Oceana Restaurant

★★★★☆
All varieties of seafood and shellfish are prepared here with one goal in mind: to enhance the simple perfection of each ingredient. The food is neither complicated or intimidating. From the crab cakes or wild striped bass ceviche to other signature dishes such as grilled loup de mer or butter poached lobster, dining at Oceana is a totally gratifying experience. Three-course prix fixe menus are de rigeur here. Chef Ben Pollinger, formerly at Tabla, ensures the continuity of quality and success here. A small note: while the majority of the patrons are suit-and-tie, the dress code has seemingly relaxed in the days since Oceana's rebirth, and one might dine in a t-shirt and jeans unmolested these days.

Had a work function here downstairs. Private and elegant. Food is absolutely delicious. Quiet location so you don't have to worry about getting a taxi. Monkey Bar is across the street for an after dinner drink!

I was totally disappointed with my recent visit to this restaurant and will not return again. It was several years since I last ate there and I was very excited to return. Unfortunately, this restaurant is a shadow of what it previously had been. The meal was totally unremarkable and portions were so tiny that I left hungry. (First time ever, for a thin woman who eats out often!!!) Service was OK but not up to the level of our other top restaurants in NYC. The only part that was positive was the dessert which was creative, complex and tasty. Choose to spend your money and time elsewhere. Oceana is living on reputation for past performance.

Pros: Dessert--pastry chef is the only shining star

Cons: mediocre food, ridiculously tiny portions, average service

.

The restaurant decor is pleasantly eye pleasing ,and the service was great and what you would expect from a restaurant "of this reputation." Having said that, we were greatly disappointed by the small portions of the meal, especially given the price ($78 prix-fixe). We actually had to grab a bite from a fast food restaurant afterwards. We were also charged $7 for a glass of cranberry juice which contained nothing more than a squirt of syrup and tap water. Given the state of the economy, the owners should either lower the prices or make the meals worth the price. It is not a matter of being cheap or unable to afford the meal. But if I am going to pay a certain price, I expect to leave the restaurant satisfied. The bottom line is the restaurant is worth trying just to say you have tried it, but certainly will never return again.

Pros: Great service

Cons: The food was not worth its price. Very, very tiny portions and there is nothing special about their fish dishes.

.

The portions sizes are perfect. In this world of super-sized meals, I was so happy to actually finish a meal and not feel like I was about to explode. I felt completely satisfied at the end of the meal.

For appetizers we had the crab cake appetizer and the tomato salad. For entrees we ate the swordfish, lobster. I'd never had swordfish before, and I'm regretting every moment I've lived not knowing about this fish. Wonderful, sweet texture and taste.
For dessert we split the layered peaches & cream A great finish to the meal.

I would definitely come back

Start with the appetizers and you will be certain that this is the place for you. Once you get to dessert you will have had the time of your life. Dining as it was made to be in nyc!

Smiley, Smiley, smiley! I come here every Friday since I was eating the specials here and quietly broke out into a smile. My boyfriend was like, "whats got into you?" And i was all, "this is awesome food, let's get married". So I decided that we would come back, each Friday from now until, the cats come home. Funny thing is we have no cats! So we will eat at this seafood haven forever!!!!

The food was good but the experience was one of my worst in NYC. It was 9:00pm at Christmas Eve but after we all ordered Lobster they informed us that they didn't have any left. Then I stayed 20 min with the wine list in hand (waiting to order). Once done, I received Scallops instead of Stone Crab as appetizer. Finally they served us sweet wine when we ordered Calvados and insisted in their mistake. One advice: Find another place.

In all fairness, it should be noted that pgmclaughlin is one of the owners of Oceana. However, Markyb definitely should have taken note of the size of the cheeseplate--I defy anybody to find a larger cheeseplate at a more fair price anywhere in the city-- and the wine list offerings; Oceana also has a sizable 1/2 bottle list.

I must take time out and make mention of the silly review posted by markey2b. Markey2b seems to be stuck on the pricing structure of an incredible seafood restaurant with lots of snap and dazzle. Oceana has always been a prix-fixe and not a la carte since it's inception 15 years ago. Markey2b can't find a wine for less than $75, I would recommend that he bring his seeing eye dog next time who could point out 62 wines currently on the list for less than $75. Markey2b also has issue with an additional $9 supplement on the cheese course but fails to mention to the readers there are 9 cheeses on the cheese plate. Seems pretty fair to me. Markey2b please leave the writing to someone more capable of fairness. Many Thanks and go Oceana!!!

Pros: Powre lunch...Great three course lunch for $33

Cons: None

I made a dinner reservation at Oceana on a Friday evening after checking the reviews on various websites. Based on the reviews, it seemed like an excellent choice. I was so surprised by what I found that I joined Citysearch for the sole purpose of posting my own review of Oceana. The atomosphere at Oceana is very nice and pretty sedate. When we recevied our dinner menus, we noticed the menu was all prix-fix and did not offer any alternatives. We were both very surprised by this as none of the reviews or websties I read mentioned this very important fact. The prix-fix menu was $78.00 for three courses, which isn't that bad except that the portions were pretty small and the food was average, at best. When we received the dessert menu, I was thrilled to see a cheese course on the menu, and I knew right away that is what I wanted to order. Unfortunatley, the cheese course was an additional $9.00 on top of the $78.00 prix-fix charge. Oceana did have a very extensive wine list, but I didn't see a bottle on the list under $75.00. The best thing about our dinner was the service. The service was excellent from the moment we walked in the door until the moment we left. Unfortunatley, it was not good enough to entice me to ever return to this restaurant. I don't mind paying top dollar for a great meal and fabulous dinning experience but I didn't find either at Oceana.

Brought the family matriarch here for a rather significant birthday of hers and had a wonderful meal. We ordered the three-course prix fixe and kicked it Florida-style -- the stone crab claws, served on little rounds of roasted pumpkin salad and baby spinach with a touch of curry, were super-fresh and flawless, followed by sweet, fleshy taro-wrapped pompano balanced by the hearty crunch of baby bok choy, and the warm vanilla grapefruit cake with earl grey ice cream (an unsolicited comp with a 'happy birthday' written in chocolate) was a fine denouement. An assortment of warm bread and rolls, replenished often, was another nice addition. Service was genuine and knowledgeable. We all left happy, especially mom.

I came to Oceana with my parents and my boyfriend for a nice pre-theatre dinner. To be honest, the show was supposed to be the highlight of the evening, however, all we talked about for the rest of the night was how great the meal was. We arrived slightly late due to traffic. We had called ahead and the girl on the phone was very pleasant, assuring us that it would be "no problem" and we would still be able to have a lovely meal and get to the theatre on time. We were seated promptly by a very warm and friendly host who also assured us that he would personally guarantee we would get to the show. Our waiter, Ben, was superb. He recommended several wines and helped us to choose a Portugese wine we had never heard of that was wonderful. The head waiter, Rashid was equally attentive, describing in detail every menu item and answering all our questions. I had chestnut and lobster soup for appetizer and snapper for entree. Both were wonderful. The best was the grapefruit cake for dessert WOW! We never felt rushed or hurried and we were out by 7:30pm just as the host promised.

My date and I were in the neighborhood and were craving oysters and champagne. We stopped in Oceana. The dining rooms are prix fixe only but they have a lounge on the second floor with comfy booths and soaring ceilings. It ain't cheap, but then again you get what you pay for. The oysters were perfect, served with caviar, and the champagne selection extensive. Very romantic. My date and I were impressed.

Went here for an anniversary dinner. Service was slow, our entrees arrived a good 30-35 minutes after our appetizers were cleared. The quality of the food here isn't the problem, our fish was tasty and the wine was good, it's just way too overpriced for what it is. The best part of the meal was the dessert, to be quite honest.
You can find better seafood restaurants in the city in regards to value. Another drawback was the nautical (or as we said, NOTical) decor, it was really corny.

I hope our experience was an exception to the norm at Oceana. Our experience was bad on so many fronts that I wondered if the entire staff had been sacked and we were being served by the newly-hired replacements.

Trouble started for our party of ten on this Monday night when we were left for quite a while after being seated before a waiter came by at all. Surprising, but not too troubling yet, as the restaurant was busy.

The appetizers - once they came - were the highlight of the meal. I had a scallop ceviche that was very bright and citrusy. Others at the table raved about their octopus.

Then the real wait began. I was enjoying the company at the table and therefore was not checking my watch, but the wait for our entrees to show up was unbelieveable. Finally, one of our party complained to the staff and a manager came out to explain. His story was - and I am not making this up - that we were a big party and they were having trouble attending to our order as a result. Huh? The restaurant took our reservation for ten and seated us at a round table clearly intended for ten, but now they claim that ten was too hard to deal with?

The entrees were hardly worth the wait. My halibut was so colorless that another diner asked me why I had ordered tofu. The color was indicative of the flavor as well. The sauce underneath redeemed the halibut, but only just. The other diners agreed that the appetizers had been far more interesting.

The manager, after some prompting, comped two bottles of wine and dessert. We were all furious at the nitwit at our table that sentenced us to another interminable wait as the kitchen struggled to get ten desserts plated up.

This would have been a bad experience at a TGIFriday's, but at a place with such visual appeal and promise as this one, it was appalling.

Took my girlfriend to Oceana Saturday night and with reservations set for 9:30 pm arrived at 9:40 and was still taking promplty. The wait staff are so super friendly and make you feel right at home. One of the staff named Javier showed us so much attention I thought we were the only people having dinner. Now Im not to familiar on different wines but the staff made it so easy by the end of the night I thought I was a proffesional. The food was excellent but small in portion. The restaurant is pricey at $400.00 for 2 but with the attention your given and the quality of the food I cant wait to go back. Combine this restaurant with some dancing afterwards and you'll have yourself one hell of a night!!! Godfrey

My boyfriend have been to Oceana 3 times. Each time it was superb. When we heard that the Chef had left, we decided to try it. It was much different. We felt rushed through our meal, although our waiter was very nice. The appetizers were barely edible. The ravioli was terribly oversalted, and the loup de mer with potatoes had a strange odor. When I asked to see a manager, we were told that he was busy. Overall, a big letdown.

I've been here twice (once with my girlfriend for my birthday and another time with family from out of town) and everyone involved enjoyed the food and ambiance tremendously. Unlike many upscale restaurants, Oceana is quieter and modest. The atmosphere is never pretentious and intimidating and the staff is friendly and accomodating. My girlfriend and I had the tasting menu (if you decide to order it, everyone at the table must order it) and it was one delectable dish after the other. Each dish has its own very unique flavor, and everything is small enough so that you will not get too full for the next dish. We opted to have one bottle of red but you also have the option of having the kitchen pair wines with each dish. I am not much of a dessert person but at the end of the night we were presented with about 6 to 8 desserts on two platters which were delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The best seafood in NYC, bar none. The menu changes regularly, but I've always found something (usually several somethings!) that appeal. All of the dishes are expertly prepared, and I have yet to be disappointed with a meal. The desserts aren't quite as good as the rest of the food, but they aren't bad either. The service is generally attentive without being intrusive, and the ambiance is calm and serene without being boring.

My boyfriend brought me to Oceana for Valentine's Day and I was thoroughly impressed. Our six-course prix fixe dinner was delightful. Admist the soft drone of conversation we were served each small but perfectly-prepared course in a timely fashion. The seafood chowder was unbelievable as was the dessert plate which featured a plethera of sweet treats. We were served two kinds of fish, both fresh, light, perfectly balanced in flavor. It was wonderful to sit down to a dinner so thoughtfully orchestrated - each course was different, offered an original palette of flavor, and a pleasant surprise. We dined on the main floor and found the atmosphere to be calmingly quiet (perfect for conversation) and strangely relaxing as well. Although the meal came with a high price tag it was an experience that will stay in my memory!

Went here for Valentine's Day. The restaurant is nicely decorated, not overderdone. We were seated before our reservation time, and the staff was very nice. I sat to find red wine stains on my napkin and bread plate. Not what you'd expect from such a place. The food was good, nothing over the top. And a dinner for 2 was over $300, in my opinion not worth it at all. Many other fine restaurants in NYC with better food for less money.

I went to Oceana for a business dinner with other 5 people. It turned out to be a huge disappointment both for the puzzling "experimental" food and the unexpectedly inadequate service.
Food was completely disappointing. Despite the undisputed quality of raw materials and my liking of fusion cuisine, most of the chef's daring combinations tasted like freaks, born of a failed experiment. My tartare of fish was overwhelmed by wasabi and other spices and the sea bass was very disappointing, with unbalanced additions of oriental spices. My negative experience was unforunately shared by most of my colleagues, with one exception: a guy who ordered a plain beef fillet.

Service was disappointing too with staff behaving rudely and incapable of smiling at customers.

Finally the price (a quite expensive $115 each) was completely out of touch with the reality of the food we had.

Unfortunately this is definitely a NO GO.

Sadly I found a hair in my food. I pretty much have eaten at every venue known to man. Hey it happens, but their staff's attempt to fix the issue was disgraceful, especially for a "high-end" restaurant. I still paid $200+ for my appetizers and my other-halves meal. I was not even offered a glass of wine or desert as a, "I am sorry." SHAMEFUL. As I mentioned to the maitre-dee, "My past experiences at with an order of filet-fish at McDonald's have been more pleasant!"

I actually joined citysearch for the sole purpose of adding a negative review for this restaurant. The service was terrible. My date is allergic to dairy products, and this was explained to the waiter, who confirmed he understood. She was restricted to ordering 2 appetizers rather than a main course, (but we were still charged for a main course due to the price fixed nature of the menu). And to top it off, one of her dishes was still made with dairy! Don't eat here if you have any food allergies, because they really don't care if you get sick. Pretty lousy service for a $300+ dinner.

Pros: none

Cons: service

I went to Oceana for my birthday. My husband could not get reservations at Le Bernardin, so he decided to take me here. What a wonderful birthday surprise! We were cheerfully greeted & seated at a beautiful corner banquette..very romantic. The service was outstanding; very attentive, but never intrusive. Then there was the food, which was artfully presented & too delicious for words. I highly recommend the Loup de mer. Dessert was equally as impressive. Overall, I would say run, don't walk to Oceana. You will not be disappointed by the stellar service, wonderful food & understated elegance!

I came here for lunch with a group of four. We were seated immediately, although the restaurant was surprisingly busy for a midtown place. We sat on the second floor. The decor was very interesting and pleasant. The service was impeccable - just as it should be. The soft-shell crab appetizer was very tasty and I am told the tuna tartare was wonderful. The swordfish entree was good, but could not compare to that at Town. Another person in our party, however, thought it was excellent. Two of my companions had two different kinds of seabass and loved it. Everyone loved the desserts. Overall, the dining experience was excellent and I will be returning to this restaurant. If you go, be aware that the menu is almost entirely seafood, and that although jackets are not required, many guests will wear them.

I can see why this restaurant has rated so high. I have been to many fine restaurants and this is one of the best. The last 2 times I have been to New York, I have made reservations weeks in advance so I am sure not to forget. Beautiful atmosphere, fabulous food, and exceptional service.

We arrived and were seated promptly--so far so good. We were then given a complimentary palate appetizer which we couldn't eat (one of our party is pesco-vegetarian, the other is allergic to cheese). While these initial apps seemed inventive (pureed artichoke with bacon reduction in a shot glass), the wait staff should have asked before presenting them. Many of the appetizers and entrees have meat or cheese which severely limited our choices and you can't order a la carte, only the 3-course price fixed meal. The tuna tartar was overwhelmed by the horseradish and ginger. My skate with pastrami(!)--at least I can eat meat--was so salty that is was virtually inedible. The deserts were good but not stellar. The bill was nearly $200. For $100 per person, I expect a much better meal. Very disappointing.

In a city packed to the gills with fine seafood restaurants, not one comes close to the consistently exceptional dining experience that is Oceana. The decor and ambience is great, albeit a little muted in the main dining room - turn the jazz up guys - but the food is the main event. The tuna tartare is outstanding, and the mains extraordinary The John Dory with leeks and mushroom simply melts in the mouth, the unusually rich red-wine sauce perfectly accompanying it. My wife's turbot was equally delicious, as were the array of sinfully rich desserts. Throw in a terrific selection of wines, and a truly scrumptious ice-wine, and you really do have the perfect restaurant.

I went with my boyfriend to Oceana for his birthday and we were surprised by the classy, quiet atmosphere, we loved the boat-like interior and enjoyed excellent service. He wore a suit and I a dress which was appropriate. We ordered the 6-course tasting menu, his with wine pairing for $160, mine was $110 without. The quality of the wine and champagne was very good, our appetizers included lobster and shrimp, and our entrees included codfish and sea bass, all were presented creatively and in small portions. This also included a 3-course dessert tasting menu, to our surprise, when desserts kept on coming. They gave both of us each a different dessert so we ended up tasting six. It was delicious. We expected great seafood and got great dessert also.

This may be one of the last restaurants that still retains a dress code. The boys all dressed in jackets...

Much more intimate and personal than Jean Georges, and felt classier for the understated comfort. Closer to Bouley, but smaller and a bit more innovative in the food prep.

This is the place to have a nice quiet date, where the food/ambience compliments conversation. Wonderful.

I was very impressed with the quality of the seafood. It was so fresh, clean, and tasteful that I found myself trying to savour each bite. The service was exactly what this level of a resteraunt needs. At first, I was concerned that the portion size (small to medium/small) was not going to be enough to fill me up. But with so many courses, by the end of the meal I was absolutely stuffed! My Long Island Tea was perfect. I felt very comfortable, as well. Prices are of course high, but typical with this level of cooking in New York establishments.

I'm not sure what the person below was referring to. She must have spent a lot of money on wine. The entire menu is prix-fixe--for dinner it's $68 per person, which includes an hors d'ouevre plate, an appetizer, an entree, a dessert, and then that little plate they bring you after the dessert of little bite-size desserts. Did they order two entrees a piece? For $110, you can get wine matched to each course... but that would still only be $220. Hmmm. I took my parents there, we drank wine and ate FANTASTIC food, and left stuffed to the gills and it was $300 bucks. Each course was better than the next. This restaurant has won a lot of impressive awards in the past year--10,000 critics can't be wrong.

I made a reservation 1 month prior to my visit to Oceana. It was my mother's birthday. I also confirmed it 2 days before. But when we showed up - no reservation? After a little yelling, a manager helped us out. So we waited 30 minutes. My mother is old and doesn't like to wait. We finally get our table (they bought us 2 glasses of wine to make up for it) and ordered. Then 15 mins later our waiter comes back and says they ran out. Great, so we order again. Then 35+ mins later our food finally comes out. It's the wrong thing and it's cold. By the time we finally got our food it was very late. We should have left after they screwed up my reservation. And to top it all off, the bathroom was dirty. Oceana was very disappointing. Please spend your money elsewhere.

Oceana is amazing! My wife had the tuna tartar with horsradish to begin. I had the spanish shrimp which are sauteed out of the shell and served with a cawliflower puree and tangerine! Awesome flavor. The main courses were even better. My wife had the loup de mer (sea bass) with a crouton on it, basmati rice with coconut and a tamarind sauce which gave a slight sweetness to the dish. I had cod for the first time in years, I'm used to cod being bland but here it was served with creamed wheat and mushrooms with an amazing texture adding sprinkle of speck ham chips.
Desserts were out of this world I had pistachio semifreddo which consists mostly of pistachio ice cream, the best dessert I've ever had. My wife had the creme brulee also the best ever.
Service was just the way it should be: seemless,
Very impressed

I was concerned when Rick Moonen left but this brilliant new chef has put this restaurant on a whole new level. We have opted for the tasting menu twice now and I still am in disbelief as to the talent of this young, Bronx born and raised genius of the kitchen. Oceana comes at a cost but when you add up the food and impecable service you walk out with a smile. The poster who gave it a 1 because they were supposedly not happy with him wearing jeans should most kindly eat at his local diners.

Not just as far as seafood is concerned. Everything on the menu is top notch. While the $170 wine pairing is a bit pricey...it's worth every cent. This literally is, the best restaurant in all of Manhattan.

Enjoyed meals there during the previous chefs' tenures, so I was curious when I arrived for dinner last week. Food and service have not declined at all. This is a first class restaurant. Service is professional, without being stuffy. The food is extremely well executed, if not unique anymore (though I always find the American caviar exciting). Ambience is comfortable without being pretentious. Only quibbles are so-so wine service, and while Prix-fixe is reasonable at $68, extra charges for additional dishes/tastings can be high.

This past Wednesday my wife and I had dinner at Oceana and it had to be the best meal of our life. The Hamachi sashimi was ethereal and the lobster pumpkin ravioli was sensuous. The service was attentive and as it good as it gets anywhere in New York. The new chef has taken Oceana to new heights. Four stars all the way.

I went to Oceana on Thursday, November 14 and to my surprise they had a new chef. The previous chef and menu were excellent and I did not mind paying $200 and upward for a great meal and wine. However, this new chef, menu and wait staff is disappointing at best. I spent $280 for dinner for two and the waiter acted as if we weren't there. The food, for lack of better word, sucked. Take my advice there are better seafood places in New York (i.e. Aquagrill, Le Bernadine, Grand Central Oyster Bar, and City Crab) to name a few.

If you are a dinner who, however, does not mind spending a lot of money in exchange for inferior tasting food and service then you should go to Oceana. Just my 2 cents, which coincidently is more than what anyone, should spend at Oceana.

My father and I went to Oceana on Saturday, Nov 9, and must have stayed for 3 or 4 hours savoring our wonderful time there. Each dish contained flavor after flavor, each so unique - a treat for the taste buds ... I would go again and again. Such attention to detail and wonderful service.

It's a cozy seafood restaurant offers sushi quality fish. The three course dinner includes a high end dessert menu. The dining space is lovely, but the powder room could be upgraded.

Oceana, was a great experience from beginning to end. Started off with perfectly mixed martinis while we waited for our party. Service was imbeccable, Maitre'd was attentive, friendly and in general perfect. One in our party doesn't eat seafood, not only did they bring out a lobster bisque without the lobster they specifically brought out a chicken dish for her that was not even on the menu. Keep in mind this is a strictly seafood place. Any high end place that is willing to go above and beyond have got a client for life. Thanks for everything!

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we both agree...definitely one of the best seafood places that I've been to. The jumbo lump crab cake was amazing as was the seabass. If you've got a sweet tooth, go for the creme brulee, simply one of the best in town. Granted, it is a little steep, but the service was impecable, the decor was tasteful AND we closed the place out. Well done! I will definitely be back for more. Oh, btw, if the price is not right, go upstairs for the cafe.

This is the second time I've eaten here for lunch and it was great both times. Service is impeccable, the decor is soothing (its not as nautical as others make it sound) and the food is perfect.
