Although I've always ranked Bergdorf's & Barneys highest in my pantheon of shopping meccas, I may have to make a special emeritus place for Takashimaya. This is quite simply the most exquisite store in New York. The design sensibility is very Asian although they represent surprisingly few Asian designers (Yeoh Lee, Eun Hwa of Paris are only a handful). Most of the designers carried are European or French Canadian - I am NOT complaining! Everything here is exquisite. The look is discreet luxury - this is not the place to find gilded Versace or high-bling looks (which can be fun and have their place). Functional design, architectural nuance, textural wit - these are the hallmarks of the clothing and accessories Takashimaya carries. I can spend hours happily browsing this store. And the Tea Box cafe is an oasis of delicious foods and teas in the intensity of Manhattan.

Pros: Extraordinary designs

Cons: Smaller but exquisite selection

Exquisite merchandising - each floor different and equally as beautiful. Who needs to buy when you can window shop here!

And don't miss the tea room in the basement. Expensive, but glorious food in a soothing atomosphere.

My Boyfriend ordered roses and paid nearly $300 on Feb. 13th for V-day. On the 14th at 4:45pm they called and said that my BF had ordered flowers and their delivery guy was very close and begged me to wait for him. I sat in my office waiting and he didn't arrive, so I left the office at 6pm. The roses didn't arrive until the 15th at 3:30pm. My boyfriend was so upset and he told them that he would be paying for the flowers, I ended up getting an arrangement that was not even half the size it was supposed to be. He ordered from Takashimaya because of their reputation for high quality flowers, and beautiful and unusual arrnagements. Takashimaya is now the unreliable company that ruined my Valentines Day and sent me a dissapointing arrangement a day late.

Takashimaya has a beautiful assortment of antique, contemporary, Japanese and European things that you can eat, wear, look at and use. The service is also some of the best in the city. I recently spent an hour looking at makeup with Reiko - she was helpful and unpretentious. If not for yourself go there to get gifts. The wrapping and presentation is absolutely gorgeous.

Yes, it's incredibly expensive - but this store is such a feast for the senses it's entirely forgiveable. Wonderful respite from the chaos and clamor outside on 5th avenue - their flower arrangements are some of the most beautiful I've seen. I've gotten a few gifts from here, most notably a set of linked bud vases that you can bend into different shapes. A really fun idea & looks great with a few delicate flowers. They also have a good variety of teas & tea accessories. You must visit, even if you can't even contemplate buying anything.

PROS: Beautiful merchandise
CONS: Tres chere

A great great store direct from Tokyo to Fifth Avenue. THey have everything from fashion to jewelry and bags. In the basement is a wonderful little teashop which is a nice place to relax after a long day shopping on Fifth Avenue.

They have a great display for the store, and all of the flowers are fresh and lovely, however they are too expensive for any normal person to buy. They have a tight and cramped space, so unfortunately, no more than 3 people can fit comfortably inside. The staff was helpful and excellent at arranging the flowers though.

Takashimaya New York is the New York branch of the famed Japanese high end department store. It is six tiny floors filled with some of the most beautiful items you will ever see. The prices are insane so much so I only rated this store a four because the prices are so harsh it is almost silly. The Tea Room in the basement is quite nice and not all that rediculous considering tea in the Fifth Avenue area is getting higher and higher every day and I would recommend you sight shop the store and then head down to the basement for a pot of tea.

PROS: Beautiful Place
CONS: Too Expensive

You don't know quite what to expect when you walk in this store. There are several levels and on each something unique. There is very unique clothing on the upper levels and a beautiful garden on the lower level full of unique and lovely flower arrangements like you'll see nowhere else. The tearoom in the basement is fun though small, you might want to look elsewhere if you get clausterphobic because it gets very crowded around lunch time.

This tiny flower and garden shop located in the lobby floor of Takashimaya. Although the space is a bit cramped, it is filled with creative arrangements. The colors and shapes of all the flowers are very inspiring. There are many containers to showcase each flower as well. It is well worth a trip if you find yourself on 5th avenue and need a change of pace. If you love flowers and want to be inspired heres a great place to visit.

PROS: Great ideas that will inspire you. Makes for a great house warming gift
CONS: A little on the expensive side.

I like Takashimaya since they have stylish clothes, home furnishings, and accessories. They are from Japan, and specialize in offering uncommon luxury goods. This store had six floors plus a basement. It was tiny and there were barely any customers. The prices were very high, and I hated that. In my opinion, a women's camisole is not worth $143 nor is a small earthenware pot worth $1200! Besides the prices, the special thing about this store was the decor. I felt as if I was in a rich estate as I shopped. The goods are displayed so beautifully. If you are willing to spend the money, check this place out. Otherwise, don't waste your time here.

Takashimaya is such a gorgeous store with unique items and a dedicated staff. The store is small, so it is very easy to navigate, plus the Teabox Cafe on the bottom floor has the best lunch on 5th Avenue for a day of shopping; light yet filling and very delicious. Things are pretty expensive, but the quality and originality of their items are unmatched by any other department store in the city.

The merchandise was beautiful and beautifully displayed, however it was our misfortune to encounter the rudest sales person I have ever met. I left the store completely disillusioned because of it. I can find darling Japanese and high fashion things in other stores where they treat you much kinder

AND customer service is second to none. the staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. even their gift wrap is gorgeous!

My favorite store in New York City!!!!

As an Interior Designer, my dream, a Client that wants me to design their entire home with all Takashimaya items.

I spend a day browsing, shopping and lunching or taking tea after three each time I visit New York City.

Pros: Unique, Classical, Understated elegance

How refreshing to spot an understated facade on Fifth Avenue. The entrance area for plants and ceramic flowerpots is fun to browse, and you can pick up nice gifts (many in the $50-$80 range) in the Tea Box downstairs. Try some emerald tea while you're there. This store is somewhat touristy, but a pleasure for anyone who appreciates Japanese aesthetics.
