I moved to the Capital Region several years ago and once I tried a Vanilla Bean cake I knew this was the place that was going to make my wedding cake. I have had several cakes and desserts from there as well as eaten at their caf in Latham, NY with great customer service.
When the day came to order the cake I made my appointment and came in with pictures. They gave us a free piece of cake and were very nice. The next time we came in to place our order the wedding cake specialist was very nice and we again received a piece of free cake. We even received a phone call the week before the wedding to let us know that our cake would be ready for pick up from Latham between 7am and 8am Friday June 1st. My wedding was out of town (4 hours away) so it had to be ready at this time. When Matt arrived (now my husband) it was not ready and they new nothing about the order. They gave him the run around and wouldn??t even talk to me. I then tried to call them and the person working actually hung up on me after I said ??Hello, my name is Heather and I was wondering who I could speak to about my missing wedding cake? I could understand her hanging up if I was rude or something, but I was just asking what was going on. Meanwhile, they were making the cake in Troy and having it shipped over ASAP. They didn??t have it done until noon and they did an awful job. You could tell it was just thrown together. My husband also bought cookies for our reception and he left them on the table. When he went back to get them 15 min after he left they said they put them back because they didn??t know someone purchased them. The same waitress that was working and took his payment and had to remember him 15 min earlier said she couldn??t give them to him even though he had his receipt. I think she kept all 200 of them for herself or put them back on the shelf and kept the $50.00 for herself. Because of Vanilla Bean??s mix up my husband missed our wedding rehearsal and decorations didn??t get finished. (because he had them with him and didn??t have time before the wedding). After complaining I was told by the owner herself that I would get a full refund. She said it was her fault, but she was really nasty about it and chewed me out. After several weeks went by and I hadn??t received the refund I called back and spoke to a really nice person (the manager of Latham??s Vanilla Bean). After calling her back a couple of times I did get a full refund.
I know this review is probably pointless because they are already closed, however I wanted everyone to know why they closed. Today I found out that several cakes were purchased (five) for my husbands job and they made the cakes wrong all five times and had to give them free cakes. I think the business went under because of poor management, and horrible customer service. They made excellent cakes and I am 100% confident that if the owner new how to run a bakery it would still be here today.

I came from NH to Vanilla Bean because of their great reputation. They stressed their custom wedding cakes, and made a huge deal about my private cake design appointment with an award winning cake designer. At my cake design appointment, after waiting close to 2 hours, a waitress tossed a three ring binder with pictures ripped from wedding magazines and told me to pick out a cake. When I asked where the 'desinger' was she pointed to a woman who had been standing behind the counter talking on the phone the whole time were waiting (she also lit up a cigarrette at one point, and no I'm not kidding. A health inspector should shut them down). That should have been my warning to walk out but unfortunately I didn't.

The cake I ordered came smushed, and it collapsed on the trip to the reception even though Vanilla Bean told us they would package each layer seperate (they didn't) and that their cakes always traveled well. They refused to do anything to fix the cake. They gave us no discount, no apology, nothing. My mother ended up picking up pre-made cakes from their display cooler (and yes, Vanilla Bean charged her for the cakes) stacking them on top of each other and we dumped flowers all over the cakes so no one could see that they were 4 different pre-made cakes.

If I could give this bakery 0 stars I would.

This bakery bakes a variety of paistries. They have very unique cookies and cakes and other delicious pastries. They take custom orders and do wedding cakes as well. There food is excellent and looks great. They also have a restraunt attached, but the food is not as good as the bakery food. The staff is friendly and nice.

I ordered a cake for my daughter a few weeks before we were going to have a party. I gave my credit card number as well as my home and cell phone numbers over the phone when I placed the order. Unfortunately, when I had a relative go to pick up the cake, she was told that our card was declined and that they didn't make our cake. Noone ever called to inform us that there was a problem.
After our family party, I called our credit union because I was shocked that this could happen. I was informed that our card was fine and Vanilla Bean never tried to put the order through our account.
I called to speak with a manager and I was told that the worker who took the order has never made a mistake so I was wrong!!
I was absolulely shocked and hurt. I wanted to clear up the confusion and perhaps receive an apology and I was basically called a liar and told they did nothing wrong.
We used to buy all of the cakes we needed for family functions through Vanilla Bean (plus make a special trip just to pick up cookies and other desserts). Since this incident, I have stopped giving them my money and many friends and family have as well.

We have ordered several large custom cakes from this bakery and they always come out fantastic. My husband actually draws a diagram of what he wants and they turn it into a delicious piece of art. Everyone always raves on how delicious their cakes are.
They are able to handle any size orfer and have a large variety of goods availible.
