Like the age-old saying goes: you get what you pay for. Excellent place. Food comes fast, steak is always done right, and the prices are reasonable. Sorta. :)

Original and still the best. Took off one star simply because they gave us the run-around reservation-wise (I get it, you're busy, but, this is NYC, and you cruise you lose.)

After months and months of brain-breaking studying, my boyfriend finally completed the first step of the US Medical Licensing Exam! We needed to celebrate and I knew just the place. Under the East River and down Driggs Ave. it's off to Peter Luger's we went!

All I really knew about the establishment was that it was cash-only, very expensive, had a reputation for snooty service and served AWESOME steak. Walking into the restaurant, it felt like I could have been in any era - the place is timeless (it's been around since 1887 so I guess it has to be). We made reservations, which you absolutely need about 2 months in advance I'd advise, and only had to wait a couple of minutes for our table.

Contrary to what we expected, our waiter, Bernard, was warm, welcoming and very happy to make recommendations. The menu is very simple with few options for add-ons and the way your order steak is not by cut or even by oz. You can either get Steak for 2, Steak for 3, Steak for 4, or Steak for 6. Expensive aside (you have to just suck it up if you've already made it in the door), the meat was incredible! When steak goes to heaven, this is where it goes; super buttery in texture with a nice crisp on the outside. As for sides, and you have to order something else all you'll be eating is cow, we started with the Caesar salad and had the German-fried Potatoes and Creamed Spinach. The salad was pretty standard, but nicely dressed, while the potatoes were yummy but not that different from your typical home fries. The thought of creamed spinach takes me back to the days of eating in my dreary elementary school cafeteria, but I could have eaten this stuff by the bowlful. Not overly creamy and still with a fresh spinach flavor, this side is a must-do.

In the end, we were too full for dessert, but after seeing the table next to us order special "Holy Cow" ice cream sundae, I'm definitely game for that next time. All of their desserts are served with homemade Schlag, or amazing amazing creamy whipped cream.

I know NYC has so many hip and trendy eating establishments you would like to try, but trust me on this one. Oldies can be goodies and Peter Luger Steakhouse is a goodie. Make your reservations now for October!

If there was a zero star, I would have chosen to rate this restaurant as that! The waiters were ever changing & luckily for us, the 2nd waiter we had with the black dirty nails went on to another table. For such a limited menu, in food & wine, it??s hard to believe that the waiters have no idea of the wines by the glass that is offered. I almost cancelled our reservations for a 2nd time then thought wrongly to go outside of my gut feeling and finally went for dinner.

Seriously??? Again, Seriously??? It??s so unbelievable that this is considered the best steakhouse in the US and that being said; let??s go on to more realistic ratings?

Setting the stage: Smack dab in the center of what looks like at any moment you are going to get mugged! Not a pretty site & we went during sun light. I wouldn??t want to be here at dark! People in flip flops at every age range, cobwebs all over the upper walls & beer steins, are the wooden tables authentic? If not, they looked like it.

We started with the tomato & onion salad, served plain. If you want sauce, there is 1 to choose from called ??Luger??s Sauce? aka? Cocktail Sauce from the can! This is there ??special? sauce that you not only use on your salad, you use it on your steak or what ever pleases you. Now, getting to the point?

The beef was overcooked, tough & grizzly? something you could expect from CORN FED cattle. It comes out in 2 cups of unidentifiable hot liquid, when we asked about it the waiter said is that it was a combination of butter & aus jus. To us, it looked like straight vegetable oil with little bits of dark pepper & some microscopic meat droppings. I had the first bite and wanted to spit it out immediately! Now, I don??t mean to disrespect Denny??s, but if I could have imagined that I was eating a steak from Denny??s, that??s exactly what ran through my thoughts!

Disappointed, I tried different sections of the ??Steak for 2? to see if I had just eaten a ??bad bite? NO! It was a BAD STEAK through & through. Honestly, the worst steak I had ever tried to eat! I spit most of it out on my fork and back on the plate. The waiter never came back to ask how our food was. I wouldn??t even feed this steak to my dog so we left the majority of the portion sitting there and ran back to the city to enjoy dessert to flush that bad taste memory away! I remember steak in the dorms to be of better quality & taste than this. Don??t waist your hard earned dollars on this one? you will be more fulfilled at any fast food chain; coming from a NO fast food eater.

Yes, you're in for a treat with Peter Luger's. Classy, historic, delectable, nothing not to like except for maybe the price for the experience. But if you're looking for the steak of steaks, this is the place!

The atmosphere is great. You know that you're getting good quality service when the wait staff is so knowledgeable about their menu. The porterhouse is the way to go in my opinion. Lunch is good as well. It's definitely a New York staple.

Pros: they know steaks

I expected great things about this restaurant. We enjoyed the great steaks and waiters were very friendly and efficient.

HOWEVER, the front desk staff / management were extremely rude and totally lacked any customer service. Twice I went up to the front desk with a query on getting a taxi home. Both times the manager and the front office lady looked up at me and then looked away - she started to count the cash in her hands. I waited a few seconds before almost shouting - "Hello. Can someone help me."

A restaurant cannot rely on the quality of its food alone. I will not go back and get treated so badly. There are a lot more equally great steak restaurants in Manhattan

Another South Williamsburg gem! It took me 2 years to finally eat a proper potterhouse here and see what the ??best steak in NYC? tastes like. Getting reservations on a Sunday afternoon was surprisingly easy ?? provided you make them about a month in advance. Don??t even attempt to make dinner reservations unless you??re prepared to dine at 5pm or 10pm.

As expected, this NYC institution has an old school atmosphere, with quirky bartenders and no-nonsense waitstaff. It all added to the memorable experience nonetheless. The bread that came with the steaksauce was wonderful. We stuck to the staples ?? cream spinach and giant tomato slices with fresh mozzarella as sides, and a potterhouse steak for 2 (our party was 1 guy and 2 girls ?? the perfect combo for a potterhouse). The food came out very quickly to our pleasant surprise, as we were starving. There was more fat on the meat than I had preferred, although the steak was really delicious. Some parts were a little tough and chewy but for the most part, the meat was tender and very tasty, esp the part that you carve out of the t-bone (yum!).

All in all, it was such a delightful experience and such an adventure to come out to Brooklyn for; this is the kind of meal that you??ll cherish with close friends for a lifetime!

Peter Lugar's has been a New York Icon for as long as I can remember. What I can understand is WHY? YYou have to wait a month to make a reservation, the wait staffs are nasty and conduct themselves with an attitude, and the steak is sub quality. I had the misfortune of going there recently with a birthday party. I order my steak well don and what I got were BURNT lumps of meat that tasted like sand. It doesn't pay to complain because they act as if they are doing you a favor by letting you eat there and OH, forget your reservation time you'll end up waiting an hour when you get there anyway. And the meal for 6 was over $400.00!

New Yorkers, Visitors, don't be drawn into this trap! PETER LUGERS STINKS!!! If you want a top quality steak go to the Old Homestead or better yet go to Arthur??s in Hoboken, NJ on Washington and 3rd. Their delicious "Our Steak" is 24 oz Sirloin that makes Peter Lugar look like a bad day at White Castle.

STAY AWAY FROM PETR LUGARS!!!!!!

I love to try new restaurants. One of my favorite things to do. After this expierience I felt like I got the s%!t kicked out of me! The wait staff treated my friends and I like dogs. The way they threw the food at us, talked at us like we were kids, and the over all feeling that they thought they were superior for some reason. SAVE YOUR MONEY! The chairs are uncomfortable, spinach taste frozen...I swear I get the same kind at the grocery store. You jerks might make lots of dough but no way are you going home feeling good about yourselves. You can't when you go through life treating ppl like that. The steak is bull sh*$! My b.b.q. taste better. Trying Wolfgangs next.

THE RATING SYSTEM NEEDS TO ADD A ZERO FOR THIS REVIEW. I was in the city with my colleague and the CEO of a well known N.J based manufacturing company. We were in the mood for steak and were heading to Del Friscos in NYC. I heard that Peter Luger Steak House was the best of the best so we decided to give it a try. I travel for a living and had dinner at top notch steak houses accross the country such as Del Friscos, Ruth Chris, Shulas, and New York Prime in Boca Raton Florida. I was shocked that Peter Lugar couldn't stand up to the challenge. I asked for a Filet and was told that I had to order a steak for two which was a large porterhouse cooked like someone put it in an electric oven and put it up to the broiler for 10 mins, it was fatty and nasty. The cut was not thick and the waiters almost knock me over as they served which appeared to be left over hash browns from the waffle house and thawed out frozen spinach. The waiter's rushed us to order and rushed us out. They wouldn't accept credit which is fine but we were insulted when the waiter held my colleague to recite the four digit pin before he enter it into the machine. he also asked if my colleague knew the three digit security code on the back of the card. The kicker was when my colleague was asked to write his phone number on the receipt, maybe the waiter want to call my colleague for a date. The food was nasty, nasty, nasty, so I told the waiters that they were pretty cocky for guys who work at a steak house with terrible food. If your ever in South Florida, try New York Prime just off of I95 and Glades Road in Boca Raton., It is the best of the best and you will be treated like a VIP every time you east there!!!

Came here for my boyfriend's bday. We got the bacon as the appetizer, porterhouse for two, cream spinach, German fries and finally hot fudge sundae.

The bacon was not the regular one you get from grocery store; it is a little thicker than the Canadian bacon and juicier. You pair it with tomato and onion and their house sauce. It was ilke heaven.

The steak of course was amazing and we couldn't finish it. We packed everything to go. Our server was actually pretty attentive and nice. They even sang my boyfriend a Happy Birthday song!

The decor was not really fancy and it looks like an old German beer house but it goes well with the atmosphere here. Not great for romantic dates because it is kind of loud but i think either way, your date will appreciate the food and the money you spent!

After reading your response Martin G. I have come to realize that there are many people in this world, you being one of them, that don't know class or high quality even after they are exposed to it and never will. You just don't get it. You could be served the finest wines, the best cognac, the finest cigars and expensive colognes and yet you still will hold to your belief that marlboro cigarettes, Budwiser beer and two dollar shots at the dive bar down the street is just as good. Class is not something that can be taught or learned. It's something to be appreciated. Peter Luger is class all the way and it's a shame that by saving a few twentys for a month or two lets the low end of society cancel their olive garden reservation and sits them among the elite and lets them expose their beer pallet taste to champagne living. Then to make matters worse you go and find fault with that which is without any fault at all. You are much to unsofisticated for Peter Luger. The decor, the meal, it was all to much for you. Money is not the problem. As i said, today anyone can scrounge up a little savings to treat themselves to anything. It's being of a certain class and cut of society that money can't buy, so don't blame Peter Luger, it's not them where the fault lies.

Ok first of all this site is to review a restaurant. There is no reason for someone to write a half page essay about another persons review mr or ms. priso. I simply did not enjoy my experiece at the worlds famous "Peter Luger" steakhouse and I was sharing that with the citysearch community before they too are swindled into the same trap as I. Now as far as me not enjoying "the most expensive steakhouse ", price is not an issue for me. I have no problem paying when its worth the money. To make a long story short if anyone is bitter it's you. Im sorry if you are an employee there Priso or Family of the owners but the restaurant is just not that good.

I have been to many steakhouses throughout the US and this was by far the best!!! The owner of my pharmacy Palma Chemist treated the entire staff during the holiday and boy, this was one of the Best Xmas presents ever! Our waiter Otto, who obviously has been there for many years gave us excellent service. The shrimp cocktail tasted like it was right out of the sea, the bacon appetizer was great and the porterhouse steak, ordered medium rare was outrageous. A couple of people in my party ordered the steak well done, much to the displeasure of our waiter and then said they have had better. Thats like taking a bottle of Moet and diluting it with a bottle of Colt45.Guess you can take the person out of outback but you...By the way, the creamed spinach side was incredible. Only problem was that after dining on this meal fit for a king, we didnt have any room for the delicious deserts going by our table.recommend...recommend...RECOMMEND!!!

My boyfriend and I went for our very first time and we were very pleased. We started off with a few slices of bacon and a sliced tomato. I'm not one to balk at the price of food when it's truly delicious, but I'm still not sure why a tomato was $13. It was flawless looking, yes, but it didn't have a wonderful flavor and it was JUST tomato. Next time we're just going to get extra bacon because that was the best double cut bacon I've ever had. We decided to get the porterhouse for 2 and a ribeye. Both were excellent. They were the best non-kobe steaks I've ever had. My boyfriend doesn't drink and they don't serve wine by the glass, so I ordered the 1/2 bottle of Cab for myself. It was very overpriced at $39. I won't bother with any wine next time. The bread basket was wonderful. It was really a great selection. We ordered fries and creamed spinach for our sides. The fries didn't look very good and they tasted about the same, but that might have been the best creamed spinach I've ever had. It was very light and flavorful without being overpowering. Some places make a very heavy creamed spinach and that doesn't really appeal to me. For dessert we ordered key lime pie and chocolate mousse cake. The key lime was nothing special and I was really wishing I'd ordered the chocolate cake which was very moist and delicious, again not too heavy. The service was very eh, but I've noticed that about 95% of the legendary must eat places aren't very friendly because the food is so good that you'll go back anyway. One thing that's tricky is that it's cash only and the menu online doesn't have prices, so it's really hard to guess how much cash to bring. I'd say bring $125-150 per person if you plan on doing a full meal plus alcohol, tax and tip. That should be more than enough.

Upon arrival, we??ve been seated promptly. This was our first time at Peter Lugers. We ordered tomato ??salad? (One large tomato sliced into 5 slices - $12.00). I know they claim it is a special grown tomato. Sorry, my husband and I didn??t notice anything special about it, very average tasting tomato. We also ordered spinach and steak for 2. Spinach tasted like a 99c defrosted pack of spinach with no cream or anything else in it. So I did not eat it at all, my husband ate some. So, we told ourselves, maybe salads and spinach is not their specialty, steak must be great here(All great reviews????). Our steak arrived. It looked nice, large enough for too. Taste was a huge disappointment for both of us. We??ve made reservations 3 wks in advance to eat this.. Steak was pretty tough and had no taste. Their ??Peter Luger? sause, is a regular shrimp cocktail sauce you can buy at any supermarket. Ok, I can??t compare it to too many other fancy/expansive stakehouses, but even ??Outback? is WAY better. We??ve been to Del Frisco??s in NYC, and it was great, a bit more expansive than Peter Lugers. So, at Peter Lugers our bill came to $135.00 (we also ordered 2 coffees and 1 desert). Final Note: Bad, Bad, Bad food. Our server was nice. It is all a hype, nothing else. Their upstairs section was totally empty, but they were telling people that asked if they could be seated ??NO, you need to make reservations.

I have read some bad reviews about Peter Lugers and was a bit apprehensive. It was many years since going there my first time and I was a little young to really remember what it was like. I like a good steak and Peter Lugers has it. I do a lot of traveling around the world and will say I have had better steak. This is mainly because the Filet Mignon is my favorite and they are noted for their Porterhouse. The steak was done perfectly the way we ordered and the German Potatoes and the Creamed Spinach were very good. Before dinner I had a couple of cocktails which were superb. As for the staff, I found them to be friendly, helpful and, all and all, quite good at their job. It was a bit bright for me as I like a little more mood to the atmosphere. An absolute great place to go with your buddies for a steak and drinks.

They deserve zero stars, instead a black hole, as this was the worst experience I have had at a steakhouse let alone a restaurant anywhere in the world. The menu was limited, the steak offered was only porterhouse and served in bulk, so must be done to meet all diners?? needs. It was fatty and chewy and tasteless and drenched in oil. The vegetables were no better. The famous 'German' potatoes were left over hash browns at best. The waiter who served us, was a savage, he servied me by moving my hands out of the way with a knife and serving spoon to get at my plate, cutting my knuckles. After rushing us away out immediately after eating, they did not accept a credit card, and the debit machine was (as others have reviewed) was not working, which embarrassed both of the men in our party as they had not told us prior to seating the limited payment method, hence they were sent to the bank machine like criminals for cash, while the restaurant held me behind for ransom. During my hostage taking I asked to speak with the manager, and on complaining to the manager saying politely this was the worst experience in fine dining I have ever had and explaining how embarassed I was, rather than receiving an apology, I instead was scolded. To quote the manager "most leave saying it's the best meal I've ever had', perhaps this is so for the odd savage that stops in. This was the word experience and cannot be rated well by savvy New Yorkers nor international guests who have dined the world, this is the absolutely no better than a road side diner with cranky bad service, bad food, and a horrible attitude. They do not deserve your business. In fact charging 300+ for four to dine on cheap California wine, gristly steak and overcooked potatoes with offensive and aggressive service is nothing short of robbery.

On my recent trip to New York I made a special trip over to Brooklyn to visit Peter Luger. Arriving right on time for my 10:45 reservation the door was locked. The bus boy wouldn't even let us in to talk to the manager about their error. When the manager did come out he apologized and said they had already turned the broilers off so that there was nothing he could do. By the way, they had confirmed the reservation twice by phone.

We made a reservation 4 weeks in advance, it took 45-1 hour to get a table. The matrede Alex was extremely rude, obnoxious, unapologetic, mean.....definitely not a good start to a nice evening in a well knowns place. The food is overrated - I have had many steaks that were 200% better in the past, the waiters are abrupt, quick, you feel like they are trying to chase you out form the place. Not a clean place, not a smile in the room from staff...this place needs to go. There are so many other places in Brooklyn or NY City that would treat their customers so much better and you will get a much better meal for much less....AVOID THIS PLACE! NVER AGAIN!

This place is sooo brutally overrated! The food is just average, the menu is very limited. Their service doesn't leave you feel like a valued customer to say the least....Dinner for 4 cost us about $700 (cash only). Nothing special, extremely uninviting atmosphere....Huge disappointment!

Waiters grab raw bacon with their bare hands and continue to work without washing their hands. Steaks fall on the floor and get thrown back on he grill. Burgers are kept unrefrigerated throughout lunch hours. 12 to 4. Bacteria builds up and multipies every half hour and excrete all over your fresh burger. Creatures are plentiful in the storage area. Raw meat is left on trays that waiters clean the tables with. The worst is that gross bucket of dirty still water they keep in the dinning room to "clean tables with". Rude, Dirty and Gross. Save Yourselves . Goto a diffrent steak house.

You won't forget this place and the size of the steaks you get. You WILL have to share, trust me. We drove way out of our way to experience Peter Lugers and it is one of my best memories of our NY trip. I believe the waiters have been there since the 70's and are typical fast paced New Yorkers. Cash only

I have been to this place for four times because it is so famous and outside visitors always want to go there. I don't know why but men just love this place...My husband love it too. To me it is not a special place at all. O.K. steaks, poor service, no table cloth, casual atmosphere, rude telephone operator.... The tomatoes of tomatoes and Mozzarella had no taste but just so big. Well but the bacon is thick and delicious!!

Following the guidelines of previous reviews, we ordered the creamed spinach, grilled bacons, and the porterhouse steak for two. The bacons were amazing; like a ham steak. One is enough per person, unless you?re really hungry. Spinach was so good. You have to try it to believe it. The steak arrived medium rare, all well cut in a sizzling plate. One of the best steaks we?ve ever had. Even the service was top notch: friendly, speedy, and attentive. Well worth the money, the scary trip, and time. Reservations a must.

I'm not huge on steak (I'm one of those that orders their steaks well-done) and I don't normally eat out at restaurants where entrees are more than 20-something bucks. I've been to Peter Lugers 3 times. The first was for dinner, I had a steak, it was awesome. The food was tasty and the waiter (Horst) was very nice. I went for my sister's birthday and while I did enjoy it, I probably wouldn't go back for dinner anytime soon...If I were a big spender and steak eater, I'm sure I would go back more often. I do have to recommend the bugers that they serve only for LUNCH. They're about $10, throw in a side to share, a couple of $4 cokes and a dessert to share (plus the Shlaag!) and you've got the best meal ever for under $30! It's totally worth taking half a day off of work to do lunch at Luger's (no reservation needed). The shlaag does not get enough credit on this site. It's this German whipped cream that they serve on the side when you order a dessert and it is divine. If I could go just for the shlaag, I would.

The steak is great, but the ambiance is awesome. The waiters are all old German men and they don't even give you a menu half the time, unless you ask for one. "Steak for two" is more than enough to feed three. The creamed spinach and potatoes are great, but the tomato and mozzarella salad is worth the drive.

The ONLY reason I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is for the decor. I was totally skeptical because everyone always raves about how good the steak is. I went with someone who is an expert and he ordered for the table. The food was simply divine. I have never had a bacon slice like that in my life. The steak was family style and it was superb. The wine list was fantastic - Silver Oak, the works. The only thing this places lacks is atmosphere. I was expecting dark wood and booths, but it's really more like a german beer hall in Munich. Loud, rickety chairs, old table, paint peeling from walls. You would think a cash only restaurant could clean it up a little bit. NOT a date place - but undeniably a gastronomical delight.

I'm new so I don't know how was back in the day, maybe this was a good place, but today is pricey without justification, Waiters are rude and food is less than average.

So sad restaurant owners pass commentaries as fake customers. The truth has to be told:
AVOID THIS PLACE AT ANY COST. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.
If you don't believe, just go there AND YOU'LL KNOW.

i'm amazed this place has such a good reputation. the earliest my group was able to get a reservation was 9:45. we were on time. we were immediately seated and essentially ambushed by the staff. the waiter was at the table within seconds and i mean seconds to "explain" the menu and find out if we had already decided. two people from our group had gone to the ladies room and i asked if he could wait until they came back so they could hear what he had to tell us. this upset him. he actually made a face and walked away. here is some advice to this restaurant. if someone asks for an 8:00 reservation and the earliest you can offer is 9:45, then don't take the reservation if you're going to treat them like garbage. we weren't there for a three hour meal but they had us in and out in just over an hour. the appetizers came out less than three minutes after we ordered them. my back side hadn't even warmed the chair yet. it's faster and less friendly than mcdonalds. we were sheep. get their money and get them out must be their motto. as far as the food, not much better. one of the waiters came over to prep the table for the entrees and said "get ready for the show". by show he must have meant shoveling meat and side orders onto a plate. wow, amazing. i've never seen anything like that. the temperature of the steak was off. the flavor was at best average. the creamed spinach was good. that's the best thing i can say about this place. good creamed spinach. keep up the good work on the creamed spinach at a hundred dollars a head. del friscos, better. capital grille, better. blt steak, a hundred times better. the shake shack, better. you name it, it's better. rude, rip off, over-rated. i will never go back. i work in the restaurant business and i will tell any and all to never go there.

HANDS DOWN, THE BEST DINNER I HAVE EVER HAD!
No joke. I was amazed by this place. I read all the reviews on here before I left and I was expecting rude waiters and shabby atmosphere. I was also a little weary of the prices possibly being too high and not worth it. Well, the waiters were cool- he was very patient with our group (most of whom could not speak a lick of English). The scene was chill, no frills, wooden tables, somewhat of a volume due to conversation and happily blue collar (even though there were a lot of white collar folks around).

We ordered 3 double orders of the porter house medium rare (the only way to go) and let me tell you this was THE best steak I have EVER had. We also order a few spinaches and an order of fries as well. The spinach is insane and the fries... mmmm! By the end of the meal everyone was stuffed but not in that "I ate too much" way. Content is an understatement. I FELT HIGH! I kid you not, I felt like someone drugged me and I was stoned or something. AMAZING! Even as I left, as full as I was, I could smell the new orders coming out and it made my mouth water.

MY advice: IF you want the best steak out there, go to Luger's. If you are the type you expects a waiter who will coddle you and fancy decour to boot, then DONT GO. This is Brooklyn folks! If you can't handle the BK attitude, then stay in the suburbs or go somewhere in Manhattan where they will kiss your @$$ and make sure you're napkin is tucked in nice and neat. Forget that though... if you want the BEST... this is where its at. Toughen up and go to Luger's. You won't be disappointed.

Forget that though... if you want the BEST... this is where its at. Toughen up and go to Luger's. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: steak that gets you high, no BS service

Cons: pricey, but worth it

Okay, P.L. needs another rave review like I need another chin but DAMN! Simply the best steak I have ever eaten. Don't call yourself a carnivore unless you have sampled the meat at P.L. Side dishes, side mishes, service, smervice, both were great in m.h.o., who cares. Anyplace that serves bacon as an appetizer, you gotta go right? You will not be disappointed. Go to P.L., get a porterhouse, die happy. That's my advice.

Pros: The best meat, cooked perfectly
