I was looking for a special restaurant to take my boyfriend for a special occasion. We've been to soo many restaurants lately in the city that haven't really impressed us as they should have - restaurants that have been rated really well on Zagat, but turned out to be a bust. My friend introduced me to the website Eatery Expert @ www.eateryexpert - I guess you can call it a recommendation website. We wrote in and asked them where we should go - I was even open to Brooklyn. They came back with a few options and after much deliberation, we decided to go to Po. It was great - I couldn't have asked for a more delicous, more intimate restaurant. The service, food and ambiance was exactly what I was looking for. If you're looking for a special time, Po is your restaurant!

I went here for my first time, and thought the food was excellent. I got the apple, walnut, radicchio and gorgonzola salad. My friend got some type of a goat cheese salad with sort of "matchstick" vegetables. My apple salad was scrumptious, and my friend's goat cheese salad was also very nice.

For entrees, I got the veal marsala(?) with shallots and mushrooms. It was divine! The veal was SO tender.

My friend got some type of a fish in a pink cream sauce, with beans. I tried a bit, and it was very good.

For dessert I got the Po sundae. It was very good although I would have liked a bit more fudge sauce. My friend got what I think was a dessert special that night...a warm apple tart with ice cream. The tart itself was of such a good quality...perfectly flaky.

My cappuccino was also excellent.

All in all, a wonderful dining experience.

The only downside was, the tables are really packed in there...so much so that, in order to sit on the "other side" of the table, it requires pulling the table out into the aisle, so that the other person can get in/out from their seat.

The noise level was also a bit loud, and with the tables being so close together, sometimes (as was apparently the case when I dined there), we had to endure the "whining" conversation of two young women next to us.

They also had a very tiny bar that seats maybe 3-4 people, that seemed like a very nice place for a single person from the neighborhood to just be able to pop-in for an impromptu dinner.

I would definitely return to this place for the food alone.

I have been eating at Po for dinner for years and the food, service, wine and atmospher get better every time I go. I am stunned that they are able to still impress me after all these years with their unbeleivable food, amazing wine and now incredible brunch! GO GO GO GO GO! The traditional egg fritatas are to die for, washed down with a proseco you feel like you are in Italy..... this is the best food experience yet! Reservations for dinner are nearly impossible, I highly reccommend their brunch to get a taste of the food. YUMMMMMMMMY!

I went here the other night and had a fabulous time. The dining room was tightly packed but my date and I lucked out by getting the seat next to the window so it was very intimate and romantic. We had the gorgonzola pine nut crusted salad with arugula and beets which was very unique and delicious and I ordered the black fettucine with mussels, sundried tomatoes, green chilis and scallions! It was amazingly yummy and I HIGHLY reccomend trying this place. It's definitely all about the food at this place. The overall ambiance is very chic New York without trying too hard and it is in a great location in the middle of the West Village. My date got the gnocchi and although my dish turned out to be the real winner both of us were happily pleased. Also we just stepped in at 8:45 pm on a Wed night and were seated immediately. It was busy but if there are seats open you will get one. I also did not feel rushed at all. The waiters were wonderful. When trying to decide between two of the white wines the waiter poured us a taste of each to decide. It was a very nice touch. It was beautiful night.

The chef's tasting menu here is really the best deal in town. The food is fantastic and for $50 it's tough to beat. The service was good, the many courses were exciting and for dessert, they brought each of us a different item so that we could taste a bit of everything: I thought that was a really nice touch. For a crowded and busy place, no one tried to rush us; although I was a bit annoyed that they sat us next to the kitchen in spite of the reservation I'd made, it was true that our party was one person short of what I'd reserved for. This did not get in the way of our meal.

We had an absolutely amazing meal at Po with two other couples. We were so happy we were able to get a reservation. The food was fresh and delicious and the desserts were scrumptious. Very intimate, small but good wine list, and attentive service.

Po is hands down my favorite place. I've gone many times and have always had the best experience. The service is always friendly and attentive and the waiter even remembered us last time and graced us with an amazing and free sundae:) The pasta is amazing and the white bean bruschetta is addicting. My boyfriend and I always have the best time, as does everyone else I've taken there.

First review for me - i usually recommend by word of mouth - but I cant explain how delicious our experience was with each plate. I'd deem myself a foodie - been to most of the event dining spaces and have plenty of locals that I love. I've been wanting to cross this one off the list for a while, but it might have a permanent ranking at the top. If you're curious, make a reservation - on Tues we made a Thurs res for 9:00. Walked in at 9:02 and we were seated straight away. Great host, totally gracious server and everything came out quickly. Overall, I didnt feel like I was on a crazy food adventure - most foods were simple, traditional italian dishes. But each plate tasted like it was homemade and it was so fresh. It felt like it was thrown together magically in seconds, rather than prepped the day before by an army of cooks in the (tiny) kitchen in the back.

I agree with most reviews - get the tasting menu. We had a bottle of the Cortese di Gavi ($34) and the tasting - tortellini, stuffed with broccoli rabe and crema di roma in a butter sage sauce - out of this world. It was like dessert! Good gnocchi - bolognese was awesome - not usually a skate lover, but it was done over a traditional cucumber salad with a refreshing parsley oil - super summer dish. Rustic cheese selection with a fig and marscapone dessert that was perfect. All in all, the bill was under $200, we ate like kings and we have a new favorite restaurant. Perfect for date night!!

my boyfriend and i came here for dinner and we both loved it. food was delicious--I had an excellent porcini-crusted cod and he had the orichette. both were wonderful, although the pasta portion was a bit large. service was excellent, and the setting cozy and romantic. my only advice is to go early to try to snag one of the three tables in front of the windows--they're awesome for people watching.

Last night was my third visit to Po and the food, as usual, was delicious. Service was excellent - at the restaurant's consistent standard. I had the lamb cooked medium rare with eggplant, the lamb was juicy, tasty and left me totally satisfied. I thought the eggplant accompaniment was so-so due to the skin's chewy texture but flavorings were perfect. My friend had the pork - I found it ever so slightly dry (but pork's often like that). The salad appetizer was simple but good, it wasn't saturated in oily dressing but came with an excellent vinegarette on the side. There are so many choices along that street and Po is a favorite I've no problem returning to.

Had the tasting menu which is a steal at $40, 6 courses.. dessert was bad tho. =( but otherwise, the food was delicious, the wine was great, and our waiter was soooo nice, and treated me and my friend very well. lovely place, would definitely come back.

The food was delicious. One problem....the floor. I had an uncomfortable experience because the floors of the restuarant are very shaky so whenever anybody walked by my chair (which was often because the restaurant maybe sits 40 people) my chair would go up and down. By the end of the night I was so naucious that I couldnt even eat the good food...

When my family or friends are visiting me from out of town I always take them here. Place is very small and intimate which I love. It's really refreshing compared to other huge and loud "it" restaurants. I absolutely love their pasta. You can pretty much order anything from the menu and you'll be pleased. Waiters are very nice. Their desserts are to die for. I love their affogato. You should definitely try it.

This past Friday I took my wife here for her birthday and it was a very good choice. The setting is very romantic and the service very attentive and friendly. The food was good, but not amazing. We started with a watercress salad that was very good and a meatball appetizer that was ok. Then the pasta with a braised lamb ragu was very good. We got two entrees which were ok. One was a special of the day white tuna covered in a tomato based sauce which was a bit salty and not that creative. We also got the lamb steak which was pretty good but strangely reminiscent of a shwarma because of the combination of flavors.

The wine list is very good if you like Itialian wine. We got a bottle of Nebbiolo which was delicious. I love wine lists that have a range and Po's certainly does, with a number of bottles around $28 and a variety of bottles all the way up to around $100.

The real blemish on our visit was that I had asked that they bring a candle on our desert for my wife's bday and they totally forgot. When I told the waiter later when my wife went to the bathroom he checked the reservation, saw the note and apologized but it was too late. Other than asking if I wanted him to bring another desert with a candle, he didn't offer anything else to make up for it. It was both surprising and dissapointing that they would forget since otherwise they seemed quite detail oriented. I'd go back here, but probably stick to patsa, salad and wine.

We went to Po this past weekend and had one of the best dining experiences ever. The service was incredible, the waiter was extremely helpful with choosing a wine and describing each dish in great detail. We were seated immediately, although I highly recommend a recommendation as Po is a small restaurant. We had the six course tasting menu. Every course was delicous. It included a salad, two pasta dishes, a main dish, a cheese plate and two deserts to die for. At $48 per person, I found it to be a bargain. You will be highly impressed and like us talk about going back before you even leave the restaurant.

I have been to Po three times over the last few years and it has been consistently great. Historically best experiences have been when I ordered the Chefs tasting menu. This time around was no exception. Each course was very good, especially the pumpkin ravioli. At $48 per person it's a bargain. The wine list is also very reasonable too. The good service started from the moment we walked in the front door. Give it a try, you will not be disappoined !

What got us to try this restaurant in the first place is the old man that sits by the front everynight. He's very friendly and tells you stories of famous folks that have come to his family's restaurant. Tells people he's the 'mayor of the block'. So cute! Go inside and the great service starts at the door. They let us sit even though we only had 2 out of a party of 4 - the restaurant was packed but they honor reservations (unlike a lot of restaurants). The gnocci is made fresh daily, and tastes so light. They mix is with pieces of fresh cut mozerella right before they serve it to you piping hot. After you start eating, the cheese starts to melt and ads a lot of flavor. Yum. Great wine list with an extra expensive selection for all you big spenders.

We ate here on our last night in NYC. It was perfect. We had one of the tables by the window and if you go I would recommend requesting one of these. It was an outstanding value for NYC. We had a nice bottle of wine, dinner, and dessert for under $200. The mussels and clams were fresh and my only complaint was there were only six mussels...I could've eaten a dozen. The steak I had was perfectly cooked and I've never had a flank steak this tender. It was a perfect meal and I would definately go back again.

Cornelia Street looks like a Broadway set for West Side Story and the inside of Po is so cool & quaint you really can't top the setting for a romantic dinner in NYC. Just don't take the seat between the bar and the back half of the restaurant, i saw a woman get nudged 40times sitting there. Anyway, food is great, creative, fresh as always with Battali....yet my combo of dishes were too salty....the waiter couldn't fill my water glass enough. The white bean brushetta to start was incredible and the pasta was phenomenal. I almost think you can get away with a salad & pasta....by the time you get to the entrees you are struggling to finish, given the decent portion sizes of salads, pasta plus the bread & brushetta to start.

The food is amazing... especially if you get the "Chef's tasting menu" and your favourite bottle (or two!) of wine from an extensive selection of wines. The place is small and intimate and you may feel a little crowded, but the service is excellent and it's great for friends out, a romantic date, or a special occassion. People dress in suits or evening gowns as well as shirts & jeans. The food can get pricey but the prixe fixe "tasting menu" is the greatest food for a good price and they cater the food to any food allergies or food you don't like. Recommendations, of course, are required! Please be aware that it's CASH or AMEX only!

As noted in the other review by Nicole, Po is a phenomenal restaurant - for both casual dining and special occasions. The atmosphere is wonderful for couples, three's and four's to enjoy delicious cuisine in an intimate, tasteful setting. The wine list is not very long, but the wines I have had have always been fairly good ones. I also had the gnocci - and it was the best gnocci I have EVER had. Definitely call for reservations though!

PROS: Phenomenal quality of cuisine, tasteful decor, warm atmosphere
CONS: Too many people know about it!

This West Village Italian restaurant is a gem. I highly recommend calling ahead and trying to get a window table. The street scene is wonderful in that area--but not better than the food.

The menu changes with the seasons and I loved the gnocchi when I was last there. Don't skimp on desert!

I went here with my boyfriend and another couple. We all had the tasting menu and unlike some of the other reviews, I felt there was more than enough food. The quail was fantastic and unique and the pastas were full of flavor. We were also seated promptly at the time of our reservation and the service was very quick and professional. I would recommend this place to anyone and would without a doubt come again.

The quail was fantastic and unique and the pastas were full of flavor. We were also seated promptly at the time of our reservation and the service was very quick and professional. I would recommend this place to anyone and would without a doubt come again.

Pros: Food, Service

.

Went there last night, and I have to say I was extremely dissappointed. We had the 6 course tasting menu - the salad and first course pasta was good; the gnocchi was watery with a tasteless sauce; then came out the entree, a burnt cod. It was burnt when the waiter brought it over and I'm thinking "didn't the waiter smell that it was burnt?". The service was horrible too. I had 8:30 reservations, and when I arrived there were at least 4 tables empty, but I had to wait 20 minutes! I even overheard the one waiter argue to the host about that and then they conveniently switched to speaking Spanish. Bad, bad, experience. Mario should make them change the name.

I came here for my birthday and I must say Po is truly a great restaurant! While my party did have to wait a little, we were seated reasonably soon. Our server was quite knowledgeable about the wines and we had a customized 6 course tasting menu created for us! From the goat cheese and caperberry dish to hangar steak to pancottas, the food was amazing! Highly recommended.

Pros: Great food, efficient, casual environment

I've been going to PO since it opened almost 10 years ago and I don't understand any of the negative reviews. A couple of tips: 1. Make a reservation and arrive on time. 2. Don't go on Friday or Saturday night- it's just too crowded and you will feel rushed to pay and leave. Other than that, the food is still great and it's a fantastic value. Yes, Mario Batali left, and it may not be as outstanding as it was, but it is still some of the best Italian fare in NY and the service is almost always excellent, especially if you're a regular.

Pros: Excellent Food

Being Italian I cannot say that the food was good. Although we were seated quickly, ambiance was cozy, service was decent the overall menu selection and overall food taste and presentation was less to be desired! The mussles had be be a portion of maybe 8-9 mussles only and the gnocci were basically all garlic- garlic is just meant to be a condiment- way tooo much garlic. The veal on the flip side was good. Overall not impressed.

I've been to Po a few times and so far it is my favorite little italian resturant in NY. The food is fabulous, the service is great and the atmosphere is laid-back, not pretentious. The two best tables at Po for a romantic dinner for two are the two tables in the front located in the window nooks.

The Linguine Vongole is fabulous, a bit oily but still really good. Other items I've had are grilled quail with reduced balsamic vinegar sauce and a wide, flat pasta with braised rabbit in a tomato sauce. Po always starts you off with excellent bread and really good olive oil.

During the summer months, they have two tables for two out in front of the resturant. It's a nice place to sit if you want more of a private dinning experience. Cornelia Street is a quiet and quaint street in the West Village.

Pros: Laid-Back, Great Food & Service

.

This place was amazing! I had the homemade linguine with clam sauce and I cannot begin to tell you how fabulous it was! My husband had the homemade parpadalle with pork ragu. Thia place is reasonably priced as well. The service was great too. Our waitress was so helpful with the wine list. I would definately go back. The menu is not that big, but so fresh and fabulous!

Pros: Homemade Pasta, Attentive Wait Staff, Excellent appetizers

Cons: Tight Space

.

Excellent service, very good value and vibrant simple flavors characterize the Po experience. No, the dishes do not surprise, but they are perhaps not meant to do so. Instead, they are well-executed classics with a delicate embelishment here and there.

The wine list is good and fairly priced. Service is excellent - with the kind of intelligent, professional, articulate craft that is sorely missing in too many restaurants in NYC today. Without a reservation, our table of three was seated recently within 45 minutes (at 10:40 pm) and treated to a fine tasting - although we closed with the restaurant past midnight we were never rushed. Good show, Po!

Thought this place was going to be stuffy because of the $$$$ signs, but is not at all! Not too dimly lit, small restaurant with friendly staff... a nice place for a date. Make sure to book reservations far in advance for a good time slot, walk-ins difficult. I was 45 minutes late for my reservation and the staff did not mind at all and were still friendly, even though the place was packed. Prices were not so bad, considering we got an appetizer, two entrees, glass of wine, two desserts and a cappucino for $70 (without tip.) Definitely try it!

Went with 3 others (2 couples) and the place is sooo cozy and romantic. We all ordered the 5 course tasting menu for $40/person. The whole table must participate and you have to be willing to let the chef cook for you with no menu. We did, and were NOT dissapointed! Great food (and lots of it too!) especially for that price, though it would have been worth a lot more! Will definitely go back!

Po was such a disappointment. We were seated promptly at a nice table in the front, but dinner was downhill from there. Our waiter was rigid and unfriendly and after he took our order we did not see him again. My linguine with clams was decent but my friend's rigatoni was embarassingly undercooked. My other friend's fish was salty beyond being edible. Everyone at the table tried it and no one could force it down. The portobello appetizer was so mediocre. The dessert of ice cream with hot fudge and caramel was a joke--there was a teeny drop of sauce and that was it. We left feeling unsatisfied and still hungry! This place is very very overrated, avoid it! With so many places to go in the city, this place is not worth it.

We waited for ONE HOUR to be seated, and the 6 course tasting dinner was very disappointing, but I'll let you decide (note, the chef chooses the courses). Salad course was beets and olive oil (I'm oversimplifying but that's what it tasted like), pasta course was ONE ravioli second pasta course was gnocchi, main course was quail (five full bites tops), cheese course was OK, and dessert was strawberries with balsamic and pepper. Even though the courses weren't what we had hoped or envisioned, in every instance they came up short...no surprises, no inventive flavor combinations. Also, we knew it was going to be small and we were prepared, but just know that when seated if you extended your arms out you'd be able to palm the heads of the people flanking you. And when you leave, you'll be palming your unsatisfied stomach. This is my first review.

A good little restaurant with well-prepared, inventive food. Not an extensive menu but you don't' really need it. Prices are fair and service is attentive. Would definitely go back there.

great food, lamb paillard sandwich to die for, and oh-so perfect gnocchi with marinated artichokes. the setting is charming, the service excellent, and you cant beat the price. Tip: go for lunch early, 12:00 say, when the place and street is quiet and enjoy the romantic and charming setting and delicious food.

i loved eating at po! We were seated at a very secluded window table, so the crowd and noise wasn't an issue at all for us. Actually it ended up being very romantic. We also had the prix fix menu-the pastas were excellent, the salmon to die for, and the desserts, especially my chocolate espresso brownie was orgasmic. I highly recommend this place to anyone!!! The wine list was also impressive, the pinot bianco has become my favorite wine!

A pleasant dining experience...food was great, hearty and satisfying. The lamb was wonderful, although I could do without all the beans. This restaurant was a great value, even though I know nothing about the prix fixe menu.

The best food and best service, the waitress even helped cut my entire steak dinner after I had dropped my knife on the floor due to a broken arm. Went there on a double date and enjoyed everything from the down to earth people and the great food. Tried each of the four entries we order, steak, bbq salamon, linguini, and the salad, although I thought the menu was a little limited it was perfect. only downfall was a little noisy in the beginning.

All the hype...and for what?? The prix-fixe menu is supposed to be the "best value" in the city....not so my friends. A salad, two pastas, a minisquel quail, a piece of cheese and an average dessert left the gas-tank half-empty. The small restaurant was cosy...good thing I didn't sit near the front by the non-existent waiting area and crowded bar or near the back by the bustling kitchen. The service left something to be desired. Dishes were thrown at us in a "get 'em in-get 'em out" fashion that made for an unpleasant dining experience. If you're looking for value, go to the local Italian restaurant around the corner

They tried putting three of us at a table for two, with two men over 6 feet. After much ado, we were given a table for four with a paper tablecloth and a broken chair. Two people wanted the $40 tasting menu but all three had to order it. The salad greens were fair, the two pastas mediocre at best. The quail was dry. The cheese plate consisted of three quarter size samplings of cheese. Poor. Each person was given a different dessert. The brownie- bad, the cheesecake- good, the apple pie- delicious a la mode! A different server brought each course with no one person overseeing whether or not the food was to our liking. We had to ask them to slow down the pace of serving the courses, after our second pasta dish. The bill was $164 including tax and tip.

It's of a different caliber without Mario Batali. Cramped quarters and absolutley no waiting room make for an unacceptable experience considering the quality of food. Worth the aggravation three years ago - now I'd pass.
