Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Owner/chef John Philip Greco and his wife Suzanne Marie Lonzar put together their middle names to create the French-sounding moniker for their wholly American restaurant. The space is cozy and welcoming: Large murals depict country landscapes and simple pleasures, while the smell of hearty food lets you know that some of those pleasures await you.

The Food
This hidden gem charms crowds with a carefully prepared, market-fresh New American menu. Servers start the meal by bringing a kettle full of steamed Prince Edward Island mussels in lightly seasoned broth. Generous dishes such as grilled spinach and artichoke heart-stuffed chicken breast with tangy citrus sauce and garlic-basil mashed potatoes offer a pleasing balance of flavors and textures. The pork chops and grilled sirloin steak are prime cuts. Comfort-food side dishes such as an extra-creamy bowl of creamed spinach are recommended.

Fancy for no reason

by LuckyCharm09

Yesterday me and my husband went there because of citysearch reviews and thier menu online. When we got there, we found out that they changed the entire menu and made the prices higher. Inspite of this, we ordered mussels and salmon entree. The mussels were okay, nothing special. But the salmon turned out to be horrible, we cook it at home much better even though we are not cooks. So what are they so priced up? To look just fancy?

Pros: None

Cons: Poor quality, high prices

Dreadful

by biggmakk64

May be the worst food I've ever had in NYC (tied with nearby Tartine). I don?t know where the rave reviews come from; perhaps there are two Philip Maries in the area and I just happened to have gone to the wrong one.

Food was bland, poorly prepared and over-priced. My Mediterranean sea bass had a muddy freshwater fish taste (my guess it was tilapia). The fish was uncooked in the middle and was covered in some type of brown sweet sauce - strange combination. I sent it back and got the salmon instead, which too was awful.

The duck breast was too lean and overcooked; tasted like rubber disks, again with an inappropriate sauce. The oysters Rockefeller were soggy with no flavor.

There are many good restaurants in the West Village. I advise you to avoid this one.

Pros: Location

Cons: Food, food and food

Lovely setting and elegant food

by anitaL

Just came home from a great meal. We were a group of eight coming together from all over the world and we were all impressed with the preparation and beautiful presentation of the food here. The service was also friendly and attentive. Can't remember when I last had such an all-around good experience.

Pros: beautiful presentation

Saturday Brunch

by ADorsey64

It may be a little crowded on Saturday's, but it's brunch in NYC, so you can't really ask for a quiet atmosphere. Other than the noise it was a great brunch. The food was amazing, and good portion sizes too. The service was great, our waitress was very nice, and checked up on us the perfect amount of times. And I never had to ask for more water or mimosa's, it was just always their. I'll make it a point to come here often for brunch in the city.

Awesome Food!

by otoolemeredith162

I came here for dinner with my boyfriend on a Sunday and it was their Sunday night barbeque special. My boyfriend got the catfish with mac&cheese and greens and I tried some, it was delicious. I didn't do the BBQ deal, but I did get the Mediterranean Sea Bass which was, honestly, the best meal I've had all year. Will definitely be coming back, and would like to try their brunch.

I went here with my boyfriend to enjoy a nice meal before walking around manhattan all night. The food was great, I had the artichoke stuffed chicken, and he had the special of the day: flatiron steak. Both dishes were great, and then we shared the pumpkin fritters..even more delicious. It is now are favorite place to go out for dinner whenever we are in manhattan

Delicious Food & Romantic Atmosphere

by SHearn

I brought my girlfriend here on a Brunch date and it was fantastic! They had outdoor seating and on top of the brunch being one of the best i've had in a long time it came with unlimited bloody marys. The server was funny and nice and checked on us the perfect amount of times (which is surprisingly rare). We stayed for drinks after eating and almost considered staying for their BBQ the same day (I guess it is every sun) but we had full satisfied stomachs so we will be trying that in the next couple of weeks. Thanks Philip Marie.

Pros: Great dining experience all around

Cons: None to write about

Horrible!

by nycmusakman1114

I went here for lunch today . The restaurant was not crowded yet we had the worst experience imaginable.

1st i was told the Coca Cola soda gun was not working. then the waitress could not figure out who ordered what and could not understand English. She would put plates down and then take away. just to come back minutes later with the same burgers. a few folks were served and finished before the rest of us were even served.
I finally received my burger well after everyone else were done eating and it was raw. not rare but raw although i ordered Medium. one meal never even made it out until 20 minutes after we were all done eating and had to remind the waiter it was ordered.

This place was horrible. I would stay away.

Pros: None

Cons: Everything.

Wonderful Village Restaurant

by ElClarke

I recently went to Philip Marie and found out their special of the day was a four course wine tasting. My party (a little reluctant at first not knowing how the portions would be) finally decided to do it. It was amazing! It included wild boar ravioli and a roasted leg of lamb that were absolutely delicious. And though i don't know that much about wines i loved the whole process of tasting while they describe them. The atmosphere was cozy and we all had a great time.

Staying power

by DrGrandma40

I've been going to Philip Marie about six times a year for seven years, though I don't live in the neighborhood.. I love it--inside, outdoors, any time of day or year, for lunch, brundh, dinner. The menu is interesting, wine list is super, the service is always pleasant, and I love to take out of towners there for a "real New York bistro" experience. My favorite at lunchtime is the parsley salad with ham. What a great idea! And so delicious.
Thanks, Philip, and thanks, Marie. (I wish I remembered your first names.)

FANTASTIC!!

by Snuggynyc

I have been dining in the village for many years now and Philip Marie is by far my favorite restaurant.
The food is magnificent (my personal favorite being the baked brie appetizer) and is pleasant to look at as well taste. Their dinner items include everything from inside-out burgers to maine lobster ravioli. I have brought everyone i know from friends to family and they have all been more than satisfied.
The decor is beautiful and i recommend taking a date to dinner in their private tasting room. It doesn't get more romantic than this (quoted by my girlfriend after our dinner)
The staff is incredibly pleasant and professional and will not hesitate to help you decide on a fantastic wine from their large selection.
Anyone looking for an excellent night out should go to Philip Marie

Solid Neighborhood Restaurant - A Keeper

by 2VillageGirls

Well girlfriend, it was another Thursday and we chose Philip Marie as our place for drinks and starters. This was a good choice. Firstly, the barkeep was friendly and invited us in, making us feel perfectly at home. We came before it became crowded and so we had him to ourselves, however, he was still very attentive even as the restaurant filled up. Clearly a popular place. And we could see why. We had 2 plates: the smoked salmon with goats cheese on toasts was a winner. Simple and perfectly balanced. Then we tried the quesadilla which was spectacular - gooey in all the right places, but with grilled chicken that stood up to the melted cheese and soft and (not too filling) tortilla. The wine was good and the mixed drinks (vodka and selzer) were standard. This is a great neighborhood place.

Awesome Wine Room

by lilluckycharm

Last week my boyfriend took me to Phillip Marie for our one year anniversary. We dined in their private wine room in the lower level of the restaurant. We had five courses, and each was paired with a different wine. Our server guided us through the whole meal and was very knowlegable. The courses were varied and paired very well with the wine. My boyfriend and I have both traveled to Napa and we were impressed by the selection of California wines. The lighting in the room was a little too dim and romantic. Fortunately, the menu was dictated to us by our server. Overall, it was a lovely experience and would definitely return.

Pros: Everything was great

Cons: The lighting was a bit dim for me

Always wonderful!!!

by DavidHfromNwk

I've been to Phillip Marie for dinner, for lunch, for brunch, and for a large party special occasion. In every case, the service was friendly but unobtrusive, the ambience was pleasant and the food was impeccable. They manage to accomplish all this without robbing you blind. Sure it's not super-fine dining, but this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC nonetheless. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be there at least 3 times a week. Fantastic!

Pros: Uniformly delicious food - you can't go wrong when you order

Cons: None

Stay away from the couples private room

by Luna1111

My husband and I opted for the couples private room dinner (wine room) for our anniversary and it was such a waste of money. The place was so cramped and hot and suffocating. People kept coming down to the bathroom, which was right next to our room, and standing in the doorway peeking in. It was not romantic, but instead irritating and annoying. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. It's a nice idea but it does not work well.

Pros: the waitstaff

Cons: the private room = too expensive!

The Best Value for the Wine Tastings on Thursdays

by JessieBunny

This has been the best experience of my life!!! The wines that were chosen were so well paired with little plates. For only $25 per person with 5 tastings, where else can you find something like that??? The service is superb, from the knowledgeable staff and the attentive busboys and the lovely manager there! Finally, me and my boyfriend found a hot spot that we'll be going back for more and more! I cant wait to go back again!

Pros: Food and Drinks

Cons: None

The wine room is lovely

by spuffylover24

I took my fiance here a couple of weeks ago for a private birthday dinner in the wine room. We did have to wait a little while (15 mins or so), but the staff was very friendly about it and comped our drinks at the bar. The wine room is small and lovely. The bottles of wine, candlelight and soft music create a beautiful atmosphere. It really felt like a special occasion. Our server was very helpful and accommodating as we selected our menu and the food, though not the most creative, was very good. The wine pairings were great, and we had a lovely time. The restaurant itself seems really quaint and we will definitely go again just to eat from the regular menu. For the personal attention and beautiful atmosphere the wine room is a great value.

Pros: Lovely atmosphere

Good food, good music

by tazelo

I made reservation at Philip Marie on a Wednesday night, jazz night and it was just perfect. The four of us took an appetizer which was very good. We had some bread and olive oil while we were waiting. Then I had the shrimps and the others had the steak and everything was very good. The music was nice, not too loud, just perfect.
I would recommand this restaurant to anyone.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!

by WolfBrad

I ordered a salad that was supposed you have lots of yummy ingredients in it, but it was all lettuce and the salad dressing was an unusual shade of pink. The bus boy poured water in my soda, and I was never given a new one. For 2 soups and 2 salads (all lettuce) it was over $50. Don't waste your time in the tourist restaurant. SO NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!

Most romantic dining experience yet!

by aleighc

My husband and I ate in the private wine cellar (for 2 people). The 5 course dinner was fantastic, the wines served with each course were perfectly paired with the food and the service was top notch. They even had a great selection of music playing through an i-pod stereo & you can even bring your own i-pod. All in all a truly wonderful and memorable dining experience I will not soon forget!

Pros: Private dining for two which is not easy to find in NYC.

My boyfriend and I went to celebrate a special occasion and we were really impressed with the cozy decor, fabulous wine and a really friendly server. Disappointing in so many ways.

by kc52

I'm not usually one to write a bad review...in fact this is my first time. But the overall experience here was severely poor. First we sat forever waiting for someone to greet us, our bottle of wine took another 10 minutes to arrive. Our server could not answer any of our questions about the menu. Then five out of our six entrees arrived without an explanation as to why one was missing. The person who delivered the food simply left. About five minutes later the server noticed we were missing an entree and ran to the kitchen to check it out. They came back with a side salad and an apology because the last meal was no where near ready. To top it off the food was not good. They are under the impression that every food is better with cornmeal, i disagree!! I will not be returning!

Best Dinner & Brunch in West Village!

by ElectronBlue

Philip Marie is truly one of those great dining destinations you simply want the world to know about. In the past five years I have dined here on at least 25 occasions, each time with a guest or a group -- and every single person has fallen in love. You can't go wrong with dinner here -- and PM also boasts probably the best Sunday Jazz Brunch in downtown NYC (I'm a big bruncher and have been many, many places). Exec Chef John Greco's menu boasts 'Innovative American Cusine' and that's definitively what it is -- it's an expansive menu with ever-changing daily specials and the fish and fowl dishes are incomparable. I had never tried elk prior to dining here (or wild boar) and each was simply outstanding. Two dishes NOT to be missed are the fried green tomatoes w/ spicy mayonnaise -- a lovely, flavorful rustic appetizer -- and the pumpkin fritters w/ warm wet walnuts (John's own creation + recipe). If you're a big fan of Sunday brunch, you MUST visit PM for their unlimited Bloody Mary Sunday jazz brunch -- it's simply the best in the West Village and probably one of the best bangs for your buck, ever -- $19.95 that is more than well-spent. The bunch selection menu alone parallels Homer's Illyiad in size, from standard brunch fare to PM originals like the delicious lobster fajita (warning: HUGE). And the bloody marys are some of the best made. Staff and service at PM are thorough, efficient without being too much in your face.

All in all, if you're missing out on Philip Marie, you're missing out on memorable, sumptuous dining in the heart of NYC's West Village. Run, don't walk. And bring friends!

very disappointing

by kate1218

This is the first time I've rated a restaurant. The good reviews were what led me to try this restaurant....and I was very disappointed. The crab cakes were very dry and tasteless with the consistency of sawdust. The fried green tomatoes were also very dry. Both appetizers came with the same orange sauce-not tasty. We ordered two specials which did not have prices listed and were significantly more expensive than most things on the menu. I had the basa (fish) which was served in a very unappetizing manner. The taste and consistency were off. Both the fish and the elk (which my husband ordered) were served on a huge mound of squash...orange again. It was a strange accompaniment for fish. The service was spotty and there was a party of about 20 children (young) in the back. Overall, a bad choice. I don't understand the good reviews I've read,

Cons: food

Wine Tastings on Thursdays Are a Must

by joa123

A couple of weeks ago my friends and I were passing by on our way to a bar when we saw a sign for wine tastings on Thursdays. We were intrigued so we went inside. The bar was full but the manager was kind enough to come over and seat us at a table. The wines were amazing and the hors d'oeuvres were perfectly paired! We had so much fun that we stayed all night and I have been back three times since! Each time I go the food is consistently good and the staff is so welcoming.

Pros: atmosphere, people, pretty much everything

Cons: i'm addicted...

Awesome chocolate pancakes!

by hpprincess

We stumbled upon this spot when we were looking for a place to have brunch. It is very cute/quaint and would make a good date spot. The menu was not bad for brunch/lunch... after I saw the chocolate chip pancakes, I knew what would be going into my tummy that very second. The pancakes were huge and were very rich due to the milk chocolate.. what other would you want them anyway? Besides the space being just a bit tight, that's all I can say about this great lunch spot!

Pros: Great chocolate-chip pancakes, cute atmosphere, reasonable price

Cons: Not much contrast in the menu, space a bit tight (well, it is NY)

16.99 Goes Far

by qtgurljny

As much as I don't want to devulge my brunch pick, I've picked up plenty of cues from Citysearch so have decided to share. The cocktail brunch is a great bargin at 16.99. Cocktails sometimes have a little bit of a bark and bite to them....guess it depends on who is mixing that day but, the breakfast is delicious. If you're an eggs benedict fan, you've got to try it here.

Great food, wonderful location, friendly service

by girlykat

My boyfriend and I went to Philip Marie for dinner on Sunday night. I had the crab cakes and the lobster ravioli. He had the parsley salad and chicken stuffed with artichoke. The crab cakes were incredibly moist and came with a delicious chunky tomato salsa. My lobster ravioli was very good as well, especially the tomato cream sauce. I had a bit of my boyfriend's chicken and plan to order it the next time we go.

We sat outside but I am anxious to go again and see the inside of the restaurant. Also, our server was very friendly and colloquial. The only drawback was that we had to wait a few minutes to get our bill once we were finished eating; however, our water glasses were refilled several times even though we were no longer ordering food or drinks.

Pros: Friendly waitress, outdoor seating, great W. Village location

Cons: Long wait for our bill

Nice staff and even better food.

by tastytim

Wow! My date and I went to Philip Marie on saturday night for a birthday celebration. The server came over soon after we were sat for our drink order. Not but a couple of minutes later the drinks were at our table. rest This was a prelude of the rest of the night. The server was so nice and easy going. The food was reasonably priced (for the village) and tasted amazing. They had a pretty good wine and drink selection as well. But what really made our night was how polite the staff was for us. What a great birthday dinner at a tried and true west village neighborhood spot. Good food, good prices, nice staff, without the stuffiness.

Pros: service, food, atmosphere

It's worth it to do the private table at least once

by creativelolita

It was my fiance's b-day and I wanted to go all out. I knew he wanted to take me here so I decided to surprise him. Their wine room was booked for the evening but the manager decided to allow us to have the tasting room. It was GORGEOUS and very romantic. 5 courses, 5 wines. You have your own kitchen and create the menu.

Here are my thoughts:

Fondue- Don't bother. It's cheese in a small bowl, not real fodue. The cheese is not that good.

The Boar- Excellent and I am not a "boar" kind of woman.

Fish- Decent

Sides- Garlic mashed potatoes, risotto and mashed sweet potatos are to die for.

Wines are top notch and paired perfectly. You aren't being served house wines here.

Note: They offer you a port and coffee at the end but do not tell you these are not included.

Dessert- The tres leches was one of the best I have ever had in or out of Mexico.

Though they say "195.00" for both, that's not accurate. The total bill 280.00 for everything. You have to give them a 50.00 deposit and that covers the 20% gratuity they add. Keep that in mind when making reservations.

Great Food! Great Service!

by tmdowling

From the moment I walked in the door I felt right at home. The warm and sincere reception that I recieved from the hostess was maintained by the staff during my entire visit. I opted to sit at the bar since I was by myself and ended up having a great time with the attentive bartender and staff. Everyone was knowledgable and gave thier recommendations for both food and wine. Everything I had was excellant. The food was delicious, well proportioned and served timely. I ended up staying much later than I had planned. I would highly recommend Philip Marie. It was so refreshing to have dinner in such a elegant but casual atmosphere where both the food and service were top notch but the prices were extremely reasonably.

Pros: ambience, service, food

Never Again

by elysrose

After hearing some friends rave about the great food and moderate prices, my husband and I could not resist. Sadly we were so extremely disappointed. The restaurant was not all it was cracked up to be in fact I would venture to say that it was nothing short of a glorified diner. The silver wear was not clean, and there was an overpowering stench coming from an undetermined place. The food was defiantly unremarkable. I would NOT recommend eating at this establishment in the future, and I am shocked to hear that it has been open for quite a few years who let that one slip?! Diners be ware.

Pros: thumbs down

Cons: we will never recomend this place EVER

Amazing atmosphere and featuring incredible tastes and attention to detail. I always have great service and fine cusine. In addition to the fabulous menu, there are always innovative specials making it so hard to decide what to select.

It is definitely a great place, and one you will keep going back!

Pros: Food, atmosphere, service
