Casa Lever

★★★★☆
The Lever House rebootsno pun intendedas an Italian restaurant, with San Ambroeus chef Mario Danielli acting as head chef to four Milanese chefs. So much for the old New Yorker standby of questioning every Italian restaurant's authenticity!

The bartenders are so rude!!! I can not believe how we were treated this evening. So we (my girlfriend and I) sat at the bar and had a couple drinks each. I then decided I was hungry and ordered the sliders. The bartender took the order

I can't believe that I and two other friends just spent $400+ for dinner and drinks at the Lever House because it was far from worth it. I had the sea bass, which was so bad I choose not to eat it. When the wait staff picked up my plate they never asked, "was everything okay?" even though it was clear that I barely touched my dinner. The dining room was more than 50 percent empty, which meant that our waiter was far from busy, but he was still MIA for a good portion of the evening. I don't like when the wait staff hovers over a table, but clearly this staff wasn't interested in ensuring that their customers not only enjoyed a good meal, but the experience was an enjoyable one.

Bottom line - I could have forgiven the bad service after all you are there for the food, but the food was not good. With so many other amazing restaurants in the city I won't be heading back to the Lever House. Please don't make the same mistake.

I went for Thanksgiving Dinner with a friend and it was HORRIBLE. The service or shall I say what service. Even though the meal was prix fix, the waitress suggetsed that we share a side dish even though it was included in the meal, what is that all about? Then she suggested that we order our desert when we ordered our meal, there was no desert that would take that long to prepare. Makes you feel as though they want to get you in and out as fast as possible. Once our waitress took our order we never saw her again. My friend's meal was un edible, he could not even cut the meat. Then, finally when we were able to flag someone down to complain they tried to make us feel as though it was our fault that we did not say anything sooner. We would have if the waitress did not disappear for 45 minutes. When the manager came over he said he would make it up to us in desert we said no thanks and that they could take one meals off the bill since it could not be eaten. They were extremely unaccomodating and I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN OR RECCOMMEND IT!! In addition, they wanted $25 for a glass of wine. SHAMEFULL.

i wandered in last saturday evening at dinner hour with a friend, still dressed for lunch & shopping (shopping bags included), we really just wanted to get a quick look at the room, i'm a fan of marc newsom's work. instead, we were shown right in, seated in the bar, snacking away and sampling house cocktails. The host and the bartender/mixologist treated us as if we were regulars, we went in expecting a peek and a business card, not to be there an hour later warm, cozy & martini'd up in Barbarella's spaceship.. I love a good bar, especially when the restaurant has great design - you can enjoy it from a different perspective and try a few small bites when you arent doing the full dinner thing (or, when you have a late reservation somewhere else. why not do two great places in a night?).
The bartender, i didnt get his name but if they are all as welcoming and professional as he is, i might sit at the bar for dinner next time i go there, the reviews here dont say much for the waitstaff. I didnt get a chance to see them in action so i dont know..
recommendation: the heirloom tomato & basil martini. there are no words for this cocktail. i want one now.

A few months ago, I had a good dinner at Lever House. The place was busy and vibrant, the stuff friendly and the ambience charming. I went back last week, to find the place half empty (on a Friday night) and the service very disappointing. The menu was featuring fresh pasta with freshly shaved truffle. Its a simple and glorious dish, religiously executed in italy and celebrated by chef such Gualtiero Marchesi. Unfortunatly, the pasta was not al dante, lacking salt and , worst of all the truffle wasnt shaved at the table but just served on top. I sent it back to the kitchen only to receive another mediocre portion of it. Just to put things in prospective, the day after I have a similar dish (risotto di castelmagno and truffle) at perse and not only was delicious but costed half of the price i have been presented at Lever house. I have found the stuff too young and not passionate about food enough. The overall experience was disappointing and I will bring my comments to the michelin site as well.

Probably worth going there if you are interested in decor, but ny has got better places if you are interested in real food.

We had wanted to go here awhile & tonight seemed to be as good as any. We arrived & my wife was impressed by the decor-kind of reminded me of some old-fashioned post-modern situation, if that makes sense. We were given a nice booth in the back w/ a view of the entire place. After much debate, due to many delicious sounding choices on the menu (I wanted to try the veal) we went w/ the autumn tasting menu w/ wine pairings. I was hesitant about the TM because it seemed pricy & not enough offerings to justify-turned out to be plenty. She started w/ blackbery limeade cocktail & couldnt stop raving about it. 1st course was vitello tonnato & bresaola w/ avocado relish-the flavors were clean & meaty, just as I wanted them to be. 2nd-cod & braised brisket w/ mushrooms & carrots. Doubts faded as I savored the crispy, well-seasoned skin of the juicy cod mixed w/ the tender meatiness of the brisket. My wife thought the dry red w/ the cod/brisket (2003 piedmont cascina ca'rossa) was wonderful. 3rd-beef tenderloin w/ grilled foie gras & black truffle sauce. I thought the tenderloin was a bit chewy & we agreed that the meat overpowered the FG. She enjoyed it separate from the meat & didnt finish the dish. I was feeling full by time I ate my last bite. 4th-a plate of pear, quince & concord grape sorbets-all very nice & refreshing. The quince was especially creamy. Finally, dessert was a caramel almond cake w/ roasted apples & vanilla ice cream. I enjoyed the caramel dots around the dish & thought the cake was moist & wonderful like toffee. It was very good w/ the ice cream. The other wine pairings were very good, but due to lack of space here I cant go on. Total bill was $410 w/ tax & tip. Service was friendly but the staff was young, a bit sloppy & unpolished. Overall, I think the food is pretty good but could get lost in the competitive food world of NYC especially considering the high prices.

I went to Lever House restaurant tonight expecting it to be packed and loud (as it had been the last time I went). Surprisingly it was quiet. It didn't have the hustle and bustle of the last time I had been, but the food and service was impeccable. The staff was relaxed without being overly so and very knowledgable. The food is simply outstanding and the desserts are some of the best I've ever had. I've been during the week and it's noisy and crowded, the weekend is a much more mellow and relaxing vibe.

I've been to the Lever House many times over the last two years and was finally compelled to write a review. It made a seemless transition from being uber-hip and hot to being one of the great restaurants in Manhattan. The food and service have never been better. Sure the decor is pretty but the food is the real star here. I can't recommend it enough!

I went here for a birthday dinner with my family when they were over from London, so was looking for something special. The ambience was great, very sophisticated, and the food was good, although not excellent. The service, however, was appalling, given that it was quite possibly the most expensive meal I've ever eaten. The waiter was cocky and overly flirtatious to the point of rudeness, and failed to refill anyone's glasses with wine or really use any common sense at all. A shame, because otherwise it would have been a great evening. Great cocktails though!

Came here a couple months ago, really enjoyed the dining experience. Ambience is very cool, however, feels stiff b/c u can tell most people that come are for business reasons or have $$$. However, even with the upscale crowd, the staff is very friendly and great and the food was delicious! had the beef cheeks which i recommend if u like red meat. overall a great place to eat american cuisine, however, it is pricey (but worth it) and the crowd is upscale but not snooty. love the way the place looked too.

The decor definitely brings to the restaurant's appeal. The tunnel entrance, which kinda gives the feel of a run way, opens up to a great dining hall with mood lighting and modern decor. The wait staff is very courteous and the food, if you pick the right entrees can be worth the price. I forget what I had because I guess it was just that, forgettable. My boyfriend was very happy with his dining experience. I took suggestions from the waitress, which most times gives great results, but I guess this time she and I weren't on the same wavelength. Definitely a trendy place if you want to people watch among a crowd of mainly late 30s and 40-50 somethings. Don't get me wrong, I would definitely go back and want to bring my girlfriends. Worth the time and money... just be ready to spend a good amount.

I had heard great things about this restaurant from colleagues. Unfortunately, I found the service below par for this level ($$) of restaurant. Simply put, the wait staff was friendly but lacked finesse. Two glasses were knocked over by the waiter and attendant and my guest was asked three times if he was finished with his meal. Hopefully management will review this and step it up. The decor and food were great. I felt as if James Bond may pass my table at anytime. I'll give it another try...but most savvy NYC diners wouldn't.

From the moment we entered Lever House everything was extraordinary. The friendliness of the staff, the decor, food, wine selection, value were all superb. For appetizers try the tuna carpaccio with wasabi creme fraiche, lobster tempura with tarter sauce. You will not be disappointed. Then for the entrees, try the lobster tails and rack of lamb. The cote de boeuf for two is delicious. For sides, the spinach, haricots verts and broccoli raab were all winners. For dessert try the warm cookies, chocolate-coffee bombe and peanut butter parfait. WOW! What a meal. The wine list is great also.

The room is spectacular - couldn't take my eyes off the design all night. The food was pretty amazing - there was a duck appetizer with an outstanding sauce, and a grapefruit-caramel dessert which is unbelievable weird and delicious - a true original, a must have. It's a neat place!

Ambience was great. Service commendable. The food was not good. The shrimp appetizer was odd in flavor and texture. A bit mushy and awkwardly paired with the pasty and flavorless chick pea hummus. My husbands sirloin was dry and tough. The grilled lobster was terrible. Two small, unimpressive lobster tails set atop a brew of tomato based stewed root vegetables. Yes, even as I write this I am reminded how inappropriate and disturbing the pairing of lobster and stewed vegetables really is! The desserts were ok. Presented well, very sweet. However, by the end of the meal, we were just anxious to get it over with.

This restaurant gives you satisfaction. Excellent dishes, polite & friendly services, charming atmosphere and fantastic futuristic "in 60's sense" decor can guarantee you an unforgettable dinner.

Back to the future decor in a really cool room. I've been now for both lunch and dinner. Lunch was good people watching with some serious power celebs, but I prefered dinner to spend a little more time with my food.
The flavors were clean fresh and focused. The chef really seems to respect the "product". I loved the salmon ceviche and the foie gras was fantasic. For main courses there is a pork chop I wouldn't miss and my boyfriend loved his lobster. The desserts made us very very happy. BTW, the wine list has lots of hard to fine cult wines.
The waiters seem to be on the ball and everyone was really nice. Its not cheap, but well worth it.

I've been to Lever House for lunch and dinner and both were enjoyable meals. The room feels kind of like a cross between an old star trek movie and Barbarella (try to sit in the command deck at the back). The service was quite good, one waiter was very funny and very helpful. The food is not amazing but it is pretty good and the wines the waiter helped pick out were excellent and reasonably priced. Overall a nice place place to go.

How nice everyone is the moment I called for a reservation until I walked out the door. Everyone I encountered was so nice and so gracious, beautiful room and beautiful people, unbelievable food. My date had the duck app which was to die for and I loved the Halibut and the desserts were crazy good. I can't wait to go back to Lever House.

I was nervous about going to Lever House because I thought it was going to be some stuffy pretentious power joint. What a pleasant surprise to find a fun, high-energy, beautiful restaurant. And of course it is great for people watching.
The food was kind of food that makes you close your eyes and make happy noises.
A melt-in-your-mouth white tuna tartare, a sweet and savory lobster tempura to start are sure fire, while I had a steak that was the best I've ever had.
Don't forget to try the tropical fruit mojito (passion fruit??) and a great minty citron lemonade that was dangerously delicious.
Absolutely first rate experience.

If you would have asked me 6 months ago about Lever House I would tell you it is excellent and one of my favorite NYC restaurants now however I would say the exact opposite. When I went this past weekend the food was not prepared well, my bass was over cooked and my dates steak was tough. The service was horrible and overall it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had! It is too bad because it used to be an excellent restaurant!

I've read mixed reviews, but I must say that this restaurant has served me a meal that they don't have to be ashamed of. Diver scallops were perfect, as well as the vitello tonnato. But don't expect a menu with original plates. It's mostly standard fare at high quality and very high prices.
But price was not a problem, as witnessed by the capacity utilization (100%) of the tables.
The right place for a good business lunch/dinner.

After venturing to Lever House during the height of the buzz, I was pleasently surprised by the level of service and quality of the food. Now, after a return trip for dinner, the buzz has waned and the kitchen seems to have been outsourced to Applebees.

My salad was virtually tasteless. However, I would have welcomed a second round of the salad after attempting to cut the sirloin. The Sizzler would have offered a far superior cut at a much lower price.

This allegedly hip new restaurant gets an A- in service, and a C- in food quality. Sadly, the bread and garlic spread was the best part of the meal. The filet mignon was tepid, tasteless, and came with over-boiled vegetables swimming in a pool of meat juice and vegetable sweat. The sirloin was chewy at best, and the chef apparently added gristle at no extra charge! For this type of over-infused American fare, try a less expensive, less hyped locale further downtown.

Considering how cold it's been in NYC this Winter, Lever House is not set up to deal with the cold. Freezing cold air was pumped into the dining room through the "tunnel" entrance causing most of the diners to get their coats from coat check. For god's sake - block that thing up so i can enjoy my average tasing dinner -- BTW: Killer Bar -- i'd go there for drinks (coat on) anytime.

Pros: Bar, Crowd, Decor

Cons: Poor heating, Rude Hostess

.

Yes, the building is historically important and the space is interesting. The food is okay but, not tops in the city. Noww that we've been fair on those points. Could the hostesses be more rude? There something to be learned from courteous service. The out of work actresses should adjust their attitude soon or they'll be booking tables on the phone for quite some time. The phone experience left me with a bitter taste. Enough of one that I put the time into writing this.

Pros: Space

Cons: Hostess, Service, Attitude

Having dined in the Lever House, I know where all the money went--to the decor. Our service was exceptional, our food slightly above average.

When a place is this beautiful, this hot, and this hip - I am usually skeptical.
I am now a true believer. I was impressed: really nice, knowledgable staff, food that is well presented, thoughfully composed and delicious, and an interesting wine list. Lever House has it all. And no, evidentally you don't have to be a celebrity to be well treated.

Was taken here recently for my birthday and although the place isnt quite romantic, its very cool and chic. Makes you feel like youre bound to see or be seen. The decor is minimal and modern - looks straight out of the future. The food was overall good but the apps blew away the entrees (carpaccio and duck recommended for apps - lamb for entree) - dessert was no joke either! Plate presentation was clean and well designed. Staff was friendly and knowledgable. We were even sat 15 mins earlier than our reservation. I would defintely return here :o)

Terrific Food, Service & Marc Newson Decor. Hands down, the Best New Restaurant in 2003.

Pros: Service, Decor, Menu Selection

a great, hip, good food place in midtown that will impress out of towners. very nice bartenders and hostess and good service, not too loud, alot of suits but very stylish - grown-up jetsons decor, a futuristic airport lounge feeling - loved it.

Pros: modern, good fun, good service

Cons: there were a few gnat, s at the bar and at , our table!

As jaded NY diners, we are happy to express our delight at Lever House. Everything was superb, even after my menu caught on fire. A genuine midtown destination.

I don't care about super-hip ambience, nor am I impressed to be dining in a room full of celebrities, (both of which apply to my eperience at Lever House). What was amazing: incredible and unusual wines (impressive list), not-to-be-believed appetizers (I sampled several), perfect lamp chops, and hugely decadent desserts. And, the service was impressive, considering I was at the only non-celeb table in the room. In general, this was one of my better NYC dining experiences.
