I have been going to Great Bear Auto for MANY YEARS. They are a GREAT SHOP. Don't misread the manager, Jerry's, "hard edge"--he's just REAL and TRUTHFUL--that's all. He is the nicest guy you'd wanna meet or deal with. They are honest mechanics and they know what they are doing. If they can't help you adequately, they will refer you to a specialist elsewhere. His workers are GREAT also, especially Joe. My dealer was going to replace a part for me on my A/C to "fix the problem" that would have cost me $1500!! Great Bear diagnosed the problem for me--it was a BLOWN FUSE!! GREAT MECHANICS I tell ya...

Pros: Great, Honest Mechanics

Cons: They close early (5:00 weekdays).

Took my car to get ignition problem resolved and was told it was a "bad fuel line" -- got charged an arm and a leg and when the problem didn't go away I took it elsewhere. Turns out they changed the air filter and nothing else!! The owner's name is Jerry and he's been avoiding my calls ever since.

Pros: convenient to Park Slope

Cons: nasty people, and dishonest

I got towed here a couple months ago after my car wouldn't turn over. It cost me $600+ to get a new timing belt. I've had it towed back there with the same problem (engine won't turn over or battery just died for no reason while it was parked) FOUR TIMES now because they've got my $600 and I can't afford to go elsewhere and pay more charges. I've been relatively (!) mellow about it and have remained pleasant to the mechanics but the owner, Jerry, has gotten downright rude and hostile. "Well", says he, "its an old car, lots of parts need replacing, I guess." "See you next time it rains" was the parting shot last time I saw him. Last night I tried starting the car for the first time since the LAST visit there and again, it wouldn't start. I give up. I'm getting it towed elsewhere now and will just have to borrow the $$ to get it fixed right this time. The only legal way I can think of to have something positive come from this experience is to warn others: NEVER EVER GO TO THESE PEOPLE!!
