats and dogs, there are so many animals that need homes. All over Long Island. There is no need to buy one and support breeding.

There is a great animal rescue on Long Island for small animals. Google it. And please think about adopting. And frequent pet stores that don't sell animals from breeders. There are too many rescues who need homes.

This entire situation was the most unethical, greedy and uncaring cluster you-know-what from start to finish.

Long Island families have been sharing and making memories here since 1939..... REALLY! Same family same location. Every time I walk in it feels like I'm coming home. I absolutely love it.
I am clearly partial since I bought my wonderful son (dog) there 7 years ago and absolutely love him to bits. Truly a wonderful experience with really caring staff........... check it out!!!

the Best Pet Shop on Long Island. Does everyone know that they were voted BEST ON LONG ISLAND FOR 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 AND 2009. I think that is a statement for what this store does for the pets and the community. It is immaculate, the puppies are immaculate and so are all of the other animals is this store. The employees are great and Lauren really cares for all the puppies. I have never seen any one rude that works there.

Sick Animals Sold Here! Do not buy from these people if you are a true animal lover. Wanted to buy a puppy but met several people who have purchased from them and said they would never do it again they had sick dogs and spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills. Also too read their return policy which clearly states will not take back any animal under any circumstances so buyer beware!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the woman Lauren who works there is a rude and nasty female dog!

purchased a african grey parrot and a yellow lab. I have never seen such a carrying staff. They literally spent hours explaining the pros and cons of having a parrot and a puppy. The reason why you should consider getting a rescued pet or getting a pet from the shelters. They explained the long term commitment of being a responsible pet owner. I have never been in a pet shop that didn't try to pressure sell you. They are a caring and experienced business that has been here forever. They made sure I had care sheets and instructions for the care of my new pets. They are opened 7 days a week and always available for my questions. The store actually smells clean when you walk inside. Not like some other stores that your eyes burn from the odor. I strongly recomment that you go to Selmer's before you make your final decision of purchasing a pet.

This is a wonderful store to visit or shop. Their animals are healthy and kept in very clean housing. The staff and owner are very knowledgeable. They are very eager to answer all of your questions and stand behind their excellent reputation. I am the third generation of my family that live on Long Island and remember my grandparents shopping there. If you haven't been there it is a must see.

I've been going to selmers pet store since i was a kid (i'm now 47) i have never seen animals with open wounds or mistreated. i've bought everything from hamsters to birds from them and all were healthy and happy. They do not feed cheap food to the animals if you look you can see the bags they feed their puppy's from is a top rated natural puppy food. To other reviewers do not lie on these reviews and state only facts otherwise the integrity of this review page is compromised

This pet store is the cleanest, nicest one i've been to on the island. I am a frequent shopper and every time i go in there all the staff is very pleasant and the place is always neat and clean. I have gotten all of my animals and supplies there and is always someone that knows about each area. The puppy section is probably the best out of the whole store. Every time i go down there, there is always someone exercising them. I have family members and friends that have purchased puppies from them and they are all healthy and happy. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

I've done some investigating myself to find out more about how the puppies are treated and care for. Believe it or not they are given proper care with vet examinations etc. sometimes twice a week. The puppy food is actually an all natural brand, not the cheap puppy chow that some breeders use. I've even seen a girl walking the dogs and putting some of the bigger ones in the pen to play. Even though it's a pet store, before you judge check it out for yourself.

The animals are kept in such poor conditions, it is sad to see their lack of compassion.

Small Animals
Their small animals(gerbils, hamsters, mice), are sometimes injured and dying. I have personally bought sick and dying animals just to be able to get them to a vet. I have seen rodents with open wounds from fighting, eye infections, and respiratory infections.

Birds
The birds are kept in cramped conditions. These intelligent animals are given no toys to simulate their creative nature. They are fed cheap and nutionally lacking foods. I have seen many birds sick, and with overgrown beaks and growths from mites.

Puppies
Cute as buttons, but are kept in little cages and given no toys to play with. They also all seem to have diarrhea(even the older ones)., which may be a sign of parasites. I knew someone that bought a dog from them and it had parasites.

Staff
I wonder if they know anything about animals. I was told that a gerbil with a ripped open back(from fighting), was ok, and that gerbils do that all the time. I can't imagine that this staff care very much about the animals, since many sick/injured ones are overlooked.

Pet stores do not always get a good reputation as caring about the animals, but the least that can be done is providing proper care and a decent amount of compassion so that the animals do not suffer.

I went into selmers about a week ago and was disturbed to see that they neglect their birds. There were three parakeets that were clearly very ill, I will be sending this e-mail to the owner, in hopes that he will start to take care of the birds at his pet store. Its sad that the owner is a veterinarian and he doesn't even take care of his own animals!

This store is wonderful. I purchased two puppies that are healthy with great personalities. This store is the cleanest and most professional that I have ever been in. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful. They answered all of my questions and are reachable for any help that I have needed. The grooming department was just as good. This store is worth a trip to see. They have been there since 1939, they must be doing the right thing.

One stop shopping for all your pet needs. Huge selection of tropical fish, hampsters and birs as well as cats and dogs. Very knoledgeable staff.. Very nice exotic bird selection on top floor. They also have a vet on the premises as well as a groomer and training facility. Parking is in the rear of the store and is easily accessible from Jericho Turnpike.
