Henry's is my favorite neighborhood restaurant/bar because they make the best hamburgers I've had here in NYC and because the bartenders are good-looking and friendly. The decor (Craftsman) and lighting are pleasing, although I for one could do without those Herman Miller posters. Excellent selection of wines (all American). Pretty narrow selection of items on the menu but they change seasonally; desserts are yummy and well-priced, great late night menu. Recommendations: Eat at the bar rather than in the dining room, it's cozier. And always ask the price of a special before ordering one!

I have been frequenting Henry's for about 2 years and just love it. The service is so attentive and warm. Each server brings a unique characteristic. They are not stuffy and stuck-up like most NYC restaurants. They take the time to get to know you. Your experience really starts right when you walk in with the door staff. They always welcome you with open arms and try to accommodate you as soon as possible. I know it is not a fluke for the servers to be so kind. Henry's is on to something when it comes to service. As for the food it is quite pricey however it is SO good. If you are ever at the restaurant when they are serving their soft shell crabs; order them fast. They are usually sold out later at night. I highly suggest this restaurant if you are visiting the "upper upper" West Side.

Let me begin by saying that 4 of us are in the restaurant business, so we have sympathy for the service industry and have a high level of tolerance for things that could happen. Last night, Friday, coming with a large group, 40-45 people. We had a reservation and tables were set up in the far end of the restaurant. Our group was one of the first to arrive, 4 adults & 2 young children. Seated promptly, our server took our drink orders and we gave our food orders since it was getting late. It took 15-20 minutes for 3 glasses of wine, and a cocktail to be served. Another half an hour later, we asked our server about our food and her response was that she had to wait for the rest of the table. That's almost 50 minutes later; 2 adults had just arrived and sat at the table and there were still 2 empty seats. I don't know when they thought it would be appropriate to serve the food, especially since no one cared to ask if anyone else was coming. About 10 mins later, they served the children their food. Another 10 mins passed we asked the person who appeared to be the floor manager about our food, she quickly said the food will be out soon; I guess she felt the 6 & 5 year olds were going to finish their meals and jump in cab home themselves. At the same time, someone at our table asked for a drink, she took the order & hurried away, never asking anyone else if they wanted anything, which would have been nice since we were still waiting for our food. At about 11:30 pm, we asked the server to split our check since we were leaving before the others, she returned with a check for the entire table. Really? additionally, only after our 3rd complaint did the server apologize. I guess 45 customers were not important for the management. Just when we thought it couldn't be any worse, they had the audacity to add a 20 % gratuity to the check. Gratuity is defined as: A FAVOR or GIFT, usually in the form of money, given in RETURN FOR SERVICE. I don't know what else to say.

Quickly looking for a restaurant in the area and stumbled in on Henry's. Billy was so attentive. The food was well prepared, drinks were great (the bartender knows his stuff) and we had an excellent evening. Will be sure to return next time we are in town. I hear they have a great brunch so expect to try that.

Normally I enjoy Henrys but last sundays brunch experience was terrible. Too many children running around the restaurant, screaming, and crawling on the floor. It was over the top. I'd avoid brunches until the management knows how to handle disruptive children (and incompetent parents). If you do have children bring them...they've got good pancakes...my kids like the banana.

my most recent experience at Henry's left much to be desired. My burger (which I sent back) was practically raw both times. I don't think "medium well" means "rare". It was my first time there for lunch, so maybe I'll just stick to dinner--when the server and staff seem to be more attentive to detail.

The brunch at Henry's is fantastic - I highly recommend both the crepes and the panko-crusted salmon cakes. The restaurant is quite large, and the tables spaced out - a nice change from the usual NY restaurants, where you're packed in like sardines. The space is tastefully decorated and the service is good.

This is a good neighborhood spot only if the chef and owner is there. On a Monday night, the food is horrific, so much so, that I am tempted to never return. I've eaten here four times. I was so impressed with the tuna appetizer and their signature mussels, but when I ordered these dishes for a guest visiting from upstate, we were so disappointed we sent the mussels back. Before we walked into the restaurant, we asked the hostess and then the waiter, "Guy" if they were fresh. We we're assured they were. Instead, they were bitter, rubbery and fishy! The chefs signature coconut milk infused broth was replaced with a bunch of tomatoes, sloppily placed on top! I was so embarrassed because I had been bragging about this dish for weeks and when my guest finally came to NYC, they were horrible! The service is awful. My waiter "Guy" didn't even notice our arrival. We literally waited 15 minutes before we asked the bus boy to locate our server. When he arrived he was sarcastic and rude. After paying my bill, I complained to the less than sympathetic manager. She listened but she didn't offer any compensation for my horrific experience. I will not go there again for a long, long, time-and only on a Saturday when the chef is there!

I've had brunch several times at Henry's and its always SPOT ON. Last monday I had a friend in town arriving late. So i called and asked what time they were serving til, they said 11pm. We were seated at 10:20pm. My goodness could the waiter be less happier. Seriously, he comes right up and is like "do you know what you want to drink", no hi, no greeting. I ordered some scotch, and we got a bottle of wine. I had not even taken a sip from my wine glass before the waiter starts comming over pouring more wine in my glass. He just wanted us out of there. My two guests ordered soup, as he served them he said "oh i'm not gonna bring the pepper over because I think the soup is seasoned perfectly" PULEAZE!!! He most likely had already cleaned the pepper grinder and didn't want to have to do it again. The food was great. I had this great Qualye special...DELICIOUS..very juicy . Each of my guests enjoyed there meal as well. It bothers me that we were so rushed... 40 minutes before closing is a big difference between 5 minutes to closing. But I will be back again...cause Henry's is a good restaurant,. and I will not let one waiter dissuade me.

This was one of the first places we tried in the neighborhood. The chocolate and vanilla creme brulee is one of my hubbie's favorite things in the world. I really like the brunch and their goat cheese salad. We've gone back here at least once a month and haven't been disappointed with the food. The service can be less than perfect, but never bad.

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Henry's this past Saturday night and it was nice. They have an outdoor patio and a roomy indoor dining area as well (they can definitely accommodate large groups). The food menu was a bit small, but had a nice variety, with some French- and Italian-influenced dishes, with the usual steak and burger. No entree really struck my fancy so I combined two sides: a grilled chicken breast and the macaroni and cheese. Both were great. My boyfriend ordered the Penne and he enjoyed his meal as well. For dessert we split the combination platter, which had rather small portions but they were good. The service was very attentive, as our water glasses were never empty. Also, the ambience is comfortable and somewhat romantic (but it's a place you can take families and children too). Overall I enjoyed Henry's very much.

This is a good place to hand in the neighborhood. The people are nice, they don't rush you and the food is good. It's one of our favorite places to go for lunch (salads and sandwiches) and for drinks and desserts or for dinner with the in-laws. The calamari, brulee and goat cheese salads are our favorites.

I've only been to Henry's once and it was a very pleasant experience. The decor is wonderful; wood paneling and soothing lighting....very relaxing and charming. No waiting. The price range is wide-there are some expensive things and some more reasonable things on the menu. Had the chicken kebob w/ couscous for an appetizer and it was wonderful! Wish they had that as an entree! The chicken club sandwich was out of this world as well. Ordered a small side of fries (only $2) and they are among the best I've ever had. The waitress was fantastic, came back to check on things without hovering around. Tables were cleaned between courses. The only negative was the lemon tart my friend ordered; I tried it out and it was way too tart for me. I'll be back- I'm hoping the results are just as good!

EDIT: 8/26/10........just wanted to update my review. I've been to Henry's many more times since I first posted and still find the place to be great. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. While other restaurants I have been to in NYC have gotten worse over time (new management, staff?) Henry's in consistently great.

Really nice place for a date. The wood decor & the candles burning give it an intimate feel. There's a bar in front to just have a few drinks. The food presentation is fabulous. Great bread & olive oil for dipping ! Everything arrived perfect (cooked correctly, this & that excluded or on the side) Our waiter was nice & attentive. I thought the menu was pretty limited but you can find something to eat (ex. chicken, a steak, a burger, a pasta, a salad) but just not enough choices of each for such a nice place. They have a good wine list - offering half bottles, full bottles or by the glass. It's definitely a nice evening out. Our bill was $70 (before tip) - we had a bottle of wine, I had a burger & fries while my friend ordered a salad w/grilled shrimp.

Henry's is just what the doctor ordered for the upper-UWS. This neighborhood gem has a great, warm, wood-paneled ambience, and the food is consistently good. The wine list is not too shabby, and the outdoor eating area is fantastic in the warmer months. The bar is inviting and the bartenders are always very friendly.

The only criticisms I have is that the service is pretty spotty. We've had great servers there, and then we've had incredibly bad servers there. Doesn't make sense. The other is that they, for some odd reason, have bread, but no bread plates. You eat it on the table!

I also disagree with the reviewer who said the penne w/ sausage is bad - it is very good.

We dine at Henry's an average of two times a month. Sometimes it's just our family. Other times we arrange to meet friends there. The menu truely has something for everyone, and we're always pleased with the quality. The atmosphere is warm without feeling clautrophic. Love the decor -- wonderful French posters on the walls and attractive lighting.

Service at Henry's is friendly and always great - a rarity in NYC. To start: the soups are always tasty and innovative. For lunch: the tuna burger is AMAZING!!, the hamburgers are big and juicy and i swear the the french fries best in the City! Yummy house salad, perfectly (lightly) dressed. For dinner: I always go for the fish and it's always cooked just right. At Henry's the mgmt, the chef & the staff are all exceedingly professional and it shows. While you're there, study the ultra-original poster Series, it's entertainment for the whole family.
And people - can we PLEASE take a moment to appreciate the fantastically gorgeous Arts & Crafts style woodworking in this establishment??!! If you haven't been in awhile, GO TO HENRY's, they rock.
(ahem...the managers are all yummy too)

First, they really know how to make a Manhattan. My starter earned Henrys another gold star five crisp, piping-hot fried oysters on little beds of mustardy celery root salad all nestled in their shells, accompanied by two toothsome sauces, one creamy garlic and ancho chile, the other an obviously homemade cocktail sauce with just the right horseradish bite. In a carnivorous mood, I ordered the New York strip steak, rare. Happily it came rare, napped in a rich jus. Excellent accompaniments were lightly creamed spinach with a hint of allspice and generous pile of perfect crispy fries. (I asked for, and happily received, another dish of the garlic ancho chile sauce for dipping!) While I generally eschew dessert I couldnt resist their perfect apple tart - a crisp, buttery crust, apples cooked just right, topped with fresh vanilla bean ice cream and a drizzle of heavenly almond cream.

The first time we went here it was very nice, the steak was cooked right and pretty flavorful and the service was very nice.

The second time the service was horrendous -- the food took forever to arrive, he never came back to ask how it was or offered us more drinks. The burger was AWFUL -- it had barely touched a grill. I took two bites and pushed it away, but it still made me sick the whole evening and the next day. If the waiter had come back, I could have complained, but he never did -- he's lucky I wasn't the one paying.

The positive first experience cannot override the second at all. I can't recommend.

Don't know what everyone's talking about - the place is great! The hostesses are sweet, the waiters are good and the food is excellent - the gazpacho is just right, the steak sandwich is my best friend's favorite and the chocolate cake is to die for! A great place to sit outside, smoke a cigarette, be perfectly content.
