Frank Stella is, without question, my favorite mens' shop in New York City. When I go in I hold my hand up next to my eyes so I can't see anything except what I came there to find. Doing so is too dangerous because every shelf has something I want to buy. What impresses me most is how the buyers for the store can select items in all facets of a man's wardrobe which are superb in terms of style, design, construction, colors, and distinction. They have been doing it season by season for years. Their ties are consistently better looking and more interesting than any other store that I have visited in NYC. Sweaters, dress shirts, polo shirts, slacks, sports coats: All outstanding. They also seem to have things on sale a lot which I assume are the overages from the season. You could fill your closet with them.

I discovered Frank Stella Clothier's Columbus Avenue store about four years ago when my wife came up from Carrboro, NC for the gift show at the Javits in August and I tagged along to visit relatives in New Jersey and friends in Woodstock. It was at Frank Stella that I found my first Robert Graham shirt, and was floored by the workmanship, the attention to detail, and the terrific sense of imaginative possibility about what a great shirt can be. Since then I've bought a dozen of his shirts, along with a great summer weight poplin suit, several neckties, some great 3/4 length clam diggers and a few other items. It's always a treat to shop there. Staff is courteous and helpful. When I was forced to drive up to JFK in the dead of night because of a canceled flight from RDU as the first leg of a trip to France, I rewarded my marathon efforts by driving into Manhattan upon my return to the states two Sundays later, expressly to shop at their 3rd Avenue store--a disastrous traffic decision, as the U.S. Tennis Open was wrapping up in Flushing, there was street party goin' on on 3rd Avenue and the Jints were playing the Jets that night in the Meadowlands, but at least I got two incredible Robert Graham shirts, a Turrau shirt and a Bugatchi Uomo for my suffering. Highly recommended!
