This salon is the place to go! The haircuts and styling are "off the hook"! I've never been disappointed with a cut or color or anything else, and I always feel beautiful when I walk out of the salon. Anne's artistic talent is outstanding.

This place is so low key you could easily walk past it, but amazingly this where NY's finest cutters and colorists work. I've had colors, cuts and big-occasion up-dos and I've never been anything less than delighted. Get an appointment with either Ann or Devon -- they're both genius.

I don't live in NYC anymore, but every time I come back to visit from Florida I go back to see my old friend Ann for a haircut. She gives me a perfect haircut every time. I would definitely recommend that family and friends use her. You won't be disappointed.

Anne gave me a gorgeous color and cut. I don't normally like the way stylists style my hair when I get a service, but I felt gorgeous when I walked out. My mom and sister have both made appointments.

I will only say that I travel over an hour to get to Riah and it is TOTALLY worth it. I also NEVER submit reviews, but this salon is worth it. Ann and Devon are awesome, caring and truly talented.

I've been going to Riah for almost 8 years. I work in the magazine/fashion business and always have access to various salons and I would never change! In fact, every time I get my cut/color done at Riah, people always ask me what salon I go to and then also become loyal clients. The owner of Riah, Ann Minahan, is extremely passionate and devotes several hours to making me feel confident and sexy when I leave the salon. It is truly always a fantastic experience. I feel so lucky to have discovered Riah when I first moved to NY and can't imagine going anywhere else... You must go!

if ann can take my limp mousy brown hair and transform it into a lusterous golden mane, i'm convinced she can do just about ANYTHING. i love the fact that no matter how bad a day i'm having, i always like the way my hair looks, and that is completely thanks to ann.

not only do her cuts look great right out of the salon, they grow out beautifully. 2 and even 3 months after a haircut by ann, i continue to get regular compliments on her work.

ann and devon make a great team and cultivate a calming and therapeutic vibe in their salon. i always leave riah a happy camper!

Until RIAH, I had tired of being treated as nothing more than a head-of-hair when I walked in the door. A perpetual victim of hideous color, fried locks and miserable cuts, I had lost faith.

After a couple years "in hiding", I mustered the courage to try again, did my research, found Riah, and booked an appointment with Ann. It was my best decision ever!

Ann and Devon LISTEN and CARE about your concerns, opinion, wishes, your hair, and YOU. Whether you want the same color and style relentlessly, or are adventurous and wild, your requests will be honored and executed to perfection.

The salon is wonderfully located, unique, intimate, warm, and funky.

I will NEVER trust my hair to anyone other than Riah!!

Thank you, Ann & Devon!!!! Becca

When my hairdresser of 20 years had to stop cutting hair due to an injury, I found Ann through the recommendation of a friend. For years, I had been struggling with 'wings' that seemed to emerge from the sides of my hair. One haircut from Ann, and poof! Wings gone! Ann really knows how to layer hair, she really listens to her clients and wants to give them the haircut they came for. It's all about you, not her--which I've found unusual with many hairdressers. Both Ann and Devin have real style--original without being over the top. I love Riah!

I've been going to Riah for almost three years after two of my roommates (and their fabulous haircuts) referred Ann.

Highlights:
My hair is much healthier since going to Riah. Ann uses a tint, rather than a bleach, to get my hair a natural looking blonde that blends into my light brown hair. That also helps because I'm sure I should go back more often to keep the roots at bay, but at the end of three (and sometimes even four) months, they don't look that bad. Sometimes I go lighter and sometimes I go darker, but she always works with me. And my favorite thing is, the highlights look like the color really could be my own. I like a natural looking pattern rather than stripe-y look, and she can do whatever you prefer.

Haircut:
The shape of my head, fine hair, and the size of my ears all play into what I can do with my hairstyle. I look best in a bob, which isn't all that exciting but at least it never really goes out of style. I try variations on bobs, but basically it's always the same. So haircuts don't excite me that much, but what does excite me is the feel of my hair after a cut at Riah. The aforementioned roommates with their long, luscious layers always looked like really expensive cuts, like every hair was in the perfect spot even when they did it themselves. But the kicker that got me started with Riah was how they said it felt like a good cut. And now I know what they mean. A bob seems pretty simple, but it's amazing how one person can do it better than everybody else. My hair feels light and even, not weighted down in various spots. Nothing feels out of place. It's even in weight and thickness all around, and she's conscientious of my part.

Ann and Devon:
They are really laid-back and listen to what you say/ask and then they take time to think about what they are going to do. I hate when places plop you down and start the process and then ask you what you want when they already have an idea of what they are going to do. I see Ann four to six times a year and she always remembers what we talked about the last time I was in, both about hair and chit-chat.

Salon:
I like that it's so small. It's homey and warm, and I never feel rushed. It's downtown NY. If I wanted a big salon, I'd go elsewhere. This is like a hidden gem that a hip friend tells you about rather than the super luxe and uber trendy NY salon you'd see in a movie. It's good to be in on the secret!

I have been going to Riah since I moved to NYC. Ann also did my hair and make-up for my wedding. I love her, she is so laid-back, she listen to what I want and does not push styles or products on me. Everyone always compliments me on my haircolor, which appears very natural. She knows how to tame my unruly curly hair.

I went to every top place in NYC. I even tried a famous
salon in London. I always ended up disappointed. I read a review about Ann on Citysearch and the reviewer said the
same thing. Then they went to Ann and have been happy ever since. Well, I decided to give it a try. I've been going
here for about the past 6 months and I agree. She is a real talent. An artist. I am finally happy and satisfied after many
years of searching. Ann is someone who has great ideas and is always willing to change. I like this very much. I've also seen many other people walking out of this place looking great!

I've been having my head groomed and styled by Riah for the last 20 years. In that time, I've tried others, but have always returned. Ann's technical skill is only surpassed by her ability to look at a person and know what should be done. This is a rare and wonderful gift.

RIAH is the best, just go, you won't be disappointed!

She's cut my hair short, trimmed it when it's been long and is always spot on.
I can't recommend her highly enough!

I went to the Riah Salon after doing some heavy research through lifebooker . I wanted to find a new place that had gotten good reviews but where I could also get a good discount since I'm unemployed and I have to say, every review was outstanding. Ladies & Gentlemen: I've found an exceptional salon!

I've exhausted countless salons in NYC and am extremely picky about my hair b/c it's thick, wavy and a pain to maintain. I'm always trying to get a certain bob/shag haircut that has a lot of layers, is angled, thinned out and must be very evenly cut, but most of the hair stylists I've been to have messed up achieving this kind of cut for me, and I've always left these salons, (keep in mind we're talking high-end, expensive salons as well as just the average salons) very frustrated with the results.

Back to Riah... so I had Devon as my hair stylist, (not Ann who's the owner and was busy working on other clients) and I must say Devon was a wizard with the scissors, razor (for thinning out spots) and good conversationalist. She asked me important questions about how I usually style my hair and what styling products I use. This impressed me b/c she was cutting, drying, then cutting my hair dry too, (which is helpful in my case) b/c it's all about how it'll look the next day when I'm the one styling it, not when most stylists overly style your hair so that you can't really tell what it'll look like when you're left to do your own maintenance, and then you look in the mirror and see your style looks different than when you were at their mercy. In other words, she had a realistic approach to cutting/styling my hair and I liked that. And she was a really nice, down to earth and low-key person who really knew what she was doing with my hair.

I'm very happy with the cut, (even after styling it days later) and with a lifebooker discount, it was very reasonable, ($60.00) though I guess for being a funky, well-known (by some celebrities too) salon in the Soho area, their regular prices aren't over the top either.

I would definitely go back to Devon (or Ann) again and I look forward to it. I'll need a hair coloring too and I hear that they only use holistic and safe kinds of hair coloring products so that's good to know. They both made me feel very relaxed and welcome and I'd say it was the most unpretentious and mellow salon (for that area) I've ever been to.

I would've given my review 5 stars but I took one off for the space of the salon and to me it was the only downside... Folks, it's a really tiny salon which surprised me and I'm not sure how they maneuver themselves around, but they do with the 3 chairs that are in there. I understand the salon has been there for years so that's the way it is, but I bet If there were more space in there, you'd be waiting for your appt. amid a long line of customers. I might be giving away one of the best kept secrets of a good hair salon in NYC and if I praise them too much, they might end up having a long line of people wrapped around the block waiting to be clients of these two stylist gurus. Devon, you really rock... thanks again!

After a few days letting my color settle in, the orange has faded and it looks better though not exactly what I wanted. I can rest assured that a few more toners and it'll be the way I want it... and I can go back to Ann for highlights again within 6months or more and hope it works out !

These dear, talented craftspeople have only one item on their agenda: to make you look as good as possible. Given the level of their expertise, it's been a win-win situation for as long as I've been a faithful client (almost 10 years? No way!) My headline comes from the fact that I can be having the worst possible day when I show up at Riah; but by the time I leave, sanity and order have mysteriously been restored, in addition to a much better looking me.

I've been seeing Ann for about three years and have had consistently great experiences. Ann and Devon are friendly and helpful and most importantly do a great job with hair. I'm probably typical for most guys in that I don't give my hair a great deal of thought on a daily basis - but that is what Ann is there for, she makes me look good without having to think about it!

Riah is the best salon I've ever been to and Devon is just GREAT!!! I moved to NYC 6 months ago and was put off by the really expensive prices of haircuts at good salons. After tons of research, (I'm really picky about who touches my hair, bad experience), Riah had the best reviews. All of them were positive and now I know why. I'm not one to sign up for things to write reviews, but Devon did such an EXCELLENT job on my hair, I just had praise her on here. She listened to me and consulted with me before she even started. This is the best cut and color I've ever had and she taught me how to style it. I HIGHLY recommend Riah and Devon to anyone looking for a great salon experience!! I will definitely be going back!!!!!

I have never really been ever to control or manage my naturally curly, frizzy hair. Even when I thought I knew what was doing by bleaching and straightening it. Devon is a magician, she transformed my blond frizz back to its rich caramel golden color and gave me a cut that really flatters. I will NEVER buy another bottle of hair color. Devon taught me product, product, product, I love A G re-coil, details, and Xtramoist. Thank you Devon for my soft curls without frizz.

Every time I go to Riah I leave with a haircut that is both stylish and trendy without being too over the top. I'm the kind of person who impulsively cuts my hair and find that not only do I leave satisfied with the end result but like I've just left friends. The stylists not only know what they are doing but make great suggestions and give helpful tips to make the most of your new 'do'. The long and the short of it is Riah is fabulous.

What can I say about Ann that hasn't already been said?? Ann is the only one I trust to cut my hair and I am extremely picky! She just KNOWS hair... My hair is difficult to deal with, but Ann is always able to work her magic and make it look awesome. I'm not coloring my hair presently, but she helped me transitionfrom bleach-blonde back to my natural color, so I know she's great with color too. And on top of all this, Ann is a wonderful and empathetic person, and just great to be around. The salon itself is warm and cozy and feels familiar even if you've never been before. Good vibes at Riah, all around. Would recommend this salon to ANYONE!

I won't go anywhere else to have my haircut. Anne knows what she is doing, listens and I always have a good experience at the salon and with my cut afterwards. Plus the salon is located in a great area shopping in SoHo or out to dinner in the East Village.

Ann is great for color and cuts. Her opinions can always be trusted and she is always very current with trend and styling...never the same old thing. It's nice to be able to just relax in the chair and trust that you will walk out looking amazing.

I've been getting my hair cut at RIAH for years, since Ann was in the East Village and, along the way, have sent many friends and colleagues over too. Ann is an excellent hair stylist and colorist as well as being a great friend. An appointment with Ann not only means a fabulous new cut, but also a thoughtful, engaging conversation. RIAH is like an extension of my family - I wouldn't go anywhere else. Devon is a great addition to the family, too.

I used to hate getting my hair cut - it was always a traumatic experience
UNTIL I discovered Anne at Riah about 18 years ago
FYI my friends and I that would never dream of going to another stylist, call her the 'hair goddess'
I have also used her creative talents on many photo shoots - she's brilliant

It is always a relaxing experience getting a cut and color from Anne and Devon.
They are the best.

I love going to Riah. The atmosphere is chill, and very relaxing. Ann and Devon always make sure I am taken care of. I have been going to Riah for years, I love the service, the products they use (and that they do not shove down your throat like other place) and the great advices they give. They'd been there for my wedding, and did an amazing job!

I'm a fussy Brit journalist who for years struggled to find a decent colorist in NYC. And believe me, I tried: Sally Hershberger; John Barrett; Antonio Prieto, etc. Besides being treble the price, none of them come anywhere the skill level and completely satisfying experience of having Ann at Riah do your hair.
A friend recommended Riah after I had some disastrous highlights done for a story--I thought I was going to have to get my head shaved! Ann worked miracles: she salvaged my poor stressed-out locks and sent me out the door grinning with a head of glossy, natural-looking highlights. Now I won't go to anyone else.
I love the kitschy little salon, and as much as I love the personal attention I get from Ann, I'm more than happy when she can't squeeze me in and Devon gives me a wicked wash and blow-out!

I have been getting my hair cut by Ann since she was in the East Village. She's wonderful, fun and really pays attention to how my hair falls and grows. I?ve had strangers complement me on my hair several times (a little odd on the subway - but i guess some folks are desperate.) I don?t like to "do" my hair and I get a low maintenance style that still has a lot of style. For several years I got wonderful color, and this year I got a lot of help growing out my color too. It?s a really great salon, with personal attention, in a friendly, relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

I started going to Riah when it was in the East Village and when Ann left town for a while, tried a bunch of other salons (high and low end). None of them came close to being as understanding and creative as Ann. I was very unhappy with my hair for a looong time!! Then one day I was strolling in Nolita and came across Riah!!! I am so happy that Ann reopened the store. She has years of experience, but is also very "au courant." Her knowledge of color and the chemistry involved is amazing!! I could go on, but I won't. Thanks to Ann, my hair always looks great!!

I had a great experience at this solon and highly recommend it. Ann is extremely knowledgeable about the products she uses. She is extremely experienced and has a great sense how certain processes will effect different hair. She really listened to me, understood the results I was hoping for, and applied her expertise to achieve it. I don't think I'll let anyone else process my hair (straightening or color) again.

Ann and Devon, what can I say! I know! I can say that I don't know what I ever did without you in my life so many years. I walked past your salon every day and never came in because I figured you had to be too expensive, given your location. I had an accident and I fractured my wrist and needed to get my hairblown, finally I had to come in and make an appoinment because your salon was so conveinent, being located literally three doors down from my apartment. Well, thank God I did! The price is more than right! I have been coming for almost a year now, weekly wash and dry, color, cut, the works. Every week I leave looking great, my hair is so much more healthy looking and I am always satisfied with the work that Devon does for me. Finally I have someone who listens to what I want whether it's different color or just a shaping. My former hairstylists always told me they listened but they gave me the highlights they liked and took off more than I asked for every time. Thank you Devon, for listening to what I want and thank you for taking pride in your work. I love the fact that you are close by but I love your work and our stimulating conversations more. I feel right at home every week, so relaxed!
You two are innovative or traditional, seems you have the whole package. No wonder you are always busy!!!
Your neighbor and devoted client, Cecelia

I feel like I've been to every salon in New York City, always leaving unsatisfied. Who would think it would be this hard to find a good hairdresser in NYC? Then I came to Riah.... I was so happy when I left I just want everyone elso to know! A place where they actually LISTEN, therefore giving me the results I've been looking for. I came in with ok, dull hair. I left with shiny, beautiful highlights and a flattering cut that has lasts!

Before I discovered Riah seven years ago, I had been EVERYWHERE (you name it: John Barrett, Oscar Bond, Ouidad, Bumble & Bumble, ETC). They charged a fortune and didn't seem to take any interest in me OR my hair. (Seconds after I'd left their chairs hundreds of dollars poorer, I'm certain they couldn't haven't picked me out of a police line-up if their lives depended on it.)

Thankfully, a friend of mine recommended Ann, the salon owner/head stylist at Riah, and the rest is, er, hairstory. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Her haircuts are the most flattering I've ever gotten, and they actually grow out just as well, which is a rareity. And as for color, the formulas she uses are so much higher quality than the average stuff you find at salons ? the shades are really bright and rich and they last for ages without wrecking your hair. Plus, Ann is incredibly versatile ? she was equally amazing at giving me edgy-looking color when I went through a rebellious stage as she was at Bergdorf Blonde-esque highlights and everything in between. It's safe to say that at this point, I would happily pay any amount she chose to charge, but by some happy accident she also happens to be totally reasonable: $80 for cuts and $100 and up for color. Sold.

The atmosphere at Riah is very calming, too; no sterile waiting area or snotty receptionist. Just Ann and Devon, happily working away to great music, with priceless Nolita people-watching opportunities on offer courtesy of the salon's giant windows.

Recently, I started going to Ann for Brazilian hair straightening ($300), and there's no one else I'd trust with those chemicals on my hair. Unsurprisingly, the results have been amazing, and she's thrown herself into the process with the same skill and care she applies to her cut and color.

I can't say enough good things about this place ? run, don't walk, away from all those other overrated chop shops and I promise that you'll never look back.

I am so happy with Riah! Finally a great, attitude free salon in NYC that does wonderful work. Hands down the best haircut I have ever gotten, and good value as well. Would definitely recommend to anyone nervous about trusting a new stylist, everyone at Riah is extremely nice and patient and will work with you to get it just right.
