Food is amazing, but the service is lackluster at best here. Hope it improves, but until the management changes, I'll probably not come back. And it's such a shame because the food is amazing!

I come here at least once a week, so I think I owe a review. Both the food and the ambiance keep me coming back. Blue Ribbon looks, smells and tastes great with awesome service. I've never felt rushed even though it can get kind of busy. The chocolate bread pudding is one of the best things I've ever eaten... highly recommend!!

We finally went to Blue Ribbon Bakery. I had read so much hype about this place over the years. Maybe the Bromberg brothers are getting stretched too thin with their growing food empire? But whatever is going on, the place was a huge disappointment. The food was lackluster at best. The grilled catfish was overspiced and had weird thready things in it. The lamb was overdone and there wasn't much of it. But the worst was the service. Talk about a real bummer. Our waiter treated us like a big inconvenience despite our early dining hour and that the place was nearly empty when we sat down. I don't know, maybe we weren't hip or cool enough? Who knows, who cares. There were plenty of tourists filling the place by the time we left. So be forewarned. And remember that there are so many other places to try in NYC. Don't waste your money here unless you like grudging service provided by a self-absorbed waiter in a small, noisy space!

This is a really fun cozy place in the Village. The breads are fantastic but the blue ribbon food is what keeps bringing me back. The french toast may be the best thing I ever ate.

I've never left this place disappointed. Yesterday, as usual we had an extremely pleasant evening -- good service and excellent food. Their menu selections are exquisite. Duck confit yesterday was great. I love their combinations -- how flavors complement each other. Excellent atmosphere and decor. Looking forward to going back.

I love Blue Ribbon Bakery in the winter. The downstairs dining area is juxtaposed to the wood burning ovens of their bakery and the wine cellar gives it an old world charm. I highly recommend the fried chicken, the batter is light and the chicken is juicy. The chocolate bread pudding is a perfect ending to a decadent meal or the ice cream sundae which is equally naughty.

good restaurants in nyc are always busy. so is the case with blue ribbon bakery. formerly a bodega, it was converted to a bakery which, in addition to making bread, began to serve small plates. the last step of its conversion occurred circa 2003 when the retail component left in favor of a bar. serving several classics, including the BR fried chicken, one of the best parts about the place is its small plates. everything from pickled veggies and olives, to steak tartare and marrow, to caviar and smoked trout. i recommend the small plates for the tables in lieu of the full "meals". try 12 things instead of 2. you wont regret it. ask for the bacon bread - they dont bring it with the regular bread basket...but you want it.

Pros: corner location, bread, menu, blue ribbon wine bar across the street

Cons: nousy and busy, not intimate, not veyr kid friendly

What a high quality New York restaurant should be -- casual atmosphere, attentive but not obsequious service, lively but not posturing atmosphere, and excellent food. I say food rather than cuisine because the dishes are straightforward and lack pretension. This is the most thoroughly enjoyable dining experience in New York, suprising perhaps because of the omnipresence of the Blue Ribbon brand. Nothing on the menu has ever disappointed -- worth explicit mention is the fried chicken, french onion soup, lamb, and french toast. And of course the fresh baked bread, which arrives warm from baking rather than reheating. Although you can't go wrong with any of the bread options, the bacon/grilled onion and sesame deserve mention.

The food was mediocre with a small selection on the menu. The host had us wait even though we arrived prior to other patrons. Worst of all was our waiter. He had no idea what was on the menu and wa helped by fellow staffer. Definitely find another place for brunch.

Had something to eat there last night and in twenty years of eating out in New York I never experienced such bad service. The waiter that we got was in such a bad mood, he never introduce himself, just tossed the plates down in front of us. He never told us about any specials and to finish it off he dropped a fork on my wifes lap not once but twice without saying anything just a look as if to say oh well. I couldn't get out of there fast enought. My wife did convince me that maybe he was having a bad night so I might go back because the food was good even the cheeses which again the tall waiter with the beard just tossed on the table and walked away without any word about them.

My favorite way to cap off an evening is to go to Blue Ribbon Bakery around midnight or later - when there's not a wait - and get the Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding and cocktails. Sometimes we'll mix it up and get other desserts too, but mostly this is my staple. I've eaten dinner and brunch here as well - and it's always delicious, fun, great service. But I put my money on dessert and cocktails. Oh, and definitely take a trip downstairs - where you can smell the fresh baked bread!

just called for try to book a brunch for 20...it will be the brunch after my wedding...and this "nice" waiter after I told him the number of people simply replied: "we don't handle this kind of numbers" and just hanged on me.
Congratulations to this "little" person, never got a reply like that...I defenetely hope that this ignorant will be put out on the street asap. expecially because I've been there few times, and downstairs we were a party of more than 20, so I'm really disappointed

This place is our "old faithful". We go on friday nights after we are back in the city because they serve dinner until 2am! You almost ALWAYS have to wait for a table (even at 11pm) but we don't mind. The bread is fantastic and we love the chorizo and garlic shrimp appetizer and the steak frites are great comfort food. The chocolate chip bread pudding is my favorite dessert in all of NYC - probably! Cozy environment. Service is hitt or miss (as is the bartender) but its a great place to hang out, eat comfort food, drink wine - there's no 'scene' here (other than locals). Prices are on par with most NYC restaurants (except for the person who said they could get 'food' at McDonald's)

Great food and I would definitely recommend the breads and cookies to anyone that wants to taste something yummy. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

I've been going to this restaurant for the last few years, and I thought it was time to write a nice review for it. The waiters, waitresses and hosts manage to blend prompt and attentive service with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. I've enjoyed every dish I've tried at the restaurant, especially the pigeon, the catfish, and the chocolate chip bread pudding. The location is also nice and quiet, like a pocket of calm in this busy city.

I know that there are some long-time, successful restaurants that don't take reservations in NYC. That's fine. But why do some restaurants use that as an excuse to lie about how long the wait will take? I came here on a date, which is when you would particularly appreciate an accurate time estimate. I was told 40 minutes. After waiting for 1 hour and 10 minutes I asked the host for an estimate. He looked at me like I was annoying him, said 10-15 mins and then told me to sit at the bar. Not a word of apology was offered, even though a little courtesy would have gone a long way. It took us 1.5 hours to sit down and the host purposely (I think) sat us at the least desirable table next to a steel exit door just for "bothering" him. Restaurants owe the people who support their business accurate time estimates so they can plan their night accordingly, especially in the west village where there tons of great alternatives. The food was fine, but definitely not worth the wait or the attitude problem.

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner tonight and easily could have had a better meal at the McDonald's around the corner. I was so disappointed. We had the pork rilette - mediocre, but edible and the fried chicken and burger both of which should never have left the kitchen. My medium burger came out beyond well done which is just unexcusable, especially at nearly $15. The fried chicken - a whopping $25 - was bone dry and served with barely cooked collard greens. A burger and fried chicken - how could they mess up those two basic things so badly? The ended up taking my burger off the bill and giving us a dessert on the house - an awful banana split. I will never go back here and immediately tell everyone I know to go some place else.

This was a lucky walk-in for me. The wait staff is attentive and the food is prepared with fresh ingredients and well presented. Downstairs is the gem. However, I would recommend it for the fall and winter months. The cavernous exposed brick walls are dark and cozy offering a view of the kitchen that is the central focus intended to make a theatrical spectacle with roaring flames and diligent kitchen staff. This is a romantic spot for a wintery date. If dining with a group of four or more I would recommend making reservations, sitting upstairs, and ordering the smaller items sharing the individual taste treats.

Blue Ribbon Bakery is the perfect place for a date or for brunch. The downstairs overlooks the breadmaking and you'll notice a warm bread smell. You feel like you are in a country cabin with all of the exposed brick and 'cave like' entranceways. The upstairs is your typical NYC restaurant with not so typical food. THE WHOLE MENU IS GOOD. I've tried virtually half the menu and it is all great. The ravioli is amazing, so are the tongue, yellowfin, serrano ham sandwiches. The apps are good- drinks great. I highly recommend this place if you want to take someone on a date. I also highly recommend sitting downstairs if thats possible (large groups have a better shot at the coveted downstairs tables). Great place to take out of towners as well!

I ordered the SHRIMP & GARLIC CHORIZO and MUSHROOM RAVIOLI as an appetizer. Don't get it, it wasn't worth the money. For entree, I had the Filet Mignon and that was simply superb. The meat was tender, the potato latke was crunchy...it was amazing. The other stuff that we ordered, the hummus, the banana pudding, DONT GET IT. Only certain things are worth getting. If I were to go there again, I would just order the PROFITEROLES, three scoops of diff flavored ice cream wrapped in pastries and drizzled in chocolate---this was truly amazing. I'd forego the appetizers, none of them were good. Eat the free bread, it's one of the best parts of going to this restaurant.

I can vouch for almost every type of bread they sell, and it is all oh-so-very good. Believe me, I'm salivating right now just thinking about the irresistibly flaky crust and the heavenly aroma. Their bread must be coming from some heavenly source because my mouth had never before tasted something so great. Oh, their other goodies are yummy as well but if you don?t try the bread then your visit was in vain.

If you don't have any experience of restaurants you might, just, accept this miserable excuse of a place. The staff is surly, service is slow, the owner shouts orders to waiters across the place. The wine list has prices ranging from $33 (very very few choices) to $600 and more. The food is boring and the menu absurdly limited. Who, one wonders, would want to drink a $600 bottle of wine with any item on the food list. Give this place a miss.

Need I say more? My meat was actually over-done (I ordered medium rare and it came out to be close to well-done) but as I was telling my husband, the manager walked up to us and asked how our food was. His eyes went straight to my meat, quickly walked off to check our order slip and came back to apologize to us and offered to get another one. What service! I actually didn't mind it at all so told him that wasn't necessary. My meal was free and we even got free dessert on the house. What a classy gesture!

Went there for brunch last weekend with a group of 10. They have a really cool private room that would seat about 8-13 people I would guess. It is in the wine cellar and right by the acutal ovens, which is kind of neat. Our waiter was great and very attentive - I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a group brunch! Definitely make reservations if you have a group large enough to.

Everytime I go here I am never disappointed. I need to go more ofthen! Brunch, Lunch or Dinner it is always fantastic. The staff is amazing and super friendly. I couple of weeks ago we went to Supper in the east village and it was so bad that we got up and left and the only way to save the evening of horrible food was to go to Blue Ribbon Bakery and have at least one thing off the menu. If you don't like the food here you idea of fine dining is probably TGIF's and McDonald's. This place ROCKS!

I ordered a burger (medium), fries, and a glass of red wine. Glass of wine MIA. Meal came. I went to pick up one half of the burger, burger was so undercooked that the blood had seeped into the bun, the entire bottom of it soaked to where it could not be lifted. I lost my appetite immediately. Getting the attention of our server was impossible. Still no wine. Server arrived and said they wanted to give us a complimentary dessert. Great! We waited. No dessert. Check came. Charged for the wine. Told the waiter, he responded 'oh'. Still no dessert. Frustrated, hand the check back to the server and said 'by the way, never got the dessert" and he said "i did not realize you wanted dessert'. My friend and I looked at each other surprised how nonchalant the staff was about this horrible service they just gave us.

Visited this spot last night for a birthday dinner. A group of 7 was taken care of nicely by our server. For starters the wine by the glass menu is short and weak. I had a few glasses of red and it was average at best. We skipped the apps and went straight to the main course . My girlfriend and I are vegetarians and there was a whopping 2 veg dishes to choose from, a grilled veg platter which I had, and for her the hummus platter. Mine very bland, served with rice that had no flavor. The hummus was ok, but it is not worth what they charge.

Although I didn't have a bad time by any means, I just felt that for all the hype and the price tag the food should have and could have been a lot better. I had the mushroom ravioli which were very good but the striped bass was greasy and the accompanying vegatables were overcooked and soaked in butter. The caesar salad was flavorless. At this point, it seems like you're paying for the Blue Ribbon brand name and not the food.

Time and time again I am amazed with The Bakery. The food and the service are always at perfection. It seems there may be one too many staff members and/or management on the floor but I suppose this is how they always manage to make sure everyone is happy with their experience. The last time I was there (last week) our food took a little too long and a manager promptly apologized and offered to comp our desserts (not expected but appreciated). He then checked in on us after the food arrived, as did our server.

My recommendation is this: Order tapas style then oreder the choclate chip breadpudding. Wines by the glass are lovely and if possible sit upstairs so you can watch the beautiful people pass by (windows, windows, windows).

Time and time again I am amazed with The Bakery. The food and the service are always at perfection. It seems there may be one too many staff members and/or management on the floor but I suppose this is how they always manage to make sure everyone is happy with their experience. What is so spectacular about this place? It's hard to pinpoint, but we keep returning about once a month. And we only order the SAME thing on the menu each time - it's hard to stray when the shrimp & bacon hash is so damn good. Sometimes the service is good, sometimes it's not. Service is kurt and professional, albeit a bit boring. Waits can be daunting, but that's Sunday brunch in NYC, babe. I also wish their brunch menu was a bit more extensive ... not much else to pick from, that's why we don't stray from the 'hash, but we love it!!

Tonight was our first time at BRB. The host was amazingly gracious! The server was only adequate. Loved the room & the windows. The menu was great: tapas, cheeses, comfort dishes. The food did not disappoint - the grilled catfish & steak were really yummy, ditto for the apps. No bread plates, though? Prices were a tad high. Still a nice place, though!

My group of 12 californians were looking to wine/dine one night and were recommended by many others to check out BR. We were seated in a very cozy and atmospheric cellar. I wasn't in the adventurous mood so i just had their NY Strip Steak which tasted mediocre. The thing i liked the most was the service. Both the waitress and owner were very hospitable. I wanted to try the foie gras terrine and bone marrow, but thought it was way too expensive. By the way, a lot of ppl rec BR's bone marrow dish. Their sweet bread was good. Overall, my friends and i had a delectable time. I would definitely come back here. It's expensive, but not outrageous.

Despite of the nice menu and the name "bakkery", there is only one choice of sweet dish for brunch: French toasts. I ordered the plain ones but, unfortunatelly, they were not as good as expected: heavy, too sweet and dry.
What a disappointment for a french toast lover !

The food is typical, but glorified. The ambience is quite nice however. The seating downstairs is very very nice as well - one can actually smell the fresh scent of baked bread while eating there - since the kitchen is right there in almost plain view. Service was alright - not too bad but one wishes that the wait staff could be a tad bit more friendly.

I've been here several times for Sunday brunch now - (note: it helps if you're a late riser as I find the wait is always reasonable if you show up after 3pm). The food is always tasty and extremely filling. Great bread and coffee too. A little expensive, but the neighbourhood is charming. The downstairs is great for groups.

Finally got to try this place when my parents were in from out of town. I was surprised at the old style basement and the noise level! While quite loud, the food is superb; Had the shrimp with garlic butter, and the goat cheese salad - both excellent and served by a team of very attentive waitstaff. I will definitely come back here whenever I can afford it - totally recommend the basement for a party or groups who want to talk the night away and the main floor for a romantic date.

After taking an out of town friend for a tour of the city, we looked around for a menu with choices for picky eaters. After being disappointed with the wait at another area restaurant, we found Blue Ribbon. I had heard it was good, but was afraid of a wait and hefty prices. I was pleasantly surprised to find there wasn't a wait, the prices were not too much and the bread they give you at the table was delicious! I will definitely be back.

Okay..$7 for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a chocolate and peanut butter brownie???? If it was outstanding I could see it as a nice change for lunch, but the peanut butter wasn't any better than one you could buy at any grocery store and the chocolate peanut butter brownie was horrible...so bland! I thought maybe I was mistaken and had a co-worker try the brownie and we couldn't even finish it! My advice...save your money! If you have a taste for a PB & J , make it at home. It will be 10 times better than anything they could've made.

I've actually had dreams about the chicken salad sandwich on (freshbaked) country sourdough bread with jarlsberg cheese. Especially on a hot day, the downstairs feels like a cool, candlelit castle - and they'll keep the iced tea coming. They aren't kidding with the name - the fresh baked bliss they create can even be picked up on the way out to stock your own kitchen.

i went to dine here a few times, and every time i felt the food was better... the prices are kinda steep for a college student, but once you get the dessert, it's worht every penny... i would like to recommend either of the bread puddings for dessert... you won't regret it... it seriously melts in your mouth...

The food here is great and the service is all right. We saw the waitress twice - once to tell us the night's specials and once to take our order. What am I tipping for again? The noise level is WAY too high. Imagine Times Sq at rush hour and then enclose it in a 20 x 20 room and you have this place. Guests shouldn't have to scream at each other across the table to have a intimate conversation. People got up and left while we were there because of the noise, it's THAT loud. It will be a while for a return trip from me unless I bring my earplugs and bullhorn.

The first two choices of wine wasn't in stock. We finally got one recommended. It was okay. The waiter ended up charging us for the wrong wine. I got the herring in cream. It was okay. Tasted like the ones you get in a jar. They probably did get it in jar. That's what happens when you have too much on the menu. You start cutting corners with the trips to the gourmet store. I ordered the $27 filet mignon medium rare and got it well done. I returned it and got a flurry of apologies. When it finally arrived, it tasted too rich. I don't like it when restaurants drown their food in butter or fat as they cook it. The potato pancake was overcooked. I wouldn't go back to this place.

The space was cramped, the server was slow and seemed almost annoyed that our group of 7 was even in the restaurant. The foie gras was decent, but the desserts, especially the Banana Walnut Bread Pudding, were great.

Full disclosure ... I love the original Blue Ribbon restaurant. Unfortunately, this place pales in comparison. Sure the breads are great, and the menu extensive, but in general the preparation is fairly boring and the taste mediocre. Thankfully, brunch is much better. Of course, good luck trying to get a seat. This place is packed on the weekends. They only take reservations for parties of five or more. Other pluses, cozy and romantic seating downstairs, an attractive dining room upstairs with wide open windows, a decent selection of wines by the glass and the fresh breads they make on premises.
