I read the review posted here and while it is correct in many ways, one important fact was wrong, and the pros and cons would be changed if the reviewer knew more details. it is so important to check facts, although i know these reviews are just opinions. When my daughter studied at gateway there were seven teachers on staff. Paul Allan is not an acting teacher, he is the Producer of the Main Stage Professional Company. He is not involved with the school division at all. His sister, Robin Allan started the school after she moved back here from Hollywood, where she cast films and tv shows. You can read all this on their website. The only negative about the school that I heard from some of the parents, is that her classes, which are few, are hard to get into. You need to audition. Not everyone gets to take her classes. Some people come to the school to learn from her and have to wait. Why it is one of a kind, is that the teachers, at least when my daughter was there, are all from the city. they come out on weekends and they teach skills for film and television. You really can't find that in Suffolk, or in Nassau for that matter. There are musical theater classes too, but there is a lot of acting classes and scene study, things like that. These teachers are direct contacts with casting in New York, they had another casting director on staff for the last few years, I'm not sure she's there now. She cast the film The Wrestler. My daughter took with her for a session and she was great. Her name was Jessica. There was a little girl discovered in a class by her, who then did a movie that she cast. But the school doesn't promote itself that way. They don't advertise their success stories like the large commercial schools do. That's why we decided on them initially. They don't try to sell you a bill of goods that they are going to make your child a star. They are affordable, although nothing is very affordable these days. It was a very comfortable environment, and for my daughter, it was a second home, especially thru her high school years. It's a great place, the setting is great, the old buildings, the gardens, you feel a lot of history there. Robert Duvall was supposedly studying on the same barn stage fifty years ago. And whether your child is going to do this as a career or not, there are lasting benefits to studying the arts. I would recommend you writing or calling them and telling them as much as you can about your child, because they have levels of classes and can place her/him accordingly, if they are more advanced etc... you have to push it with them, because they are busy, the school is large and if you are not vocal, your child will just be placed with their age group. If you ask, they'll audition your child (and be ready for the truth.) There have been some copycat schools that have opened locally, even copying the names of the classes, we almost went to one, we thought it was related because their advertisement mentioned Gateway, but it was just that it was a former student of Gateway who was running it. But beware, there is only one Gateway.

Gateway Acting School is located in Long Island's only professional EQUITY theatre, The Gateway Playhouse. They use the old Barn Theatre, adjacent to the mainstage at Gateway. Classes range from children to adult, and cost in the vicinity of $200 for an 8-week session. The teachers are mainly Paul and Robin Allan, who own Gateway. There are some other teachers tossed in here and there.

This is a good acting school that covers a variety of topics. You can take all sorts of classes, from drama to comedy, from musical theatre to improvisation.

PROS: not too expensive, good location, wide variety of classes
CONS: not a good variety of teachers
