Jarnac was a quaint, classy, french bistro with reasonable prices and more excellent food. The cassoulette was superb, as were all of the starters we sampled. The salads were fresh, and the fish was cooked to perfection. Their wine list was extensive and paired well with their fare. If you don't know what to get, ask any one of the knowledgeable wait staff. It seems much more like you are walking into a family's living room and kitchen at home than going out to a restaurant.

Pros: Great food, adorable ambiance

This is when the "french" aspect really came in to focus. This is not your typical night "haute". The formalities are revered at Jarnac but not fastidiously observed, as though we all KNEW the knights who dined to either side, but nary a "Sir" was heard all evening. And so it was with the food. To call it spare may mislead at first, but this must be said, if you come to Jarnac, leave your pretensions at home. If you need your maitre 'd with a side of contempt - and your hand-fed mozart-listening all organic nondenominational veal with a double portion of hand-blown willow puffs in glaze of darkened brinberry with a flatulated barley compote - you should probably stay home. The spareness is what makes this food work. It combines basic and beautiful flavors that work and play basically and beautifully with one another, with nuanced departures from the expected when "spare" is nearing "plain" . The riccotta gnochi my date ordered for his starter were an excellent example. They were served in browned butter and sage with bacon, - richness in an already heavy world,- but the choice of ricotta instead of, say, a more traditional potato, took this dish someplace we all like to go once in a while, "the lifestyles of the rich and Painless": a gnochi in butter and pancetta that you could eat four bowls of? Brilliant.

I went to Jarnac for the first time this saturday with one of my girlfriends. We did not know exactly what to expect and so went in with an open mind. We were greated warmly by the GM and taken into the dining room which was extremely warm and inviting (especially in the snow!) We decided to try the classic dishes of the restaurant. I got the Cassoulet and she got the sea bass. The food was right on the money. Warm, delicious, comfort food, and very French. Our waitress was extremely knowledgable about the menu and helped us make the right dining decisions. She was also spot on with the wine menu. I cannot remember a nicer time at a restaurant than my experience this weekend. We also met the owner who was 100% hands on which i happen to really like. I highly reccomend the restaurant.

Pros: Terrific Food and great atmosphere

We had a table of six on Saturday night, outside it was cold and snowing, inside was warm and inviting - you felt as though you were at a friend's country home in France. The manager was pleasant when making reservations on the phone and in person. The waitress was great, personable, knowledgeable yet unobtrusive. The menu is simple, but is prepared sublimely and the wine list is very well chosen encompassing all price points and tastes. The appetizers that our table ordered featured two types of pate, a potato cake and an asparagus/leek plate - the food was served hot and the chef executed perfectly. The main course ran the gamut from salmon over lentils to cassoulet - the salmon was light and flavorful while the cassoulet was hearty and rich (without being overbearing). I am typically not effusive over restaurants, in fact this is my first review - however the experience was so exceptional I thought it necessary to write. Use the restaurant for a special occasion - it will exceed your expectations.

Pros: food, service, ambience

Cons: none

Tiny and bustling with energy on a Friday night, the food was interesting and delicious, the service exemplary, the setting somehow romantic despite the inevitable buzz of a full house.

I've been to Jarnac 6 times over the past year and a half and each time the place hits a home run. The food is excellent, the ambiance perfect and the service is amongst the best in NYC. Perfect for a romantic dinner for 2 or a small group (but leave the kids at home). Jarnac is a great place to bring out of towners who will be charmed by the restaurant and the neighborhood. Jarnac scores with both the traditional French fare and more continental dishes (I had a Mahi Mahi that is the best I've had outside of Hawaii). The wine list is impressive and reasonable with good bottles in the $25-50 range. Prices in general are a bargain for what you get . A dinner for 3 with appetizers, drinks, entrees a bottle of excellent Sancere, desset and coffee came in at about $200 (before tip). Jarnac is a warm, friendly and wonderful place to linger over dinner.

Cons: restrooms not handicap accessible

Jarnac has become my favorite West Village restaurant- the service is fantastic and very friendly, the music is great, and the food is delicious. The owner makes it seem like you're at a dinner party in his house- he keeps us coming back. I like it on weeknights b/c there's a more romantic vibe- perfect for a date or with close friends. Cant rave enough!

We had a delicious dinner in this unpretentious West Village restaurant. It's cosy and comfortable and we can't wait to go back.

Went for an anniversary dinner. The food was good (I found it country French, and not too pretentious), the service prompt and attentive and down to earth, and the restaurant was cozy, yet classy. Would definitely recommend for a romantic night out or an intimate dinner where you want good conversation and gourmet food. The wine is also supposed to be superb, but I didn't try it that night.

A smallish quaint restaurant on a quiet corner in the West Village. Walked in around 8pm on a weekday night and every table was full. Waited about 10 mins for my table and the manager apologized profusely. The menu had a good selection of attractive options and the prices were reasonable for this type of establishment. The food was consistently very good across all our dishes, the help was very cordial. Net-net, I'd definitely go back and also would recommend it to friends.

Since we live in the West Village with trendy, noisy restaurants everywhere, we go to Jarnac when we want a tasty dinner in an atmosphere where we can hear the friends we're with. Though the place is small, there are sufficient choices on the menu, and everything we've had has always pleased us and the others at our table. The ambiance is sweet, service is pleasant and professional. Jarnac is our go to place and we're grateful to have it despite the continuing additions to our neighborhood, many of which are terrific. We've liked the salads, main courses and desserts.

Pros: Quiet, lovely food and service, reasonably priced

Cons: Haven't had any complaints

The first time we went to Jarnac for dinner was a Sat.night. It had great energy especially since the service is friendly and ready with reccomendations and the Host charms his way from table to table. We felt as if we had gone to a friend's home for dinner. The lighting and decor are warm and it was very cozy at our corner window table. I love the food, the beef Short rib was perfectly prepared and we shared the authentic duck rillettes as an appetizer (it melts in your mouth) and you have to try the grilled figs with goat cheese! We went back yesterday (Wed.) and enjoyed ourselves yet again in a quieter atmosphere to celebrate our anniversary at our new favorite place and the Host sent us home in a limo with a glass of champagne! (apparently they have a limo every wed. for their guests) Unbelievable! Jarnac is a gem, we are happy to share the secret.

Of all the restaurants in NYC, I am very disappointed that we ended up at this one. If you want to spend a lot of money for not much value, then this is the place for you. Except for the BLT, which my dining companion raved about, the food was mediocre and skimpy for the high price we paid. The wine glasses were half-filled and I've had better bread at the Olive Garden! I do not recommend this restaurant.

I've been enjoying the food and atmosphere at Jarnac for years now. I am so happy to say that they've resolved the only minor dining inconvenience at the restaurant. NEW AIR CONDITIONING!! It is extremely pleasant to eat at Jarnac during the hotter months of New York's summer which has made Jarnac the perfect spot for Sunday brunch or a summer evening out. The Jarnac BLT with pancetta and heirloom tomatoes is back and out of this world! I highly recommend it.

Having dined out in NYC for close to nine years now, Jarnac, a corner bistro we happened into about a year ago left us very pleasantly surprised. Absolutely *delicious* French fare (yum factor of 10), friendly and attentive wait staff, and an extremely warm environment make Jarnac the perfect place to have an intimate dinner. We were impressed by how comfortable it felt- like we'd been dining there for years. MUSTS: the Duck Rillettes, Grilled Rib Eye, "BLT Jarnac" with the Heirloom tomatoes. And until recently, we hadn't realized that Jarnac also gives a totally killer brunch. Noteworthy is its Chocolate Cherry French Toast which is to die for.... a bit pricey... it's well worth the sight of your slightly thinner wallet.

This is a quiet place with magnificent cuisine, a fantastic host, and quite possibly the best money spent on a romantic anniversary or special, yet intimate, occassion. For me, it is the epitome of special occassion dinner with a reasonable price value for an exquisite meal. Best dinner plate - the duck confit when its in season!

We were shocked to find out that a "special menu" meant a $75 prix fixe that consisted of an appetizer (this salmon thing that tasted like salmon pate from the grocery store), a main course (falafel + scallops??), a glass of "bubbly" (NOT champagne), and "dessert" (two cookies, a stale tart, and super stale mini muffin with frosting).

This was quite deceptive on the restaurant's part and they were blatantly taking advantage of Valentine's day. They were getting people in and out as fast as they could. My boyfriend feels terrible about ruining our first valentine's day ever.

Consistently excellent and satisfying seasonal menu, from blanquette de veau in spring to cassoulet in winter. Lighter fare just as pleasing. Wine selection is very good. Service friendly but not intrusive. True Bistro feeling on a lovely West Village corner.

When last in New York, I was a bit late on the ball in making dinner reservations for a Saturday night. After some searching I found this place and was surprised by the friendly voice on the phone who managed to work us in at 7:30. When we arrived, it was a bit empty but filled up quickly with what seemed to be many repeat customers. We were seated promptly and had full attentive service the entire meal from the host, all servers, and he chef herself. The Steak Diane and the skate we both wonderful and perfectly prepared. The wine list is large and varied, including some non-French wines. The pace of the meal was perfect and never rushed. The room is tiny and intimate, but sparsely decorated. I would have liked a bit more "charm" in the space. Overall, a great find.
