Checked this place out after searching on the net. Its exactly as it says - good ol fashioned fun. Come for a drink, be polite and talk to the regulars and you'll have a great time. Come with an attitude then forget about it. Had a great night with the boys. Had the owner greet us immediately and pour a couple of shots and it was superb from then on. Forget the club scene if you want good jukebox music, shoot a game of pool and get drunk. Best time I had in NY. Shout out to Mike and Billy from the boys from downunder.

The staff are rude and obnoxious. While I was there I witnessed homophobia and racism, to the point where one woman was violently thrown out, not because she was causing trouble (she wasn't, she was sitting alone having a quiet drink, looked like a businesswoman or something on her way home) but because, when some drunk guy hit on her, she politely informed him she wasn't interested and she was a lesbian. Next thing the bar tender is screaming abuse and she is dragged out. \n\nEven if this hadn't happened (and according to a few people who'd been before it happens a lot) I would never have gone back. It's dirty, the bathrooms are disgusting and the drinks are bad. The bartender spilled half my beer before he even gave it to me and didn't even apologise. \n\nDisgusting place, stay well away.

Like others have said... haven for anti-gay sentiment, in Chelsea no less!! Just in the short amount of time I was there, bartender regularly called people ""fagot"" and when they protested, he threw them out still yelling obscenities as they exited. And all the clientele seemed to back his actions! Felt like I was in the Twilight Zone!\n\nAnd if that wasn't bad enough, the place is really dirty (beyond ""dive bar"" standards), smells bad, the bathrooms are gross. \n\nDon't waste your time or money!

I beg of anyone that believes in equality to not support this hate filled bar. I recently moved to the neighborhood and stopped by Billy Marks to watch some tv and have a drink. I did not care to really converse but was asked by a few of the patrons if i was in a relationship. I informed them I was indeed with someone of the same sex and all hell broke out. The bartendar and owner (Mark) began to call me a F*** Fagget and told me my kind was not welcomed. He then demanded for me to leave as I sat there alone and cried. When I did not leave fast enough, he pushed me. As I was walking out the door he said don't worry about contacting the police because he was a former NYPD officer. I called the police, and of course they did nothing. One officer told me to read the Constitution because I had no rights. Where I am from, we don't greet our new neighbors with hatred. Please I beg of anyone that may read this, do not support their anti-homosexual establishment!

Haven for anti-gay sentiment. The bartender, Billy or Mark or a*shole, called my friend a f*ggot. When I confronted him about his language, he called me a fat white b*itch. Please, let this place close.

I would award this place ZERO stars if I could, but citysearch won't let me. The bartender called the male of our foursome a ""f*ggot"" (and the guy was straight ps--not that that excuses the bartender's behavior). When I told the barkeep that such language was uncalled for and derogatory he told me ""it's in the English language"" and then said my friends were just ""taking up space."" (Mind you, the place was completely empty besides one regular at the bar.) He also called one of my friends a ""fat white bitch"" when we confronted him about his language. We were honestly leaving the place respectfully, not causing any trouble, and he went out of his way to be an insulting jerk. This bartender was ignorant and offensive, and I can guarantee you me and my friends will never ""take up space"" there again.

Since I am in New York about once a month, I decided to go out and find a good neighborhood bar. After a quick search I found it. The place is something that reminds you of Cheers and has it's regular patrons. After a brief conversation, I was amerced into a fun loving atmosphere. This place does not care how you are dressed or where you come from. They do however, take care of people and look down on people who have bad attitudes. Billy went outside and smoked with my cousin and I on the street and we talked about everything from Corvettes to horse racing (the Kentucky Derby). Man, are these guys knowledgeable. I will be back each and every time I am in the city. \r\n\r\n

Pros: All things

Cons: They don't accept credit cards.

Don't expect models or snobbery, but if you want to listen to the jukebox, watch sports or shoot pool with real New Yorkers, go hang out with Billy or Mark - they're in there every night....Highly recommended

If you know upfront that this is a dive bar, you're ahead of the game. I didn't realize this and wasn't very happy with my experience - although my colleagues were. Based on that - and not mine (I prefer more upscale bars), I would say it was an OK bar.

This could be the rudest most unfriendly bar i the city. The owners are the bartenders and they won't pay any attention to you, but then when you don't have a drink they yell at you to either drink or leave. If you talk back they'll send one of their mentally challenged goons over to try and scare you. If this happens just drop them a simple mathematical addition question to really confuse them while you run for the door. Seriously, I don't recommend going here. You're only asking for trouble from one of the owners or their half-wit friends...

I had an internship in NY for a few months, and, though i knew almost noone, the guys at Billymarks' took me in and introduced me to everyone and I met a ton of people! Billymarks is the PERFECT dive bar! I LOVE the bartenders and the regulars (ESPECIALLY RALPHIE!! and CURLY JOE and those other guys who are AWESOME!!) and they are a true familiy to anyone who left their actual family at home to pursure their dreams in NY... Billy and Mark and the regulars are one of a kind and deserve the award for the best dive bar in the city, hands down!!! I just hope they remember me affer all these months (but even if they don't i'll be back to remind them, because they always say their children don't leave for good, they always come back, and don't worry... I'LL BE BACK!!... and they better still have my picture on the wall!!!) Long story short... GO TO BILLYMARKS!!!

On a solo weekend visit through the city for work, I decided on my off night to hoof it through the streets, determined to stop at the first place that seemed welcoming to the wayward stranger. After walking for two hours all the way from 50th down to 14th and to various points east and west, I had rolled snakeyes.\n\nThen, after seeing a person stumble out of the bar and hearing loud (loud) music, I knew that Billymark's was my place. It is all everyone prior has described, and after poking your head in the various scenester bars located throughout the area, it becomes much more enticing. Along with 119, it is on my must-do list for every trip hereafter.

BillyMark's is one of the last bars in New York where you can truly engage in interesting conversation without worrying if you're wearing the ""right clothes"" or know the ""right people"". Walk in and you're instantly transported to the New York of the late 70's/ early 80's; you might even believe that Ed Koch is still mayor! You can tell that Billy truly loves bartending and making everyone who walks in feel like they're part of the party. Part of the charm lies in its location, next to the back entrance of the Port Authority bus terminal on 9th Ave. Relatively safe in the daytime, although I wouldn't recommend women walking alone around there at night. Instead, get some of your other girlfriends, forget the stupid trendy lounges, come into BillyMark's, speak with some INTERESTING people, and have a GREAT time!

Pros: interesting people, great dive bar

Cons: bad neighborhood

New York, at least my New York, was always represented by the neighborhood bar. The emphasis is on neighborhood. We fantasized about it from TV with Cheers!, or cop dramas that visited the venerable watering hole in Kojak or The Equalizer.\n\nBilly Mark West is the last hold out to what a true New York bar is. From out of towners who have no idea why they drop in who in turn leave with a true feel of New York and its denizens to the neighborhood who wanders in and always know they are welcome.\n\nNo attitude, no airs, no boring wall streeters who have nothing else to talk about but their work day, no wannabes, no euro trash just the proper mix of what makes this city truley the greatest city in the world.\n\nBilly Marks West is the holdover to what makes this city great.

Pros: Service, Characters, not too crowded

It's almost too clean to be called a dive bar, but everything elese fits. It's a great homey kinda place. EVERYONE is ALWAYS made to feel welcome. Variety of cleintele. Cheap (dive bar definition) drinks/beer, great pours. It doesn't get any better as a place to drop in for a regular drink.

After family and career, a man's relationship with his neighborhood watering hole has been a most important one. Not a problem for the locals of northern Chelsea. Here, people are drinkin, joshin, listenin to tunes, shootin pool, throwin darts. You're a regular from the minute you walk in. There is a Billy, and there is a Mark, and at least one of the two of them will be there when you walk in--so say hi, grab a brew, and enjoy!

I've been a patron of Billymark's since they first opened up, and have absolutely loved it. Tons-o-fun and tons-o-drinks. The bar tenders are great... they'll dance and sing the night away with everyone, all while mixing up the most lethal concoctions you could ever dream of. All they need now is beer on tap to go along with everything else. And don't forget the new pool table, the killer juke box, and the pin ball machine. I highly recommend Billymark's to anyone who will set foot inside. It is THE dive to be at!

Last time I was in Billymark's West, with its percolating undertone of laid-back conversation and upper layer of cool, hit songs you remember singing in the shower way back when before you got all stiff and concerned with life, I remember thinking that this is the sort of place Hemingway must have been in when he talked about the whirl and gentle tug of happiness with the walls spinning and spinning while you sip the drink in front of you, surrounded by good people and their quiet comfortable lives. I suppose our lives aren't always quiet and comfortable, but when you're at the bar with one of the Penza's serving you drinks and chatting it up, it just seems that way.\n\nBesides, McSorley's is a run-down price-inflated teeny-bopper bar that's lost any character that artists like Edward Hopper and John Sloan endowed it with decades ago. So don't go there.

Message from Billymark's West

The best local bar in the city! It doesn't matter what you're wearing or who you are, you are welcome at this bar. There are only 2 employees - Billy and Mark. Brothers and owners of this establishment will treat you like you are one of their own. One of the greatest features of the bar is the juke box - Billy and Mark have hand selected a mix of blues, 80's rock, and classic rock. You will find nothing like it anywhere else. You can also shoot a game of pool or throw some darts.

Open 365 days a year - so celebrate a holiday at Billymark's West.

Billymark's is happy to host a personal party or corporate event and they're always looking to add new "regulars" to the list. Stop by and see why so many people agree this is the best dive bar in NYC!
