Great service and food!

by Rubylen L. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,351

I took my husband here for his birthday and we loved it. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We had dinner with 4 other adults and 2 toddlers. We all enjoyed our meals and felt that with the amount of food we ordered that it was reasonable for NYC.

DELIZIOSO!!

by Italia1

Cascina is a wonderful restaurant! I've been there a couple times and every time I went I never had problems with the service or the food! I've met the owner and the manager and they are very nice people! I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone! They recently changed the pizza and it is not round anymore but it's long and you can have it in many choices! I love it very much and I will love to go back as soon as possible! The chef is also very sweet and the home made pasta and desserts are DELIZIOSI!
I LOVE IT!

LOVED IT!

by Harold995

I went to Cascina with my girlfriend recently and had an excellent meal. We started with an order of calamari and a salad and both were very good. For the main course, I had a delicious pizza while my girlfriend had the gnocchi, once again, both were delicious. The service was very good as was the wine list. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Avoid the Bruschetta, Be aware of the Service!

by MarkMunafo

Eat at your own risk, service was terrible, as was the bruschetta. We returned the bruschetta because it was half onion and it still appeared on the bill...go figure. I would stick to the pastas!

Save your money

by whatsup5

We chose this restaurant based on Citysearch review and were sadly disappointed. The food was mediocre at best and the waiter was obviously not into his job. The Caprese salad was way overpriced at $14 and came with hard unripened tomatos. We sent it back and were given another serving with better tomatos but I guess they will try and see what people will accept. The portions are small and the selections are limited and just ok. The wine list was extensive but nothing was under $32 a bottle. A glass of wine was $10. For the location there are several other restaurants in the area that deserve a 4-5 star rating but this is definately not one of them.

Celebrated a friend's birthday, the staff was very accomodating because we had people who were unable to make dinner but came out for the afterparty.
Food was great, service was terrific, and the place got packed as the evening went along. Definitely great to share, since their portions are nice, and a solid Italian restaurant that is great for larger parties.

Cons: service

GREAT SERVICE,AMAZING HOME MADE PASTA

by whitelion

My party for six last saturday night had the prefect visit at CASCINA. First of all, everybody was so nice. We arrived 20 minutes earlier than our reservation time and they kindly made room for us in ten minutes. Even though the place was jam packed, the server took his time with us, explainging what the specials of the day came with and how the prix fixe menu would save us money. He also helped us select a wine which was delicious,a Pinot noir from the north of Italy. I ordered an extra portion of Tiramasu to bring home to my husband just because it was the best I've ever tasted. I will surely be back at CASCINA. I couldn't imagine them ever having an off night unless maybe the chef was absent. Everybody was happy with their food, and on our way out we met other parties who were return customers and loved the place.

good job cascina

Great neighborhood Italian place!

by hubriis

We were back in NYC for our annual trip, just arrived Saturday night. We settled in at our hotel and then began the deliberation process of where to eat as we were both famished. The light bulb went off, and we remembered the place we'd tried the previous year that we'd really enjoyed. The problem was, we couldn't remember the name. However, we did have a general idea of where it was located. So, we bundled into our many, many layers and trekked out to conquer the streets in search of grub.

We got lucky and found it on the first try, back over on 9th. We entered to the incredible scent of a wood-burning oven, and asked if there were any seats available as we didn't have a reservation. Initially our hostess looked chagrined, but then made room for us on the first-floor next to a cute couple who were obviously on a first date ("So, what to do you like to do in your spare time? Any hobbies or skeletons in the closet that I should know about?" nervous twitter). I recalled the Montepulciano by the glass from the previous year and ordered that to start. I was drawn immediately to the pasta Bolognese as that is one of my favorites, until I saw that veal Saltimbocca was a special for the evening. My veal was melt-in-your-mouth amazing; I could have eaten it every day for the next week. My beau ordered the salmon on special and that, too, was amazing - rich and buttery and perfectly cooked. Sated, we left but not before I grabbed a business card to ensure that we never forgot the name of our lovely restaurant again!

We ended up back at Cascina the following Thursday, this time having booked a reservation through Open Table in advance. I again eyeballed the pasta Bolognese but went for the veal instead, this time is was veal Scallopine with lemon. We enjoyed this meal just as much as the previous one, and if we lived in the city I am sure we'd visit at least once a week. Ah well, we can dream of next year....

truly italian

by niceslow

i moved to nyc three months ago from northern california and stumbled onto CASCINA RESTAURANT my first night in town...there's nothing like good italian comfort food, which in addition to the friendly staff and fun-loving crowd keeps me coming back - sometimes a couple of times a week. i usually pull up a seat at the bar, where i'm greeted and treated like an old friend - what a refreshing treat in this big city. the food is consistently delicous and the kitchen is always accommodating when i ask for something special (not on the menu)
. i bring my family and friends here and i can't tell you how many times i've heard, "next time i'm in town, let's go back to CASCINA. we had so much fun there." definitely make this a group dinner, especially if you're celebrating a fun occassion like a birthday. the portions are generous and you'll definitely want to sample a bit of everything...it's the perfect place to enjoy your meal italian style. still, i love the place even when i'm all alone and often stop in for a plate of pasta orechiete with sausages and broccoli, a glass of wine and i almost always get a fresh tiramisu to go - i'm hooked! Enjoy and I'll see you there!

Went here with a large group of friends. We had a few bottlles of wine from the extensive wine list, all of which were excellent choices recommended by the manager.
The service in general was quite attentive without being bothersome. As far as the food, everyone was happy with their dishes. Everything was fresh served in a timely manner.

This was a great experience!

WARM PLACE,GREAT FOOD

by coyoteugly

Cascina Restaurant has everything I think is important in a restaurant. The staff makes me feel special, like they know me, and they are friendly and professional. The food is great, it tastes fresh and Home-Made. The service is very efficient. They have small tables and big tables, I once walked in without a reservation and within five minutes they had a table for me and 11 co-workers!!! The wine list is amazing.
It is a place I like bringing friends and family too...I am lucky to have this special place in my neighborhood.

Pros: FOOD,SERVICE

A REALLY ITALIAN EXPERIENCE

by fedaia

I don't usually do these, but recently I went to CASCINA RISTORANTE for dinner and had such a nice time that I wanted to share it. I was most struck by the friendliness of the staff. I was greeted at the door and at the table with genuine enthusiasim. Our server was funny and knowledgeable, he consistendly checked on us and was helpful both with our questions about the menu and for suggestions of places to go after dinner.

The food was great as well, fresh pasta like I've never had any where else and a great homemade tiramisu'.

Basically I can't wait to go back so I can try everything else on the menu.

Restaurant Motto: If you are not happy, too bad we don't need you!

by DWantuch

We went to this restaurant at the recommendation of our conceirge. It was a good thing they gave us the Open Table confirmation, as the restaurant did not have it in their system. It didn't look like it would make a difference as the restaurant was only 1/2 full (8:00 on a Saturday - should have been a clue!). They placed our party of 7 on the top floor. We were the only table occupying that room the entire time we were there. The service was horrendous. Once we got the food, which was mediocre at best, we never saw our waiter again. After we ate the meal we sat for 15 minutes with empty plates in front of us. Four bus boys stood 10 feet away the entire time and avoided our stares. When I asked to speak to the manager, they suddenly scurried to clean the table. The manager's attitude toward our poor service was shocking for a restaurant in this price range. His response to me was "Well, 90% of our customers are happy." Not surprising, they were attempting to add a 20% gratuity to my party of seven. To me the food was not worth taking the chance of a very poor dining experience. Not to mention, the poor attitude the management had on the restaurant customers.

Tasty pizza

by tobey123

I've stumbled upon this restaurant coming back from a meeting in the area. I was running late, so my friend and I decided to stay in the area for dinner. Walking down the street we looked in and saw and big centrally placed stone pizza oven. Well that was a good clue. The pizza was delicious. The crust was thin and crisp, the kind that stay straight when you pick it up... the tomato sauce was delicious and the fresh mozzarella just great. Fresh basil just gave it the finishing touch and a great aroma. It is worth to make a trip just for the pizza. I'm definitely coming back.

Pros: Great pizza

Great thin crust pizza and lasagna

by albalnyc

I read many of the reviews on this restaurant, and the bad ones scared me, but we took the leap and hoped for the best. We had a birthday dinner for 17 and this was one of the few places that could accommodate us (uh oh). I'm sure there are better, and I've been to a few, but there is absolutely nothing to avoid here. The food was sensational, the decor was lovely and the service was really great. If you need top tier ambience, a super fashionable address, or a too-cool crowd, go somewhere else. For everything else, you will like if not love this restaurant.

The top of authentic Italian on Ninth Avenue

by cpharis

A very good place to eat. The pizza is great: very thin crust, light on the sauce, and covered with fresh ingredients. Pastas are also very good. The atmosphere is also a notch above the other Italian restaurants on Ninth Avenue. Great service, even though it can run into the 'Italian' mode sometimes (they like to leave you alone.) Very friendly and accomodating. I once saw the manager send entrees back to the kitchen because the table had not yet finished the appetizers, and it looked as if the entrees were fresh and new when they did bring them out. The obviously care about the quality of their food.

Pros: Thin crust Roman style pizza

I was very DISSATISFIED with the service from the very beginning.
My family and I went there for the first and the very LAST TIME. The hostess was very disreputable and looked altogether totaly disinterested and lazy, the table was too small and unstable and the atmosphere
was unpleasant and I would never recommend this place to any of my friends.

I proposed to my girlfriend at this beautiful rustic italian restaurant. The staff paid every attention to detail to make this once in a lifetime moment special. The food had bold flavors with fresh ingredients and lavish portions. The wine selection was excellent and I can't say enough about the staff.
And the waiter didn't forget to bring to the table an homemade tiramisu' with a candle on top for my girlfriend.
My girlfriend was so please and happy with everything and I can't wait for my next visit.

Good job cascina.

amazing wine list, excellent managment

by nylion

i have been in Cascina Restaurant for the fist time 2 days ago. It was my husband's b'day and i wanted to celebrate it in a very unforgetable way.
I checked out the wine list. Too many wines, didnt know which one pick up.
Then the very kind young manager came to me and understood that i needed help.
He was great and helpfull.
We picked up an uncredible Amarone Bertani 1976, the same year of my husband...
He extoled the wine from the bottle to the decanter. He did a good job and explaned us the process of the wine. I learned more.
So, now i know that if i have to choose a VERY GOOD BOTTLE OF WINE, the only thing i have to do is.... GO TO CASCINA RESTURANT!!!!

The restaurant has a very good managment with a particular attention for the guest. Congratulation!!!!

Pros: wine list and managment

Very Disappointing

by tuliothx

We went to Cascina for lunch on a Saturday on the recommendation of the CitySearch rating and what a disappointment that was. First, the waiter was annoyed when we asked him questions about the menu. As for the food, the lobster salad was unimpressive, the anti-pasto was mainly Oscar Meyer cold cuts, and the broccoli soup needed lots of salts to make it flavorful. Then, the cream that came with the coffee was curled. And to top it all off, the waiter got into a loud shouting match with the restaurant manager.

Pros: Door attendant pleasant and courteous

Cons: Bland food. Excitable waiters/management. Curled Milk.

by ninaluznina

I went in this restaurant few times and always I found the service and the food really good.
I had the most simple Italian dish as spaghetti al pomodoro.
You can find this in every Italian restaurant in NYC but nobody can beat the taste and the freshness of the one had at Cascina. Bravo.

Pros: Traditional Italian

Cons: none

by lupo1956

If you never been in Italy, you should try this restaurant. The food, the atmosphere, the friendly service and the Italian managers make you feel just like in Italy.
We had a wonderful appetizer as fried zucchini blossom flowers stuffed with mozzarella in fresh tomato sauce.....superb. After we had sea bass with olives, potatoes and Vermentino wine sauce......delicious.
We heard comments from other tables about how good is the pizza.
Avoid the noisy crowd from the pre-theatre.
Wonderful wine list..... all Italian wines.

Pros: Food, service

Cons: Noisy pre-theatre

Utterly Terrible

by darthvader01

Seriously, I don't understand where all these glowing reviews are coming from. This place was awful. It looks like a cute neighborhood place but the food is beyond underwhelming. Every dish was terrible - stuffed mushrooms were leathery and tasteless, mixed greens were limp and lifeless, calamari was clearly freshly defrosted and underdone. The stuffed chicken breast was a deep fried chicken tender with a bit of spinach (unseasoned) on the inside, served with a slice of lemon.

Honestly, there are a million neighborhood places on 9th Avenue better than this one. Don't waste your time.

Pros: Close to theaters, cheap

Cons: Atrocious food

I went to this restaurant few years ago and I was not to much impressed.
I return for dinner last week and I notice an impressive improvement overall.
We order a bottle of nice red wine from a wonderful wine list and the food following was amazing.
We finish our dinner with a smooth grappa di Moscato, I never saw in other restaurant such a huge selection.
Bravo.

I have had almost all the pasta dishes on this menu and I recommend all. THe eggplant appetizer is one of the hidden gems; it's actually baked in the brick oven, just great. The wine selection is spectacular. Really great food served in a cozy, friendly atmosphere. I know we will be there, you should too.

I've been here 2X and completely satisfied both times. The food was great - had risotto, liguini with clams, tasted a peice of salmon dish, and have had a couple desserts (all very delicious and great endings to my meals). Next time I'm feeling Italian I will not hesitate to come back. The service has been warm and friendly too. I thoroughly enjoyed my meals.

MY FAVORITE!!!!

by creative_employee

I LOVE THIS PLACE. My friend and I go here about once a week, and sometimes twice on the weekends. Bottom line, the food is fantastic, the owners/servers are friendly and you feel welcomed. The owners are also straight from Italy and the wine is harvested in their own Italian vineyard. If you like white wine with a hint of sweetness, I recommend the Frustanerra. In the beginning, you are given bread which is served with delicious olive oil and I find that it's a nice compliment to the wine. I have had almost everything on this menu, but actually not the pizza. I have noticed the rave reviews for it. Judging by the delicious aroma of the brick-oven, I'm sure it lives up to it's name. GO HERE!

Pros: Welcoming and Delicous!

Cons: I haven't encountered any and I've been here at least 20 times.

Great food, bad service

by sharopooks

We went here because we're checking out places w/ private rooms for an event we're planning. Cascina's cuisine, cozy atmosphere & private rooms seemed like a possibility but this place has no idea how to treat customers considering having their event there. When we arrived, either the chef or one of the cooks was sitting outside - he was very friendly &, later, he directed me to additional restrooms downstairs - he was the most personable one there all night! Our waiter was busy w/ other tables for a while after we were seated, so as we sat looking around w/ our menus closed, a bunch of other waiters & a manager stood by looking at us. None of them reassured us that our waiter would be coming soon, or offered to get us water, drinks, bread, nothing. Our waiter wasn't too friendly at first, even after we disclosed we were considering having an event there. It took a few visits to our table for him to be warm & personable (maybe he was frazzled by the few table he had?! Oh well, better friendliness later than never, I guess...). After the meal, another waiter showed us the upstairs private rooms but he didn't know anything about rates, policies, etc. The manager started to walk upstairs & we thought, great, he'll talk to us all about it. But the manager saw us, turned around & went back downstairs! Even after seeing that we were interested in renting the room! We were appalled, why should we chase after this guy to find out information about having a party there?! He saw us & IGNORED us! Even the hostesses were bored outta their skulls, standing lifelessly & saying nothing as we left. Do they staff this place w/ their "B Team" on Sunday nights?! All that aside, the food was good - delicious pizza, tasty specials. If I were starving & happened to be in the area during a blizzard or some other reason to go inside, MAYBE I'd dine here again (my husband refuses to), but it's doubtful. There are many other places in this city that know a thing or two about great service.

Pros: Pizza, Specials, Private rooms (though no one talked to us about 'em...)

Cons: SERVICE, MANAGEMENT

Could Have Been Better

by jet075

We went here based on the location near the theater, but it wasn't as good as expected. The atmosphere was really great though. We ate upstairs but the downstairs room was very cozy and cute, plus they had outdoor seating. The bread was delicious but the rest of the food just seemed like average italian. Plus my noodles stuck together which was odd.

In the ultimate tourist trap area, Cascina offers a respite from bad food, high prices, and noise. The outdoor seating is excellent in the summer but the interior is cozy, quaint, and warm as well. Moderate prices, especially for the simply prepared, fresh, and tasty pasta dishes. And the bread, usually an afterthought, was very good. Very cute waiter too.

Pros: convenient location, pasta, bread

Cons: entrees were a bit pricey, service ok but not very attentive.

So many better places around the block

by zorgclyde

I went to this place because it was right near where my friend and I were going to a show later. I ordered the spinach ravioli and he a pizza. The ravioli was the better of the two, but the serving was tiny, and the skin a bit rubbery. The pizza was quite terrible. The vegetables on top was not seasoned at all, and tomato sauce blander than the supermarket kind. Service was fast. I am puzzled by the good reviews. With all the better Italian restaurants nearby, I don't understand how this place stays in business.

Pros: fast, convenient location

Cons: food, overpriced

Marginal/Mediocre Food

by anneperkin

We read good things about this restaurant but the food was very mediocre. It took way too long to be served, they seemed to be unable to handle the crowd they had, and the chicken we ordered tasted microwaved and the mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box. The pasta was also nothing special. In a city with great Italian restaurants, it was a real disappointment.

I love this neighborhood cozy Italian place. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is just great. I love the food even more. The pizza is amazing. The steak is great. I also had some pastas and loved them. Desserts are amazing too, especially the home made tiramisu.

The brick pizza oven gives the restaurant character and adds to the homey decor. The wines from their own label are great. The best part is, its all very affordible, so you can have great meals, close and often and it won't break your bank. Oh, that's refreshing.

We loved our pre theater dinner so much, we decided to drop in after the theater and have some dessert and wine. The tiramisu was out of this world delicious. I never had tiramisu like that. We also had some homemade mixed berry tart, which was absolutely amazing. They have great selection of dessert wines, very nice. We had a great time, talking about the play in a nice, cozy, peaceful environment.

The dinner pre-theater was excellent too. I tried the fish, that everyone is raving about - it is that good. My husband had the veal and loved it, my friends had pastas and pizza. Everyone loved their foood. The after theater dessert was calm and divine. This close from the theater, Cascina is a real find. We love it and will be back frequently. We have a play date next month!!! We all recommend it strongly.

Pros: Homemade dessrets, Fabulous Food, Wonderful atmosphere

Fabulous Pizza!!!

by pat_poo

We are theater lovers, so we dine pre-theater often and in the theater distric it's hard to find a reasonably priced, cozy restaurant, that doesn't serve mediocre food and doesn't push you out the door. Well, my friend recommended Cascina and what a delight!!! It's a warm and inviting with heavy wooden tables and a wood burning brick oven.

They serve traditional country-style Italian, kind of my grandma's cooking, very authentic and flavorful. The portions are generous. The pizza from the brick oven is wonderful, so is the fish. Try the delicious homemade deserts. I loved the pear tart. Everything is very reasonably priced and delicious. Try the wines, really good and a good value.

Lastly, the service is very friendly and fast, not pushy. You won't feel rushed out. This is our new pre-theater tradition. We've already been back 3 times and will be back for more. Truely wonderful!

Pros: Wonderful food & wine, Great service, inexpensive

Nice Pre-theater

by amanda_

I got a gift certificate, so I took me husband here before going to the theater. We had a wonderful experience. Everyone was so friendly and nice. The hostess seated us on a balcony in the back. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with cozy, rustic feel to it. There is a actual wood-burning oven in the middle of the main room. The pizza comming out of that over is amazing. My husband had the striped bass, and I see some reviewer wrote about it already, but he raved about it. I tried some myself and I agree, delicious. The wine was very good and fairly inexpensive. The service was quick. We were ready right in time for the theater 2 blocks away. We will be back. I highly recommend it especially for pre-theater. It's hard to find an affordable, decent place that won't rush you out, well here's one!

Pros: excellent fish, great pizza, quick service

Go pre-theater/Great wine

by carnie7

On a friend's recommendation, we tried to go for the pre-theater dinner here recently and had a wonderful meal. I agree with most of the reviewer, I had their solomon with white wine and loved it. My husband had the steak and really liked it. The wait staff was pleasant with a no-nonsense attitude and great wine recommendation. The restaurant has its own wine lable and terrifc wines at that. The ambience is another plus; cozy and romantic. We will be back. I highly recommend it.

Pros: Great food & wine, Friendly service, inexpensive

Romantic Retreat

by 1peter

I took my girlfriend to Cascina for Valentine's dinner and it delivered. The atmosphere is very cozy and romantic. The brick wood-burning oven stuck in the middle of the room gives it a rustic, pleasant feel. The food is superb. The pizza is great, the ossobuco phenomenal and the wine really great. The staff is wonderful, very friendly and knowledgable, especially about wines. The prices are friendly to your wallet. Overall, it's a great value all served up in a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. I highly recommend it!

Pros: Great food&wine, Nice decor, Good service
