this place has horrible customer service... i left my gym bag there, called immediately and they refused to check for it. after a round of mediocre to bad drinks at expensive prices, i expected more. i literally will never go there again,

This is one of my go-to bars for happy hour or a low key early evening drink on the weekends. This place is conducive for settling back into the well-worn couch cushions and having a long conversation with a friend. The bartenders are friendly but table service in the back room can drag on busy nights. A good mix of West Village types.

Art Bar has an extensive food menu and yummy seasonal drinks. My favorite for winter is their gingerbread martini.

Pros: A working fireplace and broken in couches? Yes, please.

Cons: Table service can be slow.

I am not sure how to explain some of the negative reviews. The Bartender is wonderful and creative (try the Jolly Rancher), the service is fast and friendly. The food is a couple of steps above average bar food (try the popcorn shrimp and nachos grande). It is noisy and hard to talk but not impossible. The people are a very mixed lot from working class to students to ?. The music can be almost anything and usually is - but always excellent. The front is narrow and has tattered seat booths, while the back is larger. I have been going there for 10 years (work nearby) and enjoyed every visit. I have never noticed employee or patron to be snobbish or rude and I have lived in NYC since 1980. The bartender makes excellent cocktails (her own concoctions). It is usually decked out for holidays, very creative eye, esp. Halloween. I think the place is great and I always go back (like tonight). Enjoy.

Pros: Good Drinks, Atmosphere, Food, Service, People

Cons: I usually eat and drink too much - wait - is that a Con?

Manager (Robyn) - couldn't understand the concept of asking for a minimum quote to rent the back room for a la cart drinks. Some of my friends drink soda, some drink scotch...I didn't want to do open bar per person. This girl could not understand typical event planning basics! She kept talking me in circles about how a la cart with minimum is not any different than doing open bar per person. Then after I told her a dozen times that it would all be under one tab in the back (a la cart) she asked me if it would be under one tab. This girl seriously is a bar manager?! She also didn't understand how having my guarenteed reservation is different than having regular customers. Duh, I would have guarenteed them $XXXX.00 dollars for three hours of boozing under one credit card in advance. Would not want her working for me - she can't do simple math. The owner just lost business b/c of her idiocracy.

I'll tell you what! I always have a fun night at Art Bar... You cant be too sensitive, a cry baby, or snobby, If you are any of these things this bar just wont do...

I get a kick out of the people who work there!!! The bartender girls are fast, lovely, mix a mean cocktail, and are VERY SASSY!!!! So you better be able to take it ,and you better know how to tip right too, or watch out! Yowsa!!!! The Juke Box is good, the grub is above average for a bar! The atmosphere is warm and cozy...

Give this place a shot! If you're like me you will love it!

Art Bar is terrible. It's a shame, because it has potential, but the people who work there totally ruin it. I've never encountered a ruder bunch of servers and bartenders in my life, and this is New York. I'm surprised that the staff doesn't connect with the fact that they're working for tips, and that the management lets them get away with this. My friends and I left after our server made several rude comments about our group of 6 taking up too man chairs in her section (1 per person). WTF? Bottom line... don't waste your time. There are plenty of other better places in the area.

If you like incredibly rude service and overrated atmosphere, this is the place for you. We were not served for 20 minutes and when we requested drinks, the female bartender was completely rude and acted shocked about the concept of paying customers, wanting to enjoy themselves. My friend gave her a very generous tip in cash which she grabbed out of his hand and scoffed at him. I said, "Sorry, we just wanted to order and pay for our drinks." She acted like it was the biggest chore in the world even after she grabbed the money out of his hand. She then told another rude waitress to hold on while she "dealt" with these people. Later in the night, she refused to close our tab so I had to get the male bartender to give us our card to even get out of the worst staffed bar in the city. If Art Bar ever wants to survive, they need to replace the female bartendar in the main room. Never been treated so horribly in my life and no human being deserves to get such horrid service.

Cons: SERVICE. ATMOSPHERE. ATTITUDE.

Great appetizers especially the dumplings and egg rolls. Drinks are great. Very cozy and romantic especially in the back area. Service is good and prices are reasonable.

I went to this bar on a date and we sat in the cozy couch area in the back. We were having a nice time, until I saw visitors "a la Joe's Apartment" (if you get my drift) crawling on my date. I'll give you a clue, it starts with C and ends with OACH. To think we'd been sitting there for two hours with them crawling on us!
When we told the wait staff, they were rude and even suggested we still pay for our drinks. We weren't even around food - now THAT's dirty.
Hostile staff, dirty conditions, bad customer service - i don't know why anyone would go here.

I had been to Art Bar once last year and had an okay time, but was a little turned off by the overly crowded small front space (I was there on a weekend, so wasn't that surprised) But, in organizing a holiday happy hour with about 15 coworkers, I decided to give it another try and reserve the large, comfy back room. Everyone I dealt with on the phone to make the reservation was incredibly friendly and accomodating. Unfortunately, shortly before my group arrived, there was actually an electrical problem in the back room, and it was a bit smoky smelling. They resolved the problem quickly, the manager was genuinely apologetic, and they gave us the option to keep our party in the back room. But in the meantime (before we even had arrived) had called a nearby bar to reserve a smiliarly sized space for us if we chose to relocate. Then, they bought my whole party a round of drinks while we contemplated the situation! Though we did end up relocating to the other bar due to the smoky smell in the back, I couldn't believe how well they handled a situation that could have potentially been a nightmare. Robin, the manager on at the time, was fantastic-I have never been so accomodated at any bar! Thanks, Art Bar! My co-workers and I will all be back!

Pros: service

.

Hostile and physically aggressive staff make it a horrid place. Would never subject freinds from out of town to this place. A seasoned New Yorker might hold their own - but even they will find the service repellent. If you want to spend five minutes to an evening risking fights with hostile staff this is your bar. If you want a nice time -- avoid this bar. The physical nature of the agression shown by their staff is dangerous.

Whenever I have guests, I take them here. It can get pretty crowded on the weekend after 10, but it's easy to find a friendly spot before that. The backroom is extremely cozy and romantic as well. The drinks are so-so, but the appetizers are veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery delicious!

My friend and I went to Art Bar to check out their happy hour when I was looking for prospective birthday party venues. It was crowded, which was a good sign, so we struggled to find a place to sit. As I was walking around the back lounge a bus boy came up from behind me and began pushing me. I stepped aside to let him by so he could get into the kitchen, a bit put off by his behavior but whatever. As I continued looking around lounge the bus boy came out of the kitchen again running into me as I was trying to duck onto one of the low couches. This time I stood my ground, said "Excuse me!?" and moved behind the table to sit down. This is when things began to get scary. The bus boy stared me down in a very threatening way (I am a 5'2" woman) for about 10 seconds before disappearing back into the kitchen. At this point my friend was very distressed and said that perhaps we should leave if that man was making me feel uncomfortable. As she was speaking a waitress came up to me, and I asked to speak to the manager. She would not oblige, making an excuse that all the waitstaff act as managers, and then she told me that the bus boy had complained about ME! I again asked to speak to a manager but she refused. My friend and I left shortly, as you can imagine.
In all my time visiting New York bars I have never been treated so poorly and so disrespectfully- they wouldn't even let me talk to a manager.

I have never written a bad review for any bar, but my recent experience at Art Bar was ridiculous. We reserved an area in the back for a birthday party. When we arrived, there was no space reserved and the server couldn't care less.

We gathered at the bar and ordered a few drinks. The bartender told us we'd have to sit somewhere b/c we were taking up too much space. We sat down at a booth with our drinks and were instantly harassed by an irate waitress telling us we couldn't sit there because we hadn't ordered from her. As we were getting up from the booth, she went off on a rant... "this is how I make my living" It was insane.

I live in the neighborhood and I used to enjoy Art Bar. I don't know what happened, but I will never go again. I was embarrased to have subjected my friends to the most insanely bad service experience ever. Yes, it's a cheap bar, but it was anything but low key and friendly. Go somewhere else, ANYWHERE else.

The heading of this post is dead on! Only really really ridiculously good looking gentlemen would be smooth enough to bring a date to this charming bar with a hidden (sort of) ambience that is emblematic of what makes New York special. The effect is amplified exponentially if the guy goes to law school.

I had a small party in the crowded back room and I was amazed that our waitress maneged to not only give great service, but also undetstood the stress of keeping tables open for people coming in late, etc. A nice experience and I would definetely recommend art bar for small parties, or just a glass of wine on a cold Sunday afternoon.

worst service ever! it's a bar and it's casual and cheap, but the attitude of these people is unbelievable. it took almost an hour to get our drinks, and the waitress was so bitchy! we ordered plenty of beer and appetizers, and the bar wasnt crowded. no reason for this attitude! not worth it!

I was at this bar last night and I think I know what group the last reviewer refers to... They were holding four tables and ordering water. Would it break you to order at least a soda? This bar has some of the best prices in the city and a friendly cool staff. I am a regular at this bar and if you order drinks there is no problem, but if your not spending and people are WAITING for a table(as my friends and I were because you were holding space and not ordering) ... hang at home and don't ruin the great vibe. Other bars in the area will cost you more for sure. MY FAVORITE BAR! BEST STAFF. You can't get more for your buck in this city. People are amazing sometimes...

Why go here when there are dozens of bars within a couple blocks with better food, less tacky decor, and wait staff that understand the meaning of service? We reserved a section in the back room for a small party. Arriving early, when the bar was nearly empty, I ordered a beer---it took about half an hour for the beer to arrive. Then, as people were still settling in, the blond waitress repeatedly came over and told us we were not ordering enough drinks. She said they were very busy and we were taking up space---we reserved a large table and it was a Tuesday night! (and we ordered quite a few drinks. We were there about 45 minutes when she started accusing us of not spending enough money. What attitude!) I left early--and left money--and the waitress had the gall to chase after me screaming---she said she wanted to make sure I wasn't stiffing the bill. It's a bar, it's somewhat busy, and of course they want to maximize their profit, but this level of rudeness is really unacceptable in any situation. The positive reviews for the bar must be from staff.

I used to frequent this bar several years ago when I was in my early 20's'. Recently popped in where I found myself transported right out of the chic village and straight to tacky-land. The vibe is chill and the bartenders are cool and friendly. The place is packed with Jerseyfied clients drinking long Island Ice Tea's and Sea Breeze's. Good place to stop in before heading to the MP District as the drinks are strong and cheap despite the crowd. The word is many of the customers are regulars and many are looking to hook up and often do - the back room is full of secrets and missing wedding bands. On any night you can find the bar flies looking to meet a nice guy for the night! Good mixed drinks & decent beer selection.

If you want to have a party where you can actually talk to the people there, have affordable drinks, and eat some good food, Art Bar is the spot. Art Bar is a chill setting with a staff that works tirelessly to make for a seamless night. They were great about following up throughout the entire planning process and their staff, particularly Heather, was spectacular. They really work with you so that you can plan a party that's really special.

I am visiting the city this September, and I wanted to see if this place was still here. When I lived in the city I was here EVERY night. The people were great the drinks fantastic. On most nights whether it was slow or busy as soon as I walked in they started making my drink...Long Island Ice Tea (no tequila extra gin). How much better could the service be. To those who complained...try and order something in a bar or throw a tip out first when only ordering water!!! I can't wait to visit Art Bar again!

I was just checking the internet to make sure this place was still around. When I lived in NYC I used to go here a lot - GREAT atmosphere and a terrific place to hang out! Anybody complaining about the service isn't going there for the right reason. Never go to any bar to order a water and expect good service -period. Possibly the coolest atmosphere of any bar I've visited and located in a great area of town. Hope to be back soon!

I've been frequenting the Art Bar for years and have never had anything but a positive experience, which is why I wanted to write this. I was surprised to see a few negative service reviews as the staff has always been wonderfully welcoming, including remembering what I drink! One citysearch member complained that a staffer requested that people in is party order more than water. Isn't that a given if you're going out to a place of business? Oh well, if they don't come back that's just more of a chance for me and my friends to get a table on the busy weekend nights. Thanks Art Bar!

One citysearch member complained that a staffer requested that people in is party order more than water. Isn't that a given if you're going out to a place of business? Oh well, if they don't come back that's just more of a chance for me and my friends to get a table on the busy weekend nights. Thanks Art Bar!

Pros: Reasonable prices, Great atmosphere, Friendly staff

Cons: Weekends get crowded

.

The service at this place HORRIBLE (agree with other users of this opinion). Ten of us sat down for a birthday gathering, seven ordered drinks, and a couple just wanted water. The response from the unhappy, dumpy waitress: "It's okay if some of you don't order drinks, but this is a business, and we're *really* busy tonight, so you have to order *something*. My boss is here, okay? You can't just sit here. So I'll give you a few minutes to think about it." Really busy? Lie. This "boss"? Never appeared. A business? I hope not for much longer. The atmosphere doesn't begin to make up for the way the waitress ruined the beginning of a BIRTHDAY gathering for a friend. I have lived in New York for 21 years and have NEVER encountered such attitude. Art Bar, find some new employees or take the attitude out of New York.

Cons: RUDE service

the extremely rude, snotty, and flaky servers will ruin your night. The Art Bar seemed like the exact place we were looking for to host a friend's bday party...ample coaches in the backroom, conversations can take place without having to shout over really loud music, decent priced drinks (considering it's right by the Meatpacking District), and an INTERNET Jukebox! But imagine your drinks being served to you by a server who always seems pissed off?!? And one (not both) of the bartenders was a complete beotch! I would suggest going to Art Bar if you have a really, really small group, like 2 ppl. Otherwise, skip it. There are so many other bars that would welcome you and be more happy have you as there customer!

Whether you're looking to eat, just have a drink or relax in a chill lounge-type atmosphere, Art Bar is the place to be. The food is great, the music is good, and the lounge is relaxing. Cool place.

This is a great place to go if you want to have a great time without pretension. Great drinks, decent prices (for Manhattan), Internet jukebox, great back room. A nice place to go drink.

You can actually hear each other in the back room, so it's great for actually being able to talk (without screaming in to each other's ear). It has such a comfortable, laid back atmosphere, that anyone can fit in here. Over the years, I've taken several friends here and everytime, everyone has always raved at how much they enjoyed going there.

Pros: easy to talk, comfortable, easy going atmosphere

I went with an old friend to the Artbar one evening and with the drinks flowing the service so seemless...I could think of nothing else but how wonderful the man next to me was. The ambiance of the Artbar certainly also helped the evening along. People if you want that special person to fall in love with you...Artbar!

Pros: Couches, Fireplace

Cons: cranky service, high prices

.

The bar in the front room is a typical, run-of-the-mill neighborhood bar. The back room has a nice fireplace and lovely, velvet seating; however, it's more designed for lounging than dining. It's a little loud and not great for groups. The service at the bar was adequate but the service in the back room was terrible. It took the waitress 20 minutes to take our drink order, then another 20 to bring the drinks, and she got the order wrong. Thirty minutes went by before she came back to take our dinner order, but by that time we didn't want dinner.

My first experience with this bar was not a good one, I admit. But I found myself in there again recently for a friend's b-day party and either I had caught the bar on a bad day when I first visited, or management has made some (good) changes. The service was quick and friendly, the food was good and we really liked the music selection. I guess it depends which night you go, but I WOULD definitely recommend Art Bar now! I had a great time!

Pros: cheap food, comfortable, unpretentious

Cons: too loud

.

1. Music: I think my ears were bleeding when I left.
2. Service: There were cob webs forming on our table by the time the food arrived. The waitresses are extremely pretentious, unclassy, and rude.
3. Food: Bread was rubbery and painful to eat.
4. Drinks: Awful. Too much of the inactive stuff, not enough alcohol. Terrible.
5. Atmosphere: Darker than the NYC blackout.

Specialty drinks are absolutely delicious at this artsy lounge, but expect smaller drinks at higher prices. Service gets slow as the night progresses, but they always try their best. The back room is extremely cozy with conversation-striking decor, but if you can't handle running a tab wth gratuity included, stay in the front and order at the bar.

Pros: decor, yummy drinks, ambience

Cons: a bit pricy, gets crowded

Cozy right up next to strangers gathered together on the sofas and make new drinking buddies! That's what happens here at this very warm, inviting, fun, sweet, good time spot. Very cozy place to meet new friends and get happy together. Not to mention, a very good looking crowd. Don't go here if you like snobbery, it won't appeal to the elitists out there.

Pros: fun & friendly, comfortable, relaxed & crowded

Cons: slow service

The 'art' is not to my taste, and the crowded front bar isn't. However, the back bar, with its low lighting and comfortable seating, is rather enchanting. The food is quite good and very cheap as well. A place I've been coming back to for a few years now.

I have such a great time at the Art Bar. I was truly amazed at how fast my drink arrived! This place is great for happy hour, great for meeting with friends, just great overall. Not pretentious, just a good place to hang out.

It's going to be fall soon, and my favorite place to go is the Art Bar this time of the year. The bar menu is some of the better food in town, and the service is pretty personable.

One suggestion: they should be clearer about what entails happy hour, as not everyone reads the sign outside. Maybe a sign posted IN the bar would prevent those of us ordering ineligible drinks for Happy Hour.

I LOVE Art Bar. I've been in on all sorts of nights, and I have not had a bad experience there. I like their nachos, but more than anything, I love sitting at the bar as I am never bored by the (usually funny) antics of whomever is bartending that night. It's a very casual place, and relaxed, and I prefer places like that.

A few months ago, I had a bad experience with the service at Art Bar. Nonetheless, people have bad days and I figured I wouldn't hold it against the place. My friends wanted to go somewhere convenient in the neighborhood, so we went to Art Bar. We were hoping for a place to relax. What we got was slow service and an unfriendly bartender was unfriendly. Art Bar, I gave you a second chance and you blew it. Kiss a neighbor's business good-bye.

This bar has two distinct personalities, both only moderately appealing, and neither remotely artistic. The bar in the front gives way to a lounge in the back, both of which are packed most nights. The lounge is cozy, but very smoky, and service is hard to come by. However, the drinks are good and reasonably priced, as are the appetizers. But the art on the walls is invariably bad.

Come at the wrong moment--ie happy hour or prime time on a weekend--and you'll be daunted by this bar's narrow quarters and packed bar. But off-peak, like Sunday or weekday nights, Art Bar is a private, cozy place where you're guaranteed a seat. At those times, the food is passable-to-good and the service is friendly.

Service is not the best, and it gets packed after work. The very dark and cozy back room with working fireplace is nice in the winter ... Or if you aren't up to daylight for some reason.
