Yesterday I ordered the truffled mac and & 7 cheeses with chorizo and shrimp. It was amazing moist, creamy and cheese. The portion was so large it was enough to fill my self and friend. Also we order the blue point oyster on the half shell. They were sooo fresh you can taste the sea water in the half shell. The delivery was very fast and the guy was very friendly on the phone. This place rocks! I will be ordering from five spot soon.

I have ordered twice from Five Spot..the first time it was ok, but my chicken was a little under-cooked, and the mac n' cheese was dry. The second time it was not any better. All of the food seemed like it was made two days prior and sat under a heat lamp. The banana pudding was also old and artificial tasting. Don't waste your money or time.

I stay the hell away from the Five Spot! When it first opened up I was psyched. The only other place around was Ruthies and though okay, it wasnt all that great. I have eaten there on and off but after the last three times of undercooked BLOODY chicken thigh, hard crusty mac and cheese, sour bitter watery collard greens and a stale velvet cake...forget it..no more chance :o( There's an OUTSTANDING soul food restaurant on Atlantic, right off of Court that though out of the way is well worth it! Stay away from the Five Spot if your looking to fill that particular hankerin...

I know what Soul Food is supposed to taste like and sorry Five Spot, but you don't make the cut. How do you mess up french fries? You don't bring out a plate of brown twice-fried french fries. Don't they watch Kitchen Nightmares?

I agree about the too-sweet BBQ sauce, the fish was ok but a tad over cooked. The only bright spot are the drinks and general bar atmosphere. I'll go back for that, but get your food someplace else.

i loved the place. i went after work with a friend. we both loved the happy hour drinks, all drinks were $2 off until 7. the cocktail menu was interesting with a bunch of new mixtures i never would have thought of. try the hypnotini or the flavored martiini's. we just ordered appetizers, a sampler that had a mix of seafood and some calamari. bottom line the food was good. the staff was friendly and we felt like we made some new friends.

we've done more delivery here but if you are very hungry this is a great option. Soul food is the standout here. Love the greens which are perfectly seasoned. Fried chicken is devilishly good.

I just have to disagree with all the bad reviews. My sweetie and I just went for lunch. The staff was courteous and the food delicious. I had fried cattfish, candied yams and red beans & rice. All good. The catfish was a little spicy, just the way I like it. My bf had chopped north carolina chicken w/bbq sauce on the side, collards and red beans and rice. His chicken was NOT greasy and NOT dry. It was perfect, and the BBQ sauce was tasty. The cake slices were huge, but we didn't have any. The fried chicken looked good too. This is not some greasy diner food or high end tourist trap. Not sure what people are expecting, or if they just like writing bad reviews to make themselves feel important. This is delicious home cooked comfort food. I'm glad they're still in business!

I've eaten here over the last couple of years with mixed results. Some things were good, some things were not. And when I say some things were good, I mean they weren't bad. The Five Spot was never even close to the best soul food you could find; it was just "food." So I kept going back, because of it's later hours and convenience of proximity. But last night, they achieved a new low. Never mind that the place was chaotic when I got there, and they were understaffed. People were waiting around to either order their food, or pick it up. I understand what it's like to work understaffed in restaurants, so it didn't really bother me that after I got there 30 minutes from ordering, I was waiting another 20. The problem was that when I got home, there wasn't a single thing I ordered that I could choke down. The collards literally tasted like tar. Don't ask me how or why that's possible, but I remember my body instinctively drew the line after I put the collards in my mouth, and said to my mouth, "Don't swallow that." Okay then..Let's try the fried chicken. Seems simple enough... Oh man, they f**d that up too. I like it when my ribs fall off the bone; not when my fried chicken breading is falling off the meat. The meat tasted bad. And I was starving. How could I not eat this? Alright, lets try the mac and cheese....Wow. It tasted like it had been left out all day, and was tough. I needed a knife to get through it, and it was dry, tough, and rubbery. Stale. I feel kind of like I've been food-violated, and the only reason I'm not food-poisoned today is because I made a cold-cut sandwich for dinner instead. I'm all about locally, black-owned business. Especially in these big-box business Bloomberg days. So I hate to say "take away their food license," but "TAKE AWAY THEIR FOOD LICENSE!!" Who's palms are being greased in the food/beverage commission to let this place still operate??

Pros: i'm not sure that there is one.

Cons: horrible food.

.

The ambience is definitely something to be desired and the decor is down right ugly. The food is not hot and a glass of soda with your dinner will run you $5.00 per glass. My bill totaled $90 and half the bill was soda and gratuity. The service is horrible, but yet you are required to pay a 20% gratuity to the waitress who serves you in belly tops and too short shorts with names like Fire. Why is the consumer required to pay a 20% gratuity for awful service, but the Lord only ask for 10% and "he provides peace that transcends all understanding". My visit to the Five Spot was definitely a major disappointment especially for a black owned eatery. Malik you need to step your game up or you will lose out big time in the end.

This was my first time at the Five Spot Soul Food [takeout side not restaurant side]. I was desperate for some good barbeque, but realized immediately when I got to the Five Spot that it was more of a neighborhood soul food place, and definitely NOT a bbq place; a subtle but important distinction if you're looking for good bbq. I found the food decent and very basic soul food, but not great. The side dishes seemed underspiced and not very flavorful, but I was pleasantly surprised and happy that the collard greens were not too salty as is the case with most soul food places, but they could have had more flavor. The mac & cheese was a very basic soul food cafeteria variety with melted cheese on top; the smoked ribs were subtley tasty; very meaty and not fatty which was a blessing, but you only get a few (4) which seemed to be an exception to the other dishes; and the bbq sauce was the flavor savior for the whole meal. The portions are enormous (except the ribs), so this is a very good deal if you don't mind very basic neighborhood soul food. Apparently the neighbors love it because it seems to have steady take-out, delivery and pickup business with a few people in line most of the time, but there also isn't any competition within walking distance [as of this date] so that doesn't hurt the appeal either. We did not try any of the fried dishes, but the fried fish filets: snapper, catfish, etc, looked really good and maybe where the strengths are. Next time I will have to try one of those before I make my final personal evaluation, but I will try it again since it is so close to home. I would not recommend traveling to eat there. There are too many really solid places in other sections of Brooklyn and Manhattan that are much better. Hope this helps.

Pros: Enormous portions and very reasonable prices: entree platters $7, $8, $9

Cons: Food flavors are underwhelming; underseasoned

When we moved to the neighborhood we were excited when we saw this restaurant, smelled good, good music, etc. However the service is beyond slow, and the food is well - not that great. Don't ever get it delivered - everything will come completely soggy and gross. We gave it 1 more try thinking maybe they had a bad night - nope - again gross food and again soggy food on deliveries! It also smelled like urine last time we were there - pretty gross!!!

Go somewhere else to eat - and maybe if anything grab a drink and some music on your way home!

I MOVED TO BROOKLYN FROM THE SOUTH,AND WAS INITIALLY GLAD TO SEE A RESTAURANT NEARBY THAT SERVED,OR SO THEY SAY,SOUTHERN SOUL FOOD. I WAS HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED BY THE FOOD. THIS PLACE PUTS A SCOOP OF MASHED UP CANDIED YAMS INTO A PREBAKED SINGLE SERVING PIE CRUST AND CALLS IT SWEET POTATO PIE, SERVES POTATO SALAD WITH GREEN PEPPERS AND NO SEASONONG WHATSOEVER AND PROUDLY PROCLAIMS IT SOUTHERN! THE BANANA PUDDING THEY SERVE HAS NEVER SEEN AN OVEN,THE CRABCAKES ARE WAY OVER SALTED AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE VERY GREASY MAC AND CHEESE. TAKE IT FROM A SISTA FROM THE SOUTH,AND ASK ANY OTHER TRUE SOUTHERNER ABOUT THIS FOOD...THEY WILL ALL SAY THE SAME THING...I DON'T THINK SO!!!!! FROM WHAT I'VE TASTED HERE,I'M SORRY NATIVE NEW YORKERS,BUT TO GET A TASTE OF THE REAL THING,YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE A RIDE DOWN 95.

Cons: FOOD, FOOD, FOOD

Soul food is supposed to be heavily seasoned and have lots of flavor. THIS place missed the boat on BOTH those accounts. We tried twice (first attempt, sandy spinach, fried shrimp so curried that they were brown on the flesh - second attempt, roasted chicken that seemed microwaved, crabcake that was rubbery and mostly bread, horribly tasteless mac and cheese) and both times were absolutely disappointed. The sweet tea is the only redeeming factor and man cannot live on it alone...

This intimate, cozy, space draws a pretty cool crowd. Without question, it's our Clinton Hill haunt. Good live music, and occasional art show. Great place to just grab a beer and gab with friends, or have a lazy dinner. Fantastic mac & cheese. My one warning, watch out for the martinis. They're yummy, and huge...but *whump* ...the tag ain't pretty.

Boy: where to start? First of all, the 5 spot isn't in Bed-Stuy but Clinton Hill. Small difference, yes, but it really ought to be included in a Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Search. Secondly, it seems like Malik has almost given up on being this being restaurant and has finally realized that the way to make money with the place is to turn it into a night spot. 'Bout time. This neighborhood doesn't really have anything where you can go for a pint to watch the game and maybe catch a dj set.
Now it does. The service leaves plenty to be desired, but the place attracts a diverse local clientele for drinks and snacks. They get good djs, they've got a great selection of beers. Some of the drink menu is pricey, but there are enough bargains to appeal to the mizer in anybody. Just stay away from the food.

The Five Spot "Soul Sundays" is where it's at with its innovative entertainment. With a live fusion of Art, Hip-Hop, and comedy it seems impossible for one not to have an extremely memorable night. Live artists take the stage as they have one hour to create a masterpiece, while Dj's, breakdancers, and M.C.'s keep the vibe going. For anyone who enjoys art and urban music, this is the perfect environment. Not to mention the food, booze, and mood is just right.
