Took my laptop there because the screen would go dark if you opened it wider than a 45-degree angle. Let's see: half-closed, it works; open all the way, it doesn't. It's pretty bloody obvious what you need to check first, right? There's a faulty cable in there somewhere.

Mikey's Hook Up charged me $40 just for the privilege of having them look inside my computer. I suspect they never did look inside. If they did, they must be staggeringly incompetent. Here's what they told me: they don't know what was wrong with it, but they suspect a faulty logic board. Their suggestion: let them mail my iBook to the Apple service center, where for the low, low $300 flat fee Apple will fix whatever it is Mikey's Hook Up failed to spot.

I told them to forget it and took my laptop to the Harlem Apple Store, which right now is just a guy working out of his apartment. The guy, David, is awesome. He opened the Mac up, diagnosed a faulty cable (surprise, surprise!) and replaced it, at the total cost to me of $80.

Mikey's Hook Up, I want my $40 dollars back!

Pros: Trendy surroundings

Cons: Incompetent or maybe lazy - bad service either way

These guys don't really care. All they want is your money. If you were flying back to Australia in 5 hours they would of sold you a D/A (DVI-to-VGA) Converter that didn't do what you wanted.

They were wrong to tell you that ??there's no such thing? or ??it??s not possible?. But that would depend on what you asked for. No, there is NO little (passive) Adapter or Cable that does it. But there is a powered Device that costs more, that does.

A good SHOP or Consultant should give you Options and let you decide. And if they don't carry it, they should SEND YOU TO THEIR COMPETITOR. That's running a proper biz.

But it's not just Mikey's that is SMUG with their false sense of security and knowledge? Try going to some Radio Shacks, Best Buys (and the likes), and ask for the same thing. You'll probably get the same result or they will sell you a "D/A" converter thinking that you can use it as a "Magical A/D?. Even if you brought it back they would never care to remember that you cannot use a passive D/A as a A/D. I??ve walked in numerous times and after they told me they didn??t have it, I found it myself right in front of their eyes. Its cheaper to hire ignorant people then a Professional.
Solution:
Find another place that knows their stuff and stick with them. If they give you free NON-PROFITABLE Advice then it shows they care.

In Mikey's Hook Up's defense, the Gefen VGA to ADC peripheral has been discontinued. I think that you're being unfair with your rating of one star. Have you ever been inside one of their stores? What did you think of it?

I'm a total A/V apple computer geek. And I love Mikey's Hook-up. They always have what I need when I'm in a pinch. What the person who reviewed Mikey's Hook-Up and the ADC converter box forgot to tell you was...The converter box that he happen to discover cost $300.00. The monitor he is using cost $75.00 on ebay. What Mikey's Hook-up was trying to tell you was that there is no way to hookup analog to digital that makes sense economically. For the right amount of money u good link anything up.

I had called Mikeys Hook, up as a reference, from an acquaintance. I am trying to hook up a Video Graphics Array (VGA) (analog computer display) to an Apple Display Connection (ADC) (Digital). They said there is NO WAY to connect analog to digital. This is NOT true. Thanks to Gefen Inc. Although Mikeys is very knowledgeable, if I were the kind of person to believe what 1 place told me, I would be without a Apple 17" LCD screen today.

I took my computer there for a non-power issue hoping that because they seemed slighly alternative and hippish that they wouldn't be snobby, dodgey, and condescending like all the other computer repair companies that I've been to in the past.
WRRROOOOONNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG answer. They never called when they said they would, couldn't fix the problem, led me to believe that my computer was being worked on when it wasn't, spoke down to me and generally didn't give a s**t that I needed my computer back or at the very least the curteousy of a straight answer! I strongly recommend that you do not waste your time or money in this place.
P.S. I'm not some high strung psycho - I'm a mellow local who needed help and they didn't give it to me...
