This was the third time I ordered ( delivery ) from this place and each time it took them well over 1.5 hours even though I live only 2 miles away!! And when I called them to find out - they'd just reply saying "it's on the way, what more can I tell you?"

The food itself was so-so; very greasy and very spicy.

I'd suggest ordering from there only if you are willing to wait for 90 mins or more.

Who isnt constantly looking for a combo of good service and good food in manhattan? However, this rarity is def not found in this restaurant. BAD SERVICE!! The place wasnt busy yet still we didnt recieve menus until asking the server twice. Apparently asking for two glasses of water is also a big deal. After a few humphs from our server, the food arrived...presentation great, taste not so much. Despite eating non-veg i would highly recommend veg dishes over the non-veg. Dont go there for a birthday...the servers ruined the surprise of a dessert with a candle, and left it on the table saying happy birthday to "someone". Overall mediocre food, rude service

I've been to the Penang in Soho and decor-wise, I liked that place better. However, the food at both places is pretty much the same- reliably good, filling, and cheap! I recommend the Roti Telur for an appetizer (there's enough for 2) and for the entrees, the Mee Goreng fried noodles and the mango chicken.

Food and ambience was generally good. The glass noodles were tasty, but the meat in one of the beef dishes was a little tough/"tendon-ish"/dry. Ambience is as others have described, candle-lit with large glass windows, pan-Asian decor, bar. Wait staff were inexplicably pushy tonight, however (which I haven't experienced on past visits). It was a Tuesday night with plenty of empty tables and they kept hovering and asking to clear our dishes before we'd finished, aside from missing the glasses twice in a row while pouring water.

Took my girlfriend here for dinner on a friday night, we were seated promptly and the service continued to be good for the remainder of the evening. We shared the Calimari which was prepared very differently then we expected (for the better). We followed with the duck, which was good, but we were mesmerized at the people next to us who ordered the coconut shrimp - It looked and smelled amazing, it'll have to be something we come back for. We suggest steering clear of the desert, it wasn't worth the money (go to Big Nicks accross the street for that). I suggest giving the place a shot. Share portions as you can always order more and the food arrives quickly.

This is a great restaurant, especially if you like Malaysian, Indian, or Chinese food. They have a great express lunch menu if you work in the area and they deliver with a $12 minimum purchase. My favorite dishes are the Roti Canai (a roti bread appetizer with a curry chicken and potato dipping sauce) and the Pisang Melaka (a roti bread desert with bananas inside and a coconut dipping sauce). I once ordered delivery and the order came with an item that I didn't order. When I called the restaurant, they quickly sent over the right item. You should try this restuarant.

PROS: Great roti canai
CONS: Many items with tofu

This place is just alright. Some of the staff was a bit rude and pushy. It was a quiet Monday night and not very busy and I did not see what was the rush. Some of the dishies were okay. Decor was average. Try it once.

This restaurant is dark and candlelit during dinnertime -- a great date place. There is a small, intimate, but chill bar/lounge down in the basement -- again a great place for pre-dinner drinks if you're on a date. The food is of a high quality and the menu is varied -- all around solid Malaysian fare. Lots of spicy dishes. The price isn't too bad -- especially for New York and compared to restaurants in the area.

This place has good food--full of spices and quality ingredients. Greasy at times, but overall the food was very yummy. However, it is certianly not worth the price it charges. Penang is a chain, it should not be charging so much for your run of the mill Malay dishes. It's good a good atmosphere, a tad on the darker side, but good for dates.

Why would anyone ever go here when the same food (and menu) is double the price of Baba and Jaya in Chinatown. If you're looking for good Malaysian good. Baba and Jaya are definitely the way to go.

I came here on a date, and it was bustling yet we felt we had our own space. The food was great and different from anything else.

The food at Penang is always so full of flavor. Their daily specials are always a surefire hit. If you're looking for a good "NY value" and great tasting food then head over to Penang.

My fiance and I have been making the rounds of all the Columbus Avenue eateries since moving to the neighborhood from the downtown hinterlands recently. We were thrilled to see a Malaysian restaurant, but somewhat puzzled by the arrival of my entree, which was a decent cut of beef slathered in what tasted literally identical to A-1 sauce. I would not recommend Penang simply for this reason. What could they be thinking??

Why anyone would want to go to a noisy, overcrowded, expensive place that doesn't serve very good food is beyond me. I was with a group of 15 people that had a reservation and it still took an hour to seat us, even though the entire party was there. Then to top it all off, their idea of group dining was to put three small round tables pushed up against each other. It wouldn't be so bad if the food was good. But unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Just because you add mango or coconut to a dish doesn't make it any more exotic or taste better.
