EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

This dry cleaners is quite a show pony up front; fancy packaging, a slick front counter area, etc. Quite a calculated marketing effort to define itself as 'a cut above.' My experience suggests their factory is little more than "above average" in quality, and that customer service can be abrupt. At 10 times the price of a "normal" dry cleaner.

I am guessing that if you are an elite Hallak Upper East Side customer, dropping $15,000/year or more into its cash register, well then you are going to get the red-carpet treatment at the smallest whimper of dissatisfaction. Whatever it takes to make things right. But if you aren't (or they don't read you as potentially becoming) one of those customers, well your work & business is really nothing special to them, no matter what you are willing to pay.

THE DETAILS:

I had several silk ties with eight food stains which were not removed by processing and re-processing at my usual dry cleaners. It provoked me to try to source a top-drawer dry cleaners for top-drawer rework, now and in the future. The online evidence indicated that Hallak would be an excellent candidate.

I emailed two managers (as listed on the Hallak website) to pre-inquire. After a full week, there was no response. I faxed the email in and I received a phone call from (let's say) "Betty," the same day. After discussion, the work was put directly in Betty's care. Price for correct work wasn't an issue, so I didn't ask.

Three weeks passed, then Betty called, apologizing that my items were misplaced under other laundry. So much for Betty's direct care. No problem said I, I was not in a rush. Two more weeks passed and the items were ready. The items as returned still had four of eight stains remaining. That's 50-50, just pot luck. No "sorry" tag/note. Oh, but the items were returned in really, really fancy packaging. I was charged 9.6 times what the same dry cleaning would have cost at my regular dry cleaner. I didn't mind that price at all, as I live fairly comfortably. I minded the work was incorrect.

I politely advised Betty I would understand perfectly if the stains couldn't be removed, but given no notice, I wasn't sure if that was the case. Betty offered free rework, which I accepted. I was told by Betty that she was handing off these items to her manager (who was never named) for his personal attention. In hindsight, this was Betty merely ridding herself of the matter going forward.

Three weeks later I had the items back in hand. Of the four stains needing rework, two were gone, one was greatly diminished, the other remained unchanged. Again no 'sorry' note. Perhaps Hallak Cleaners does not want to "go on the record" that they cannot remove a stain. Perhaps my work just didn't matter too much. The attached tickets had instructions stating that the items should be pre-spotted. At this level of service, wouldn't EVERY item be examined for pre-spotting? So perhaps this is just an ordinary cleaners after all !

I called Betty, merely to advise her that I had the rework back (by that point, I wasn't expecting any better effort from Hallak). She curtly advised me that she was no longer involved in the matter given she'd been promoted (as if that should relieve her from closing up her outstanding customer business). Betty then referred me to another associate, (let's say) Louise. I left a message for Louise saying (1) Betty had referred me to her (2) that I had received my items and (3) giving her the basic background information. I made no mention of the remaining stains or any other concerns. No acknowledgment/response from Louise. I have to wonder if Louise isn't really an imaginary employee onto which unwanted customers are summarily dumped.

CONCLUSIONS:

My interpretation of my experience with Hallak is that it sees itself as having two kinds of customers, as described above. First are well-heeled, big-wallet, four-times-a-week customers - who get fawning white glove service.

Then there are the stray-dog customers such as I, who Hallak will only ever be serviced a few times, who wander in with a few items in need of special care, due to Hallak's (carefully crafted) top-tier image. And those customers will get second-tier service at first-tier prices, since they are not any significant percentage of Hallak's day-to-day cash flow. In fact, they may be viewed as interruption or bother.

And those customers are going to experience some subtle but rude snobbery along the way. I suppose I just didn't realize how much more important to this world Betty's time is. Apparently much more than mine.

RECOMMENDATION:

I wouldn't travel uptown/crosstown to patronize Hallak. Based on my experience, unless you're 'a neighborhood regular,' you get just-better-than-average product, lukewarm customer service, ten times the bill ... and really, really fancy packaging.

I recently brought to Hallak an Ostrich bag that was fairly new however, I made a very big mistake and placed it next to me on the floor in a busy restaurant bar and did not realize there was food with an oil base that had fallen in that area (my luck!) To my horror, the stain was the size of a baseball and figured my very expensive designer bad was ruined. I went to the internet and did a search of who was the best and yes, their name came up. I read all reviews (mostly wonderful ones) and yes even the negative ones on this site ,yet I decided to try them. At first I was surprised with the price of spot cleaning, but since I thought the bag was totally ruined, and it was very expensive, that if they could save it, that price was definitely worth it. Well I have received my bag back a week later, and they have certainly "shocked" me as there is no trace of a stain left. I can't tell you how happy I am and would definitely recommend them, and I WILL BE BACK FOR ANY PROFESSIONAL SERVICE THAT IS NEEDED. Trust me....I felt there was no way that stain could be removed and they DID IT! Ginny

These guys are really quite bad and unprofessional. Not sure why anyone would pay a premium to receive bad dry cleaning services. If you have nice suits they are certainly not your guys. I have had 2 separate experiences with them for dry cleaning my suits. The first time they just could not send them back without creases or without getting out the most basic stains. After 3 frustrating attempts I spoke to John Hallak who assured me he would look into it personally and that I should not let this experience affect my opinion of them. He took care of it. So I sent them another suit a of couple months later. This time it came back clean and well ironed but with a long snag along the fabric on the sleeve. They picked it up to have it fixed and I had to follow up with them for 2 months to try and get it back. I called John again and this time he told me that perhaps I should not send them anymore clothes. This guy should teach a course in customer service!! I finally get it back and it was repaired but they also happened to charge my credit card $150 for it. Probably the only cleaner that charges its customers to fix damages made by the cleaner. So of course I had to call them back to reverse the charges.

This place is over hyped and just not worth your time or money.

SHAME on HALLAK! (1232 2nd Ave.) One of the worst experiences I've ever had with a dry cleaner anywhere! First, they advised my wife and I that they would examine our three garments to determine if they could be cleaned and then give us an estimate BEFORE proceeding so that we could decide if we wanted them cleaned.

Ten days later, one of the managers (Mark) called and said my wife's two garments had already been cleaned and cost $108. By phone, my wife and I discussed with Mark the fact that we were NOT called and would never have agreed to such a high cleaning price for her two garments. To make up for this error, Mark offered not to charge anything for her two "cleaned" garments and told me that my jacket cleaning would cost $75 if they were successful, $0 if not. I told him that I agree to those terms and that he should proceed.

Flash forward a week, and I received a call that the garments were ready to be returned. "Was my jacket successfully cleaned?," I asked. "I don't know," the Hallak employee responded. When the three garments were returned, we could see that ... my wife's garments (which at first Mark tried to charge us $108 for without approval) were NOT cleaned and clearly NO attempt to clean them had been made ... and my jacket was returned as I had sent it with a note saying I did not give approval to proceed with the cleaning!!! I called back and had another long discussion with another worker at the store, and she said they would pick up my jacket again tomorrow afternoon to proceed with the cleaning this time ($75 if successful, $0 if not). The pickup guy came hours earlier than the arrival time-range they gave me and of course the jacket was not picked up.

So, another call to yet another manager, Leah. This time the jacket was picked up. Everything was again clearly discussed regarding the cleaning of my jacket, and I reviewed with Leah the conversation and agreement that Mark had offered me, and to which I agreed ($75 if successful, $0 if not). I even attached a written note (to the hanger on which the jacket hung) giving my approval for the agreement that I had with Mark and Leah.

Finally, I thought, the confusion was over. But unbelievably, after yet another week I received a phone call from Rachel who said I had "outstanding bills." Incredulous, I called and learned that they were now trying to charge me for my wife's garments that were NOT EVEN TOUCHED let alone dry cleaned, and that they were trying to charge me for my jacket which they now admitted was not successfully cleaned, and which by THEIR offer should have cost me nothing.

So, for attempting to scam, double-deal, and bait-and-switch your customers .... HALLAK CLEANERS gets the SHYSTER OF THE YEAR AWARD. Beware ... Avoid at all costs ... and if for some reason you feel you must use them, get everything in writing, signed, and dated. NEGATIVE stars really.

(and if by yet another bizarre maneuver, someone from Hallak has the chutzpah to contest the accuracy of the above, don't believe it for a second.)

Pros: none

Cons: bait-&-switch, DIShonest, charged for garments not cleaned

If you don't bring your wedding dress to Hallak, it will for sure will be ruined!
I had a problem with a bustle they created for me, but they fixed it no charge! YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP IF SOMETHING IS WRONG! They don't have ESP and cannot tell if something is wrong with what they did for you. I was reading the other review about them and how she said they were horrible, I bet she never called them cause I bet they would have done something for her for free!
My friend had her dress done by the corner cleaner and it yellowed in less then a year because of the plastic window or something. Hallak took it in, fixed it up, and now my friend and I are still customers for our better clothing.
These guys are the best at what they do and I recommend them to everyone everywhere!

Pros: Polite and caring staff.

Cons: A litle pricy for my husband's Macy's shirts.

Hallak, "bridal experts" made my bridal tailoring experience a nightmare. They lost my dress, then recovered it, and then created a bustle that BROKE as soon as I got dressed on my wedding day. It couldn't be repaired; one of my friends had to sew my train to the back of my dress during the toasts. I highly recommend going elsewhere, Hallak is horrible!!!

Pros: nice changing area

Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE- they are incredibly unreliable

A couple of years ago I had to take my prom dress to be fixed quickly because another dry cleaner did quite a bit of damage. Luckily these cleaners did a wonderful job at fixing a beautiful design on a delicate fabric in a very efficient manner (at a great cost also).

I had a dress in desperate need of emergency cleaning, a nasty wine accident red the worst kind. I also had a blouse in need of alterations and the crew at Hallak were able to rectify both situations. Everything was done quickly and in a friendly, business like manner.
