Wen to Philip Marie last year for New Years and it was a terrible experience. Food was ok, but there are so many options in NYC, spend your money somewhere that will treat you with respect.

I made a reservation for a large party weeks in advance. After talking to restaurant staff several times prior to arrival, including 4 hours beforehand, I showed up and almost everything I'd confirmed had changed. The MAJOR changes were, the private room I'd been guaranteed was suddenly unavailable and the corkage fee increased from $15/bottle to $20 - $30/bottle. The Manager confirmed that his staff had given me the wrong information, but was unapologetic and refused to honor what was said to me. The private room went to someone willing to pay more money than me. My feeling is that they only told me what they needed to get me there.

cuisine was refined and well cultured, the chicken was seasoned vibrantly, but slightly dry from being overcooked. however, me being a somewhat of a wine critic in my personal life, have to say that the selection was one of the most comprehensive menus that ive ever experienced from an extensive array of all varieties to quench the pallat of the thirstiest gourmet!

Honestly its not a bad looking place, but behind it all the food does not speak for itself... Mediocre at best and thats being generous... Im not for bashing restaurants but this place is not what it appears to be.. For starters i ordered a Grey Goose on the rocks and it was NOT Grey Goose.. secondly, I ordered the special fish of the day and it smelled like it had been sitting around all day.. Disgusting.. People were nice but I think it was to make up for the quality in food and drinks they were pawning off.. Do not recommend this place.

Last week my husband & I had the pleasure of dining in the private Wine Room for 2 at Philip Marie. Our custom tailored 5 course menu was exactly what we were looking for at an unbelievable price. Not only was each item we enjoyed cooked to absolute perfection, but our server provided us with the most attentive service we have received in New York City in a very long time. By far, the pork chop was the most delicious I have ever had before in my life. My husband opted for the sizzling lobster, which smelled and tasted of aromas as divine as its presentation. The chef selected wines that were paired with each of our courses, far surpassed any expectation of a "by the glass" wine. Kudos Philip Marie for your unmatched wine selection!! If you are looking for an intimate experience, great food & friendly service this West Village find is undoubtedly the place to be!!

I had heard about this restaurant in the West Village from friends. Everyone had good things to say so I decided to take my date here. I couldnt have asked for more. The service was on point, the food was fantastic, and the portions were awesome. For being so reasonably priced, I was surprised at the beautiful plates being put in front of us.

Try the roasted beet appetizer with the goat cheese dressing...so creative and delicious. The best part is this wonderful retaurant is in the best neighborhood in NYC...the West Village!

Since then this has been my go-to restaurant in NYC and especially the village. I have sent multiple friends there everyone has been very pleased. Thanks Philip Marie!

We visit our daughter at NYU every other weekend and have enjoyed many terrific eateries for our Sundays lunch/brunch visits. Sadly, Philip Marie is NOT one of them. I think the reviews online are either staged, or out of date since nearly every review gives it the highest rating possible. The restaurant has even blocked the ability for patrons to write reviews on OpenTable, where I made my reservation, which really makes me think that they must be aware that the food stinks and are trying to keep the public from finding out.

The food took a very long time to arrive and my salad and salmon both tasted ??off? like they??d been sitting in the refrigerator soaking up lovely aromas. The salmon was still raw inside, which was fine since it tasted lousy anyway and I didn??t intend to eat most of it. My daughter??s pancakes/eggs/sausage arrived without syrup and at room temperature so the cold butter ripped through the tasteless and pale pancakes. IHOP which just opened on Union Square would be a much better choice of breakfast eateries.

I ordered a side of waffle fries which are obviously pre-purchased frozen since there was some weird orange stuff on the outside of them. As far as my daughter and I were concerned, these were the best thing on the table since our entrees were severely disappointing.

This chef??s bio reads nicely but he just doesn??t have the potential to maintain a good restaurant on his own. There??s also a time limit on how long the guest??s can use the table depending on the type of meal they have come for.

There is good news though. The Magnolia Bakery is only one block from this restaurant, so if you must go, leave room for dessert and stop by this acclaimed bakery for a yummy ending to a lousy meal.

burgers are OK. However, this place is over rated. The bloody mary's were poor way to spicy....think they tried to hide the no vodka taste. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.

I had read so many amazing reviews of this place. A friend and I went for dinner in March and it was... well, fine. The waiter was not especially friendly (nor was he rude) and the food seemed just slightly above average for a NYC restaurant. Loved the bartender, though!

My boyfriend and I went for New Year's Eve and we had an amazing meal. Not only did they have a bunch of options for the pre-fixed menu....the portions were great and not small as I thought they would be. Wonderful place for dinner, small but romantic. Will definitely bring our friends back!

Anytime a friend comes into town I take them here. THE hospitality is amazing and they really go out of their way to take care of us. I can't tell you exactly what they did for us... because it can't be expected or anticipated that they could do it for everyone...

The food is great and very tastey!!!!!

My girlfriends took me to Philip Marie for a birthday brunch over last weekend. It was one of the best mornings out we've had in a while. Our server was a darling. She was very attentive despite how busy it was, being the middle of brunch and all. All three of us did the mimosa special, $16.95 for food and all you can drink mimosa not really a hard decision. Plus my crab cake Benedict was perfect.

I always tell people that I think of Philip Marie as 4-star food at 2-star prices. The menu is varied and fun and the staff has always been pleasant to me and the guests I have brought to the restaurant. I don't live in the neighborhood, but find the atmosphere and the food well worth the trip.

My favorite things: Oysters Rockefeller (with goat cheese, bacon and creamed spinach), the Wild Boar (like a pork loin, wrapped in pancetta and served with a delicious sauce - I've had it with three sauces over the years - a gorgonzola cream (my fave), a fig sauce and an apricot sauce (I think that's what they've been serving lately), and the Chicken Pot Pie - just delicious. The double stuffed porkchop is also good - just too large for my diet! Menu is varied with interesting items - everything from Elk and Ostrich to Chicken to Duck... oh, yes, the Duck breast is another stand out for me.

The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced, usually also with some special offerings -- and several wines you don't normally see on a menu -- a terrific Sancerre and an outstanding Gavi.

The restaurant itself is beautiful... suitable for a romantic dinner or a business lunch. Be sure to give yourself a little tour of the downstairs when you go... the party room and wine room for two are really interesting and, it's my understanding the building has a bit of history itself... it was stop on the Underground Railroad back in the day.

Brunch, Lunch, Dinner - This is really my favorite restaurant in the city!

I had had a late night before and didn't want to get out of bed early but my friend insisted we go to brunch. We walked around the west village for a bit and ended up at Philip Marie. It was kind of late for brunch but we got in. We lucked out on an outdoor table which was fun, its a great little corner. Then the all you can drink mimosas and fried green tomato blt perked my right back up. Our server was so sweet and helpful, she was an absolute doll. Then before we knew notice time flew and it was dinner time. Being that my friend and I have the appetites of much larger people we ended up staying for a bit of dinner. We had a different server by that point but he was really helpful as well. They thought it was cute that we didn't want to leave. He helped me decide on the Sea Bass which was amazing it had this great sauce. My friend ended up doing the wild boar special. Neither of us had ever had anything like it and I was surprised at how much I like it. I'm not usually a pork fan but that dish won me over. I'm bringing my friend for her birthday.

We had the pleasure of spending an evening at Philip Marie during our most recent trip to NYC. We are well traveled and have had the pleasure of dining in some of the nicest restaurants in the country. THIS place will definitely become a regular visit.

The food was incredible. Small but diverse menu with great accent dishes. The wine list has a stunning variety.

The atmosphere reminds me of a corner bistro in a small European village but with the eclectic "hip" feeling that this part of NYC is known for.

Our waiter was polite, prompt and helpful. The busboys were quick and swooped in without being noticed or interrupting conversation.

We will return here without any shadow of a doubt. 10 out of 10!

Let's start with the positive - the food here is phenomenal I really love it this is probably one of my top 5 spots in NYC! The decor and atmosphere is great the only downside is that sometimes the service is not all that great I guess it really depends on who is serving you !

I went there with my boyfriend and another couple on Friday night. The first waiter we had was incredibly snotty and it kind of felt like he was stunned he was reduced to this kind of work. The main waitress was great. However, there was at least 3 busboys hovering around at any moment to clear plates. Which means that our app/salad plates were cleared one by one until the last person had to eat ALONE and while the rest of us were watching. Very much a pet peeve of mine. The snotty waiter cleared our drink glasses without asking if we'd like another. The entrees were good but same deal with the clearing. I told not one, not two, but THREE ppl (two busboys and what seemed to be the manager) to leave the plates until everyone was done eating. I gave up on the fourth.Snotty waiter (why we had two i don't know) literally reached over me to clear my friend's plate on my other side. He could have sat in my lap. On top of that, my friend and bo yfriend ordered the same meal. Her portion was about 2x as much as my boyfriends. We used a groupon and the bill was removed, changed to add a 20% service charge. Not written anywhere. Funny thing is, I had the bill figured out with a 20% tip because i'm programed to tip with mediocre service. Reason I won't go back? Service wasn't worth 20% and they had nerve to demand it.

A good friend of mine recommended this place for Sunday brunch, so i called and made a reservation a week in advance. When we got there it was just getting busy and so we had to wait a few minutes until we got seated. What my friend didn't tell me is that on Sundays they have unlimited Bloody Marys for $17, on top of having a great brunch menu. I ordered Eggs Benedict, which were perfectly done ( i order the same thing anywhere i go). Our food came out fairly fast, and the server checked on us and was very attentive.

The night that we came in they had a Jazz band playing which was lovely and it set a good mood. Its a very romantic place, so it was a good choice for our date night. The food was good and the portions were good sized. One of my favorite things that we tried was the baked brie, i recommend that everyone tries that appetizer. Also the service is amazing, the hostess was really pleasant and the servers were extremely attentive and our waters were always filled.

A friend and I were wondering around west village looking for a place to eat and somehow we ended up at this place. From the outside it looks like a little house, super cute.We got the right when the menu changed from lunch to dinner, and since we werent starving we just split dish and a salad. Our server, jen was super nice and when we asked her for recommendations she was extremely helpful. She recommended the Citrus salad, which was light and delicious. WE also got ravioli which was really good and filling. we are for sure coming back soon

My family, friends and I have been coming to Philip Marie for years and it is one of our favorites. The food is unique and delicious and we have grown quite a fondness for the staff. Recently they had a Mardi Gras party (our 2nd time attending) and it was fantastic. They had an amazing band (the gotham playboys from bruce springsteens old band) and everyone was enjoying the food and having a blast. The only snag in the night was a very disrespectful couple (see roomspimps review ((classy name by the way)) )who began causing a scene about an invalid coupon when the dinner was reasonably priced as is. The disgusting guy threatened to kill the waiter if he didnt apply the coupon. Some people could use a good lesson in acting like a human being and not a couple of homeless animals. But alas they eventually left and real life resumed at this amazing, authentic west village restaurant. Love you Philip Marie and theres some good customers out there looking out for you for all your years of great service!

Tonight I had the misfortune of going to Philip Marie. This was my first and last visit to this horribly crowded dump on the corner of Hudson & 11th ST. We had reservation for 9:30 PM and when we called no one informed us that there was a special Mardi Gras celebration going on and that there was a pre-fixed menu. We had purchased a special discount coupon from restaurants(dot)com and when we sat down we told our waiter this was the case. He informed us that they do not accept coupons on ??holidays? and he could no take it for our meal. We referred him back to the lack of disclosure at the time we made the reservation and decided to check with the manager. Upon his return we were informed that they would make a ??special exception? for us.

The menu was what a New Yorker, who has never been to Louisiana, might mistake for New Orleans cuisine. Bland red beans and rice with over cooked shrimp, a gumbo that was at best edible, Cajun chicken or catfish, Jack Daniels (Kentucky-Duh) braised lamb shank, and of course pulled pork. The best thing I can say about the food (and the service for that matter) is that it was served quickly. It was not the worst dinner I have ever had but, since I have been to The Waffle House, the bar is not all that high.

The thing that completed the evening was when our new waiter (the one that took our order having left for the evening) presented us with the bill. My partner explained that we had a coupon and the waiter said ??oh yes, I have it right here? and then pulled it from his apron. He disappeared in the back for a moment and then came back to tell us that coupons were not accepted on ??holidays?. We again explained that we had checked with the waiter when we ordered and he had gotten it approved by the manager. Again he disappeared into the back and returned with an obnoxious little man claiming to be the manager. It turns out that the owner had approved the use of the coupon but Flo??s little brother had not gotten the memo.

We received no apology from the little jerk (who it turns out was not the manager but some sort of assistant) nor from the actual manager. My partner and I were looking for a nice dinner after an event we were attending in the area. What we got, with no prior warning, was a cramped, dank restaurant with a loud pseudo-Cajun quintet. To make the evening complete we got the worst service I have ever had in Manhattan. Stay away, you have been warned!

Pros: Too small to offend more than 50 or 60 per night

Cons: Bad food, atmosphere and especially service

Stopped in not knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. We were seated quickly and ordered wine as it seemed to be what most people were doing. Though we don't know a whole lot about wine we knew we wanted a white zin and the waitress suggested a great one for us. The menu is very interesting and varied which is a huge plus for me because I normally get stuck ordering the same old meals. But in this case I had a hard time deciding. I had a chicken breast with brie and pesto and it was excellent. We said we would come back and were told to come for brunch so we will! Thanks Philip Marie

I have been to Philip Marie for their brunch and dinner a couple times and always enjoyed.
They recently changed most of their menu and to my surprise I easily replaced my favorite meals there (though they did keep most my favorite appetizers).
I had an salmon & chive burger that was delicious and my boyfriend had a cream of tomato soup and open steak sandwich. We were both very pleased.
Our waitress was great and she had served us before so we had fun chatting with her.
My friends and I love it @ Philip Marie and it represents the classic nyc village restaurants you read about. Hope the reviewers stop in and have the same enjoyable experiences we have had!

Yesterday me and my husband went there because of citysearch reviews and thier menu online. When we got there, we found out that they changed the entire menu and made the prices higher. Inspite of this, we ordered mussels and salmon entree. The mussels were okay, nothing special. But the salmon turned out to be horrible, we cook it at home much better even though we are not cooks. So what are they so priced up? To look just fancy?

May be the worst food I've ever had in NYC (tied with nearby Tartine). I don??t know where the rave reviews come from; perhaps there are two Philip Maries in the area and I just happened to have gone to the wrong one.

Food was bland, poorly prepared and over-priced. My Mediterranean sea bass had a muddy freshwater fish taste (my guess it was tilapia). The fish was uncooked in the middle and was covered in some type of brown sweet sauce - strange combination. I sent it back and got the salmon instead, which too was awful.

The duck breast was too lean and overcooked; tasted like rubber disks, again with an inappropriate sauce. The oysters Rockefeller were soggy with no flavor.

There are many good restaurants in the West Village. I advise you to avoid this one.

Just came home from a great meal. We were a group of eight coming together from all over the world and we were all impressed with the preparation and beautiful presentation of the food here. The service was also friendly and attentive. Can't remember when I last had such an all-around good experience.

I came here for dinner with my boyfriend on a Sunday and it was their Sunday night barbeque special. My boyfriend got the catfish with mac&cheese and greens and I tried some, it was delicious. I didn't do the BBQ deal, but I did get the Mediterranean Sea Bass which was, honestly, the best meal I've had all year. Will definitely be coming back, and would like to try their brunch.

It may be a little crowded on Saturday's, but it's brunch in NYC, so you can't really ask for a quiet atmosphere. Other than the noise it was a great brunch. The food was amazing, and good portion sizes too. The service was great, our waitress was very nice, and checked up on us the perfect amount of times. And I never had to ask for more water or mimosa's, it was just always their. I'll make it a point to come here often for brunch in the city.

Philip Marie is a wonderful restaurant in the West Village. The food is amazing and the chefs specialties are fantastic! The service was pretty good. Great place for a Romantic evening. I know I got my money's worth and I felt like i was treated more than fair. I will definitely be back here. They also do Brunch which I think we will check out next time.

I went here with my boyfriend to enjoy a nice meal before walking around manhattan all night. The food was great, I had the artichoke stuffed chicken, and he had the special of the day: flatiron steak. Both dishes were great, and then we shared the pumpkin fritters..even more delicious. It is now are favorite place to go out for dinner whenever we are in manhattan

I brought my girlfriend here on a Brunch date and it was fantastic! They had outdoor seating and on top of the brunch being one of the best i've had in a long time it came with unlimited bloody marys. The server was funny and nice and checked on us the perfect amount of times (which is surprisingly rare). We stayed for drinks after eating and almost considered staying for their BBQ the same day (I guess it is every sun) but we had full satisfied stomachs so we will be trying that in the next couple of weeks. Thanks Philip Marie.

I went here for lunch today . The restaurant was not crowded yet we had the worst experience imaginable.

1st i was told the Coca Cola soda gun was not working. then the waitress could not figure out who ordered what and could not understand English. She would put plates down and then take away. just to come back minutes later with the same burgers. a few folks were served and finished before the rest of us were even served.
I finally received my burger well after everyone else were done eating and it was raw. not rare but raw although i ordered Medium. one meal never even made it out until 20 minutes after we were all done eating and had to remind the waiter it was ordered.

This place was horrible. I would stay away.

I recently went to Philip Marie and found out their special of the day was a four course wine tasting. My party (a little reluctant at first not knowing how the portions would be) finally decided to do it. It was amazing! It included wild boar ravioli and a roasted leg of lamb that were absolutely delicious. And though i don't know that much about wines i loved the whole process of tasting while they describe them. The atmosphere was cozy and we all had a great time.

I've been going to Philip Marie about six times a year for seven years, though I don't live in the neighborhood.. I love it--inside, outdoors, any time of day or year, for lunch, brundh, dinner. The menu is interesting, wine list is super, the service is always pleasant, and I love to take out of towners there for a "real New York bistro" experience. My favorite at lunchtime is the parsley salad with ham. What a great idea! And so delicious.
Thanks, Philip, and thanks, Marie. (I wish I remembered your first names.)

I have been dining in the village for many years now and Philip Marie is by far my favorite restaurant.
The food is magnificent (my personal favorite being the baked brie appetizer) and is pleasant to look at as well taste. Their dinner items include everything from inside-out burgers to maine lobster ravioli. I have brought everyone i know from friends to family and they have all been more than satisfied.
The decor is beautiful and i recommend taking a date to dinner in their private tasting room. It doesn't get more romantic than this (quoted by my girlfriend after our dinner)
The staff is incredibly pleasant and professional and will not hesitate to help you decide on a fantastic wine from their large selection.
Anyone looking for an excellent night out should go to Philip Marie

Ive been back for brunch a few times and each time is just as great of an experience as the last. I prefer the Unlimited Mimosa special on Saturdays. The waitstaff is always friendly and accommodating. Never an empty glass on the table. I HIGHLY recommend this joint!

Well girlfriend, it was another Thursday and we chose Philip Marie as our place for drinks and starters. This was a good choice. Firstly, the barkeep was friendly and invited us in, making us feel perfectly at home. We came before it became crowded and so we had him to ourselves, however, he was still very attentive even as the restaurant filled up. Clearly a popular place. And we could see why. We had 2 plates: the smoked salmon with goats cheese on toasts was a winner. Simple and perfectly balanced. Then we tried the quesadilla which was spectacular - gooey in all the right places, but with grilled chicken that stood up to the melted cheese and soft and (not too filling) tortilla. The wine was good and the mixed drinks (vodka and selzer) were standard. This is a great neighborhood place.

While waiting for a table near by we discovered Philip Marie... Good wine list, great service! If we didn't have to meet folks elsewhere I would have loved to stay for dinner. Definitely on my list of places to return to.

Last week my boyfriend took me to Phillip Marie for our one year anniversary. We dined in their private wine room in the lower level of the restaurant. We had five courses, and each was paired with a different wine. Our server guided us through the whole meal and was very knowlegable. The courses were varied and paired very well with the wine. My boyfriend and I have both traveled to Napa and we were impressed by the selection of California wines. The lighting in the room was a little too dim and romantic. Fortunately, the menu was dictated to us by our server. Overall, it was a lovely experience and would definitely return.

I've been to Phillip Marie for dinner, for lunch, for brunch, and for a large party special occasion. In every case, the service was friendly but unobtrusive, the ambience was pleasant and the food was impeccable. They manage to accomplish all this without robbing you blind. Sure it's not super-fine dining, but this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC nonetheless. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be there at least 3 times a week. Fantastic!

My husband and I opted for the couples private room dinner (wine room) for our anniversary and it was such a waste of money. The place was so cramped and hot and suffocating. People kept coming down to the bathroom, which was right next to our room, and standing in the doorway peeking in. It was not romantic, but instead irritating and annoying. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. It's a nice idea but it does not work well.

This has been the best experience of my life!!! The wines that were chosen were so well paired with little plates. For only $25 per person with 5 tastings, where else can you find something like that??? The service is superb, from the knowledgeable staff and the attentive busboys and the lovely manager there! Finally, me and my boyfriend found a hot spot that we'll be going back for more and more! I cant wait to go back again!

I took my fiance here a couple of weeks ago for a private birthday dinner in the wine room. We did have to wait a little while (15 mins or so), but the staff was very friendly about it and comped our drinks at the bar. The wine room is small and lovely. The bottles of wine, candlelight and soft music create a beautiful atmosphere. It really felt like a special occasion. Our server was very helpful and accommodating as we selected our menu and the food, though not the most creative, was very good. The wine pairings were great, and we had a lovely time. The restaurant itself seems really quaint and we will definitely go again just to eat from the regular menu. For the personal attention and beautiful atmosphere the wine room is a great value.
