Decent food. Good portions. I think the owner needs to stay on top of the chefs. Good wine list, if you know your wines.

I had read a review about how Frank is bad at handling big parties, so I knew that it would be a good idea to make sure that all members of my party of 16 people were at the restaurant 15 minutes prior to our 8:30 pm reservation time.

Had my birthday party at Frank last week, walk in without reservation. Shortly I was able to sit at the bar with few and then more friends as they arrived.

I was very pleased, the atmosphere is softspoken as in the restaurant doesn't

A group of six of us ate at Frank's last night. Half the group were "foodie" types, the other half fast food types. Regardless, the unanimous consensus was the food sucked -- big time. My wife had the mussels. She thought they were day old and felt sick later that evening. My daughter had the gnocchi which was very mushy, and I had the tagliatelle with mushrooms. the Tagliatelle wasn't cooked evenly. Pieces of the pasta were stuck together and uncooked -- crunchy. Likewise, some of the mushrooms were cooked and others hard and rubbery. The "fast food" type group ordered spaghetti and meatballs -- the weekly Wednesday night special. Their comment was it tasted like spaghettios. I've never had spaghettios but I know it comes from a can. Bottom line, this place has gone way down. The food really sucked big time.

So, I had noticed the definite decline of Frank and so so food, but wanted to give it another shot. I went last night with my boyfriend and the deal is sealed - I don't want to waste anymore money there. First, the atmosphere obviously is not good, but I could deal with that if the food was worth it. It's not. The pasta was clearly from dry pasta out of a box, and the sauce is just not that tasty. The eggplant rollatini app was $14.95, and it was miniscule and ranked on the far lower end of the spectrum compared to rollatini elsewhere, including the frozen section. The service is dismissive; you basically just sit there and wait until someone feels like coming over.

Overall, we felt robbed when we left. I am totally willing to spend money on a good meal, but the prices at Frank are unjustifiably greedy. Lesson learned.

Pros: umm? the ravioli was ok

Cons: most food, price, atmosphere, service

Rigatoni Al Ragu was like heaven. Tons of food, delicious real Italian gravy, meaty. The wine choices are good too. Daily specials are always tasty. The down fall is it gets really crowded and there isn't a lot of space so you get bumped a lot, but that kind of adds to the feel that you're in someone's kitchen. Bravo!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. While its always crowded, the atmosphere is always friendly, warm and inviting. The place is plastered with old pictures of an Italian family (the owner's?) and it honestly reminds me of somehting I'd see in my great aunt's house. Oh and the food? To die for. You must try the burrata mozarella and the fennel and parmesan salad. All of the pastas are great (especeilly the pumpkin ravioli). In fact, every meal I have had here has been amazing! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

My date and I went to Franks last Tuesday to enjoy Frank's wonderfully silky tiramisu. We were seated in the dining room close to the computer that was feeding music to the speakers throughout the restaurant. We wound being one of 2 tables left at the end of the night. Apparently, the hostess who was young and had light brown hair (the description is here to assist management in identifying this vile person) felt like she could change the music from whatever they were playing that was pleasant to music that resembled a baby lamb being massacred by its own mother while its father was urinating on him. I can't stress enough how bad this music was. It was so bad that the illegal Mexicans wanted to cross the border once again. It was the one time in my life where I thought that being deaf would be a blessing. My date, who was having a wonderful time listening to my melodical voice ended the date prematurely because of this wretched hostess who obviously enjoys listening to children suffer. I've been to Franks many times in the past and always enjoyed it but if they are going to allow this kind of music to be played, I'll have no choice but to just get up and leave. It was that bad. I'd rather have Yanni or Paula Abdul sing at my wedding.

PS - the tiramisu was really really good.

This place is terrible, unethical, and dishonest. Let us know that the "specials" would cost more than any other entree on your regular menu.

I could sense that the waiter kid was trying to push the idea of ordering some "special" entree that was probably the most costly and neglected to tell us what the other "specials" were.

The table was also too cramped, and it was only after the night that I found out we could have waited for a table in their other room. The cramped table by the bar made things miserable for us.

Never again. Guess what? There are numerous places to spend good, hard-earned money on for dinner around the East Village area. You're not the only game in town, so wake up and improve your business, a##holes. I will take my money and friends elsewhere for dinner in the future.

Pros: Nothing, really.

Cons: Unethical business practice.

First off, you should know that the food here is excellent, and the service is above par.

However, after inspection of my bill, they charged me $1-3 more for each item ordered. The menu prices (in house and online) both reflect less than what I was billed for. Not only is this highly illegal, but quite dishonest and disgusting. They claim they are "updating the menu". However, in retrospect - no business should charge more for their dishes without publicity notifying customers of the price increases.

Plus the restaurant only accepts cash, which makes the whole operation all the worth more shady. You are better off going to a restaurant that accepts credit cards.

Do not go here unless you planned to get robbed. Although the food is great, there are just as good (and more honest) alternatives in the area.

Pros: The Food....thats it

Cons: The Management and Its Operations - STAY AWAY!

I have been here many times before and the food has always been pretty good, the service kinda blah whatever, but now I will never go back. I ordered the ravioli of the day, spinach and cheese. It was not at all bad, it was a special written on the board and I had failed to ask the price but figured it would be in the range of all the other pasta since it was still pretty basic, no bells and whistles. my friend ordered the gnocci in tomato sauce also not bad, but not something to write home about. When we got the check, we were both amazed. My no bells and whistles ravioli cost $17.95! More than some of the Entrees! They took advantage of the fact that is was a special and that no one asked for the price to squeeze a few extra dollars out of me. When my friend talked to the manager ( I was too angry to do so) he said I am sorry in a way that said, yeah not really sorry and yeah not the first time someone has said something. I think that is a really unethical way to run a business and don't think the food is really worth it. I want to enjoy my food and not think that I am just some cash cow the restaurant is trying to scam at every chance it gets. Super shady indeed.

I agree with the comments below. What was so wonderful about this place? The service was awful and my rigatoni tasted like Spaghetti-Os with meatballs. We tried three different glasses of wine all semi-recommended by our too-busy-to-suggest waiter and all three were terrible. Pure vinegar. There are so many fabulous italian restaurants in this city with fantastic service. We were do disappointed to find the Olive Garden in the batch on what should have been a great night. And all by reading the reviews we saw posted here. We should have left the minute the bad service began.

Pros: We were close to other restaurants to have a better meal. We didn't finish our food

Cons: Tasted like Chef Boyardee, the waitstaff and hostess were awful, bad wine, wobbly tables

I can't believe this place has so many good reviews, service is rushed and somewhat neglecting. After I realized one of the entrees we ordered was not going to make it to table, it took a while to catch the eye of our waiter who was sitting at one of the tables close to us playing with his phone. Food was ok, if you decide to go definitely avoid chicken liver bruschetta, it is bland and tasteless.

maybe i'm biased b/c i love small restaurants, but frank has such a great atmosphere. always bustling (but they don't take reservations, which is actually a plus), open environment, food and wine were all great. plus it has the unpretentiousness typical of the east village. highly recommend if you like italian food and don't mind [very] tight quarters. dinner for 2 cost me about $80 including a bottle of wine. don't forget to bring cash though. now go check it out, but only if you're a party of 2.

I wanted to choose an affordable and fun place to bring a group of friends for my birthday dinner, and I made the mistake of choosing Frank. First, the waiter actually scolded us because one of my friends was 10 minutes late, although we ordered two bottles of wine and appetizers as soon as we sat down. They shoved six of us into the tiniest table imaginable, so that our legs were literally pressed together (and I'm used to absurdly tiny NYC restaurants). The extremely cold waiter rushed us to order, then they brought our entrees out before we were even halfway finished our fennel salads, but because the table was so small and there was nowhere to put our plates, they just went ahead and took the half-eaten appetizers away! At this point, I was so irritated and embarrassed that I'd brought my friends to this place that it would be hard for me to objectively rate the main course, although I remember thinking my pasta was pretty good. When my friend ordered a single glass of wine, the waiter, who had been too harried to bother looking at her or listening, just assumed we wanted another entire bottle and brought it over uncorked, then he had the nerve to suggest it was her fault. The low point of the night came when the waiter spilled a cup of hot coffee on the back of the man at the table next to us and barely deigned to apologize. We saw him walk over and inform the manager with an eye roll, as in "I bet this guy is going to try to get a free meal out of this." But they automatically tacked on a 20% gratuity to our bill, which may account for why they made no effort to give us decent service. Overall, it was a very uncomfortable experience, as my entire party was made to feel like we were imposing by being there, and we are VERY low-maintenance. If you want to relax and enjoy a meal with friends, definitely go elsewhere. These people are total jerks, and not in the charming, I'm-insanely-busy- but-I-still-love-you-way the staff at other popular eateries pull off.

This place is great. Sure, you wait FOREVER for a table, but it's heaven once you're seated. Rustic setting, but loud and lively too. All the food is outstanding, especially the giant meatball--have one put in the middle of your table during entrees as one is enough for a party of 4 to share! I trek from the UWS to go here with friends on any given night.

I've eaten at Frank's several times, and the homestyle Italian dishes are consistently delicious. I've not had a disappointing meal yet. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the food is classic comfort food. It's a little like being fed by someone's Italian grandmother who is an excellent cook. If you go early enough in the evening (before 8) and are a small party, you are unlikely to have to wait for a table. I've also always been happy with the broad selection of wines. The service is polite and accomodating.

I went here last night with a couple of friends. The menu looked appealing and there was no wait to get a table. We were seated by a stained glass window towards the back through which you could see stacks of wood and assorted rubbish. You could also see about five rodents running back and forth and peering through the glass at our table. When we mentioned it to the waitress she sent someone in to explain to us that it was part of a different building behind theirs. Not only was the explanation condescending but there was not really an attempt at being apologetic whatsoever. Regarding the food: The bread came with a citrus-like olive oil which was actually very nice. The appetizers weren't bad. The main dishes though were mediocre at best. There was nothing spectacular about them... at all.

the cramped space is a major drawback, but the cheap hearty pasta and wonderful bruschetta are great. service is mediocre and they have no sugar for their coffee except raw brown cane sugar.. meh. haha, otherwise tho, really good pasta for the price! and good wine too!

I was brought the wrong meal however since the wait was so long I did not contest. The shrimp in this dish made me deathly ill the next day. This food is not worth the wait nor the sickness!

I went to Frank early, got a seat at the bar with a friend and it couldn't have been more enjoyable. The bartender was fun and accomodating and being able to order one huge meatball is brilliant. Crowd was a little stiff. Unless you're high maintenance and your heart's a tiny piece of coal, sharing a meatball with someone you love at Frank in the early evening is a great date.

I went with a party of 4. We called ahead to see what the wait would be around 8:30 and they said 30 minutes. We got there and it became an hour. The place is so tiny there's barely room to move. We sat at the crowded bar that only had one bartender while we waited. An hour and a half later we sat down. You are basically sitting on top of your neighbors. The menu is limited but the specials list is extensive. However, what they don't tell you is that the specials are more than twice the price of any entree. Our mozzareally appetizer was $18!!! And this place is on cheapeats. A little sneaky I thought. No entree is more than $15 on the menu, so we all ordered special and none were less than $20. The one thing was that the food was very good just not sure if it was worth the wait/small space/price.

Frank is my favorite, old standby Italian joint. It's very inexpensive and highly dependable. I usually split the mussels with my tablepartner (perfectly plump and fresh) and the arugula salad (crisp salady perfection) and the Rigatoni Al Ragu, which is the main reason I come here. The ragu is a meatball and sausage dream, and the rigatoni is always al dente and perfectly filling when shared. The wine list is also wonderful - no complaints, but expect a little wait, worth it when you get the great Italian food.

went to frank with 3 friends on a busy saturday night. waited a while but the burly door guy was so scary i didn't protest. plus, it was like 8:30 when we showed up. holy moly was it worth the wait!!! sat at the huge long table in the bar room, between 2 other parties, but it was cozy, i didn't mind. i don't understand why people hate sitting with other people?! anyway, oh my god, the reason why i created a citysearch account was to talk about the spaghetti dish i had... it was amazing!! rock shrimp, bread crumbs, that purple cabbage stuff, and almonds. WOW. i got a really big portion and i ate ALL of it. everyone loved what they got, actually, the papadelle, mushroom ravioli with truffel oil, the steak... so good! we took the waitress's reccomendations on everything and she got it all right. she was awesome, from going through a million specials with us, to answereing our questions about the crazy wine list and reccomending the pastas. people always talk about how long you have to wait and how bad the service is, and i found the wait to be long (30 min), but the service was great, no kidding! we all loved our waiter (asian girl) as much as we loved the food..... next time i go, i definitely want to try the berrata mozzerella (people next to us said it was amazing), and the big meatball! oh yeah, the one thing that stinks about this place is that it's cash only. there's like 9 atms on the block though.

been going here for 5 yrs. my favorite italian restaurant in the city. pasta is always very good, especially the black spaghetti. ambience is great; elbow to elbow, like being in europe. it's a long wait but the waitstaff has always been friendly. can't find this kind of joint for a good price in nyc.

I went at 6PM with only 1 other person both times I've eaten at Frank's, which seems to be a good trick - I had none of the problems with waiting, rushing, or poor service that others have reported. The service was friendly, patient, and helpful. The waiter even gave me a taste of wine to sample. My favorites are the mussels and the fish soup. They serve a perfect rustic bread for soaking everything up. Frank's is a great treat - excellent prices, good value. Check their website to see the daily specials first - the regular menu is a little limited, though I hear the salmon is excellent. I was only a little disappointed in a pasta with baby clams - just not enough seafood for the price. But besides that, I look forward to sampling more of what Frank's has to offer - in the early evenings.

We had a party for 12 a few weeks ago and we waited an hour and 15 minutes for our reserved table. Then we were told every five minutes that the table was almost ready and to go get drinks atthe bar next door. Food was good, but not worth the wait. Extremely poor service, waitress walked in on me inthe bathroom, because that's how they get from the basement to their kitchen. You be better served going to the Olive Garden in Times Square. Don't say I didn't warn you if you decide to go with a large group of 3 or more. If it's just 2 people, maybe a mere 30 minute wait is possible. I don't want to give the impression that this is a busy place, but that they don't have enough room to accommodate more than 40 people at time.

A month ago I ate here for the 1st time, thought it was good basic food at a great price. I brought my bf last night and was so disappointed!
our food never came at the same time. i got my appetizer. 5 mins later he got his. as if to even things out, he got his entree 5 mins before mine.
i ordered pear and gorgonzola salad. i received a dormroom presentation of sliced and peeled pear circling a chunk of gorgonzola. my entree chicken was dry n'salty, the mashed potatoes chalky. his pasta was worse. I'd said that the meatballs were delicious last time; he ordered rigatoni. based on flavour, the sauce was poured out of a large red can marked "heinz." this may explain the complete lack of wait for a table.
maybe it was just an off night, but I won't be back to find out.

I'm still recovering from lack of circulation. The space is so redicuously overcrowded! Do not go in parties larger than two!!! Food was excellent, but if you have a larger party prepare to sit on laps.

I've been going back to Frank because I enjoy the food and while the service has never been exceptional it hasn't been bad either... until my last visit. I went with a group of friends we made reservations and were seated promptly upon arriving at 7:30pm. Once seated our waiter informed us that he needed us out by 9:30?!? Just a little rude ... Rushed is an understatement, we ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees and were out of there before 8:30. Because there were 8 of us the 20% tip was included in the bill - unfortunately the service we received did not deserve such a tip.
I will miss the food, but with all the great restaurants in NYC I will NEVER go to Frank again!

Frank is one of the only restuarants that reminds me of my 1 year stay in Italy. The food is not fussed over, just simply good rustic Italian. I highly recommend the polpette (big meatball with potato and parmagian gratin) Although it is hard to get a table especially on a weekend night, there is a comunal table which always proves to be a good time. The service isn't great, but the food is worth waiting for!

I've been a customer of this restaurant since it opened. Yes, you have to be patient to get a table and with the service at times, but I have to admit, it takes even greater patience to work here. NY restaurant go-ers, esp. those with a date can be the rudest people on earth. So, some people don't like it here, fine - go back to your what's "in" magazines and choose another destination. Leave this place for people who are at home here and don't need need to be seen at the latest "hot spot". We'll keep coming back!

I am Italian. Its refreshing to find a real italian trattoria in NYC. Here I feel welcome and at home. Trattorie in Italy are informal and casual neiborhood places to eat. They are not about annoying service, they are about warmth and authenticity. Frank is all of these things and more!! I am surprised no one here mentions a wine list that rivals some of the best list in Italy. Its incredible to find $10 pasta along side rare Barolos, Barbarescos, and Brunellos. I am so impressed to find a place like this in a money oriented souless place like NY. this place could charge three times what they do but they don't... Thanks for one of the best meals i have had in NYC

A friend and I sat at the bar on a recent Friday night. The bartender disappeared every five minutes to smoke cigarettes with nearly every female in the establishment. He spent more time standing around outside than he did behind the bar. Not once, but twice, did the host have to call him back inside. It's fine if you want to pick up girls, but please do that on your own time. We got so fed up waiting around, we left. Judging from the other recent reviews written on here, bad service seems to be the norm at Frank's.

SO NOT WORTH THE WAIT! 06/22/04
The value is okay for the food but all I have to say is that it is NOT WORTH THE 1 1/2 HR WAIT at this TINY, LOUD, CROWDED, WANNABE-HIPSTER, HOLE-IN-THE-WALL which has a SNOBBY & RUDE MAITRE'D /HOSTESS who holds dearly onto a clipboard & acts as if it were the waitlist into heaven...more like HELL! We ended up going to the underrated seafood place Mermaid Inn next door which had no wait, great service and good food. If you??re not in the mood for seafood as the back-up neighbor, why not skip out on coming here in the first place & try the infinite number of great (not just so-so) Italian joints all over the E.Village?!

Problem at this ecletic little place is that it is an insiders hang out and you cant get a table if you are not in an acting class with a waiter. Food is OK, and scene is great, but please find a way to service new customers. They dont need new customers. Always crowded.

The food is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. It's a shame that this place has probably the worst service that I've ever encountered. And you have to wait over an hour for a table -- if you're not pals with the staff, that is. But with friends like those who needs enemies? Seriously, the service is so bad and the attitude so offensive that the good food is just not worth it -- it's not like you can't get food just as good at many other restaurants. I'll never be responsible for contributing another dime to this place. The staff is disrespectful and rude because this restaurant is always crowded. This is very shortsighted, as most places in New York don't stay crowded for very long. I won't ever be a part of that crowd again, and neither should you. You deserve better.

the famous food is delicious, but not worth the rude, disorganized staff. My friends and I waited an hour and a half when quoted 30 minutes, asked for water twice to two seperate people and never received it, were served out entrees before we could even begin our appetizer. The entrees were also delivered one by one with a span of 3-5 minutes in between each delivery. Once we reached the halfway point of our dinner, the check was dropped off as if to move us along.

This is the worst nyc dining experience I've ever had! The bartender has a nasty attitude, and it took a party of two 1 1/2 hours to get seated while party after party of the hosts 'friends' were given seating immediately. The pasta was undercooked, bland, and somehow the salad my friend ordered as an entree didn't arrive until 10 minutes and several complaints to the waitstaff after the UNDERCOOKED PASTA DISH. When I told the waiter the food was "okay", he corrected me and told me it was the best in the city. I then had to defend my opinion to that waiter, the host, and several other waitstaff. I can honestly say I hate this place and encourage others to stay away. I hope this place goes out of business soon.

Can be nice for couples and small groups. If you want to speak to each other, don't sit in the front room with the bar. On my most recent visit, the mussels were quite poor and sandy. Don't be afraid to send them back. Homey and packed-in atmosphere, but still fun and intriguing. Food is definitely good.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in New York. It's very unpretentious; the food is always fresh, simple and perfectly prepared; and it's a great value. I've been coming here since the summer of 1998 when it opened, and I've never had less than a great experience. The perfect, downtown neighborhood joint.

Very good(and solid) southern italian food w/ an appetizing menu that makes it tough not to order more than you can eat. Offers many wines by the glass, most of which are good. Yes the space is cramped, there's usually a wait, and the service is hectic, but that's all part of the fun. As Yogi says "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." So if you want a good meal at a good price w/ lots of "atmosphere", try Frank's, just make sure you're hungry.
