last i went, i got a microdermabrasion facial. they obviously didn't know or care (or both) in what they were doing. immediately after the session, they pushed me to sign up for their package that requires an upfront installment payment.

the girl at the reception had a calculator at hand trying to bargain with me. i felt like i was at a flea market and felt more stressed leaving than when i came.

afterwards, my poor face peeled off scales of dry skin for the next 2 months. it was so bad people were commenting.asking if my skin was ok. there's a no refund policy and i was so upset i couldn't even get myself to pass by there for months.

it was my third time at the skincare and each time had been progressively worse treatment and customer service. NEVER AGAIN.
spare yourself, your skin and wallet and go where you'll be treated well.
you deserve it.

I have been a loyal client to Essential Skin Care for about a couple of months now. I came in with acne and splotches on my face that I just wanted to go away. They gave me: 6 Microdermabrasion with Facial, 6 alpha peel, 6 lightening treatments, 4 high frequency, and free herbal masks for like 1200 bucks. I know it sounds liek a lot but do the math, usually salons charge you 200 for micro!

I did around 4 treatments without using their products and did not get much results. However, their products work (especially the ones with glycolic acid). But don't get the ones you don't need. Just get a cleanser, toner, and medicated acne lotion. They are VERY pushy about giving you everything.

With products you will be spending some more. So maybe my 1200 became almost 1400. Still a good deal for what I got. My skin looks great now. So I really recommend them.

I have only been there once, but I plan on going back again and again. I went last week for microdermabrasion and a peel. I got a lot for my money and the staff was great. I have major skin problems such as clogged and enlarged pores and acne. I've only had one treatment and I noticed a major difference. I highly recommend this spa.

Before going to Essentials, I had never had a facial. I didn't have major acne, but I wanted to take care of some blackheads on my forehead and nose that I couldn't get rid of with over the counter products. I went to Essentials for the first time in December 2007 for a facial that was advertised for $40. I ended up leaving with a package for 5 more facials and a ton of very expensive product. At first I walked out feeling like I was crazy to spend so much more money than I originally planned, but after seeing how much clearer and brighter my skin looked, I knew I made the right choice. What really hooked me was when I ran out of the product and went back to using the over the counter stuff, the blackheads came back right away. I will admit that they do push you to purchase more, but you just have to know what you want and be firm. I have had a couple of facials already and I only need to go once every couple of months, as long as I follow my skincare regimen at home. I recommend Madeline. She's knowlegdable, efficient and friendly.

Pros: Ambience and Service

Cons: Expensive Product

I went there for a facial and was really happy with the service. (Maybe because they want to reel you in). I was asked if I want to buy a package of 6 treatments and I agreed because it was a good deal. Just be aware that during facial they will asked you if you want to purchase additional service for example cold cream to put on your face for additional charge and you can say no. I try several different girls and some are better than others but there is this one girl I hate. Unfortunately I can't remember her name. She persistently pushed products to me and ended buying them and regretting it. I returned some of them on my next visit which happen to be my sixth and never return ever since. My advice is you can try them because they service are not that bad but just be strong not to fall prey on anything ang everything they push you to buy.

I started to come for facial treatments at Essential Skin Care in April 07. I have to say, my acne problem bothered me for a very long time and I could never find something, or some treatments that would really solve this problem util I came here. After only 2 treatments my acne were all gone and I could start doing microdermabrasion starting the 3rd visit to treat my acne scars. Two more sessions down, my skin looks radiant and I haven't even finish my package yet. Essential Skin Care really solved my skin problem. THANK YOU!

I came across the Essential Skin Care after leaving the office of a licensed Dermatologist and ventured in out of curiosity. I asked the receptionist about treatments for acne scars and she quickly suggested micro-dermabrasion. Through her broken English she suggested a complete package of approx. 6 laser treatments to even out my skins' scars. I was very surprised at the prices esp. because I'd just priced the same treatment for thousands of dollars at a doctors office. This place was obviously not run by doctors. I've done much research on the effects of dermabrasion on dark skin and it's NEVER recommended but she said it wouldn't be a problem. Micro dermabrasion can leave dark skin discolored and blotchy. Red flags and my gut feeling says not to risk it. After she again attempted to sell products I asked for an exfoliation mask and she sells me a 'wash'. I leave with their business card in hand but uneasy feeling inside. I use wash at home and find the harsh micro beeds in their exfoliating creme scraping my face. If anything using it will damage my face but I will show it to my professional and lisenced Dermatologist next week. After reading the other reviews I'm glad I wasn't willing to save money on a laser treatment that in the long term may leave me looking worse . My suggestion in this and any case is to do as much research on a clinic/doctor or product before investing your money or risking your health or saftey.

Pros: Your inexpensive quick fix may result in permanent damage.

Cons: No Educated or Highly Qualified Specialist on staff.

Essential skin care does some of the best facial in New York City. I highly recommend the facialist , Dorothy. I had many treatments from her over the past few years including facials and microdermabrasion and glycolic treatments. She is very gentle and is extremely thorough and detail oriented! Excellent service given. Unlike some of the prvious customers listed, I've never had anyone there push products for me to buy. I highly recomend trying this salon for a facial.

I felt obligated to take time out to write this review, espeically for those who suffer from break-outs, etc. First of all, you don't get quality treatment. For me, they recommended that i get a package of the alpha-beta peels (six peels every other week). They leave the peel on for about five minutes. You expect peeling within the next couple of days resulting in brighter and smooth skin. That never happened. They try to sell you expensive products without even explaining what they do. After your treatment, they lay out a small yellow envelope tellling you it is for their tip. In additon, for my second appointment for a peel, they insisted I get microdermabrasion. It made my skin worse that it already was. Since I paid for the package upfront, I will be going to Essential demanding my money back. Also, they cant speak/understand English fluently.

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: product pusher, not worth the money

I had no idea what microdermabrasion would do for me and I am so glad I tried it. I had dead cells that were blocking my "shine" and "glow". Now that I had it done (with a facial) I can notice the difference in my skin.

Pros: Clean, Value

.

i went there 6 times over this past summer for 6 microdermabrasions/facials. some good things: clean, comfortable, good value.

the bad: the hard sell. big turn-off. when i try a sample product over a month and see no results (facial serum to eliminate sun spots) i do not wish to pay $65 for a tiny bottle of it. i expressed that each time when they asked if i wanted it. i understand they need to sell, but please don't do it while i'm relaxing on the table. also inconsistenecy: each facial included an extraction process. this varied in quality depending on who did it. other weirdness: sometimes i opened my eyes and there would be some strange face - a manager? - two inches from me. they would often speak in korean to each other in front of me. call me crazy, but i always found that kind of rude.

After trying tons of products & places that never work, Essential finally did. They push their products (MD Formulations) because they ACTUALLY work. The staff is honest, helpful and effective. They don't sugarcoat the info they give you about your skin; their honesty is valueable to the results you'll receive. My 1st visit was for microdermabrasion, afterwhich i bought a package & several products for upkeeping. The results have been incredible! I reccommend Essential & their products to everyone. The holes in the wall are the secret treasures in NYC.

The astheticians don't let you relax, they just try to sell you things while you are getting a treatment. They try to upsell on the treatment your getting, packages, products, you name it. It's definitely not a bargain. They say something is one hour and it's more like 35 minutes. The steam pump is week and it wasn't even left on for 5 minutes. At the end of all this they practically force you to leave a tip. Save yourself the money. Oh and one more thing, they ask you to be on time and then they take you in late for your appt. Uggh...don't go.

I had problem skin and went there following their ads. Felt very good about the service at the first time and signed up a package. When I went back for the second time, I already much better about my facial skin. I strongly recommend for the people who have problematic skin.

Semi-basement, not-big space, but feel warm/cozy. Not as fancy as those salons on madison or 5th ave. I guess that's why they're having good deal, sort of cost-effective - you pay the service not the rent I do like their facial services. It's worh of 1 -1.5 hours, pretty relaxing. Though they push products, it's up to you. I just bought some of their recommended one, those i need.

This spa offers good deals on its services in order to get you in the salon and HEAVILY push its products. Despite my commuicating numerous times that I wasn't interested in ANY products, I still was pressed hard. In addition, I was not at all pleased with my facial. Normally, my skin feels smooth and refreshed, this time it felt heavy and greasy and didn't look nice at all despite taking almost two hours. If you feel a good deal is time spent, go here, if you like good results, go somewhere else.

Tried their microdermabrasion. I like the result. Comparing other places' microdermabrasion, it is a nice deal doing there. I felt getting more personal attention. It'a a warm, cozy place. Also I bought a holiday gift from them for my sister - not bad idea to get that.
