Counter

★★★★☆
Eat up: Counter has announced it will close in February of 2011. Counter, the clever little vegetarian bistro, is also an organic wine and martini bar. Literally hundreds of such wines are available, with even herbal vodkas making a more-than-cameo appearance barside. The food revolves on a seasonal basis and is therefore a sure thing for fresh, delicious green ingredients. The bar also has free appetizers from Sunday to Thursday.

Had a terrific meal at Counter tonight. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend the beet and arugula salads. Pomme frites were top notch paired with a harissa mayo and homemade ketchup; especially loved the raw cheesecake dessert. Prices are reasonable and am very fussy about coffee and theirs is the best! Service was attentive yet not intrusive and our server, Kirstin was knowledgeable and helpful - going back next week.

I had first visited Counter as a vegan while in college, many years ago (vague, as I am not trying not to date myself), and I must admit, because of this previously underwhelming experience, I was hesitant to return. However, upon hearing that they had a new chef and revamped menu, I decided to try it again, now as a vegetarian. Honestly, I felt stupid for not trying Counter sooner, after sampling several amazing "small plates" including intelligent pairings of quinoa, brussel sprouts with goat cheese, as well as a main course of seitan that changed my life. Portions were generous but not overwhelming, service was impeccable, and not once did we feel rushed. The vegan dessert selection trumps any other vegan dessert in the city and includes home made vegan ice creams and small cakes. Overall, Counter has been one of the best vegetarian experiences I have had in the city, and I now pledge to make it one of my regulars.

What self-respecting vegetarian who cares about animal rights, "organics" and "sustainability" would eat in a restaurant that covers all its furniture in dead animal skin? Uch! I mentioned the seemingly perverse "oversight?" of universally leather-upholstered furnishings to the host and he simply giggled, shrugged and muttered something like, "Well, maybe its fake leather." Wink wink. Is this place a sociological case study in the stupidity of well-intentioned New Yorkers???

Cons: Gross hypocrisy

I came here with a friend who thought I might enjoy the food because of the menu (I'm vegan). But I found the food boring and way too "earthy" for me. The service was just ok and the wine was limited - this life-long vegan rather go to a steak house with friends and enjoy a dry baked potato & a good glass of wine.

What a great place to unwind the knots that were so tightly bound throughout the week...I was in need of a big glass of anything alcoholic and some food to fill the longing belly after a few stressfilled day. Although my arm was just about to give up after 2.5 hours of straight writing, I pulled it together to come here with ~11 awesome individuals.

Counter was not expecting such a large group of people on a Thursday night but they worked their magic and quickly assembled a table to accommodate our party :)

I've been wanting to come here since I pass by everyday and I was not disappointed! How serendipitous that I would come during Rioja restaurant week where I only had to order a delicious cauliflower salad small plate to get a glass of organic Rioja together for 12$...I was sold! And I loved sharing every bite and every sip of that Rioja was priceless
The waiter we had was a little slow but maybe he was new and couldn't handle such a big group of demanding people :) I guess he deserved the 20% included tip @ the end.

I also tried their grilled eggplant with pomogranate seeds, and their mushroom leek flat bread.. like Pure Food and Wine, but I commend their creativity and their use of organic produce was delightful :)

It has been over 2 years since the day I transplanted to NYC from PA:)....and I would never thought I would survive the 1st year.
I am so grateful to have met more of these wonderful people and looking forward for a life in NYC if it'll continue to have me!

I love the food here. Everything is fresh and healthy and prepared in interesting and creative ways. The flavors are spot-on. Their desserts and especially their cocktails merit mention as well. I have heard people complain that the portions are on the small side and the place is a bit pricey. All true,. However, That's when you remind yourself that there is a cost to cooking totally FRESH food from LOCAL ORGANIC producers. I commend them and I loooooove their food.

Tried Counter for the last time the other night. It was my birthday night and I was eaten alive by bites on our legs in the seats.... yeah- and after my friend told me they were leather!!!!!!!!!!! leather seats in a vegetarian restaurant??? By the rash on my legs and my experience with bed b_gs before... I think the restaurant has an infestation.

The food was fine (although whom I found out later was the owner) but the person seating us with her mouth full of food was strange at best. After she sat us she yelled at one of her servers for not seating us fast enough. She then returned to the bar to eat her food and drink wine... then returned back to the floor to try to help someone. Someone should help her? A busboy whom didn't smile and took our plates away before we were done... was very disruptive. Our server whom was nice (thin female- sorry no name) had to apologize three times for her work mates actions.

Again the food was fine- with all the other mistakes... it seams domed to fail VERY soon. Good luck.

Pros: it won't be around for much longer

Cons: maybe a non-leather seat vegetarian restaurnat will open

I don't know how I happened upon Counter? I live in upstate NY and rarely venture to New York City. My friends live in the East Village and on a hot sweaty night we popped into Counter and had a wonderfully surprising evening. Most vegetarian restaurants have very little alcohol, which I love, and unimaginative food, but Counter had both in abundance. I dream about their heirloom tomato and watermelon salad. Check it out. It was an awesome surprise.

i'm sorry to say, but counter's new chef and the positive changes he is making, may turn off some of the old customers. in the past, the food has been very heavy and kind of boring. believe me, i tried it and vowed never to come back. however, for some reason, people really liked the blandness.

six years down the line i heard things were changing, and gave it another shot. this is truly what vegetarian/vegan food should be. fresh, local vegetables and fruits. not heavily laden with mock meats. amazing desserts that don't taste like the vegan dense, dry bricks that are far to common in this world.

i am truly one of the pickiest eaters in the city. i have been vegetarian for over 12 years, and believe me, would much rather go to a non-vegetarian restaurant that has fewer options, but with spot on food. the vegetarian restaurant scene in new york may be plentiful, but geesh, a small handful are worth going back to.

with that said - counter (current) is really raising the bar in my eyes. finally.

Firstly, i should say i really like this restaurant. I am a veggie, lacto ovo not vegn, but have always loved Counter since it opened. Now, however, the Chef has left and a new one is in place and the food last time we went (2 weeks ago) was just way below par. Everything seemed to have changed. We hope it is just the transition and Counter finds its way back but if you have been recently and it has been your first time; don't judge it on that soley. We hope the owners read these reviews and know they have a fan base but they need to get back to its original good form!

My family we love to go eat to Counter. My children love the deserts they have. I love the variety of raw foods they have. My husband loves the organic wines.:)This is an excellent family restaurant, the food is very good, healthy and taste delicious. They have a lot of choices and the deserts are fantastic. I love the idea of taking my children to a restaurant that offers such a healthy menu and is children friendly. SmileIf you are vegan, into raw foods or vegetarian, go Counter and try for yourself.

I loved the cauliflower risotto and I don't even like cauliflower that much. The bar gal, Tanya was knowledgable and funny and the drinks hhad such clever names:). Our waitress was very efficient. There was so much food and all of it good but I had room for the great chocolate dessert.
With a resturant like Counter, who needs meat?

I was here for brunch only. I got the tofu frittata which was kind of like a vegan eggs benedict. I think I would have loved it but there were a lot of unadvertised peppers in it, which I spent the meal picking out. They have a great muffin sampler that comes with different butters and nutella which was DELICIOUS! Not too expensive and nice atmosphere.

Counter is a beautiful restaurant - quiet and relaxed. The food was tasty and inventive. My husband had the cauliflower "risotto" which was really delicious and I had the seitan burger, which was fine. We aren't vegetarians, and my husband has a hearty appetite so I was a little concerned that he would come away hungry, but we were both satisfied without being stuffed. Service was good, but the menu seemed to rely overly much on seitan. I would have liked more choices.

I wanted to like this place, but unfortunately the food quality wasn't enough to justify the cost: a meal for 2, plus sangria: $80 :(

It might be that we ordered the wrong thing, but we got 4 things and of all of them I really only liked 1: The food was pretty mediocre.

Also, they say that it's tapas style, and recommend ordering 2 dishes person, but I think 2, maybe 3 dishes is enough.

This was my first time here, and I would definitely return. For appetizers we tried the 3-meze sampler (red pepper and eggplant "pockets"(?); assorted olives; spinach and feta "fingers"). I'd say this was just "ok". In addition, some of the sauces were surprisingly very spicy (a la Indian food), although this was not stated on menu. Other appetizer was a spinach salad with mango and slivered carrots. Not super tasty, but the spinach was extremely FRESH. For entrees, we got some type of a vegetable sampler (fennel, mushroom, carrot with cucumber, sweet potato with maple syrup, haricots verts, quinoa). The melange of flavors in this dish was EXCEPTIONAL, and one of the best meals I've EVER had! The other entree was like a terrine made of avocado, cucumber, and I think a type of cheese. Also QUITE good. Overall, the entrees we got far exceeded the appetizers. We did not get any dessert. Service was OK although the waitress did seem to forget about us once our meal was done, and we had to wait not only for the plates to be cleared, but again for her to take our credit card. But because our entrees were so good, I'd definitely return!

Wow...I've never written a bad review in my life, but seeing as I value other people's opinions for my own dining experience, I felt it necessary to comment on Counter. The actual restaurant was quite beautiful and I thought it would be a great place for a date. Unfortunately, the waitress never gave you more than 2 seconds before she ran off to tend to other customers. I at least hoped the food would be good. I ordered several appetizers, including the butternut squash soup, caprese, mushroom ravioli and hummus. The soup tasted like bland lentils, the ravioli was soggy, and the caprese came without crackers ... even though the waitress had told us it would. When the waitress stopped at the table she asked how the food was. Before I could say a word, she said "good, great!" and walked away. The dessert menu was thrown in our face before the main courses were ordered .... the waitress had forgotten. We skipped dessert and an entree and left shocked at what a bad experience we had after all the positive reviews we had read. The only nice things about the restaurant were the ambiance, the friendly restaurant host and the organic wines.

How could I have missed this place for so long?!? They have the best cauliflower risotto, and I hate cauliflower! I swear, it was so rich and creamy. It's my new favorite spot. 1st of all, really nice place. The decor, music, it was a pleasure to dine there. 2nd-the funniest cocktail menu...check out the 13"cucumber. But when my flaming queen arrived, on fire-so spectacular. The avocado salad was a meal by itself; lots of roma tomatoes, avocado, hearts of palm. This does it for me on so many levels. I will keep coming back!

warning: earth friendly wine/spirits/cocktails/teas may cause unending mental and/or moral 0rgasm for eco-conscious folk. it's snowing today, so stop buy for a cup of their hot chocolate with house-made vegan marshmallows. wine flights are some of the cheapest i've seen and the cocktail names/descriptions constitute better entertainment than most comedy clubs.

If you want bland, "well everything is great," pollyana-type waiters, this is not the place for you. The wait staff is opinionated on what's good, and will let you know what their personal favourites are, and why. Definitely go here, if for no other reason than to get outstanding service.

Meanwhile, the food is brilliant. The flavours are delicate, and the food is filling without leaving you feeling heavy.

I'd give Brunch a miss, however. Half the menu is eggs, and unlike the dinner menu, vegan options are not indicated.

As vegetarians that are always seeking out great vegetarian food in the city, we decided to give this East Village place a chance. However, we were very disappointed at the several Mezze platters and the few entre dishes we ordered at Counter. There was no real flavor to the food, so instead of relying on suberb ingredients it relied on constantly relishing each dish with a creamy sort of mayonaise. A lot of the dishes tasted the same! And it was way overpriced for what it was. There are numerous other vegeatrain resaurants but a third of the price that are far tastier and have way more delicious options. Those that like salads beware- just looking at the menu it is clear that inventive salads with filling and satisfying ingredients are nowhere to be found. So, to sum up, we did not even bother looking at the desert menu.

My fiance and I went to Counter last night for Valentine's. The prix-fixe menu was $65 per person, and though sounding rather light in print, I had high hopes. The meal was, at best, like a light lunch. It was under-conceived, underseasoned, and felt rather like a short series of appetizers ending with the dull thud of non-dairy(green tea?) ice cream in phyllo. No chocolate, no richness, no depth, no heat, and wildly overpriced. The wine was fabulous, as was the service. Quite a bit of fuss over very little; a disappointment to someone who rarely complains.

No chocolate, no richness, no depth, no heat, and wildly overpriced. The wine was fabulous, as was the service. Quite a bit of fuss over very little; a disappointment to someone who rarely complains.

I had the BEST Friday night hanging out with a friend at Counter.
I have never been to a vegetarian restaurant before. My friend happens to be vegan
and asked me to meet her at Counter for a drink after work. We spent the evening drinking a very
affordable & tasty organic Merlot and eating some of the best food that I've had in a long time.
The very handsome French bartender was pleasantly & tastefully flirtatious... & very, very funny.
The manager, a wine nut, practically gave us a wine 101 class. Counter is definitely a thumbs up!

If you are into wines or martinis (which is my speciality), then COUNTER is the place to be! They have many different types of infused vodka and, although I'm not much of a wine drinker, they definitely have some I would love to try next time I go. The Dirtiest Martini is the best and the Angry Lesbian is divine! Come on, with a name like "Angry Lesbian", who wouldn't want to try it?

I have wanted to go into Counter for a while, and possibly have built up some expectation of it in my mind. I was a bit disappointed when I finally tried it. The service is not the best in the city, to be polite, but that's fine. I had the chef's special - which was indeed very very good. Two of my friends had something very forgetable and none of us were impressed, especially for something that price. On top of it, we almost had to keep our plates on our knees because there was simply no room on the miniscule table for three plates. Everyone was very displeased, especially after paying a $100 bill for 2 entrees, 1 salad and tea!
I would only go back for a quick drink and maybe for the special. Overall, it's a skip.

Counter has had its ups and downs, but Fall '06 is definitely up. The newest version of the menu is great, there is a good wine list with all sorts of biodynamic and organic wines. I switched to vegetarian / vegan eating solely for health reasons. I miss meat and cheese ALL of the time. This was the first time in 6 months that I REALLY enjoyed a meal out and didn't feel like I was missing anything. This is veggie food for non-vegetarians.

Cons: Not the nicest decor, no meat options for the true carnivores in a party.

I came to Counter with a party of 9 for a birthday dinner. My friend, who is deathly allergic to some nuts, specifically asked the waiter if the dish she was ordering contained peanuts, cashews or pine nuts. She was told it did not and later had to be taken to the emergency room and given a shot of adrenaline as she was on the verge of going into anaphlyactic shock. She later called the restaurant to ask the ingredients of the dish she had eaten, and was told that it contained pine nuts. The waiter clearly did not check with the kitchen about what the dish contained and endangered the life of my friend. The management has treated this incident very flippantly. Avoid this place at any cost -- they purport to care about their customer's health but they clearly do not.

Went with my girlfriend and her family last month. The food was prepared very nicely and the decor was very comfortable. Low light setting for romatic ambience, but was a bit too low that we have to use the candle on the table to see our menu. I felt the price was a bit pricy for the food, but a definitely good dating spot. Table was a bit small, but good for two ppl or dating setting.

Went here with a big group for bachelorette party and had a wonderful meal. The service was great. I had the veggie Napoleon, which was awesome and filling. Stay away from the Pear martini...it has smoked vodka, so it tastes a bit like beef jerky.

Normally, on my birthday everything is planned so the evening is perfect. This year however, we changed the tradition and didn't plan anything, which is risky with a perfectionist like myself. But, my husband and I decided to try Counter. As a birthday perfectionist, I could not have planned it better!
The food was amazing, everything from our 3 Mezze Apps, to our delicious Lentil Terrine (which my husband, a meat eater, was very satieted with), to the complimentary birthday dessert. Nothing was left to chance here.
We were not only tended to by an excellent waiter, who though very busy, gave us wonderful service, but also the GM who made sure my birthday dinner was perfect. And when the bill came at the end, I was pleased to see we did not break the bank for my birthday.
Thank you Counter! We will be back.

Earl Gray-infused vodka martini sounds great, but tastes just alright. The meal that I had (the non-meat meatloaf, the califlour risotto, and some appetizers) was VERY heavy. The server said it was "hearty" but really it was just heavy. For a vegan restaurant, it's a very non-vegan friendly restaurant, as in you can bring meat-eaters and they would probably be impressed a little bit. But, quickly all would realize that most items on the menu are grease-laden, and the portions are so big that you'd get tired of the flavors before you finish half a plate.

I'm vegetarian, my fiance is not, and Counter is by far our favorite restaurant. Whether we're seeking a casual meal and sangria with friends, or a romantic evening with a bottle of organic wine followed up by one of Counter's amazing vegan desserts (the chocolate tart with berry sauce is our favorite), we always leave satisfied and impressed by the service and ambiance. The food is amazing and we're always asking ourselves "how can this be vegan?" because the flavors are so rich and diverse. The decor is warm and hip with diner-style tables that are casual enough to make everyone feel welcome anytime. The entire staff (from bussers to owners) is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and genuine. Counter is honestly one of my favorite things about trips into NYC.

we took our family (including two small children) to counter on a sunday afternoon. my husband and i could not get over the child friendly atmosphere and service but this would also be a place to go with just the two of us later in the evening. the look of this restaurant is cool and hip but unpretentious and the same goes for the wait staff. i can't speak highly enough of the food, presentation and wine list. we are NOT vegans but the food left us satisfied and in disbelief of how delicious it all was. the waiter offered us a perfect wine recommendation for each of our courses and the kitchen whipped up a special soba and peanut sauce dish for the kids. we will most certainly be back soon.

I think I have found my new favorite restaurant--Counter! Had dinner there the other night. Cauliflower "Risotto" was super yummy and really special. It's made with cauliflower, wild mushrooms, and no rice at all. The French Lentil and Wild Rice Terrine (this is what one of my friends got) was also delicious! Wine list seemed extensive and our server knew a lot about what they had... organic and biodynamic wines--the perfect compliment to a great dining experience. I also liked the atmosphere--hip, but not trendy--and the bathroom was nice and clean. Go there and eat and drink.

'Counter' is definitely our spot. I'm a huge fan of the homemade sangria & the walnut-lentil panini, and he loves the veggie burger. Also, expect wonderfully friendly bartenders who are always ready to recommend an outstanding bottle of wine. Go check it out!!!

I recently had dinner at Counter and my dining experience from beginning to end was unexpectedly fabulous. Not only is the restaurant beautiful and sexy but the food blew me away. I loved their grilled romaine salad and cauliflower risotto with wild mushrooms. I also loved their bathroom, sleek, clean and spacious.

I went to Counter last night with a friend and we were pleasantly surprised. I love wine. Their selection of organic wines was impressive and affordable and the food was delicious. I especially enjoyed their cauliflower risotto. My friend had grilled polenta with morels and I haven't had a better polenta anywhere. Everything was pretty much top notch.

Vegetarianism with class and style. Its so nice to have a place I can take even my meat eating friends too for a fantastic organic meal with a lot of style and a lot of class. The wine bar really set this place apart from so many other vegetarian restaurants in the city. I had never really thought about organic wines before my Counter experience but now that I have tried them i will certainly be trying more... and with such a huge wine list I have my work cut out for me...

I really did have such a great experiance.

I ate at Counter with some friends last night and had an amazing dining experience. The food was inventive and so delicious, I didn't miss the dairy or meat (I am not a vegan). We ordered a bunch of different dishes to share and everything was excellent. Highlights include the vegetable strata and the califlower risotto. AND, don't forget to order dessert - Go for the chocolate torte and the ice-cream sundae! Plus it has a great atmosphere, pleasant service and very good wine. I can't wait to go back!!!

went with a friend last night. he's a vegetarian, im not (though i do LOVE my share of yummy veggies, tofu, tempeh, et all) both of us were not impressed. the atmosphere was made "cooler" only by its dim lighting. otherwise nothing adorns the walls, albeit what looks like a dirty fish tank in the back. not really romantic as its a rather sparse space. we both ordered apps and entrees. presentation was nice and descriptions on the menu were certainly intriguing but otherwise nothing had any flavor. reall, really bland. overall, my opinion is that its faaar better than angelica's kitchen but at the prices they charge for what it is they are really serving, you're better off with a bowl of brown rice.

I first went to Counter just to get drinks and dessert and was pleasantly surprised at how good all the food smelled. We ordered a raw dessert that was excellent.

When I went back a second time, I found the food to be quite tasty. Highly recommended!

As I am a nonvegetarian, I found that counter is a little tastier than most vegetarian resteraunts but of course you will be paying up the wazoo for it.
Biggest problem was :
The service at the bar was awful and tacky.
We ordered a bottle of wine ,$60 while we were waiting for the rest of our party. The bartender made us pay immediately and looked on at us assumingly. Kinda rude.
Once seated the table service was better.
I wouldn't return back to the place unless I had rich vegatarian relative in town picking up the bill and fortunately for me I don't.
