Deli  5 Star Rating - World class

This place has been around since 1888 with the slogan of "send a salami to the boys in the army". Its a must go, my favorite is pastrami on rye and at $15.00, I would not bat an eyelash, thats how terrific it is. The pastrami melts in your mouth and always warm. Its the best.

Katz's Deli, I'll have what she's having  3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

When we walked in, the place was jam packed with people waiting in line nearly out the door..What I didn't realize at first was that these people were waiting for take out or for self-service. Upon entering you are given a ticket that you better not lose, or else!! This ticket is the way the establishment knows how many enter each day and you have to show it when you leave along with your paid receipt. Without it you have to pay a flat amount to leave.

The decor is very simple with formica tables and a fifties kind of look. Nothing spiffy to write home about.

A little Tidbit: Katz's is noted for more than the food, not only is it one of the oldest delis in New York, founded in 1888 in the Lower East Side when the area was teeming with immigrants who wanted a nice Kosher meal..It's also noted for the famous scene in which Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in the movie When Harry met Sally

We sat at a long table, near a long wall, shared with others who immediately starting talking to us about the food. Along that wall are photographs of many of the celebrities that have eaten at Katz's over the years. Everyone from George Burns to Woody Allen. These pictures alone are worthy of a visit to see those autographed photos of the celebrities who loved this place thoughout it's historic past.

When our waitress arrived she had the pickles and pickled tomatoes we were craving. But, what to order?? She handed us a menu with so many choices it was almost impossible to decide but hubby and I decided to share two of our favorite sandwiches, Chopped Liver on Rye with tomato & onion and a lean Pastrami on a roll..The food was good but not the best that I've had and the egg creme was just so so..

I don't think I would go back but it was a fun trip to see the place

PROS: An Icon in New York
CONS: Food was good but not the best I've had

A New York institution  5 Star Rating - World class

Long before Katzs was made famous in When Harry Met Sally it was known throughout the New York area as one of the best Jewish delis in the city. When visiting there today, the numerous pictures of presidents and movie stars eating there attests to this. Katzs Pastrami on rye is out of this world and even at the staggering price of nine bucks a pop, its a deal considering that the sandwiches are so large they are difficult to get in your mouth.
