I have recently discovered this mid town gem. The scotch menu is probably the best in the city. I had one of the best bartenders I've ever met Amanda help me with my selections. When we sat down for dinner our server Tracy was extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was great and the staff made you feel right at home. I look forward to visiting again soon and getting some more scotch tips from Amanda.

Maybe the pub grub is the way to go with this restaurant. The service was terrible & there wasn't any Scottish dishes on the dinner menu (ended up ordering the filet mignon which wasn't bad but not what I wanted to eat at a Scottish restaurant). The night started out that they didn't have any Tenant's Lager on draft, which really isn't a big deal, but the waitress got annoyed when I asked for a few minutes to go through the beer menu to find something else. Then, when we asked the waitress if they had a Haggis dinner (instead of the appetizer) the waitress jumped to tell us that we have to spend $21.95 per person (which me & my fiance thought was fairly rude considering that we weren't trying have a cheap dinner & to be accused of it made me want to walk out the restaurant on the spot - the only thing that stopped me is that it was our anniversary & I didn't want to ruin the night). The haggis appetizer we ordered was awful because the haggis was all moist & pale in color (it tasted like the bag had burst & water had gotten into the haggis). The entrees were prepared well & were good, but like I mentioned earlier, I was really hoping for a Scottish dish. To top off the night, the waitress never asked one how our meal was or if we needed a refill on our drinks (so we only had one drink each, which we both finished shortly after the meal came to the table). I would possibly give their bar menu a try, but would never go there for dinner again.

After an afternoon of pub crawling I brought one of my friends to ST. Andrews. I actually have eaten there before. I try to eat there at least twice a year. I find it very charming. I was glad to sit down and have a nice chilled magners. We both ordered fish and chips. It was one of the best I have had on this side of the atlantic. I love the fact it is just one piece of fish with a llittle chips. Everyone one there is extremely friendly and accomondating. My friend had never been there before and didnt know you are not able to order the pub grub in the back of the restaurant and we were seated back there. They had absolutley no problem serving us fish and chips I can not wait to go there again!!!!!!

Pros: Magners and other obscure drinks available

Cons: small, the entire menu should be the same for the entire place

I recently moved offices just around the corner from St. Andrews.....very convenient! Its the place to be if you enjoy whiskey they have hundreds of single malts behind the bar.. One of the top authentic spots I've seen in Manhattan. The kilted bartenders know exactly what they are serving and dont just recite some mumbo jumbo lable discription when educating you on the whiskey you're buying. The food is very good, I have only eaten from the bar menu but they offer a full dinner menu also. Try the haggis, you may be as reluctant as I was but you'll be in for a pleasent surprise. The bar can get a little crowded but theres plenty of seating, and its well worth the wait, if only for the beer list, there must be 200 choices!

Pros: Impressive beer and scotch menu

Cons: Sometimes a wait for a table.....but it is mid town!

I love love love this restaurant. Kilted bartenders never disappoint with their suggestions. If you like beer try the Belhaven Wee Heavy or McEwan's. I tried Haggis for the first time here and it was delish, who knew? After our perfectly cooked Filet Mignon and Striped Bass, our friendly waitress recommended the Sticky Pudding for dessert...ssssoooooo gggoooooodddd! Warm atmosphere, I'll be back again and again.

Pros: Food, Drinks, Service, etc...

Cons: Times Square area is the worst place to be in NYC

.

St. Andrew's is a great steak house, especially for those who appreciate the pride of Scotland and its people. Excellent food, and one of the few places you can try authentic Haggis if you dare. The beer and ale selection is very solid, I recommend the Belhaven Scottish Ale. A great place to meet friends and clients alike. If business travelers are looking for a NYC restaurant to call their own, St. Andrew's is an excellent choice. The wait staff is largely from Scotland, although I once called to make a reservation and the host was of far eastern descent. There is nothing wrong with that per se, but I was looking forward to the authenticity that the restaurant is known for and it was like a kick in the kilt! My last attempt to eat there was met with great disappointment as the kitchen was closed on a Tuesday night! Overall I strongly recommend St Andrew's.

I am a single-malt-Scotch lover and I used to work in the Belasco Theatre, right a cross the place. I haven't seen that many Scotch bar in Manhattan. They have massive collection of single malt Scotch Whisky. The bartenders are great and knew very well all of Scotch Whisky they serves. Especially Roger the funny guy. He will talk to you anything about Scotch Whisky and Beer, when you ask. About the food? I don't know that much about it, since I only hang out there for drink. Especially for single-malt-Scotch from Islay. Like Laphroaig, Lagavulin etc. Just remember! This is not a dive bar !!! Also don't forget to leave good tips to the staffs !!!

This is my living room in mid town. This is where i can settle in for a quiet 'pint' in the evening after a long day and not be bothered by the hustle of outside. The staff are accommodating, warm and friendly; always there to serve you but not pushy. When i have guests in town or i am catching a play i stop by for a great bite. Try the bangers and mash on the ethnic side or the scallops on the eclectic side. The memu is extensive and great value. Enjoy this place with a pint of plain or a glass of Sancere.

The welcome and ambiance were warm on a bitterly cold Good Friday this past Easter when I walked into St Andrews looking for a break from the Mid Town hustle and bustle. It was the perfect storm of chatty attentive staff, good natured patrons, satisfying food and ample drink options that held me hostage there for most of my weekend stay. Whether popping in for a swifty or staying for the night, you won't leave disappointed.

My wife and I stumbled upon this place while on holiday in New York. From the moment we walked in the door we new we had make the right decision. The hostess greeted us with a big smile and we could not get over the selection of whiskey (250)and all the bar tenders in kilts. We had the prix fixe dinner which was the best meal and best deal we had seen during our stay. The waitress suggested the Wine dinner for $49.95 which was a bargain but it was late and we were tired. Our meal was excellent. My husband the chicken and I had the salmon. Our waitress suggested stopping by the grill on the way out and enjoy the celtic music but we were tired. Its a pitty we did not find St. Andrews a little earlier in our visit. We hope to return. Its a 'must do' if your visiting or even for the locals. Thanks we had a great time.

I love this place. Have been coming here since their doors opened and have to say that they have the best bar food in the city. Have had almost everything on the menu but the "stand outs" for me are their awesome ribs and the Horseradish Salmon. If you are hungry and thristy in mid-town definately give this place a try, you won't regret it!!

We've all been to plenty of places that try a little too hard to be casual and interactive, St Andrews isn't one of those places. The staff is so genuine and friendly it can't be an act. Our waitress was so wonderful we hated to have to leave. I'm a scotch drinker but the two other people were new to it. Asked for suggestions for scotches and everyone was exactly as discribed. Oysters were WONDERFULLY fresh and tasty and thier pretzels (I know it's just a pretzel) are exactly what you want.

Strongly recommend

St. Andrews is a fantastic restaurant. The food is consistently delicious and innovative. The menu has choices for every type of customer and the food always stands out in presentation and taste. I always leave St. Andrews totally satisfied with both the food and the service. From the moment I walk through the door and have a drink with the friendly and attentive bartenders to the moment I get seated in the dining room the experience is impeccable. I will always come back to St. Andrews and highly reccommend it. At night after a show one cannot go wrong stopping in and enjoying the food, service, and ambience. Truly an excellent place.

If I have to go out in the Times Square, for lunch/dinner/drinks, I generally pick St. Andrews. The food is above average for pub fare - I've always enjoyed the fish dishes (crab cakes/salmon/oysters). Plus they have an excellent beer list in bottle and draft (20 oz pints).

Just left St Andrews, one of my favorite places in NYC. Can't believe anyone did not enjoy it there. The service is always great, guys in kilts and smiling waitresses make you feel so at home. The ribs- to die for, the salmon - delicious and all that scotch - trying to work my way through the list.
Try it you'll love it as much as I do.

The staff was very tolerant of our ever-expanding selves. Our waitress always wore a smile-- despite her refusal to take (or even touch!) a drink club card when it was offered to her. Ah well, anybody know how to say "Don't worry, no cooties" in Scots Gaelic? The food was excellent, though the "haggis" was more like shephard's pie, than the real thing. meat and potatoes... where's the stomach? Ribs were excellent, but somehow unauthentically Scotch. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC Drinkers

This restaurant is sort of bland. Everyone was very nice and friendly and relaxed. The food came out pretty fast and the waitress was very attentive. I had the trout which was bland and my friend had the Salmon which was delicious. I had the haggis which was fabulous and my friend had the Caesar salad which was nothing much. For dessert we had sticky toffee pudding, the most delicious thing on earth. Order it.
The bill was $108 which is very reasonable.

The wait staff very nice. Ribeye steak was very tough, would never ordered it again. Friends had the ribs and lamb, which was good. Creamed spinach was excellent as was the raw bar. I would not make it a regular stomping ground but would go back.

I first went on a Thursday night. Up front is more of a pub and the back is the nice dining room. My glass was empty for all of 3 seconds before the lady asked if I'd like another and the food was amazing (try the trout!). The people were friendly and you wouldn't believe the scotch list! It's bigger than the menu! . Oh the prices were great too - it's right near times square so you'd think you'd be gouged but I swear it's cheaper than one of those crappy chain restaurants but with (like I said in the title) great food and great service. The place was full pre-theatre but I didn't feel rushed and if you go after theatre starts you get a fairly quiet dining room. The staff actually answers questions you might have, knowledgably! I left feeling happy and full.

Just got back from having my Mum's 50th birthday celebration at St. Andrews. She is Scottish, and so is my godfather, and wanted a taste of what she grew up with. First of all, the service was fantastic. They were all very kind and knowledgeable. Everything we ordered came out fast and fresh. The food was delicious - we all tried something different but several of us had the prix fixe and it was a great deal. I'm so glad we went - we did make reservations before hand since we were a large party, but our table at the front gave us a good view of all the walk-ins who didn't get seated, so make a reservation soon!

Went here based on Citysearch recommendations, but service was slow and they jecked up the price of the prix fixed menu that was posted outside by adding $2 more to begin with and then extra for the coffee that was supposed to be included.

After many years living in St Andrews, Scotland, it's great to find a little corner of Fife transplanted to Broadway. The restaurant in the back is excellent (esp. the salmon) but pricey. I prefer the top-notch pub grub in the bar. The haggis isn't authentic (not nearly enough fat), but some would say that's a good thing!

This Scottish bar is like any other bar as far as food is concerned-average. I'll even go one further and say there isn't much room in their dining area. Go in, grab a stool and enjoy the great beer selection or any of their single malt scotches. Both their beer list and their Scotch list go beyond 100 count. That, served by a man in a kilt that ain't just wearing a uniform! Great place for a real drinker.

As a local its always good to find places to go, even in tourist traps like TSQ. First visit was pleasant enough, two subsequent visits...all bad. Service and attitude is horrendous. Sitting towards the front of the bar/restaurant could be a pleasaurable experience if the wait/bar staff did not so resent waiting those tables. On the last visit I was with a friend, there were SIX other individuals at approx. 20 tables, after 5 minutes of waiting, we were asked to move to a "two person" table to make room for larger parties (we were at a "four person" table, then waited nearly 10 minutes with no return visit from the bartender. This is how ridiculous service is here. Otherwise, average at best. Will not recommend.

Whether sampling the bar food or going for the whole sit-down experience St. Andrews is really a top notch eatery. The best scotch selection I've come across in this city and many a great, great beer to accompany them. The live music is always terrific and adds to an atmosphere that was almost perfect to begin with. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly; two things that are tough to come by in NYC these days(you know what I mean). The scotch there is VERY pricey, but if you have a modecum of interest the like, price will not stop you. I could go on, but what for...?

Spent a week in September in NYC. Ate at St. Andrews and was very impressed. Although pricey, the food was incredible. I've eaten at a lot of restaurants in my life, but this is the only one I have ever loved this much. I had the Honey Thistle Chicken with mashed potatos and spinach. Could not praise it enough. Amazing. Will be returning in December after Christmas just to have dinner there again. Highly recommend!

Walking in finds the pub side of the place. Walk a little further and you'll find the dining section. I went on a Friday nite and the place was sparcely seated. The server was friendly and was available but not pushy. I had a special, a tuna steak with spinach and other veggies with red pepper sauce (yum) and my date had a NY Strip with mashed potatoes. It is a nice twist on simple foods while offering the basic appetizers (calamari, shrimp) and a pleasing selection of entrees, especially for me, since I'm a fish person. Not extravagant or fancy, but reasonably priced and a nice quiet place to eat some good food.

Cons: a bit quiet

Food and ribs are always good. This would be a great place with the exception that the service sucked. The nine little indians that run around with their surly attutudes have no idea what the concept of service is. Face it honey, you will be working here for the rest of your life, get used to it. Broadway hasn't called for a reason. Except the 18% gratuity automatically added in, and dont forget to appologize when asking for a condiment... you are interrupting a waitresses conversation.

Heard so much about St. Andrews had to try it, it topped off my weekend of letdowns. Poor cuts of meat, quite fatty, not to mention horrible and unattentive waitstaff in dining. The bar however is another story, great celtic music, good crowd, bar staff were friendly. Go back for the bar.

What a surprise! I walked past a huge bar W/ tons of beers & whiskeys to find a welcoming dinning room in the back. The service was great - super friendly. I had the $27.95 price fix opting for salad, ribeye & creme brulee ALL DELICIOUS! my friend went for the scallops, they were also delicious. Can't wait to go back.

Scottish/golf themed restaurant serving honest to goodness Brit food. Solid service and food, pleasant antique inspired dining area and bustling atmosphere. I've been there at lunch and like it for that and for a feed of meat and potatoes.

Came with a party of 4 for an early dinner on Sunday, Dec. 29. I ordered the tuna steak. Sent it back the first time because it and the vegetables were cold. It came back on a new plate, still cold. Gave it back to the waitress and requested a shrimp cocktail as I hoped there was little chance they could do a poor job on that. I was wrong. My companions had the stuffed trout (very mediocre), scallops (good but not great) and the salmon (good). Dessert was poor as well (crème brulee, apple crisp were just as tasteless as could be; but the cheese cake was very good) The coffee was barely warm. When I got the check, they had included the tuna steak I had sent back. It was removed when I brought it to their attention. There are many better options in the area.

We had a group of seven, five between the ages of 26 and 19. All had a great time. The food was great, and the atmosphere was just cozy. We were really impressed with the collection of Scottish whiskeys and beer on tap. We enjoyed the honey chicken, steaks, tuna, and the seafood combination of clams, oysters, scallops, shrimp, etc.(paella like). Everyone was thrilled with the restaurant choice I made.

Walking distance to all the theaters, midtown, Times square. Excellent pub-fare with upscale pub atmosphere. Honored e-reservation with no problem, and sat us early (I have to admit I was a little weary).

We dined there post-theater on Sat. 11/16/02. For $27.95 each 2 in our group had a wondeful salmon, creme brulee, sorbet, tea, salad, and escarole soup special. The $16.95 ala carte Grilled Rib-eye was tasty as well. Nice decor, pleasant service, recommended.

Thought this place was only a bar. Very good food and attentive service. They do a very good job in getting you out in plenty of time for a show. Would definitely go back

My baby back ribs were so tender. My dining companion's fish was quite good. The service was prompt, but not pushy, and they got us out in time for us to catch our show.

Great service, enormous selection of Malt scotch and good draught beers. The food was quite passable but not extraordinary. Quite happy to find Ova Scotia (scotch eggs) on the menu, but they could have a little more spice to them.
Surroundings were very pleasant, a good place for the young professional to meet or entertain.
Service staff very friendly and attentive.

St. Andrews is a great bar to sample great "pub grub." They've got beers from around the world and some of the best chips (fries) this side of the pond. The service is terrific and the bartenders are great guys. I' recommend this bar to just about anyone and you could probably get away with taking your kids there during the day. Definately chick it out.
