Gotham Comedy Club

★★★★☆
Native New Yorkers Chris Mazzilli and Michael Reisman opened the original Gotham Comedy Club in May 1996 and it has proven to be a leader in the industry, bringing comics such as Dave Chappelle, Lewis Black and Colin Quinn (to name a few) to the stage. Gotham Comedy Club has become the backdrop for many TV shows and films such as Jerry Seinfeld's 2002 Miramax film "Comedian" and Larry David's pilot of "Curb Your Enthusiasm". In 2005 Gotham Comedy Club opened it's new 10,000 square foot flagship location providing New York with live performances from today's elite comedians. Located in a 1929 building next door to the historic Chelsea Hotel, the new Gotham Comedy Club draws upon the charm and ambiance of the 1920s to capture the spirit of an upscale theater environment. Comedy Central's Live At Gotham features the country's hottest comedians doing fresh stand-up here. Each week, a new host introduces up-and-coming comedians for an hour of original comedy. NBC's Emmy-nominated series Last Comic Standing brings dueling comedians to duke it out on Gotham Comedy Club's stage, the comedy venue where some of the nation's most notorious comedians began their careers.

I recently went to this comedy club and had a great time. The admission at the door was not overly excessive and the lineup of comics were great. The location is near some great restaurants so it is easy to catch a bite to eat right before or after the show. The club offers great seating no matter where you sit - for extra abuse sit in one of the two first rows, it makes it a memorable experience.

Gotham Comedy Club in New York City is a great place. I went to the club on a trip with a whole bunch of classmates, and everyone thought it excellent. The comics were hilarious and at least two of the comics that night were featured on "Comedy Central Presents". At the end of the show the staff actually handed out free tickets, which was a very nice gesture. The place itself is kind of cramped, but many clubs are. If you want to see some high quality stand up comedy, go to Gotham.

Generally they have multiple shows on the weekends and their is the standard 2 drink min and also admission. That aside, this is one of the cleanest comedy clubs I have been in and the decor provides a natural intimate vibe. It's in a great location that has a few bars and a restaurant that is on the same street and the bartender is very friendly as well.

PROS: Decor, staff
CONS: N/A

By far the absolute worst Comedy Club I have ever been to. Everything was great until the bouncers jumped me. Yea...thats right. I was with a "lively" audience and we were all laughing really hard. The bouncer. an older, taller man

What a bad experience I had at this Comedy Club. I have never been so humiliated in all my life. Everytime so one laughed we were asked to keep it down. The ""bouncers"" are a much of bullies - management should be ashamed of themselves. Bad experience....Bad Comedy Club. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Every chance I get I will let it be known that this place is terrible.

Gotham Comedy is by far my favorite comedy club in NYC. I've been several times and have always had a ball. Grant it some comedians are better than others, but overall the shows are always filled with lots of laughs. Also the food is pretty tasty. I've had the burger and it was quite delicious. \nI will definitely go back!

I've been to pretty much all the comedy clubs in the city and Gotham is probably the best. I've been there at least 5 times. It doesn't have that ""I'm in a garage"" look that most of the others have. The waitresses are very good - they come by often so we had 4 visits during the show. At the other clubs, I usually get just two, the minimum required by most places. I drink wine so I don't know about the watered-down drinks others wrote about. The reason I'm writing now is because they had a absolutely hilarious comedian on named Veronica Mosley. She had lots of different stuff but most memorable were her imitations of Rachel Ray and Martha Stewart. She only did about 15 minutes and I wish she was on longer. The rest of the show was Ian Bagg who was funny, but just talked to the audience and didnt have much material. All in, I had a great experience - always do at Gotham.

Pros: Nice clean club, very good wait staff, drinks reasonable

If you are going for comedy you will be thrilled with comedians like David The Voice Stein and April Booker. If you are coming for good drinks go elsewhere

I'm a relatively big comedy fan, averaging about 10 shows a year, more often at Carolines and Comix (and other venues), though. Last night was my first time at Gotham, so I was optimistic (and the tickets were free, that's how sad the ""talent"" was for the night - and yes, I know that's a common practice, but the place was half empty still). \n\nThe opening comic, whose name escapes me, was by an enormous margin the absolute worst comic I've ever seen/heard in my entire life. Her entire ""act"" consisted of asking couples in the front row details about their relationships. Naturally, the only people in the entire room laughing were these same people. The fact that this woman was booked in the first place speaks volumes about Gotham's management; the fact that they didn't boot her off stage 2 minutes into her ""act"" speaks even more. The fact that they gave my group (7 people, not heckling at all) the evil eye, and subsequently kicked us out speaks even more.\n\nI should state the reason my group was being ""loud"" (other guests weren't looking at us, we were whispering amongst ourselves like all the other disappointed comedy fans) was because 1. the comic sucked something aweful, and 2. I ordered a vodka/tonic, which I had to send back TWICE because there was absolutely zero alcohol in it.\n\nGotham apparently employs shitty bartenders, shitty talent management, and even shittier fat old guy ""security"" which suffers from an epic case of small dick syndrome. I'm pretty tolerant (especially when booze are involved), but my experience last night was absolutely unbelievable. I will never be going back, and I implore others to avoid this place, for their own sake. Worst management, worst employees, worst comics.\n\nAnal_yst

Pros: It is in the heart of the city it has world class comedians

Cons: stronger drinks s place would be filled with drunks. I kid!

Jay Mohr and his openers were very funny and all did a great set. Several months earlier Judy Gold was horrible. So, choose your performer carefully.\r\n\r\nThe Ketel One martini that I ordered was either made horribly wrong or they used watered-down vodka. I sent it back and told them to put some vodka in it. It came back worse. It could not be consumed.\r\n\r\nThe waitress picked up the un-touched drink, but she still charge me $13.50 for it.\r\n\r\nMy date ordered a reisling. Their reisling tastes like white-vinegar.\r\n\r\nBad waitress, bad bartender, unreliable comedy shows. If you go, just order beers for your drinks, because everything else is nasty.

Second trip to Gotham Comedy Club and boy, oh boy, was it good! My first time was almost TOO much fun (how often can you say that?!) so I NEVER thought my second trip would live up to my first time! It was amazing! Gotham manages a tight ship: staff was friendly, tables were clean and spacious (nothing like you'd expect from a NY comedy club!), and the security was undoubtedly the BEST! You get the MOST FOR YOUR MONEY -- there was an annoying (probably too intoxicated) group of 30-year-olds at the table next to us. They kept talking amongst themselves which amounted to a terribly distracting and CONSTANT murmur while the comedians were performing. They were kindly asked to quite down (by the suit-and-tie security staff) or to take their conversation outside of the showroom so as not to ruin the show for the other customers. Five minutes later--while the customers from several tables were exchanging glances about this talkative group--the security guy came back over and politely, professionally, and quietly insisted that they leave. This place REALLY cares about it customers and REALLY appreciates their business. After all, the LAST thing anyone wants to spend money on is a bad night out on the town. This was perfect.

This is by far one of the best comedy clubs I've ever been to in the world. It's great that they have created a reputation by having a strong repertoire of comedians that have and do still perform there. I personally have seen some big names there (Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, anyone?). And the security is one of the best things about the place. Unlike SOME NY clubs, this one respects ALL of its customers- not just the obnoxious ones. There is nothing worse than going to a place to enjoy the show and have to tolerate all of the drunk noisy idiots. So yea, if you disrupt the show for others, they will throw you out. Much appreciated, actually. In general, bar far the best place to go for what really feels like an intimate time with some of the best comedians in the world. I go every time I'm in the city, and every time I end up in tears laughing so hard.

Save yourself, don't believe the hype. Maybe a famous comedian performed there- ONCE- when he wasnt famous!\r\n\r\nI went and it was just the worst experience ever. Apparently this place has a '' NO HAVING FUN"" policy since they will kick you out for no apparent reason.\r\n\r\nThere are PLENTY of good comedy clubs in NYC that will happily let you spend your money and treat you like a customer. This place was......A JOKE. Dont do it to yourself.\r\n\r\n\r\n

I went to Gotham on my vacation last week and had a great time. Our hotel told us about it and we decided to go even though we weren't that familiar with the comics. So awesome! The openers were really good and got us going and the headliner made me laugh harder that i had in a long time. It was a little crowded but once the show started i was laughing too hard to care. the liqour selection was good and i liked that we could order food there too. I will definitley go back.

By far the best comedy experience i've had in years. The first performer, a woman named Jessica Kirson, was hilarious. our entire party had a great time. The other comics were funny as well and the MC (a guy from the south) was great. we're beer drinkers so i cant comment on the drinks but the service was good. Gotham is more like a nightclub than most comedy clubs. No dark black walls and dirty bathrooms here. great date spot. highly recommended.

12/8/07 11:45 pm show. Good comedy can be insightful, analytical, sophisticated, philosophical, and cutting edge. U won't find that here. This show is exactly the same as the Comedy Central's show w/ the stand up comedians. I never found Comedy Central's show funny & I did not find the show here to be funny either.\r\nThe reason I chose to attend this show is because of all the positive citysearch reviews & because the club had a late show at 11:45. Well, I vehemently disagee w/ all these positive reviews.\r\nThe headliner was a large woman who compared herself to Rosie O'Donnell because they have about the same body shape. She declared that she didn't like her material & that she wasn't going to do it & she didn't care because she didn't have to pay the admission fee. I was thinking that u got to be kidding me. Nope. This was confirmed when she started asking audience members where they were from. I really cannot stand it when comedians do this. Who cares where the audience members are from??????? What does that have to do w/ anything??? This is simply a device comedians use to waste time. In other words, they are just wasting my time. Should have walked out.\r\nI normally don't write reviews, but I felt I had speak up. I registered w/ citysearch specifically so that I can write this review.

Don't go. The bouncers are low lives from Staten Island and do all they can to push you around. A friend of mine was sick and upon leaving the show we were treated like criminals. We were threatened that they had called the police because we hadn't paid our bill at which point i reminded them that we informed the front desk that we left our money on the table. A horrid experience and I would suggest you avoid this place, even if it's free! Terrible treatment. We were told ""that they called the police and that this is how they do it in New York""! As a journalist for an entertainment magazine, trust me this is not how it's done in New York - at least not by the professional establishments.

I went there to see Gregg Rogel and had a great time. We were a party of 6 and were well taken care of. I love to laugh and I had a ball. My friends want to make it a monthly thing. Thanks Gotham. Oh by the way thanks to the Gotham for keeping order in the show. There were several drunk spectators there and they were spoken to. That settled them down.

OK, so me and my buddy went to a show on Thurs. Nov. 8th, I have to admit, we were kinda sketchy after reading some on line reviews, however, after attending, those of you who wrote about the management being rude and ""not allowing laughter"" are so in the wrong. In my life, I have learned that human beings don't know that they are idiots in the world. That is one of the reasons you are idiots-because of your ignorance. If a manager has to come to you and tell you to shut the hell up, its because you should shut the hell up. When we went there were some dumb, insecure people who were trying to get attention on themselves from their ""heckling"" and I just wanted to kick their behinds. The comics are used to this kind of audience and so rightly put them in their place, which sparked new material and made the entire room roar in laughter. So, if your reading these reviews and thinking its a sketchy joint, don't listen to these idiots who wrote those un-called for comments about the management. It was an amazing show and I would totally go again, but this time I would spill my cocktail on the dumb idiots who almost ruined the show by interrupting the comics in the middle of their super hilarious peformance. By the way it was one of the most cleanest bathrooms I have ever used in Manhattan with fresh cut flowers on the sink.

My friends, a group of girls, went to this club and were seated in the front table, right next to the stage. we were so happy to sit there. The wait staff was very nice, but management was really bad. The first comic came up and started making fun of our table and interacting with my one friend. The lady comic was going from table to table with jokes, but kept going with our table, the whole place was having a great time and then the manager came to our table and told my friend that ""she was not in the show"". The lady comic even made a joke about what the manager said to my friend. \r\nHe was really nasty and embaresses my friend. The comics whole performance was about interacting with the audience and since the manage yelled at my friend, no one else would say anything else. The whole show then was terrible. \r\nI would never go there again and most of the other people there said they wouldn't go tback either.

My friends and I saw Breuer this weekend and had such a blast. The show was awesome. He's a great performer. The venue was very clean for a comedy club. The staff was exceptionally polite. They had bar food which was also really good. And the chocolate cake was awesome! I can't complain about our night.

My friend Lisa performed a few weeks ago and she was fantastic. I highly recommend going to Gotham Comedy Club. We saw 6 other comedians perform that night (each for about 10-15 minutes) and they were all very funny. A visit to the comedy club is the perfect idea when you are looking for a unique night out. Laughter is great medicine after a stressful day. 23rd street is super convenient too. (The food comes from R.U.B. BBQ next door so if you're hungry too, the food is tasty!- not your typical bar food)

My boyfriend and I always enjoy comedy clubs and were looking forward to checking out Gotham. The place is attractive and spacious and the waitstaff seemed very friendly, BUT the show last night was one of the worst (maybe the worst) show we had seen in a long time. I'm not good with names and it wouldn't be polite to name people anyway, so let me do it this way - There was a young irish guy with sophomoric jokes that just were not funny. There was also a tall redheaded woman who was horrible (she actually made a tables groan) and a young woman (she looked 18 at the most) who had jokes that went nowhere! I'm realizing that I could almost list everyone on the show but I don't want to go overboard. Basically, if this is the talent pool this club draws from, they have some real problems, Maybe we went on an ""off night"" but still, wow, what a waste of $80. The table next to us told us that they also hated the show too but that normally the shows are better. Maybe we'll try Gotham again another time but not anytime soon!

Pros: Spacious, convenient location, friendly wait staff

Cons: Talent Level (or lack thereof) of comics

Great experience, top notch comedians. I had a wonderful time. The service was also particular favorable. After a long week at work this is the place one can truly go to enjoy oneself

My wife and I went to see Jon Pinette this weekend, and we had reservations and while they warned us to get there 30-45 minutes early, we got there 30 minutes early and got the absolute last two and worst seats in the place. I think if they're going to put people in those seats, they should not charge the full price for them. Just like theaters and stadiums charge less for obstructed view, because that's what we had. We were all the way off to the side, and our view was obstructed by the maitre d's station. Everytime they'd go to ring in an order, we couldn't see. Another solution might be to elevate the seats along the sides a foot or two, which would make them from so bad to perhaps very good. But even worse than that the sightline was the fact that the speakers all face straight out from the stage, so we could hardly hear from where we were. Especially since the first comic talked in a cool, low key conversational voice, we didn't hear a single thing he said. Luckily, Pinette yells his entire routine, so we heard most of that (but still not all since he still keeps the mic kind of from from his mouth). The service was great though. And having food from the Rub BBQ next door is a great idea, although our chicken was dry - there was no sauce on it, but maybe that's their style (still, we would have like some on the side).

Pros: can't think of any

Cons: the whole package

Gotham is a lot nicer than most of the clubs in NYC. The talent can vary just like anywhere as comedy is subjective, it depends on what you're into. Jessica Kirson is hilarious and she hosts a new talent night on Mondays. The club offers a menu of select items from the BBQ place next door which is great.

I've gone to Gotham several times. Sometimes, I laughed a ridiculous amount and was just amazed about the high-quality, famous (and not-so-famous, but still funny) comics that I got to see; other times, it was just plain awkward to watch people go down in flames. I would still recommend going, but go with an open mind, and realize that, since there are so many factors that make a comedy show great/awful, you should be prepared to go a couple of times to get a fair assessment of the flavor of the place.

Cons: Two-drink minimum

Accidentally went to the High Times Comedy Festival show, but the acts did not even focus on the smoking. Actually most of the comedians pretended to be high, then forgot they were trying. Anyway, the club is one of the nicest and best priced of the many I have been to in the city. If there's one negative thing to say about the place, it would be the less than stellar seating arrangement.

Its no wonder comedy central picked Gotham for its new stand up comedy show. The room is over the top beautiful and they just get it. still way cheaper than the competition but their product is the best!!!

My friends and I do a yearly get together in NYC. Gotham is frequently the sight of our reunification. This year we attended the new Gotham and were completely blown away. We all adored the old Gotham, but there is something to be said about the fabulousness of the new venue. The service and staff were as friendly and classy as always and the showroom was absolutely striking. Instead of catching up, I think we spent most the time discussing how shocked we were that they were able to keep that warm inviting charm. Tom Papa had my entire party crying we were laughing so hard! How is one man so funny? I guess Jerry Seinfeld really knows how to peg a star. And how did Gotham manage to steal away Mr. Greg Giraldo from his hosting gig on that Comedy Central show. Well whatever they did, bravo Gotham...Bravo.

Cons: More Drink Choices

The comedians were great, but you can see them anywhere in the city...nothing new there...show was not well attended...they have NO food...horrible room and really horrible sound system. It's a rinky-dink operation. Don't bother.

If you haven't been to the new Gotham Comedy Club you are missing out! This place is by far the best comedy club in NYC. Other clubs are dingy, dirty and the comedians are subpar. These performers had great material and really got the crowd going. This place knows how to do it right with a gorgeous new space that is no comparison to the other clubs in the city. Their service was prompt and very friendly. We couldn't have asked for a better time and will be back for many more shows!

Comics were not funny. The atmosphere was not conducive to inspiring laughter...maybe because the room was so big and the audience was so small, over all a horrible experience. My whole party was very disappointed with the experience but we did share a laugh about our bill and about how up-tight atmosphere.

Needed some giggles so my husband decided to make a reservation here for some laughs and you can forget about giggles....we were laughing our butts off and so was everyone in the club!! The comedians and the host were hilarious! Each one gave a different flavor, and they all had super material. I was kind of disappointed in the drink selection as they didn't really have a full bar. It was pretty difficult to get the waitress too..she only comes to you exactly 3 times. Twice because there is a 2 drink minimum and the final time to give you the tab. If you want more than 2 drinks you have to hail her down. I would definitely recommend this place for some super laughs, but make sure you get something to eat beforehand because there is no food or appetizer menu.

I've been to their old place and always had a great time, but this new place is really awesome. It's nice to go to a place that just says 'class'. I'm not a 'fan' of comedy but watch it on tv and really enjoy it when I go. I'm just looking for my wife and I to be entertained, and I've never seen a bad show. i haven't liked every comic, but I don't expect to. Bang for the buck this place is a homerun. Only downside was no food but they said it's coming. They sent us to the pub next door for a bite before. We let them know we were going to Gotham and they had us out in 25 mins.

I don't normally write reviews but felt it was necessary. I go to Gotham regularly but the last two times the shows have stinked!!! I went this weekend and saw the worst show I've ever seen in a NY comedy club! I'm not sure why they've changed the shows because the quality of the comics has gotten so bad and that's the main reason I go to Gotham so I think it's time I started to search for a new club with better comics! Oh yeah, the waitress had lots of ""attitude"" too!\n

I really loved attending a show at Gotham Comedy Club. I was laughing the entire time, and continued to remember a majority of the jokes after the show. The staff was very friendly. They were attentive to the customer needs at all times. When drinks were low, they were right there. The atmosphere was sheek. I liked the ambiance, and the comedians were right there with the audience. It wasn't crowded. I recommend highly to attend a show at the club. You'll be laughing your head off!
