At Philip Marie, our main dining room is fashioned as an upscale American bistro. The lower level offers a glimpse of the unique style that separates Philip Marie Restaurant from any other historic or American cuisine restaurant. We pride ourselves in making sure your dining experience is nothing less than exceptional. Our brunch is fantastic with many specials. Our live jazz is amazing and upbeat! We know you'll absolutely love your dining experience at Philip Marie in New York City. Chef John Philip Greco's inventive American cuisine is the fusion of familiar American tastes and flavors joined with an assortment of various influences associated with fine American cuisine. Meals like Smoked Chicken Gumbo, Grilled Organic New Zealand Mint Glazed Lamb Chops and Pumpkin Fritters with Wet Walnuts are an example of Greco's creative fusion. Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Owner/chef John Philip Greco and his wife Suzanne Marie Lonzar put together their middle names to create the French-sounding moniker for their wholly American restaurant. The space is cozy and welcoming: Large murals depict country landscapes and simple pleasures, while the smell of hearty food lets you know that some of those pleasures await you.

The Food
This hidden gem charms crowds with a carefully prepared, market-fresh New American menu. Servers start the meal by bringing a kettle full of steamed Prince Edward Island mussels in lightly seasoned broth. Generous dishes such as grilled spinach and artichoke heart-stuffed chicken breast with tangy citrus sauce and garlic-basil mashed potatoes offer a pleasing balance of flavors and textures. The pork chops and grilled sirloin steak are prime cuts. Comfort-food side dishes such as an extra-creamy bowl of creamed spinach are recommended.

After hearing some friends rave about the great food and moderate prices, my husband and I could not resist. Sadly we were so extremely disappointed. The restaurant was not all it was cracked up to be in fact I would venture to say that it was nothing short of a glorified diner. The silver wear was not clean, and there was an overpowering stench coming from an undetermined place. The food was defiantly unremarkable. I would NOT recommend eating at this establishment in the future, and I am shocked to hear that it has been open for quite a few years who let that one slip?! Diners be ware.

Pros: thumbs down

Cons: we will never recomend this place EVER

Amazing atmosphere and featuring incredible tastes and attention to detail. I always have great service and fine cusine. In addition to the fabulous menu, there are always innovative specials making it so hard to decide what to select.

It is definitely a great place, and one you will keep going back!

Ratings_icons Jazz brunch, very new york

nycfoodie5

I dont know what that person was talking about. Maybe she or he was having a bad day. I LOVE the brunch, its great food, affordable and i think the jazz band was fantastic. Where else can you get sweet potato pancakes?!?!?! Its a bit crowded, but welcome to NYC BRUNCH!!!!! I say go there and find out for yourself. My wife and I simply love it!!

Pros: affordable and cozy

Cons: a little crowded

Ratings_icons Why why WHY is this place recommended for brunch?! Or for anything?

dkg222

I specifically made a reservation here for brunch because Citysearch recommended it as one of the 10 best (!?) brunch spots. I will never trust a Citysearch recommendation again, because this place offered an utterly mediocre brunch. Not even mediocre, but just plain BAD. The quality of food was identical to what I would get at my local diner, and the presentation was just as unlovely. The service was poor. My blueberry pancakes tasted like baking powder, my friend's scrambled eggs looked as if they were just scraped off a cafeteria grill and slid onto her plate, the waitress forgot our orange juice and maple syrup and had to be reminded to go get them. I can't believe I actually went out of my way to go to brunch here, and I was actually embarrassed that I had offered to treat my friend to brunch and THIS was what I treated her to. I am convinced that this restaurant has enlisted friends of the owners to concoct positive reviews for Citysearch in order to bring in business---which wouldn't even be such a bad thing if the food and service lived up in any way to the "hype." Don't be fooled by the jazz band either--although I enjoyed the music, the restaurant is rather too small for a loud jazz band, and it hardly makes up for the utterly lackluster food and service.

Pros: The Maitre D', the jazz band

Cons: The Food, the Service, the tight space

Ratings_icons A great spot for a date

abek

What an adorable restaurant. For those of you who don't enjoy the cozy ambience of a 200 seat dining room, Philip Marie offers an intimate setting which, in my humble opinion, serves as the perfect spot for a date. The food and wine were superb, with service to match. If you are looking for a romantic, cozy restaurant with great food and stellar service, you have to give this place a serious look.

Ratings_icons smelly sidewalk, sweet servers

julietinthecity

I was a bit suckered by the fabulous reviews...thinking this was a well kept secret. Living in Ct and traveling to the city work and fun.....always want to try something new. To spite my less than glowing review (food quite nice if a little boring, very stinky sidewalk aroma, wobbly table, bad champagne...nothing really remarkable) I understand WHY new yorkers would love this place. It is low key, food is homestylish & it is affordable. I admit, I was looking for a little more excitement...but the kind hostess & waiter sent us down the street to EO, and the evening was finished with the scene and energy we crave in NY. I give it a 7.

Ratings_icons Incredible food at incredible price

alicia26

My friend and I went here after she ran the half marathon last weekend and we were starving. The food was served quickly and it was DELICIOUS!! The brunch menu was fantastic, and the mimosa (sat.) and bloody mary (sun.) brunch specials are an incredible bargain. I can't believe the prices are so reasonable for such fantastic food. The jazz music was the perfect touch for relaxing and you can rarely find such a charming and spacious area in the city - for once I didn't feel like I was slammed up against another person next to me. The manager was very helpful and came to check on our meals, and they have great weekly specials. Looking forward to my next visit!

Pros: great price, delicious food

Cons: waitress was flaky but nice

My husband and I foudn Philip Marie in the fall of 1999. For lunch we shared a sandwich and salad, with an amazing hazelnut chocolate cake (don't think they serve this anymore). Perfect. We returned for dinner a few weeks later and we continue to eat there as often as possible. The private room for 2 was our anniversary present to ourselves after the birth of our son. AMAZING!!! The service and food and wine pairings were amazing. Brunch is also fabulous. Kids are easily accomodated too.

Pros: the changing specials menu (my husband loves the game entrees)

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Great food!

emem8700

The entrees there are extremely unique. They are not plates that you would expect in every other American restaurant. There are also exquisite names for most of the dishes, such as "Dancing Shrimp." I've been there 5 times with my boyfriend now and it has became "our" restaurant. Despite my love for this Philip Marie, the food is falling slightly below my initial impression of it. Service quality depends on the waiter. There was also a recent incident in which my boyfriend's mother got a deep cut on her finger while closing the bathroom door. Overall, Philip Marie is a great place for a nice dinner. I will definitely go back for a 6th time, but I will stay away from the bathroom and any cranky waiters.

Pros: FOOD!

Cons: may be difficult to find

I'm an old man for crying out loud and have lived and eaten in over a hundred countries in this world and all over this country.

Let me tell you that there isn't a place on this earth where I have experienced, in my not-so-humble opinion, consistently superb food and excellent service.

John Greco is a genius (I should know).

One afternoon Mel Brooks was at the next table and telling John's wife how much he enjoyed the food. So I interrupted and asked, "It is really fantastic, isn't it?" He chimed back, "And the price is right, I'll tell ya!" And that is an additional perk, and comes directly from Mel and me!

So listen to me. Go to Philip Marie. Tell them I sent you. Ask for Herb, but don't believe a thing he says about me -- I'm a very nice person. And if you don't believe me, ask John Greco. Did i mention the guy is a genius? He's got a way with a spatula that's spectacula!

Ratings_icons Amazing Date Destination

jcdolphin7

Last night I went on a date at Philip Marie. Can I say it was fantastic. The food was possibly the best that we have ever ate. We started with an amazing warm mozzarella salad(to die for). We then shared the Lobster spring roll (the freshest that I have ever had). For our entrees we had a most tender wild boar and the most melt in your mouth lamb shank. The server that we had was so professional. He knew exactly what wines to pair with each course. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone who has never been. I also must say to make a reservation because the place does fill up. My sincere compliments to the chef and staff for a wonderful evening.

Pros: The food, the service, the ambiance

Cons: nothing that I can think of.

The service never fails, from the moment you step in, until your completely sated departure. The space is beautiful, romantic, welcoming. I've turned on countless friends to PM and all have had the same experiences. Toques off to John Greco, Herb Westphalen & staff.

We are clowns in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and after a nap on Thanksgiving Day, we always have our holiday dinner at Phillip Marie's. This is one restaurant where the holiday meals are as good as other days. You even get a turkey dinner to take home regardless of what you order! The presentation, food, and friendly yet professional service are always excellent and the restaurant charming. Delightful in the warm weather when you can eat outside and do some great people watching while you enjoy delicious meals. A great find in a great neighborhood.

We found PM when we purchased a Wine Cellar Dinner for Two that John had donated to a Cancer Care Auction. After having a couple of great lunches and a fabulous Australian wine tasting dinner, we finally tried the private dinner in the wine cellar - WOW! Personal server, excellent food and service with matching wines. We just gave a certificate for the same kind of evening to our newly engaged daughter. We cannot wait to do it again; dozens of friends we have sent there have only raved.

Go Philip Marie and your great manager-Herb. Thanks for enjoyable times...

This place is a fantastic little gem for all to enjoy. The hosts/owners are very friendly and they instill that quality in their servers. The food is a unique mix of cajun, american, and even some french flavors. Try the singing scallops if you are lucky enough to be there on a night where they aren't sold out or out of season. There is a private dining room in the basement, where the old colonial kitchen used to be, really a very comfortable spot. The best tables are at or near the front windows, but the whole place has "comfortable" quality to it. I have eaten there quite a few times and have never been disappointed. Bon appetit!

e61st

We stopped here on the way to another restaurant because they had 2 for 1 drinks and thought we'd try it out. The bartender could not have been nicer (or cuter) and gave us 2 coupons for a free bottle of wine for next time. After trying to get into every Mexican place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo we decided to use our coupon at Philip Marie and couldn't have been happier. We sat outside on a beautiful night, the staff was so friendly, the food was great, and the wine was wonderful. I got the dancing shrimp and the next time I think I'll get them again and get the singing scallops to accompany them. : ) Can't wait to try the brunch.

We've lived in New York for 10 years and haven't had a brunch experience as bad as this one. The coffee came cold, our waitress was in her sweats (eating a pear no less!), the staff spent most of the time eating breakfast at a separate table and neglecting customers, and the food was just god awful. Anything interesting on the menu? Sorry, they were out of it. Never again.

My husband and I dine hear at least twice a month. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere lovely, and the service very attentive. The decor is a little cheesy (gotta get rid of the murals, tree branches, and tapestry drapes), but the place feels warm and inviting. Be sure to check out the private dining areas downstairs - lovely table for two in the wine vault and the private party room toward the front of the property. Just delightful! (I'd like to recommend the squid ink lobster-filled ravioli in tomato cream sause - my favorite!!)

This place was amazing! After a terrible appetizer/drinks experience a few blocks away, we stumbled upon this oasis of welcoming staff, great service, awesome martinis and to-die-for desserts. The dining room looks cozy and romantic with candle lamps at every table, but our raucous party of 10 was welcomed with open arms and made to feel right at home. The staff - even those who had no expectation of receiving a tip - were attentive, friendly and solicitous. The biscotti gelato and carrot cake were amazing. I can't wait to try the jazz brunch.
Definitely the best kept secret in the Village!

I came here with some friends and knew nothing about it other than the owners' middle names were put together to sound french but it was an american restaurant - and I was a little worried. Turns out that was the last thing I needed to be. We sat at this cozy booth by the window and had wonderful food with great service. They were out of a couple of items we ordered so they comped a bottle of wine - very nice gesture on their part.

I hear that there are a couple of nice dining rooms downstairs that also have quite a history - including a tunnel to the White Horse Tavern (dating back to prohibition).

I think this is a good place to bring a date or even the parents. Not too expensive, good food and cozy for being as crowded as it was.

I went with three others for an early (5pm) dinner on a Saturday. Seated promptly with our reservation, though our waiter seemed pretty unconfident (or was it incompetant?). Luckily the busboys and other servers all pitched in to bring us our dishes and clear the table. Three of us had the red snapper, while the fourth had a sweet chicken dish (all on the menu I believe, not specials). All of us enjoyed our meal, and for the price (~$185, w/ tax&tip, 2 bottles of wine, 1 appetizer each, plus entrees) it was pretty impressive. Ambiance: romantic, plus a cozy feel (and not the "cozy" used to describe small apartments). Would definitely return.

After dipping into corner bistro twice to check on the line and deciding that no hamburger is worth 30 minutes in a crowded line I wandered into this place. It's a delightful little "Bistro" style restaurant. The menu looked good as did the price, and they also had a "steak burger" which sounded about my speed. Though the food took a while to arrive is was perfect beyond imagination. A huge chunk of prime usda juicy goodness along with fresh roasted tomatoes on a kind of oversized english muffin along with some very well seasoned crisscross fries, wow; just wow.
