RUDE SERVICE. TWO HOUR WAIT FOR A RESERVATION. I created a citysearch account just so I can write this review on Essex. I will never go back to this place and I suggest others stay away, too. I made a brunch reservation 1 month prior

Overcharged. Called to dispute and after being asked to call back 3 times, asked to speak to the GM who refused to help us unless we showed up the next day between 4:30 and 5:30.

When I explained that this was unaccetable after being ripped off he said "You don't know who you're talking to."

WHOA. I guess he's connected and maybe we should call NYPD.

We called our bank and will never go back.

DON"T wate your time or your money.

I know Essex is known for their brunch and late night crowd but I opted to come on a week night. It was not too crowded and our waitresses were pretty nice.

We had to wait for my boyfriend for a while they let us sit down without the complete party, which I felt so grateful for. LOL I ordered a glass of Mango Margarita while waiting and it definitely kept me buzzed and distracted.

The fried calamari was good but nothing special. I got the Cuban Sandwich for my entree and my boyfriend got their Wednesday special, a whole Lobster with cobb of corn and some potatoes. The sandwich was grilled and the flavor was great. The lobster on the other hand, is slightly small but fresh and juicy.

My Italian friend also really likes his Swordfish with Mussels and he requested that I give Essex a great rating.

I heard their famous dish is the potato pancake and I look forward to returning for brunch sometime.

Pros: Good food, great daily happy hour specials

It was a great experience overall. We had a large party and no reservations and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. The food was really tasty. They have a decent wine list as well as a good selection of cocktails. The DJ was playing a nice mixture of music but it wasn't really loud just right....a good night out with friends...way to go ESSEX

We had oysters on our mind, and then had a couple dirty martinis. We asked the DJ pump up the music and started to dance. Next thing you know, some real good looking guys came and bought us drinks and we had a great time. So we got hungry afterwards and ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. Not a boring moment. I'd relive it any weekend.

We stopped in on Tuesday night on a friend ??s recommendation ?Just a fabulous place. We made a reservation for 6 of us. We ended up being more than 10 ,they were great accommodating us.They made more space for us at the table in the back of dinning room. The atmosphere was great. The food was just perfect especially the mussels were fantastic, also I got the Fillet Mignon which I strongly recommend it. The specialty drinks are amazing. Watermelon martini is my personal favorite ,be careful though they are deceptively strong. The waitress was great too, as she ran back and fourth with rounds of drinks. We had a incredible time. I highly recommend this place

I went for dinner at Essex with my wife on Friday night. Everything from the food ,to service, to the management was excellent. The cooking was phenomenal, and we enjoyed both our appetizers and main courses. A great place to eat on the lower east side. I would definitely go there again, and recommend it to everyone.
Good job Essex

We had reservations last night at 7pm. Waited at the bar after letting the hostess know we would like to sit. Strawberry mojito was watery and tasteless, kettle soda not strong enough. Mango mojito was better but needs improvement as well. By 7:15 and 2 walks over to the hostess stand (about 5 other tables were already sat) we were still waiting for our table. I was totally ignored and was told one more minute. The place was empty so i didnt understand the wait. Finally we were brought upstairs to an empty section and shown to a 2 top, there were three of us. I can understand if the place was packed but if the restaurant is empty we want a table we can fit more than 2 plates on. We informed the hostess that the table was unacceptable and received an argument and nasty attitude from her. The best move of the night was leaving there asap after feeling as though they were discriminating against us and went over to Rayuela. Fantastic service and amazing food!! Go there instead!!

I have been here a few times for brunch and decided to try dinner with friends from out of town on a Friday night. Way more upscale for dinner and pricier than brunch but still great value by New York standard. Our waitress was super nice and when we had questions about wine she brought her supervisor to the table who picked out an amazing bottle that was also cheap. The food was great and the portions were huge. I would definitely come back.

I just wanted to take the time and alert the NY/Citysearch of this restaurant's DISGUSTING behavior.

I made a reservation at Essex for my girlfriends birthday dinner and unfortunately had to cancel to fly down to Florida because my grandmother was dying in the hospital. On the way to the airport to catch a flight down to Florida, I remembered that I had a reservation at Essex so I called to explain the situation. After explaining the situation, the manager explained that he had heard this excuse before and was charging me for canceling my reservation because it was their "policy." To make a long story short the manager wouldnt not compromise his policy and showed no remorse for my emergency, then proceeded to tell me to f off. He said the only way he would budge would be for me to fly to Florida and produce a notarized death certificate before my reservation to avoid the "penalty."

In a moment where I was already in extreme emotional distress, the last thing I needed was more from a restaurant that could fill a table in NYC within minutes on Friday. He and the staff at Essex caused me additional emotional despair and I will never step foot in that restaurant again. My girlfriend and I used to go to Essex almost every other week and this is how they treat their customers. I am glad they don't value their customers and human beings and I hope those reading take that in mind when deciding upon the many restaurants in NYC. The food isn't good enough to support a restaurant that exhibits such behavior.

Get a new dj if you want people to stay and dance.I can't stand a place that has such great potential but lacks in every way. I went to a birthday party on Friday for my friend and this place needs help. The disc jockey was playing, the worst music from the 90's. The service was great the trays of fruit were fresh and yummy and the cocktails were perfect. Get a new dj if you want people to stay and drink. I left way too early due to the horrible music and horrible system, that seems to be way off.

Extremely long wait, even when they tell you 30 minutes. Slow food service and waitstaff with no personality, and hostessess who obviously have no brains to estimate time. Food was good and prices affordable but definitely much better places to eat.skip it!

I have been to Essex numerous times and each time, the level of service continues to decline. After sitting down at our table, we waited for over 45 minutes before our orders arrive. When the plates did arrive, the food was cold like they have been sitting around for 20 minutes. Additionally, two groups of customers with similar in numbers of people arrived at their tables 20 minutes after we sat down and they received their plates (some of the same orders) before we did. When one of my group members attempted to point out the delay to the male manager, he literally just walked away and ignored her.

Overall, I used to enjoy eating brunch here, but after a few times of horrible service, I recommend anyone looking for decent brunch to go other restaurants. There other so many other good options to choose in LES.

Went on Monday evening with a couple of friends for dinner and had a spectacular experience. Our waitress, a lovely woman from South Africa, helped us through an extensive food and drink menu and was spot on with her choices. Cheeseburger Empanadas were amazing. And you can beat the prices-$1 oysters and half-price Martinis for happy hour. Can't wait to try brunch.

We had the worst table service at this restaurant. The dinner lasted 2 1/2 hours as we waited what seemed like eternity for our appetizers and entrees. When our appetizer and entree dishes finally came out, 3 out of the 4 plates were cold. What would have been a great meal was ruined. The waitress was inattentive -- she did not provide cutlery for the entree after our first set was taken away. We noticed other tables were also waiting for their food. What was most disappointing was that the waitress and the hostess didn't care after we brought up the issue. The bar area is good if you're just looking for a place for drinks. Do not come here for dinner.

Having read the previous reviews of Essex and figuring Easter brunch might be a bit of a madhouse, I made reservations about 5 days in advance (no problem, by the way, they still had several times available). Upon arrival, I was totally glad I did, as it was utter bedlam inside - in my experience though, any place with this many people waiting to eat is usually worth it! And it totally was - the Easter brunch menu had an astonishingly wide selection of amazing dishes, and additionally it comes with THREE cocktails, your choice of mimosas, screwdrivers, or bloody mary's? All for twenty bucks?? I was blown away. The food was first rate, the atmosphere was lively and fun, and we couldn't have had a better time. Bigups to Essex, you gotta come check this place out!!

This place serves up the best brunch in town. I wouldn't listen to any of the negative reviews. Make sure you plan ahead and show up very early or prepare to wait as you can easily wait for over 1.5 hours to be sat on any given weekend day for brunch.

This has got to be the best place for a brunch EVER!! Their food is absolutely delicious..and inexpensive!! Not to mention first 3 rounds of drinks for free..mimosa, bloody mary or the screwdriver. although I DO recommend calling in advance for reservations, because you will be waiting for a VERY long time, an hour the LEAST..but once you've had a meal from their you will understand why its such a great place!!!

Picture it. LES. Random, chilly, late morning/early afternoon Sunday.

My 2 friends and I head over to Essex. We heard the food was creative and hearty and the space was cool. We put ourselves on the list. We are fine with the 45 minute wait. AFTER 75 MINUTES! - we ask, what's going on? The hostess very flippantly says another 30-45 MINUTES! We saw people who came in after us but were larger parties get seated first. We saw them ask for large parties who had left. We saw them take people who had only just gotten there but were 5-6 people get seated because that was the size of the table. They had no respect for the other smaller parties who were waiting patiently.

We didn't really need to give this waiting room our money.

My girls and I went to Brunch last weekend and had a blast. I have been taking my friends and out of town'ers and parents there for years. Yes the place is crowded and yes the place can be loud but that is why we all love Essex's. The prices are just right for the location and the drinks are tasty and everlasting. I can't believe that people can complain about a brunch where the portions are huge and selection is just right and the price is only $16. I wish all these uptown "shanghai posters" would just stay up there, if you want a five star restaurant then go will you! All these uptown or non NY'ers just don't get it. We go to Essex's cause we are hung over, still wearing the same outfit from the night before, smelling like the walk of shame, needing to just get drunk to forget about the night we just had, lighten up and shut up already!! Get crazy, rock your smudged makeup and your sunglasses dance and drink and wait for table like everyone else and just have some good ole LES NYC Brunch fun! Essex's we love you!

We were a party of 8 and they were quick to seat us and were wonderful in helping with recommendations from what is quite an expansive brunch menu! Their $ 16 brunch definitely is definitely very attractive with entrees and 3 drinks included. 2 people in our group were running late but that didn't faze our server and this is inspite of a packed house! They even gave us a free drink coupon for the bar so that the table could be cleared for the next party.
I definitely recommend Essex and am coming coming back with more people! Thank you for a wonderful Saturday brunch!

Essex was great overall! We had a party of 6 and then had to switch down to 4 and
switch to a different time if one opened up. Essex called us back to give us an
earlier spot on a Saturday night!! We had so much fun the atmosphere was vibrant
and kickin and you could still hear you table conversation. Very trendy, hot spot,
great decor! The food was excellent...apps and entrees and the drinks were delicious
and creative with a wide selection! The best part was the prices--very well priced
for such a place not expensive at all!!

Me and My wife went to this restaurant for dinner on Christmas day and we're not from NY. That being said we arrived at about a quarter to 6 for a 6pm reservation. It's a nice cozy atmosphere. The bar tender/waiter told us immedeately and rudely that they were closed when we checked-in until we told him we had a reservation. He looked like we were bothering him. We sat and wated at the bar until they opened and were seated at about 6:10, but the kitchen didn't open until 6:30. We were seated in a section that was apparently reserved for a party that we were not invited to so we moved. The waitress couldn't give recommendations because she was a vegitarian (but she and the hostess were the nicest people there, but no common sense). The food took forever to arrive and wasn't that great. The check took even longer (about 40 min.) and the waitress didn't look twice or say "thanks for comming out", "its not you its me", or "I hope you die", or anything as we left. The staff acted like they were all millionares and this was just a part-time gig and I should be so glad that I was graced with their presence.
Also while we were there a chick slipped and hurt her neck on the floor and had to be taken to the hospital, guess the floors are also slippery.
Long and short, don't waste your time people at the DMV are friendler.

So I USED to LOVE this place! This was the brunch spot I took out of towners, friends loved going there. Lately however their service has gotten worse and worse. The first step down hill was two times ago where the waitress was really rude and refused to give my mother and I butter, she claimed they were out. Other tables had butter, she was really snotty about it and just would not bring us butter. Then the next time I attempted to make reservations for mothers day about 2 weeks inadvance. The person who answered the phone was beyond nasty, basically telling me I was dumb for even expecting to get a table. The place is good but not more then two weeks for a reservation good. The last time I went there the service and the food was awful. By the time the server decided to bring the food it was too cold to eat. It was awful! Then my last attemp to go there, and again the person who makes the reservation was unbearbly RUDE. Ok your booked but you dont have to be nasty. This place is soo not worth it.

Took my parents to Essex for Christmas Brunch and we all thought that it was spectactular. The bloody Marys took the sting off a day with the family and our server managed to have my parents, who are very picky, smiling throughout. The menu has something for everyone, including vegetarian and vegan options for me. The dinner menu looks really creative too. I will be back.

I can't speak to the Brunch - but a friday night!! YUM!!!
My boyfriend and I ordered the blackened catfish and scarfed it down in a matter of minutes. (We both had empty plates and burned our mouths because it was so hot)! But it was probably the scallion hash or shrimp that made us eat faster.

After our meal - we ordered the peanut butter *sigh* pie. YUM. We loved Essex. It's not cheap for dinner, but it's downright delicious. Service was "OK" but not stellar. Even when they weren't that busy.

I was looking for a place to have a nice affordable B-day brunch. After an extensive research, I visited Essex. FYI looked all over the city: UES, Chelsea, Meatpacking, West Village, etc. Dave and Morton, managers, helped make a reservation. We were a party of 13 but the numbers went up, considering the fact that brunch usually has a huge turnover, they were nothing but accommodating to the changes. As soon as we sat down our waitress offered us beverages. Service was executed in a timely and friendly manner, fulfilling our expectations. The Brunch menu is very extensive and the food is ?quality food?. Drinks were excellent, our waitress made sure we all had drinks at all times. Service was not obtrusive or high pressure; on the contrary they made us feel very comfortable and welcome. Coming from a Hospitality background I definitely recommend Essex for Brunch. Great food, excellent drinks, soundless-efficient service and nice atmosphere. I will be back!

A.) NO NOTIFICATION THAT ALL PARTIES HAVE TO ARRIVE BEFORE SEATED (NOT EVEN IN THEIR EMAIL OR OVER THE PHONE) So when my party was 90% arrived (1 person came late), they wouldn't even seat the other 5 down. I had to change my reservation and tell my friend not to come in order to be seated.
B.) NO BREAD PLATES! They do not even bring out bread plates when we are offered bread...where do we eat, put the bread on the table and spread butter on it? Crumbs everywhere that will get on the clothes....and when we do ask for bread plates, it is as if it had never occurred to the wait staff to give both bread and plates at the same time!
C.) 3 DRINK DEAL MISCOMMUNICATION! We were told we can have three drinks, even the waitres say we can have alcoholic (with juice as substitute), coffee or tea. We were not told we had to stick with one drink. When my friend ordered a coffee, he was charged! Only when we brought to the attention to the waitress that she wasn't clear were we comp'ed....
D.) FOOD IS COLD. We waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive, And when it did arrive, it was cold!

An average of $16-$18 for brunch is very cheap...AND the food is at most, average. I do not see how much more delicious the food is compared to other restaurants (without alcohol specials) and the atmosphere is ROWDY. The restaurant is a place for all people to dine, not someone's living room where you take your noise to other patrons. Somehow the wait staff seem to encourage that behavior.

I also think the behavior of the wait staff and hostess as below par. I ate in over 20 countries across Europe and Asia and no restaurant is as horrible in terms of customer service than Essex. Too bad the hostess didn't know I am a travel cuisine writer. Essex will NOT get a good review!

Probably the only good reviews that are on here are people that are New Yorker wannabe's because face it, a true New Yorker will not put up with this type of attitude and behavior, let alone treatment.

My cousin took me here before moving to NYC two years ago and i loved it!! We went for brunch and the service was amazing (topping off water AND mimosa's). I wasn't even a brunch person at this time! Now i go on average once a week (sometimes for a drink at night, not always for the brunch)

Since moving to the city I have basically become obsessed with it. I treat it like a favorite band, (i actually thought of this metaphor AT essex)-I get extremely excited just being there. The atmosphere is awesome - the building itself is so spacious for NYC standards with extremely high ceilings and great music. And the people who eat there are down to earth and hilarious. I see repeat customers all the time since I bunch myself into the "i am a regular" group.

This is the perfect place to bring guests who come to visit because there isn't anything like the $16 brunch special (3 drinks that most of the time turn into unlimited) anywhere else (my friends look for places that could compare in other cities where they live). The menu is unique and the portions are satisfying (I always have leftovers with the burger and mexican matzah brei).

People sometimes write reviews of Essex and mention a long wait with a reservation. I have had that happen (where it is an extra 1/2 hour wait), but they always compensate with a free round of mimosa's and they really try their hardest. It would be a perfect world if the servers rushed out groups of friends after their meals and 3 beverages to ensure everyone's reservation was on time......but you don't get rushed out....you get to enjoy the meal & company. (well over my year its happened maybe 2 times but they give you a drink ticket for the bar downstairs haha)

I also have had the lobster dinner on thursdays with 1/2 priced drinks and that was amazing as well. I still haven't had the mussels, but i'm planning on going this week.

Final Notes
1. Perfect for Birthdays
2. Order french toast

I never write these things, but after last nights experience, I just want to make everyone aware of how horrible my friends and I were treated when we went out for a friend's birthday dinner. We were having dinner and drinks and everything was going fine, the food was good and, since the place was not too crowded, service was OK. The waitress brought us another round of drinks and ended up spilling all of the drinks on me and all over my bag, soaking the bag and the contents in it. The waitress apologized and said this round was on her. Thinking more than just the drinks she spilt should be on her, I decided to not make a huge deal of it and ruin the birthday dinner. We then ordered a shot for the birthday girl and the waitress bought out one for everyone. Thinking that it was on the house because of what had just happened, we gladly accepted them. When we got the bill though, we realized she had charged us for all 6. Again not making a big deal, we paid the bill and went on our way. While we were standing outside of Essex, deciding where to go next, another waitress (who was not serving us) came outside and screamed at the top of her lungs so that everyone on the street would turn around and look at us, ?15%, all you are f@*% leaving is 15% and went back inside. I have NEVER been more embarrassed in my life. We were not going to make a big deal of the situation at all and then this person starting yelling at us about the tip we left our waitress who just spilt 6 glasses of sangria on me and did nothing but buy us a round of drinks (and we actually left 17% which is more than enough considering what had happened). We then went in to speak with the manager who just gave us a comp card for the next time we came in (which will be never after this!) and did not offer to pay to clean my bag or even speak to the women who just embarrassed us! Now I see why Essex gets such bad reviews, their customer service is horrible!!

I had dinner @ Essex last night (Monday Night). Essex featured $ 1.00 Oysters and half price drinks. I started with the oysters, my friends had the crabcake and the smoked trout. For the main course, I had the wasabi-crusted salmon, while my friends had the baby lamb chops and grilled swordfish. All of our dishes were excellent. The service was terrific and all of the waitresses looked great in their Essex black uniforms. We all shared an order of potato pancakes which were outrageous. I had one of their new house cocktails called the Green Zinger ( Green Tea Vodka, Pimm's & Lime). I strongly recommend it.
For dessert the table shared the Molten Chocolate Cake and the Apple Tart.
We really had a great time and when the check came, we were all shocked at the low, low prices..Essex is serving uptown food at downtown prices...I highly recommed Essex Restaurant.

I was visitng my friend in NYC and he suggested we go to Essex for Brunch. We didn't have a reservation so when we arrived we were told an hour to hour and a half wait. My friend and I were fine with that since we found seats at the bar. The mimosas were only $3. We started making friends with the manager and bartender so the time went by fast. Finally about an hour and a half later we got our table. Our waitress Judith (french) was awesome. She was so nice. The food was great. You can't beat $16 (includes food and 3 mimosa). I will definitely go back when I return to NYC. Next time though I will make a reservation.

I had a terrific experience at Essex! I went for brunch last Sunday, and got there a little before twelve. The waitress served up a delicious latte while we waited for the clock to strike noon so we could have some drinks. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was exciting, and the space itself was gorgeous. We had a really sweet waitress who was most attentive to our needs even though there were many other customers. I am definitely coming back for dinner!

I had a horrible experience here. Besides the fact that the food was inedible, they advertised their brunch to include 3 alcoholic beverages. However, because we were there before noon, they could not serve us alcohol, but still charged the full fare (which was more than usual because it was Mother's Day). When we complained about their dishonest advertising, thinking we should not pay the full price, the manager was extremely rude and condescending, telling us it is "common knowledge" that restaurants can't serve alchohol before noon, and that we couldn't stay at the table since they had people waiting. She told us we could sit at the bar for our drinks, even though the bar was completely full with nowhere to sit. I don't mind not having the drinks, but we should not have been charged the full price, and the manager's attitude was unexceptable. Clearly customer service is not a concern for them. Some advice: don't ruin your Sunday at this place - terrible food, terrible service, and a terrible time!

the host and hostess at essex is probably the rudest i've ever encountered in a restaurant. they both ignored me several times by physically turning their backs to me and not responding to a simple "excuse me." i waited almost 45 minutes past my quote time, and they kept telling me i was "next" in line. not exactly the case... once we were seated the food was good, but it wasn't worth the rude treatment by the host and hostess.

As someone who waitressed in a very busy establishment for 5 years, I know that no matter how under pressure you are courtesy and manners should always be paramount in this industry. To say the service at this overcrowded, overbooked excuse for a restaurant was appalling would be a compliment. After enquiring on the wait for a table for Sunday brunch without a reservation, the open-mouthed-gum-chewing host rolled her eyes and told us it would be an hour. We decided to give it a chance as we'd heard the food was delicious. Eventually after 80 minutes we were squished into our table upstairs and had the menu's literally dumped on the table in front of us. (......Enter offensively rude french waitress) We asked for a beer and a mojito and she responded by pointing to the "3 Free Mimosas/screwdrivers/bloody Marys" on the Menu. We told her that we would happily pay for the drinks that we wanted and were told that she "was too busy to go and get them" and that we'd "have to take one of those". On ordering his burger well-done my boyfriend was met with a look of disgust and "you do know that will take longer?". Unbelievable. The food did take a while to arrive but the burgers were excellent. Our drinks were never refilled nor were we asked once if we'd like another. We usually enjoy coffee but as soon as we ate we were happy to vacate this hole and forget this horrendous experience. After deliberately not tipping to make a point to this obnoxious excuse for a waitress she had the downright AUDACITY to march over to our table and ask "was their a problem with the service?". Nice food but absolutely NOT worth it. Don't ruin your day by going here.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I read one of these reviews and almost choked! The review said they were rude when on the contrary the waitresses and bartenders are EXTREMELY nice!!! The bus boys and hostess are a bit standoffish, however, all of the bartenders are sweet, friendly and generous (they make mean martinis, but then again all their drinks are good!!!) The food is simply divine!!! Try the mac n cheese and you are in a state of bliss, they have a scallop and roasted peach/watermelon salad, a Tillapia cerviche. . .delish, chicken, fish (I've had Tilapia and mahi mahi) crabcakes . . .the lobster mash . . .. are great!!!! Who can beat the all you can eat mussels???? Or, the $1-$1.50 mussels????. . . they still get 5 stars in my book and of the many patrons I have referred there! Oh yes, the prices are also extremely reasonable for both food and drinks (great drinks). They also play great music and I have met several interesting and nice people! ....the ONLY bad thing I can say about this place is that it needs a better restroom. . .only two stalls and often missing toilet paper.

We had reserved a private party space from 9pm onwards. When we arrived promptly at 9pm, Essex had neglected to reserve the space, despite having taken down our credit card information to do so. We waited over 2 hrs until the space was clear. The managerial staff and hosts were unprofessional, rude, inconsiderate and unacceptable. NOT RECOMMENDED.

We had reservations for 4 people for brunch and were looking forward to it, as friends been there before and said they loved it. We arrived 15 minutes late for our appointment and were seated pretty soon.

The food was very good and came relatively fast, we were having great time despite the fact that we all pretty much strained our throats as it was unbearably loud upstairs. So much so, that I couldn't help to wonder if I was going to walk out of there half deaf.. And kept thinking that maybe they could install some sound absorbing panels on the walls or on the ceiling.. Since noise was expected as everywhere in Manhattan, I kinda just waited to get out and prayed that I keep my hearing ability intact.

But then came the waitress (about 1hr and 15 mins after we sat down and about 10 mins after we finished eating) and said literally "I am sorry, this table is reserved, could you guys?...? And she motioned towards the stairs... And while we kind of stared at her in awe she placed some free drink tickets on the table, and mumbled something like, ?you can use these..?

Now, would I want to go back again? Absolutely not. Did it ever occur to the restaurant management that 3 free drinks per person is NOT the only thing they are selling? I don't want to be rushed out of a place, where I haven't finished my coffee.

And if there is a 75 minutes limit per table at Essex, shouldn?t I be forewarned in advance?

This place has the best brunch in NYC. The atmosphere is great - music, service, ambiance - EVERYTHING. The food is good and the waitress keeps your glass filled with Mimosas. I would reccommend reservations b/c this place gets packed. I went for the first time this past weekend and I'm already talking about making reservations for this Sunday.

I went to Essex for brunch while visiting a friend and was very impressed at the service and the food. While it can get kind of cramped with the amount of people that are seated at once (tables were zig zagging everywhere) the service, food, and music make it worth the table bumps. I had the poached eggs with sauteed scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly and were the perfect finish to my trip to New York. My friend had the lobster benedict which was also fantastic. There was a large crowd of people waiting to be seated, but we made reservations in the cab on the way there walked right in. Service was quick precise.

Pros: Excellent food and beverages

Cons: Sometimes cramped seating

Last night, which was a tuesday, my friends and I went to Essex for the very famous "all you can eat mussels and fries" for $14!!!!! Not only that wonderful deal, but the drinks are half price until 9. That's everything, cocktails, wine. etc. The server was so friendly and pleasant. The food was incredible. My friends opted for the actual dinner menu and ordered the crab cake, the potato pancake with arugula and goat cheese the duck and of course all you can eat mussels. The mussels and fries just kept coming and so will we!!

I had a fun girls' brunch here today--bottomless mimosas (the waitress just kept filling them!) and good food. I had the potato pancakes with apples in honey cream sauce and shitake/spinach/black bean hash. The service was good--we didn't have to wait too long for a table, and there was not any pressure to give up our table (then again, it might not have been as crowded as it normally is on a Saturday--maybe because of the cloudy weather?)

I have been to Essex many times for both brunch and dinner, and every time I left thrilled. I have had various waitresses and every one was friendly and charming. The food is alway interesting (the Mexican Brei at brunch!!!) and it's always a great deal. The $16 brunch and $16 lobster dinner are just two examples. Even the drinks are inventive and delicious. Everyone should take a trip to Essex for both brunch and dinner. Always a fantastic experience!!

If you are looking for a saturday night atmosphere but at 12 pm afternoon, saturdays and sundays, look no further than Essex Bar. When you step in the place it makes you wonder if the party from last night is still going. Be prepared to wait at the bar for a while but time will fly by faster once you try the amazing bloody mary's and the electric mimoza. But all the wait will be worth it once you enter the food territory where the latin theme brunch will melt in your mouth over conversations with strangers. Also a great atmosphere to meet people. Regarding service, the wait staff is hip and friendly, not shy of joining your table over drinks. Me and my wife have made this place our own every weekend because the prices are unbeatable. For you girls out there make sure your meet the bartender, he might seem short but his drinks stand tall and in a record time of making them.

I met a few friends here after work for dinner on Thursday and had an excellent time. The booths downstairs provided a perfect, intimate setting for a group of 4-6 friends or co-workers. A pleaseant surprise was the half price Happy Hour (yes, Saketinis for $5). The food was also a fantastic value (I've paid double the price to have less inventive & less flavorful meals all over the city). I thought the ceviche was particularly delicious, as well as the calamari - had to order a second. We're already planning to return.

Add spice to your life by having dinner at Essex! We had dinner there on Tuesday night. The food and drinks were exceptional. The portions were huge. The waitress was very accommodating. 'We started with the tilapia ceviche. The potato pancakes were out of this world. The blackened catfish with shrimp was superb. We cannot wait to go back again.

There is not one good thing about this restaurant. If you are planning to go there for sunday brunch, just take your $16 out of your wallet, set it on fire, and then jump in front of a bus. Only that may be comparable to the misery that is a meal at this amateur, unoriginal, poorly executed excuse for a restaurant.

Pros: You don't have to go there.

Cons: Absolutely everything.
