My fiancee and I have been coming here for a few years now - he got me hooked on the seafood paella and the roasted potatoes with garlic and paprika. We've tried most of their tapas on the menu - and definitely have our favorites

The place is wonderful!! You feel as if you are in Spain at a long leisurely dinner. The sangria flows freely and the paella is fabulous. You must try this little bit of Spain in the middle of Manhattan!

This is a great spot for paella, but not the best paella by any stretch. Of course, if you've never eaten paella in Spain, especially Valencia, this may be wow-worthy for you. We got the seafood paella and the best part of paella is the crunchy crust at the bottom of the pan. well, there was no such thing.

And another thing, for the owners, when you have a party who's spending a couple of hundred dollars on their food and drinks, you don't charge them $3 for hot sauce on their bill. Have some class! Ok? Thanks

I love this place! The food is so tasty, and the Sangria is the best I've ever had. The staff is very polite and friendly. Also, the restaurant as actually open from noon every day, not 5:30 pm as mentioned here. I went in the afternoon. I would imagine at night it probably gets a little tight in there. But the ambiance is nice too.

Great ambiance, i was there for dinner on a week night, no reservation needed at all. The service was very nice too... i had one of the paella, and it's the best one that i've had so far. Great experience in general, i'll definitely go back

This restaurant is great, i don't know what the reviewer below is talking about but he must have been in another place thinking it was la paella, the sangria is not watery and i would say it's pretty strong, they don't put ice in it like in many other spanish places, the shrimp and garlic plain?? humm.. and the paella too?? well taste and colours can't be argued but in this case, you must be tasteless to say that!! anyway the food in general is tastefull and the paella is a must to have as well as the sangria. i have been going there for few years now and i never been let down.

Total ruin my NYC trip with its bad and expensive food. Sangri was like water with some apple pieces. Shrimp garlic plain as well as their paella marinera. I could do better If this is called authentic spanish food. Service was good thou because there were only 3 groups of guests on a Sunday night.

My boyfriend and I went to La Paella a little after 5pm on Saturday and saw the post outside the restaurant for Early Bird Special. We were there for the Seafood Paella originally as recommended by one of the NYC value eat books. We ordered the special instead which was $16.95 for each person and you get to choose 1 appetizer, 1 main dish, 1 ice cream and 1 glass of Sangria or 1 bottle of Beer. We had the Gazpacho and green with goat cheese for appetizer, stuffed Tilapia and two tapas for main course. The portion was generous and the taste was fabulous. I enjoyed the Sangria while my boyfriend had his favorite Sam Adams. We went home with a full and satisfied stomach.

I'm not sure what the below review is talking about. I've been going to La Paella for several years now and have never had a bad experience, always can't wait to go back. The food is delicious, surprisingly reasonably priced. The sangria is delicious. The restaurant is beautiful and romantic. I've brought so many friends here and each one has gone back with their friends. THe one thing I can say is not always the best is their host/ hostess, they tend to be a little rude sometimes, which is strange.

Reading all the positive reviews this restaurant got on City Search me and my partner where more than excited to go there for dinner. When we got there the restaurant was busy but there was prompt seating. We were put in a make shift small table (that barely held our plates) in their bottom floor by the kitchen and bathrooms and next to a dark basement like environment. There was absolutely no romantic atmosphere in this restaurant, and we felt like sardines in a tin can. The restaurant was packed with loud drunk people having b-day parties that further took away any sense of romance and relaxation. Although some of the tapas appetizers where good, the rest of the meal was not authentic. We ate a very Americanized version of a seafood paella, along with an average tasting Sangria, and mediocre dessert.

Overall, I would strongly not recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to taste real Spanish food in a romantic atmosphere. This restaurant is more for people wanting to go out in groups, drink, be loud, and not really worry about the quality of the food, or are not familiar with real Spanish Food.

I will not be returning to this restaurant again.

Good luck El Paella.

They have great sangria (with cut up apple pieces), and the basque paella was awesome-- there were plenty of seafood, and the 2 person serving was a good side dish for 6 people. I want to go back and try all the different paella dishes they have.

With a large group of folks we headed to Paella for some good grub. First, you can make reservations and request downstairs for a large group, which I highly recommend (b/c it gets packed very quickly). The sangria and large family sized portions of paella were delicious and simple. Service isn't particularly attentive... but this isn't a fancy restaurant either. Atmosphere is simple, no frills, fun and loud.

La Paella has great tapas. Must trys include: The empanadas which are done to a crusty, flaky perfection (no joke), the serrano ham, the garlic shrimp and mushrooms. The place is small and dark, instantly transporting you to old world Spain. The are two dining areas although the top one if usually the seating of choice. There is a great Rioja offered there called Faustino V, which is a great bargin at $36. Overall, a MUST try.

Going during peak hours negates the whole "nice tapas" feel it has going. The food and wine is great, but not worth having to wade through the dozens of yuppies pretending to be hipsters that have invaded the area around st. mark's place.

good place for friends. not so great for a date b/c they make spanish food right- i.e., with lots and LOTS of garlic.

PROS: garlic
CONS: crowd

I went to La Paella with two girlfriends several weeks ago. The food was absolutely delicious, and our server was very sweet and attentive. We were also really impressed with the sangria, and even more so once our bill arrived and between five dishes, a pitcher of sangria, and dessert, the total came to about $33 a person including tip. The only downside was this rando at the table next to us who kept interrupting our conversation with his inane questions. Definitely going back!

La Paella is a fun place to go to. The setting is great for a date, it's romantic and has a very good sharing menu. A paella dish is enough for tow (or more if you order a lot of tapas to start) and the sangria is pretty good. I've never been downstairs for dinner, but the upstairs is a little cramped. The last time I went, most of the tables were occupied and we ended up sitting at a corner table, which would have been ok except for the fact that we were sitting side by side and the table was on an angle (kind of awkward to eat like that). Overall, this is a fun place to go.

I went on Saturday with a group of friends to La Paella and we were seated downstairs. I need to say since I have been eating at this restaurant several times during the last year, that the food is amazing but the space downstairs is very crampy on Saturday nights. We were seated downstaits and there were too many people. It was so dificult to be able to walk around; the conversation was so dificult and the service did not reach the expected height. It was as if we all the customers were from the same party. And we were not. Maybe it needed a better seating managing or organization. If you really want a quality-dinner night, ask to have dinner upstairs. That way you will enjoy the good Spanish food in a nicer ambience.

I've been going to this place for a couple of years now and i never been disapointed. The service is friendly, the tapas are great (the shrimps and bacon, the grilled scallops, the stuff pepper and goat cheese, etc...), the paella is simply delicious, and the sangria is out of this world. Overall i really think this place is a winner for a date or for groups (they have a basement that accomodate pretty large parties).

I've been going there for few months now, and I'm always happy with the food (great tapas and Paella), the service (they make you really feel welcome), the music (loud but doesn't bother conversation), the Atmospher/decor (candle light, dry roses on the ceiling), and the Sangria (got to have it). Overall, great for group and date, good constitancy on the food, good money value.

The waiter was somewhat rude. I asked if a 4 person table was available when there were two of us, (on a slow night), he curtly said no, without any attempt to accomodate us. Again when I asked if we could move to a window seat where it's cooler, he quickly disagreed but we moved anyway. Service aside, the marinera paella was dry, dry, dry. Leaving us asking "where's the juice??". The flavor was on the bland side and not bursting with freshness. For a place named La Paella, I would expect much better paella to justify its name.

I have done my best to try every tapas bar I have come across and none that I have ever tried can beat La Paella. This place has everything, amazing food, an extensive menu, great sangria, reasonable prices, and an atmosphere to die for hundreds of dried roses hang from the ceiling. It can get a little tight on busy nights but the food is worth it. A word of advice though: make reservations, this place gets very busy on weekends.

I travel a lot for work and eat out often, and don't believe I ever dined in a tourist trap of this caliber.
We ordered a mixed tapas plate for two people for $28. A small plate arrived with what could qualify as an appetizer for one person, but MOST CERTAINLY not for two, and not worth $28. This is not a restaurant that can allow itself such prices. With two glasses of underwhelming house wine and a tip, we paid $50 for this poor-man's meal. We talked to the owner who smirked at us and was entirely dismissive and defensive -- the customer's a chump at La Paella. Don't go there, unless of course you like your intelligence insulted.

Fantastic auth. spanish food here. Sangria is worth it, nice setting, and te dish for 2 is more than plenty.

I have no complaints on this place. If you get there later in the evening you'll be waiting at a small bar area for a while. People like to sit an chill and not move too fast.

I am a regular at La Paella for few years, never been disappointed so far. I always enjoy their great Tapas,
Paella and Sangria. I visited the restaurant last monday and they have now a special for Monday and Tuesday, buy 1 get 1 free on the Sangria wich i think it's a great deal especialy it's seems to be a more slow night there, so you can really feel the romantic atmosphere of this great place..
Try the scallops if you didn't yet they are sooooo goooood!!!
Enjoy!

Came here with a group of 8, and staff made our experience great. How do I know this? B/c the dinner focused on good friends and good food, not waiting around for service or being bothered by rude staff to leave. Food was AMAZING!! Must try the shrimp wrapped in bacon...so delish!! and the paella...yummy!! Better for couples than groups.

....the spanish word for bland. pretty much tasteless. When I go for tapas, I'm expecting sazon, sabor, the whole mouth-watering experience of popping a small delicacy in your mouth. Not at La Paella. The patatas bravas were watered down, the cheese plate was plain, and the ceviche de pulpo looked like it came out of a goya can. And the sangria (or was it apple cider?) had only apples, a total lack of citrus fruits (limes, grapefruits, oranges) which are supposed to give it that tangy taste. Luckily, my dinner date compensated for the lack of sazon y sabor in the food and kept me smiling, otherwise, I would've left the restaurant pretty dissapointed.

his cute little place is great for a casual date or getting together with friends. The place is full of dry roses hanging from the ceiling and Gipsy King music playing on the background. The tapas (appetizers) and sangria (a mix of wine and fruits) are really good. If you go there you must try the croquetas de hamon y queso(ham and cheese). It melts in your mouth but you must leave room for the grill scallops.

his cute little place is great for a casual date or getting together with friends.

Pros: Romantic, cozy

Cons: , Not for big groups

.

Good variety of tapas dishes...and a cozy little atmosphere as well. It gets crowded most of the time, so Xunta is around the corner!

This place is cozy, with candlelight, pretty good food, and very good sangria. I recommend the chorizo, the ceviche, and a pitcher of sangria. Some of the tapas are just ok and the paella was overcooked. Overall, a pleasant experience for a reasonable price.

Dim lights, shared food, little tables, and dried roses everywhere turn this small room into a romantic gem. Get the seafood paella! They don't take reservations on weekends and the place was pleasantly full, but not overcrowded.

The paella was not so great. It was on the more expensive side but the rice was very gummy.
The sangria was fabulous though!!!
The restaurant is small so seating was tight.

One of my favorite places that's not too expensive in the city - tapas are like the Spanish equivalent of Chinese dimsum - a very social kind of food. Bring a couple of people so you can try different kinds of tapas. My favorites include the grilled squid, artichoke and chorizos, but its all good. The sauces are great for dipping bread. And the sangria is the best I've had in the city - sweet and fruity enough but not too overly strong and not fruit punch tasting. And very affordable. 5 of us, 2 bottles of wine, big paella, and 8 tapas was only $150 after tax and tip.

I've been to this place twice. Once with a large group and once with my girlfriend and both times the Sangria & Food (esp. the tapas) were great. If you go in a large group though you may have to wait a while as we did (~30 mins). This is not a huge place so I wouldn't recommend taking HUGE groups. When I went with my girl, the service was quick & good, and we really enjoyed ourselves. Would definitely go back and highly recommend it because it doesn't kill your bank account either. Good food doesn't have to mean high price. Nice romantic spot too (in it's own way).

Pros: great sangria, great tapas, good paella

Cons: a little cramped, service ok

Great food although I'd stay away from Paellas and go for the smaller tapas which are amazing. Salmon in Asparagus and the spicy Mussels are divine. Sangria is great. The atmosphere is perfect for both a romantic date (candles, medieval Spanish atmosphere) and for groups. The basement is much more intimate than upstairs. Overall, the atmosphere and the food make it the best Tapas restaurant I know. (and yes, I know plenty)

We were a group of 20 and our experience was even better than the editor's review. Although all the tapas we ordered (squid with ink, meatballs, stuffed squash, lamb, scallops) were great, the paellas (seafood, meat) were delicious, too. The hostess was in a foul mood, weekend reservations are not accepted, and the tables/chairs are crammed downstairs, but we got there at 6:30 on a saturday night and had no problem being seated, w/most of the lower level to ourselves. Everyone was stuffed on so much food and sangria. All for only $30 a head (including the automatic 20% gratuity for large groups). Unbeatable!

In this restaurant you are like in Spain. We went on Monday, quiet day, and was delicious to spend few hours eating amazing paella and drinking sangria. Service was very friendly. Don't miss the "crema catalana" the waiter recommended us for dessert. Mmm.

Great atmosphere, like the decor. Nice setting. The paella is nice. Just the right flavor. Only complaint is the waiter. He comes over just once to take the order and never seen again. The bus boys on the other hand does a great job. Water is refilled without having to ask to them. Dirty plates are replaced with clean ones. Highly recommend it~!!

Food is excellent, great sangria, and although noisy, the vibe is great for either groups or couples. The dried roses on the ceiling add a nice touch. This place is popular, so expect a wait.

This place has 5 different paellas to choose from - all of which look really delicious. I personally had the meat paella because I'm not a fish eater and man, it was savory! Great with groups and affordable too!

I went here for a fun dinner with friends - they do not take reservations during the week, but we were seated pretty swiftly for a Friday night, having had a delicious glass of Spanish wine at the bar. The menu has a varied list of tapas, to suit all tastes, and all our choices were a success. Their trademark paella was exceptional, we had the squid one - yummy. It all took me back to my last visit to Spain, including the great value - all in all, highly recommended.

The best sangria! The sangria had just the right amount of wine and sweetness. We drank four pitchers between 6 of us. Paella was delicious and the service was terrific. We also ordered calamari, vegetable, potatoes and tons of tapas...yumm!!!Very nice staff and quite accommodating since we were 7 and only had a table for 6! I would definitely go back again.
