Great food at great prices. The gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese is just right. I was there with friends in Dec 2010. writing this review because we are going back tonight.

My husband and I stumbled on this place a couple years back, and we both loved it so much we went back a couple weeks ago. It was just as we remembered: great, authentic Italian food with great prices (the best ravioli I had - only $12). They have house wines in bottles, carafes, or bottles, all at reasonable prices. I also love the portions: they're just perfect for a starter and main dish (even for a girl), whereas other Italian places tend to me portions so big you can't enjoy the menu and walk out swearing never to eat again.

Been there twice in the last few weeks. Both times had fantastic dinners, from the appetizers through the salads and pastas. Service was European style -- not pushy or rushed, but very attentive when we needed it. Friendly, warm, great place for dinner with friends. A find.

Went last night on a Saturday night and the restaurant had a great atmosphere - until the food came! All three dishes of pasta were overcooked. When we complained the waiter just said sorry.

Hopefully just a bad night....

It's a hike for most, but well worth the trip for fresh pasta and inexpensive wine and they serve up one of the best chicken cutlets in the city. A true gem.

Really great food, although a bit pricey... this is the place I go when someone is treating me to lunch. The salad with chicken is delicious, and the dessert menu is "to die for". Looking forward to my next trip there!

I went there on a second date. I love that they made rubber bands and clothespins on the menus elegant. The artichoke and asparagus specials for appetizers were lovely, and I ordered the spinich gnocci since I read good things about it on here. Yum! When it first came, it was such a big plate and the sauce was so rich I couldn't even see myself even finishing half of it, but the gnocci was in a way so light and fluffy that I nearly finished my plate. A real treat.

What a great find! I came on a recommendation of a passerby in the area, and was beyond pleasantly surprised. I lived in Italy for 4 months, and eating here was the first time that taste alone, literally, brought be right back to Firenze. Their homemade pasta is truly Italian, and the style of the restaurant itself with wall-sized windows that open to the street made the experience feel that much more Italian! Great food, great prices, well worth stopping in!

I went to Malatesta this past weekend with a few friends and absolutely loved it! Such a cute/cozy place with doors wide open so you can feel the outdoor breeze even if you're not sitting outside. Spinach gnocci was amazing but so were other dishes my friends ordered. We had panacotta for dessert. It's flan-like but a thousand times better. The best part of it all: it's not overpriced like every other Italian restaruant in NY! A 3-course meal with wine for about $40 per person. Amazing! I'm going to recommed this place to everyone.

I've been here several times and the food is always good. The joint jumps at night, so the restaurant gets noisy and crowded and you will have to wait for a table. One of the best choices in the far west village, although there are lots of other trattorias of this caliber in the village.

This is my favorite restaurant in New York. I have been coming to Malatesta Trattoria for years now, have been for every birthday, Valentines Day, every time family comes in town, and it has always been fabulous. Their menu is simple, but delicious and provides an intimat atmosphere with a helpful staff. I always order the lamb or gniocci, both are delicious, as is the spaghetti...they make all the noodles by hand, it's amazing!!!

Good food as usual and horrible service. We were having a great time with some friends, 3 bottles of wine, a lot of food, and they brought us the check in the middle of the meal without asking if we cared for dessert or coffee. I gave the check back to the manager telling him that we were not done. ten minutes later, we had just ordered more wine, dessert , coffee and the manager asked us to leave because he needed the table!!!!
we were still eating and drinking. Who do they thing they are? what's with the attitude? I have a food business
a few blocks away and this is beyond rude and unacceptable. never going back !!!!!!!!!

This place serves up simple and perfectly executed Italian food. The atmosphere reminds you of a local Italian trattoria, with the same service and settings. The wait staff is all friendly. The pasta is homemade and always fresh. The meat dishes are wonderfully done as well. They have some great Chianti to go with your meal. I would recommend the Bruschetta as an appetizer and the Tagliata Al Casale (Steak) and the Costoletta Di Agnello (Lamb Chop) for the meat courses. The best thing here is the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra, which is by far the best pasta around. Wow! The only downside to this place is the location, which is sketchy. The place is always full so make a reservation or be prepared to wait. With food like this, it is no surprise it is always full!

Keep this place a secret! Stumbled upon it last Saturday and it wound up being the most amazingly delightful dinner. The host (owner?) was very kind and seated us promptly even without a reservation. The ambiance: Simple paper bag votives. Specials on a piece of cardboard. Water served in reusable bottles. Warm and friendly. The food: superb. Grilled calamari appetizer was fresh and excellent. The gnocchi melts in your mouth. Penne arrabbiata was perfectly spicy. Coconut pudding dessert and tiramisu were second to none. The service: cordial and attentive. Completely reasonably priced.

As we were leaving, it started to rain. The host ran out after us and gave us an umbrella!

Yes, you heard it here first: meh!-latesta... went in January and experienced everything you could hope to experience from the corner Italian place: a warm ambiance, good food, a charming (and accented, natch) waitstaff... those qualities faded with subsequent visits however. The service started to fray -- e.g. a waiter was very vocally opposed to me leaving part of my omelette on a plate. Another time, when we were one of three parties in the restaurant, service was no where to be found. And lately the food simply has been less than mouth watering. As a caveat, these not quite stellar experiences all happened at brunch so maybe that's when they send their A team home to rest. Moral of the story -- tread carefully here, or at least don't go before 4 pm.

It's not Disney World, it's Malatesta. I've eaten here more times than I can count, and every time I am surprised at how it never gets old. The food, the pasta is always fresh. The service is prompt, charming and surprisingly always easy on the eyes. Despite a cash only drawback, paying is remarkably painless. An entire meal, with appetizers, wine, espresso and dessert is easy on the wallet. The spaghetti a la chiatara, the gnocchi, and the ravioli are all favorites...as is the panna cotta and profiterole. The salads are equally satisfying, esp. the artichoke. I reccommend the specials, they are always good. The wine list is worthwhile. The fact this place is a little piece of heaven, and people like heaven. It is popular. Make a reservation...or wait...it is worth it. Bring your friends for warm, family fun.

After living in Italy for 3 years, I never thought I would find food in the USA that would even be comprable. However, here I have found it. The pasta is fresh, salad is perfect...even the glasses, decor are authentic and what might find in an out of the way Northern Italian Restaurant. The ambiance is pleasant and relaxing. You can't go wrong at this place. The owner is a down to earth Italian, who recognizes me every visit no matter home much time falls between visits. He was nice enough to sit down and talk with us on our visit about memories of Italy. Also recommended is MOSTO on 2nd and 5th, which he also owns.

This restaurant is incredibly versatile. Good for dates or large groups, the casual atmosphere is as welcoming as the friendly staff when you walk in. Service is attentive but not intrusive--and can be a bit slow on busy nights, as expected. The food here is probably some of the most consistently fresh and good food I've ever had. They even let you know on the menu which pasta is homemade or not. I've never had any complaints from anyone I recommended it to. The wine list is simple, and if you're looking for luxurious vintages you're in the wrong place to begin with. The only drawback to this place is that it is cash only. However, sacrifice the prospect of bonus points/miles and enjoy a really fun, casual and almost energetic dining experience.

pros: a nice little trattoria with a quirky sensibility, good pasta, and good prices. definitely feels like a neighborhood joint. almost all the pastas are homemade (try the spinach gnocchi in gorgonzola), and the menu is relatively small but varied.
cons: mediocre wine list, cash only, and the friendly but not very professional street-clothed waitstaff. i think all 5 waiters/waitresses served our table at one point or another, which caused some confusion about what had been ordered, etc., and i got the feeling of 5 mildly competent people doing what should be 1 fully competent person's job. also, if you're sitting outside the street can get kind of loud and unpleasant.

I eat at Malatesta about once a month, and while I often sample different appetizers and desserts, rarely can I keep myself from ordering the Spaghetti alla Chitarra as my entree. They are, in a word, SQIUSITI (exquisite). And virtually unique to this restaurant. Clams and mussels in white wine are divine, and the mixed bruschetta appetizer is delicious and great for sharing. They also have a good, reasonably-priced list of wines by the 1/2 carafe, great for 2 people. Most nights there is a lively, mixed crowd (many Europeans), and always a colorful and welcoming staff, in an authentic northern Italian taverna setting.

I live across the street from this restaurant, and it is one of the best places to go for a quick bite, or to bring an out-of-towner. Almost all the pasta dishes are homemade, and the specials are great! You really feel like you are in Italy when they bring the water in old wine bottles, and the specials are hand written on a piece of paper. There is never a long wait for a table, but the place is consistantly buzzing with plenty of customers. Overall a great place if you are craving Italian!

It was like being in a trattoria in Italy- from the furniture, the decor, the waitstaff, the menus, the glasses to the actual food. With its elegant simplicity, this is a great place for a cozy dinner. And to top it off, you won't break the bank- all the food is reasonably priced, so indulge!!

Cozy, friendly, delicious. This is modern style Italian - very fresh - plates are not enormous, but the prices are very reasonable. I eat here at least 2 times per month. I don't know anyone who orders a "3 course meal", but you can eat here for under $20, easy. Only complaint - Christopher street is unappetizing - don't sit outside.

This place didn't disappoint. My fiance and I went on a wednesday night for dinner. The food was very reasonably priced and very tasty. She had a mushroom salad and cheese ravioli in pink sauce. Both were great. I had grilled calamari and the grilled monk fish special. Both were great. The wine list is small but has winners on it and the prices are well within reason. we went on a weeknight so no reservations were needed but I'm not sure about weekends.

MAN!, this is what you hope to find in NYC after you got back from an Italian vacation...
I discovered it 2 months ago and since then I'm going at least twice a week!!
SOO GOOD! The all crew is REAL Italian, funny in their inarticulated English, their manager is professional and charming with his educated manners, and the food....just affordable AND good, simple but incredibly tasty. You will just figure out soon why many celebs rather eat Maletesta than Man Ray or The Park...
IT"S THE AMORE!
Cash ONLY is really awkward but the lambchops alone are worthed the withdraw at the near ATM.
