Maybe it's due to my small-town Midwestern roots, but I'll probably never get used to New York-style "supermarkets". They're cramped, dirty and overpriced.

When International Fine Fare sprang from the ruins of a decrepit old A&P market about 10 years ago, I had high hopes that our neighborhood would finally get a clean, modern, intelligently-managed supermarket. 'Twas not to be.

International Fine Fare does have a relatively decent selection of foods (the key word being "relatively"). And the prices are not too bad, considering the locale. But that's where the kudos end.

For some unfathomable reason, the store management insists upon restocking the shelves during shopping hours. Which means that customers must constantly try to squeeze past the piles of boxes, step over and around the plastic crates, etc. Practically no forethought has been given to customer convenience.

More fundamentally, the quality is spotty. The produce is generally better than it used to be. Some of the meats are downright scary. And the store itself is frequently dirty.

Item of interest: International Fine Fare recently made the NY Daily News list of "two worst supermarkets in Manhattan" - for two years in a row! That's of all the supermarkets in the entire borough, folks!

I think they've cleaned up their act somewhat since then. But that doesn't mean they don't still have some way to go...
