I have to say I read all the negative reviews and was not thrilled but since I didnt make the arrangements there wasnt much I could do. Everything negative about this place is 100% true. This place was a nightmare and anyone who thinks its NOT, obviously are low class people with no standards. The place was a zoo and it smelled like one as well they had kids and an actual dog in the funeral home running around and the employees never said anything. The bathroom was discusting and the toilet didnt work right. Everything that could go wrong did at this place and the owners sister couldnt care less and never apologized about anything. Our flowers were removed by an employee that DIDNT even speak ENGLISH! When we questioned them they claimed flowers were missing so they took ours because they thought we had them accidentally. The flowers clearly had our families name on them. The casket should have been closed well it WASNT, they were to provide an easel that didnt happen. They said that they only had ONE easel and that they would try to get us one, they NEVER came back with one. Really one easel OMG. THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE TO BE CRAZY OR LOW CLASS TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS HERE.....

I'm writing this review, because after I read all these other reviews knowing I was attending a funeral for my sister I was dreading the event. All in all everything went well. I can honestly say there were not any problems.

My nieces arrived late the day we were to buried my sister and the personnel waited patiently for them to arrive, even though they had to ready the room for another viewing.

All too often people only post negative reviews, but I felt it was important to say everything went smoothly for my family. Thank you!

Cons: really don't have anything negative

It is truly a business. They could not care any less for your loss. My aunt passed away, and since she lived close to the Ortiz Funeral home on Southern Blvd, I figured it would easier for the family to pay there last respects to her there. I was informed upfront, They only take cash, certified check or money order. No credit card. The cost had to be paid prior to any viewing. This was all done as they requested. We asked for a closed casket, my Aunts wishes, when her young daughters arrived, for the viewing, the casket was open. OUTRAGED!!!!! My sister, who was there not even an hour prior to the begining of the viewing informed them repeatedly, that it was a closed casket viewing, they still left the casket open. The arraigments witht the cemetary, had not been finalized, because no one in the Ortiz office informed the secretary to call the cemetary to inquire. But they made sure to collect the money upfront. The sympathy cards, I had to go and inquire for them because they never put them out. The death certificates, had to be requested multiple times, after paying for them, but became available two days later. Im scared to even consider that fact that my Aunt wanted to be cremated and what I'm getting back as her ashes. Do yourselves a favor and your loved ones, turn and walk away from the Ortiz Funeral Home. Don't put your loved ones in there hands for there final resting needs.

I wouldn't recommend this funeral home to my WORST enemy! Aside from their rude staff and drivers, R.G. Ortiz Funeral Home is operated more like a cut-throat business than a compassionate company dealing with grieving relatives.
Firstly, I was not given an itemization of funeral services and merchandise selected UNTIL I HAD ALREADY PAID the for the said services; therefore had I no way of disputing the incurred amount. (i.e. Flowers/prayer cards originally claimed to have been included in the price of BASIC arrangements were later added in as 'additional merchandise')
Aside from this, the Funeral Home booked Funeral Services at the church(In the Lower East Side of Manhattan) at 11:00am to hastily transport my AUNT's body for burial at 12:00pm( Bronx) and left almost NO TIME for travel consideration.
This disappointment of course, was COMPOUNDED when the LIVERY driver LEFT my GRIEVING family members BEHIND at the mass to RUSH the deceased to the CEMETERY (which closed at ::SURPRISE:: 12:00pm) for burial.

THEY DID NOT PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION (WHICH I PAID FOR!!!!)

I called the main office to bring it to their attention immediately- instead of trying to AMELIORATE the situation- and apologize for the driver's blatant inconsideration for MY GRIEVING FAMILY- she RUDELY said that there was nothing that she could do.
I suggested the secretary call the driver in order to inform him that he ABANDONED the family and return to pick them up. She claimed that the livery drivers did not OWN cell phones...!
Furthermore-- after all the hurried mess that BECAME my aunt's burial on account of R.G. Ortiz's Funeral Services; I find that THEY ERRONEOUSLY OMITTED HER SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER on her DEATH CERTIFICATE!
I'm STILL trying to correct this ERROR; I had to submit applications and notarize a NUMBER of papers in addition to incurring MORE FEES!!

As a matter of fact, I am STILL awaiting a formal letter from the funeral home admitting this omission (REQUIRED BY THEM TO CORRECT A DEATH CERTIFICATE)

All of this in MINIMAL in comparison to the STRAIN, GRIEF, STRESS and CONFUSION that my family had to endure!!!!!

SAVE YOURSELF THE AGONY and LOOK ELSEWHERE for your funeral services!

the plans for my mother funeral was to have an open casket so the family could see her one last time ...instead they made my mother look freakish .who ever took care of her...did a terrible job , first of all my mother skin tone was very dark , her face was overly puffy to a point she was almost unrecognizable and they chopped off most of her hair...a few family members seen her face and couldnt bare to keep the casket open for the other family members to see the horrible job ortiz funeral home did on her face.....would love to had seen her at her funeral but i rather keep the memory of who she really looks like instead...i think the ortiz funeral home should be investigated...people pay money to have their loved ones to have a decent funeral but instead they get ripped off by unprofessionals who dont care about the family or their loved ones.

My friend made arrangements for her husband's funeral over the phone from Texas. She asked and paid for a good quality casket. Instead they put him in a casket that looked as though it was sitting in their showroom for years. At the cemetary right before burial the casket would not seal. When Ortiz was called they gave her major attitude over the phone and told her she was supposed to have checked it before purchasing it...... Helloooo.. she ordered over the phone from Texas! The owner from Ortiz finally came to the cemetary with major attitude towards the family. Not once did he apologize to the family for what was happening. While we waited in the cemetary the staff there told us that Ortiz funeral home has done this many times before to other families. They sale damaged caskets. Also they have even mixed up paper work and switched bodies....After standing in the cemetary for almost two hours, her husband was finally put in a nice new casket and put to rest! Do not... I repeat Do not give these people your money! If you want your loved one to be sent off the right way go somewhere else.

I just want people to know that this funeral home was the worst, I have ever done business with. They say they accomodate you needs, but in all reality they lie. It's ALL about the money. I guess you need to be famous with money for them to give your love one a decent viewing. My family member was place here and the way she was place and arranged in the casket was horrible, when I went to the office, the man said that was the best way they could arrange her. I will never go back to them or recommended anyone. Worst expericence my family and I went through.

Sign,
Mourning the lost of a loved one.
