After years of patronizing Vintage one night was enough to turn me off. In the past it has always been hit or miss as far as service, but the manager / bartender was enough to turn me off from this over-hyped nightspot.

I decided to roll the dice with this place after quickly skimming through reviews hungover at 9:30 Sunday morning. What made me choose this place was reading that they had all you can drink bloody Mary's, mimosas, and blinis for only 8 dollars. I also saw that it was nearby Penn station which ended up only being a 9 dollar cab ride...So we get there at 11:45, the place is really small/quiet/practically empty and my friend is giving me weird looks.I figured its 8 bucks all you can drink...lets give it a try...We sit down at the bar, I order a water a bloody marry along with an 8 dollar omelet with pepper jack cheese, avocado, and mushrooms (with a side of hash browns). The omelet was amazing and the bloody marry was strong/spicy complete with olive and celery. After one of these bloody Mary's I decided I did not want to die of heartburn so I switched to mimosas which were also strong (for a mimosa) and delicious. I kept pounding mimosas and sipping water which both kept getting refilled constantly. Literally, I could only finish a whole drink maybe twice the whole time I was there for maybe a minute tops without getting it immediately refilled or refreshed. The smooth transition from being hungover to drunk was beautiful...My friends and I began to laugh more and more as people slowly shuffled in and the champagne bottles popped faster and faster. 4pm rolled around and the marathon of mimosas ended. My drunk friends and I foolishly decided to leave even after finding out that it was happy hour with 3$ beers/ cocktails until closing. Worst mistake ever! the night went down hill from there as we bar hopped realizing we should have never left. I will definitely be going back there soon to have another perfect Sunday brunch. Next time I plan on trying the steak and eggs which was only 13 dollars and not leaving there until late.

I made reservations last night for the patio. They even had me hold it with a credit card. When my friends and I arrived we were told "they forgot" and didn't write down patio. It was apparant what had happened. A larger group had showed up (with no reservations) $$$ they accommodated them and told us we could sit inside. We of course left. I live locally and in the long run would have brought them much more business. Not now!

My friend was having a birthday party and since Vintage has an outdoor patio we decided to book it for a big group. Around 8pm some random guy upstairs yelled at everyone to keep it down. Yup, you live above a bar yet get annoyed that people are talking in the patio below you at 8pm on a Friday. Anyway, we keep drinking and around 8:30pm a huge bucket of water gets thrown over a bunch of us. The bar's response? Get everyone inside although the sign says patio open until 11pm on Fridays, cramp us up and then don't even have the decency to offer us a free drink despite several of us being majorly soaked. Apparently the neighbour keeps doing this, and apparently once before threw the contents of his toilet over people. The owner doesn't do anything. Yeah the neighbour is a moron, but the bar's behaviour given this is unforgivable as they market an unuseable patio to everyone. If you want to drink outside, you definitely don't want to be here unless you're risking getting soaked with who knows what.

I am hesitant to write a rave review, as I would hate for the place to become so busy that I can't find a free seat anymore, however... this is really is a unique and wonderful place, completely free of attitude. From the first visit, I was treated like a regular by the incredibly friendly bar and wait staff. The happy hour is recession-friendly and the food is the exact opposite of what you'd expect from 'bar food.'

Thank you, Vintage, for many a terrific drink, terrific meal and many new friends!

I have to admit I have not been to Vintage in a long time...I had a horrible experience with one of the staff and I vowed to never go back. But, my friends dragged me there yesterday and I have so say I was pleasantly surprised! I can't quite put my finger on it, something felt different. I could tell they had perked the place up, felt sexier, and they had some new menu items that were tasty. We got the Nachos (of course) and then this veggie plate with cheese spread...can't think of the exact name, but it was AWESOME! My friends and I stayed all night, enjoyed the great mix of music, random people, better than bar-food food, and strong drinks... "Dear Vintage, I'm sorry I broke up with you...but now I am BACK!" ha.

Cons: jalapenos are sooo hot! Bathroom could use a facelift...

I frequent this place more often than I probably should for a wine, there amazing nachos or to grab a quick beer. Its always a great chill spot, guac and nachos are amazing for it not being a full fledged mexican joint. Wait staff always nice, used to buy back one every few drinks.
Last night i went in there with a friend, sat at the bar and eveything was fine until this guy with jet black hair , more eyeliner than my mom in the 80's and a serious attitude comes in. He proceeds to go to the bar, yell at the bartender (who was just a nice girl doing her job) He clearly was her superior and wanted everyone in the place to know it. He yanked the volumn up on the music so disturbingly loud that the couple next to us at the bar looked over and said, why the hell is he doing that? The jet black hair with his tight cranky pants started putting out 8 x 10's of waaay too much information (somebody doesnt know jack about marketing) and when one patron at the bar kind of laughed and said, we can't read that (oh he had also dimmed the lights to a depressing degree) the manager snapped back, well here and through the candles in front of the 8 x 10's/ it was weird and laughably... I just felt bad for the staff. he was barking orders and made an unecessary scene. Clearly he has a chip on my shoulder and I'm afraid my favorite place may be tainted with his bad hair dye and bad attitude.
Moral of the story: if aint broke don't fix it.

The menu has 10 pages of Martinis! Sweet Martinis, Celebrity Martinis, I don't know what else. The beer selection isn't bad, and there's even a choice of bourbons!
The staff couldn't have been nicer. Judy our waitress was right there, and Kevin, our busboy was friendlier than a puppy. It was hard to peg the crowd. Mostly 30-somethings, few ties and jackets. Nice mix though, looks like there's a place for everyone from macho jocks to drag queens. Martinis were around the 10-11 mark. Beer 5-6. Pretty typical prices. Oh yeah, the music was NOT too loud. Yeah! --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

Vintage is great in that it has a nice low-key atmosphere for more artsy, down-to-earth types - I appreciate that, but it is not enough. I actually had not been there in quite some time, and I ended up being very disappointed when I recently went back. I went there for happy hour and ended up not having one. You see, Vintage has this absurd "rule" of only having happy hour in the front at the bar area - if you are forced to sit at a table or in the back lounge area, you are screwed - no happy hour prices for you (not that the happy hour selection or prices are anything to rave about). At least the server was honest when she said it is just a way to make the bar area look full...so people walking by will think "Hey, that place must be awesome!" My friends and I were really tempted to just walk out and go somewhere else, but we were total idiots and gave them our business...ONLY because we like martinis and did not feel like heading down to the West Village, where martini bars are more plentiful and offer better deals. I mean, the "Bar Only Happy Hour" rule is insane - especially in such an uncertain economic climate. Want MORE business, Vintage? How about a happy hour for ALL of your patrons. Oh yeah - Vintage boasts such a large martini menu, yet they fail to offer a lychee martini. The excuse for this? The juice is too difficult to get. Ummm...no it's not. There is a restaurant right down the street that has a lychee martini (for only $7!!!), and bar in New Brunswick, NJ that has one, too. My advice? Go to Vintage only if you must and DO NOT go for happy hour, because you probably won't have one!

bill, (the owner) has a really nice place. The food and drinks are great.. always treated myself and friends great. Prices are not bad for NYC I would recommend to anyone. It must be hard to deal with the pretentiousness of the off Broadway actors that come in. In spite, he's a great guy.

I first found Vintage while walking back to my car parked at 42nd and 9th. I was looking for a place to get a decent bite to eat that wasn't garbage but not a million dollars either. Since then, I have made it a point to eat there every time I am in the city (I live in New Jersey) and recommend it to friends. The food is fantastic (I recommend the baked penne!) and their assortment of mixed drinks is impressive to say the least. The wait staff is friendly and courteous without being annoyingly over the top. The overall atmosphere is awesome: classy, understated elegance without being too showy. I recommend this place 100%!

HI, my name is Jay Savino and I am the Bronx County GOP Leader and when I go to my friend Bill Gouldman's Vintage Bar, I drink for nothing the whole night because I never have any money, because I do not like to work and when I leave the Vintage Bar, I am totally drunk and drive home drunk to Rockland County.

I love Vintage for its LARGE assortment of martinis; every variety you can imagine! This place literally wrote the bible on martinis. Prices are a little steep but standard for midtown, and worth it for the novelty experience. The food is also very good, and the atmosphere is funky but low-key. My only complaint is that the waitstaff can be unattentive, especially if it's busy.

I went to Vintage twice and both times I experienced terrible service as well as an outright rude, hostile, condescending manager. First time some crappy band played there and the staff looking bored didn't seem to care about the customers at all. Second time we went to have dinner. While I was sitting at a table eating with my girlfriend the manager came and wanted to move us to another table (in the middle of our dinner) because he wanted to give our table to a bigger party! Guess what, he was not even nice or polite about it. Later that evening we found hair in our food and again the staff nor did the manager seem to care the least. We have been to Vintage two times too many. Not a recommended place.

I have entertained clients and introduced many friends to Vintage for the past couples of years and a great time has been had by all each and every time. We all appreciate and rave about the vast array of bottled beers as well as the endless variety of martinis and mixed drinks. My Manhattans are always perfect, the best in NYC, and the bartenders are always willing to alter any of the over 200 martinis from the separate drink menu. The waitresses have always been attentive and polite, always offering suggestions from the menu for newcomers and the restaurant manager has taken last minute reservations for me over the phone and relayed messages to my waiting guests if I have been delayed in my arrival because a meeting ran late or traffic was heavy. I have even seen him personally deliver an order to go on a busy Friday evening before Christmas, now that is real service! No request has ever fallen upon deaf ears of either staff or management during any of my trips to Vintage. The food has never disappointed and often impressed, espiecially the desserts, london broil with mashed potatoes, burgers,or sandwiches, and the nachos or the chilli for a delicious starter. Also, on any given night you may see a Broadway actor or actress stop in for a drink or a meal before or after a show, though the "wanna-be-a-star" crowd has on occasion dampened our evening's fun with their unearned pretenciousness, but that has been rare. So after your next Broadway show or any trip into Manhattan, plan to stop over at Vintage for a drink, try one of the specialty Martinis, or grab a late snack, you will have a great time and after your first visit you too will become a regular.

This place is a great alternative to the crowded wankfests of most mid-town bars, but its better than average barfood, nice wines, and extensive martini list are overshadowed by the rude, hostile, condescending manager. My friends and I have been there several times and been treated with contempt and scorn. He has asked to swich tables to make room for larger groups as though we were squatters in the place. We have also witnessed him treating other groups like this, so we know it's not personal. He's a complete tool, and poisons the vibe of the place absolutely. Very unfortunate.

Friends and I stopped by Saturday night for dinner. Place was empty and we were shown a table by the rude "manager/owner". I have been to this restaurant a number of times and I have never been treated so rudely. As we looked at the menu and the wine list, my friend overheard the manager comment to a waitress about me that "the least he could do is wear a button down shirt, and not show up dressed like a Gristede's boxcutter." My friends and I dine at some of the best restaurants in New York and comparitively this place is at best a low tier Bennigan's. With that we abruptly left and walked up the street to a restaurant where they appreciate your business - El Azteca. Avoid this place like the plague...

We went to Vintage on a Saturday night in February because wed heard about the great drink menu. After asking for a menu, the bartender let us know that there was a new chef and the menu was in transition. Everyone had a great time drink- and meal-wise. When we returned about a month later there was a list of specials and a slightly changed menu. So far weve all been very happy with the food. Its so much better than regular bar food and it complements the drink menu. The fun in each return trip is ordering a different entree and a new drink.

I went to Vintage for drinks on a Friday night with 5 friends. There were plenty of seats available, and very comfy at that. The atmosphere was just about perfect, right down to the music. And the martini menu--to die for! I've never seen so many drink choices, and at such reasonable prices. A great place at a great value. I'll definitely go back on my next trip to NYC.

Superb is the only word to describe my experience at Vintage. Delicious Food, exemplary service and incredible ambiance. Before dinner we had drinks at the Bar. I could not believe they had over 60 different beers to choose from. We had dinner on the patio, and it was quite nice to eat outside.
I will be back.

Pros: Food, Outdoor Dining, Moderately Priced

.

At first, the place looked promising, with a cute patio at back. Beer and mixed drink selection was good. But the food was awful--the hamburger I ordered tasted bitter, and my friend's calamari was barely fried. A disappointment for dinner, though perfectly fine if you're just looking to drink.

Pros: backyard patio, good drink selection

I had my birthday party here and it was a great experience! The staff were more than happy to accomodate us. The atmosphere was great and so were the Drinks, Music, and Food. Everyone had such a great time - I would definitely recommend this place for your next event. I will have my party here again next year.

Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Food/Drinks

.

I can not say enough about how fantastic Vintage is! The Martini list is unbelivable, the service is outstanding and the atmosphere cannot be beat. It is very difficult to find a bar with a cool vibe, absolutely no pretension and superb food. The crowd was a great mix of people too. I was impressed with Vintage I absolutely recommend this place.

Truly the best bar in the city! I have never seen such a selection of Martinis. They must have 160 different ones to pick from, and there Beer selection is crazy with over 60 different beers. I will definitely be back to try all the rest. It is refreshing to find a place where the service is both curteous and friendly. Without a doubt an enjoyable experience that I look forward to repeating!

I had dinner there last night as I always do when I go into to see a show. The food is great and they have a wonderful selection of martinis and beer- rarely do Ifind a place that serves Magic Hat. I love the fact that I don't have to deal with the onterage of in expereinced theater folk flooding to carmines or a similar place. BRAVO!

I was drawn to this place because I heard that there was a large selection of drinks and that it had a nice atmosphere. Whoever told me this had a COMPLETELY different experience. Maybe it had something to do with us not being white or part of the Hell's Kitchen scene. Whatever the excuse was, the staff was rude and barely even paid attention. We weren't even offered a dinner menu and the waitress didn't even notice that we wanted drinks until after I ordered them from the bar myself. After finally getting our drinks, I had high hopes of enjoying the night until I tasted the drinks. If we wanted to drink Dimetapp, Vicks 44 and Nyquil, I would have spent a third of the money at RiteAid. At least there, the cashiers smile and acknowledge my presence. I would NEVER return to Vintage let alone recommend it!

I've been here twice and had a similar experience with the owner/manager, a gruff tough guy who acts like he is working in a Hell's Angel's clubhouse instead of a lousy martini bar. I gave the place another try only to encounter the most obnoxious bartender ever. I have never given 0% before.

I went here recently with a group of my friends on a Wednesday night. The service we recieved from the waitstaff was less than friendly, they seemed to think that they were doing us a favor by serving our drinks. My fiancee approached the manager on our way out to tell him of our displeasure with his staff, he looked at her and said "I don't need your business" and then cursed at her. I will never go there again, and urge other to keep on walking.

I've been coming here for years and I love it! And judging from all the familiar faces I see, I'm not the only one who's made this their regular stop. It's a relaxed, fun place. The staff is sassy and young and give good service, even when the place is packed, which it can get on the weekends. The food is good to excellent, and the drink menu extensive--they say around 150 martinis and around 50 bottled beers.

I had dinner there the other day with 3 friends. I had a steak which was very good. My two friends had a Ceasear Salad with chicken and my other friend had Penne Vodka. The meals were very good. I was surprised at the selection of the beers that they had. I had a Chimay Blue, and my two friends had Martinis. It was a cool place. We will be back. I recommend this place.

Althought they are quite expensive all the Martinis here are worththe price. Bar staff is excellent and always make you feel welcome. I haven't tried a lot of their menu however their appitizers are tasty and fairly priced.

True, the decor left something to be desired for someone looking for a really nice pre-theater dinner place, but I disagree with the other reviewers -- the food was flavorful to a point where others might find fault but I thought gutsy and refreshing (pepper-crusted steak); the people and place unpretentious; the service very attentive and friendly. A large salad, two delectable entrees and a bottle of wine came out to a reasonable $70. A bar with a fine dinner menu and cool people working there.

This was not one of my favorite places to eat. It was loud and the wait staff was unfriendly. The food was so-so and was a little pricey.

Seeing that Vintage isn't far from us, we've gone back a few times hoping that the previous time was just bad luck. After our last visit, where we left after being ignored at our table for 10 minutes, I have to say this place has serious problems with service.

The food, when it finally comes, is ok, and there is a huge drink menu, but the drinks are very expensive. I don't mind paying $10-$12 for a fancy cocktail in a place that spends some money on decor and offers good service. At Vintage, it's just a slap in the face.

I don't recommend dining here. It might be ok to sit at the bar and get some nibbles, if you don't mind paying a bit more than you should. You can do a lot better on 9th than going to this place.

DO NOT GO HERE! The previous reviews were probably posted by the owner. This place became the first restaurant that I tipped 0 (as in zero) dollars. The wait staff was rude, my noodles were raw, the tables were wobbily, and it was VERY loud. But worst of all, the owner/manager was the rudest person in the whole place. I thought I would do him a favor and inform him of my displeasure, but he decided to throw his own tantrum. During our pleasant conversation, my waitress spilled drinks on him! In short, STAY AWAY! I joined this board specifically for this review.
