I've never been to School Products before but heard a lot about it. What a wonderful place! They have probably the best selection of luxurious yarns at amazing prices.
I bought Donegal cashmere at $20 a skein to make my husband a scarf and lace merino on cone (they have lots of yarns on cones by the way) which has enough yardage to make few lace projects. And it was only $26. Real steal!
The woman who owns the store was very helpful and she knows everything about her yarns and knitting. I also got a free pattern for double sided cable scarf.
It was very pleasant experience and I'm definitely gonna shop there again (you can never have enough yarn).

Pros: great prices, helpful staff

my favorite place to shop for yarn. Always great deals on cashmere yarns (huge selection of hand-dyes) and yarns on cones. Very helpful and professional staff (the owner, Berta Karapetyan, is the author of "Runway Knits" and if you ask she can even autograph your copy of the book; I bought mine there and she offered to sign it for me).
They also carry all colors of Karabella Aurora 8 - my favorite worsted merino.

I have never written a review of anything, anywhere on the internet and the worst retail experience of my life that I had at School Products yesterday inspires me to do so! As a textile designer I deal with many companies, direct from Italy, Japan, Germany, Peru and some remaining mills/dealers in the United States. I had heard of School Products and am always interested in exploring all available yarn on cones that I can find anywhere, so I went.
I was treated like absolute dirt by the owner, Shouting at me for doing nothing except spending money at her awful store. If people think this place is great, than they have either been living in New york city too long and expect to be treated dispassionately and inhumanely by people whose only goal is too rip you off and take you for everything you got.
I dearly hope that the way these people treat people
comes back at them full force. I see from previous reviews that I am not alone in my experience. One previous reviewer said this place is not for the faint of heart. I would recommend that if you actually have a heart, it would be better not to expose it to this terrible terrible place.
(The lowest score is 1 star and this place deserves not one!)

Pros: Italian Yarn

Cons: Nasty People, over priced, Bad Karma spot

I was unpleasantly surprised to find that the last ball of thread I needed to use consisted of broken thread. Not thinking much of it but finding it a bit strange (It's the first time I have come across broken thread in a ball of thread) I re-attached it and continued and to my utter dismay found that I could not continue because it was broken several times. Basically it was 12" pieces of thread rolled together in a ball and held together by a rubber band! Very disappointing.

I would give it no stars but this review form doesn't allow one to do that.

There are other places in the city to shop for thread/wool etc. where you don't feel cheated like Seaport Yarn downtown on Broadway and they are so very nice and extremely helpful.

I've been happily shopping at School Products for many years now. I think that you do need to know what type of yarn you are looking for rather than brand though. The owners started and founded the karabella line which has a good substitute for any other yarn out there. They use great quality fiber and spin/ply techniques for their yarns. There is a small selection of some other brands (koigu, brown sheep, etc), however other shops have better selection of those brands.

You come to school products for their fiber knowledge, and for something else that you cannot find anywhere else in the city. Leftover mill yarn. From years in the business the owner made contacts with italian sweater mills that make all the luxury fiber designer sweaters in today's high fashion. School products is able to get their hands on the leftovers. Some they leave on the cone and others are wound into skeins or center pull 'cakes.' It's the best deal in the city for some melange cashmere, or baby camel, or wool cashmere blends, cottons, etc. Some pretty exotic stuff at great prices (comparatively for the fiber). Some of the space dyed cashmere's are just gorgeous.

Beware though that because some of this yarn is meant for machines, they need to be washed so the fiber can 'bloom' and become as soft as you expect it to be.

I suppose that I've always had good experiences in this store because I know what to expect. I'm either getting a karabella yarn, open to a karabella substitute, or ready to be surprised by a great mill deal while petting some fabulous cashmere. While there's great pattern support for the karabella line, it's not the type of yarn shop where you're invited to pull up a chair while browsing in patterns chatting the while away. You go, buy great yarn, and leave.

The Brown Sheep yarn must be a hot button for this owner couple. I went to their store one evening right after work. The store was supposed to close at 6:30 pm and I arrived at 6:09. i went directly to the shelves that held the Brown Sheep yarn and when I couldn't see the color I was looking for I asked the owner. He looked at me nasty and said that they are not ordering this yarn anymore and pointed toward another (according to him) similar yarn. When I politely refused to buy that one, he suddendly shouted at me: "Ok, ok, then get what pleases you, I WANT TO GO HOME!!!'.
Then when I was just staring at him incredule he continued in an arrogant tone (maybe to justify his unexcusable behaviour) that his store is famous and people come here from Japan and allover the world.
What's wrong with this mean scary old man?
The store is not for the fainthearted.
Too bad, otherwise great selection, but looks like the fame went up to their head........
(Oh, and it DOES NOT deserve even one star........)

Cons: as I mentioned :"mean, mean ...."

School Products is big by NYC yarn store standards. Where they excel is in their high quality specialty yarns. Cashmeres, angoras, merinos, even camel. An the prices on that are generally good. They even usually have some bargain bin stuff where you can find gorgeous yarns very reasonably. On the more mundane (Lamb's Pride Worsted), I found the prices expensive and their needles are very overpriced. Unlike another reviewer I found the staff helpful if not overly friendly and as a male knitter I know a thing or two about rude yarn store employees.

Perhaps the previous reviewer did not understand the whole point of School Products: they are the only store to carry leftover *designer* yarns from the fashion district. This means you can knit with yarns from fashion houses that are not usually commercially available! School Products' stock changes constantly, but I have seen (and bought) the softest merino straight from Italy, as wsell as luscious angora. This store is a treasure trove!
However, if you want to buy run-of-the-mill yarn (ie Brown Sheep), scour the internet.

I have now had two unprovoked "run ins" with this store's owner. I will not return to this shop EVER,nor recommend it. I specifically went to School Products because of its vast array of Brown Sheep Yarn~no other reason. I asked the owner if the store carried or could order (in its next order) any dark blue Brown Sheep yarn. She proceeded to rant (literally)about how "we carry$40,000 worth of Brown Sheep and you can't find yarn.etc... Anyway, Brown Sheep doesn't carry dark blues."(ridiculous). She than proceeded to berate me for another 10 minutes.Luckily, only one other person was in the store. I couldn't believe such a low emphasis was put on customer care, especially since I was the only person shopping for at least 20 minutes. Clearly she didn't want or need my sale.
