Great food (tried both the pizza and pasta) at a very reasonable price. Good ambience, helped by the friendly owner and efficient staff. A great little UWS spot that is a real gem.
Only odd thing that happened was that I accidently left

This is my first review and it had to take something extraordinary for me to go to the trouble. And this restaurant is just that - extraordinary! Our waiter was charming, funny and an amateur magician. Our food was spectacular! From the artichoke salade starter to the ricotta spinach raviolis and pizza! Perfect. And even with an excellent bottle of Chianti - still fit in a budget in line with these economic times. 5 stars all around!

After reading the reviews I am glad that our group of 6 came in for a not so busy brunch. But then we don't linger anyway. However, the service was shockingly bad. The waiters were outwardly rude and insulting. They didn't have wine, and were out 3 of of the 4 beers they had - this fact was basically spat at us through gritted teeth. When we asked if we could BYOB, he sat "no" and left our table.
Food was surprisingly tasty. We ordered the pizza with mozzarella and tomatoes and it was really good. However, avoid the anchovy pizza - too much salt and tasted old. The pastas were all good and we all enjoyed our meal. The waiter forgot to bring utensils for one of the entrees, and after we asked him, we ended up waiting 5 minutes until he threw it at our table. Simply appalling!

Went with four friends so we tried a bunch of things and everything was top notch. Mozzarella, artichoke salad, ravioli, pizzas. Wow. Great food at amazing prices. The only drawback was the tight space and the fact that it's cold when the door opens, yet hot when it doesn't from the stove. No biggie, it's NYC. I would be back.

Restaurant has good food and prices are very reaonable.

Owner clearly take great pride in the offering and enjoys interaction with customers (or at least some customers)

The space is tiny and the owner has a big personality aod overall the service is sort of like Barney Greengrass meets Italy as some the charm could be wisecracking waiters and owner who serve and kibbutz amidst the clatter.

I really can not say if 70% of the guests love the guy or 90% or 10% but he defintely rubs me the wrong way as do many on his team.

He tried very hard to be charming and certainly believes himself to be but I found him just annoying and arrogant and while it seems strange to speak as much about the owner of a place as I have this place is imbued with him.

So give it a try and maybe you will like it/him but just do not be taken aback if they rush you out of there when it gets crowded or chide you for not having listened better to their specials the first time around etc.

More like eating over at someones house who is a great cook but if not someone you like spending time with then probably not a good fit

Being new to New York, we were looking for a small neighborhood restaurant that the locals love. The reviews seemed to be either outstanding or awful, with few ratings in between. We were prepared for either, but were pleased to receive outstanding service and great food.
Our server, Carlo, was attentive and friendly. Carmine, the owner/manager came over three times to check on us.
The meals were very tasty, rich but not overpowering.
We'll be back.

i LOVE celeste. it's such a unique place; the food is wonderful and i still can't believe the prices - the wine list is really quite good (splurging for the wines on the last page is always worth it - Carmine knows his stuff) and the place has so much personality! Service can be rushed for some - but if you are nice to the staff, they are nice to you - and by the way, Carmine (the owner) is such a great character, I trust his taste more than most. Order the cheese plate (which can come in sizes from a few cheeses to 40 cheeses, all of which he smuggled in his suitcase back from Italy) and let him explain to you how every cheese is made - he even makes the condimenti from scratch for each cheese. and go on Mondays to order the special Robiola/truffle pizza - it's amazing. if not on a monday, the homemade pastas like the ravioli are also incredible. if you don't like lots of people, as always, avoid going at rush hours on weekends. it's that easy.

I dined here about a week ago with a party of four. It's a small neighborhood place that requires your whole party to be present before being seated AND accepts cash only. My pasta was fresh and tasty, the wine was very nice, and the homemade ricotta gelato was amazing! Don't expect too much in terms of service, it's a bit slow in the beginning and hurried at the end. It also might help to dine with a regular.

This used to be a charming stand-out. I have lived on the UWS for years and it was worth waiting for. No longer the case. Tonight 1) we sat at our table for at least 15 minutes totally ignored, without menus or any contact with our waiter..finally asked for the menus and he ran off again.....2) waited forever for COLD underdone pasta and red sauce that tasted like the can..3) not even offered parmesan cheese, etc. Just plain bad food. Overheard the owner ONCE AGAIN telling story "jI ust got back from Italy with the cheese in my suitcase" ...is italian cheese that hard to find in NYC? Do we want cheese that was in a suitcase? Stop lying about cheese and get your #### back into the kitchen. NOT WORTH IT - Bad food - Lazy Service...

Easily the worst service of my life. Food is passable but if I wanted fast food I would have gone to Sbarros.

Once they have your cash (oh and don't expect to get any change back), you will find yourself unceremoniously told to leave the place by the owner. And this, after ordering multiple entrees and a bottle of wine and dessert.

There are way to many options in New York to put up with this; I hope they go out of business.

This resturant came highly recommended as a great place for delicious Italian food. While quarters are tight we were able to be seated immediately as there was an opening for 2. The meal and wine were really good. But not good enough to be asked by not only the server but also the owner to leave before we had finished our dessert and wine. WOW!!! They were in such a rush to get us out (only having been there a little over an hour) it left a bad taste in our mouth.

Very unfortunate as the meal was really good. We will let all our friends know this is NOT a place that touts itself as a friendly neighborhood restuaruant.

And....by they way...be sure to bring cash only as that's all they accept.

We only hope you are treated better. The owner must have so much business he doesn't want repeat customers!

This restaurant has great food for cheap prices. It is true that the service is rushed and the place is crowded (it is very small) so I wouldn't recommend the restaurant for a romantic date or a first date. Yet, I don't understand people who get annoyed with the rushed service. The place is small with a constant waiting line, so it's expected that once you are finished your meal, then you move along (it is also curteous to other diners who are also waiting to be seated). I was rushed out of the restaurant while dining there last night, but it was expected. But I can overlook that flaw. For great food at a dirt-cheap price, it's a wonderful deal.

the food is good & fresh, the place has a homemade feel and a good wine list. service is good and the owner is usually there to tell stories of how he hand carries cheeses in from italy. seating is tight, as is the rest of manhattan. drink lots of good red wine and be merry... at least thats how i've always left the place.

Celeste has been my favorite restaurant for years. I've been there many more times than I could possibly remember. However, after what happened to me there several weeks ago, I'll never set foot inside again. I brought a date to the restaurant -- I had raved to him ahead of time about what a fantastic place it was. Dinner was fine. But things went wrong towards the end of the meal. First, the server dropped off the check at the same time as he served dessert. I sensed that they were going to try to rush us out, so I purposely held off on paying the bill for a few minutes. As we were finishing dessert and our bottle of wine, our server started hovering over the table, grabbing whatever utensils or dishes he could the moment we finished. Finally, I guess he got sick of waiting. He blurted out: "Please! There are people waiting outside!" I was mortified. We had each just had a three-course meal AND shared a bottle of wine, and yet that wasn't enough for them to let us sit and chat for five minutes after dessert?? My date and I hurried out, and I decided that I'm going to take my business elsewhere from now on. Gennaro, just up the street, is my new destination of choice for great Italian on the Upper West Side.

i love to eat out and can appreciate fine food. celeste is one of those gems that offer affordable food that really tastes wonderful. i read all of the previous reviews and was prepared for a long wait, pushy waiters, and ordering my dessert early, but to my surprise these people were dead wrong! LOL

I had an excellent time at Celeste. I was there last night at 9:30pm with a group of 5 ladies and the wait was about 10 minutes. while we waited outside, the owner/manager chatted us up and was so charming. he spoke about the smuggling of the cheese. he's darling. once inside, the waiters were efficient, attentive, and friendly, the food came out quickly and melted in my mouth. I can't understand why anyone would want to give Celeste a bad review.

Yes, it is a small nook of a restaurant and if the manager asked me politely to leave once my food was done, i wouldn't have a problem with that. if you want to linger over food and wine, then go to a more upscale and higher priced venue! :)

i ordered the spinach and ravioli (perfect portion, wonderful sauce and freshly made), my friends had the pasta Mo Mo (the mozzarella is not melted - fyi), and calamari, and the margherita pizza. all of us enjoyed our meals and one even wiped the plate clean with a piece of bread. LOL

my cousin who was dining with my group has traveled to Italy and did say that the bustling Celeste restaurant didn't remind her of any of the trattorias she visited while there, but who cares? we're in NYC and for a great bite to eat, good prices, just enjoy it for what it is. a nice small restaurant to enjoy a nice meal. i highly recommend it and as i write, i'm thinking i want to go back right now for their brunch!!

our total bill for 5 people came to about $70, we didn't have wine just sodas because we already had wine at the Make pottery place right next door. we'll be coming back to Celeste!!

The manager of the restaurant came to ask us what we wanted to order, and because my girlfriend is a vegetarian, we had requested a certain dish without meat in it. He scoffed at us, denied our request, and walked away to the next table without taking our order. We waited for fifteen minutes and he chose to ignore us. When we walked past us, we asked him if we could place our order, he said "No", and walked away again. We decided to leave because he was so blatantly rude to us. The worst customer service I've ever experienced in any restaurant.

This is one of the best restaurants on the UWS. It combines what I consider to be the best attributes of a restaurant: Great food, low cost, small, and good atmosphere. The place feels laid-back. The lighting is not too bright. The food is incredible and healthy. The halibut is great. All this for a great price. Its a no brainer!

Cleste is that small nook in with big taste at look cost. From the homemade pasta to the wood oven made pizza everything was delish. Cleaned out plates and Will be back soon! You have to check it out. The place is small and tight but your giving up space to save money with the inexpensive prices. ( But hey this is Manhattan and we do that with our rent, or try to...!!!) You must try it coming from an Italian it is mmmm yumm! **
Note* it is cash only so be sure to stop by the atm before you go. My boyfriend and I had one pasta dish from the special and one pizza and ours came to $26, not big drinkers only had water. Just to give you somethign to base it on. Try it you will fall in love!

I would not recommend this place to anyone. All they care about is moving people in and out so they can make another dollar. Not to mention, they also served us the wrong bottle of wine, one that was significanlty more expensive but listed right above the one we ordered. It seems like they would do anything to make an extra dollar. There is much better Italian in the city.

After hearing from several people that Celeste is a must for Italian food lovers, I finally tried the small ristorante. There was a half hour wait for a table for two, but I was excited to see what the fuss is. Well, the waiter spoke broken English and gave the specials in 5 seconds. We had no idea what he said. He came back 20 seconds later for our orders and was annoyed b/c we weren't ready. We HAD TO ask for water, bread and olive oil. The eggplant appetizer was excellent and the veal with lemon sauce and cappers was terrific (but a little small in portion for an Italian restaurant). Our dishes were cleared quickly and the waiter asked if I wanted the check. I said, "we'd like to see the dessert menu." He was annoyed again. Since when doesn't a waiter try to sell dessert and coffee? The ricotta cheesecake was light and delicious, but the sorbet was very sweet. I don't know if I'd go back on a busy night b/c we were obviously rushed.

The food here is delicious and the prices are extremely reasonable. Despite the tiny size of the space the waits are not terrible- your meal here will be relatively quick even if you are having courses as this little spot is in high demand- so don't expect to have a long and leisurely meal. Despite this, Celeste is a lovely place to have an inexpensive, high quality meal, and even though you are likely to be inches away from the nearest table, a little wine and some candlelight makes for a romantic (though quick) meal.

You MUST try a cheese plate after dinner- the owner is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about cheese and will explain the plate as well as the processes by which they are made- YUM.

Pros: Great value, delicious food

Cons: A little crowded, usually a wait

.

Just a word of warning: never go to this restaurant unless you enjoy wasting your money, being treated poorly and being rushed out. The food was quite good and the wait staff was courteous but alas the owner is scrooge incarnate (and a chauvinist to boot). The owner was rude to us from the moment we sat down until he told us we had to leave because he had another table waiting, and this despite ordering the pricier entrees from the menu and a bottle of wine that we hadn't yet finished. Appalling.

Went here with a buddy after hearing some very nice things & glad we did. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was served fresh and in a timely manner. Everything we tasted was excellent. No room for dessert but there's always next time

Went to this based on the reviews here. Really not worth it. The food was mediocre at best (mushy pasta, and is it me or are the sauses canned), the staff was rude. Ruined an otherwise nice evening with friends.

We have been to this restaurant on numerous occasions. The service has always been bad, the space has always been cramped and hectic even by New York standards, the owner has always been discourteous, but until last night, the food and prices redeemed the place. My ravioli with butter and sage was drenched in oil and tasteless and her halibut came with some ill conceived deep fried potatos. The food at Celeste used to be wonderful, and perhaps they were having an off night, but it's just not worth the hassle.

My wife and I took my sister in law and hubby to Celeste after hearing so much about it. We had a wonderful time, the food was great and the service was superb! Our waiter, Marco is a charming young man, Italian/English, very polite, and extremely cultivated and gave us some great tips for our summer trip to Rome. Yes, it is a bit tight but it's just how I imagine eating in a Roman trattoria would be!

My wife and I jusy moved from Boston and heard about Celeste from acquaintances. We were given the usual warnings about the wait . It took about 15 minutes to get in at around 9pm on Thursday. The food was amazing. From the appetizers to marvolous breaded chicken dish with almonds that came with a mix salad with balsamic. We had a bottle of Montepulciano for only $27.We topped off the night with Tiramisu which is the best we've ever had.Celeste is a great experince I assure you will returning to soon!

as a frequent patron of celeste and a local west sider i am suprised by anybody who does not have a great exprience at this restaurant. While true it is crowded and cramped celeste filled a huge void in the neighborhood producing high quality authentic italian fare at extremelt affordable prices. The food is remarkably consistent and the pizza and pastas are some of the best i've had in any restaurant in NY. Keep up the good work. Bravo!

We've dined here about 4x, and each time the service has been pretty bad. I came back hoping that it was an off night, and I'd like to give it another chance since I live in the neighborhood. We are big fans of Bianca on the LES, which is owned by the same group...some menu items are even identical, yet Bianca's taste better. Every single time we've dined at Celeste, we're being rushed...the hostess is rude as can be, the waiters can't stop to check in, the busboys are flinging stuff on your table, and that's true even when the restaurant is half empty! The food is okay, but you'd be better off going to Bianca where the food is far superior, the host (George)is charming, the place itself is prettier, and the staff is always friendly even if it's busy all the time. No more chances for Celeste.

The dishes are small to me. My date and I each ordered an appitizer, a main dish, and a desert. With a bottle of wine.. the price no longer seemed like one dollar sign ($) at all! It was good but it was expensive. I didn't feel rushed but then again I don't thing I was there duringh peak times... The cramped space was a little annoying but it all seemed fun. I would go there if you haven't yet.. but I'm not going back.

My daughter invited my wife and me to join her boyfriend and another friend for dinner. We arrived at 6:00 and were cordially seated. After sitting in a cramped confined setting next to the kitchen, we finished our meal and were asked to vacate as there were people waiting for the table. Never, never have I been asked to leave before I was ready. I will never step foot in that place again, guest or paying. Outrageous.

I have to agree with many of the other posters. Don't pause for one second between bites because they are watching you! The second I put my fork down after finishing my entree, the plate vanished. We ordered dessert, but the whole vibe was hurry up and get out. The food is good, but not worth getting pushed out. And this guy is from Italy, where people linger over dinner for hours? Hard to believe.

The treatment the mananger gives to its costumers...may ruin your night. Service are always pushing you to finish quickly and complain when you ask for more food or drinks...! When I asked for an extra appetizer they told me that I could not do it because there are strict rules for ordering that you have to follow...basically order everything in the fisrt 5 minutes and then live...terrible service..

The worste treatment ever had. The owner is a jerk that desrespect his costumers. He scremed at my eldery mother when she asked (after an hour of waiting) how long we need to wait. Maybe he was too stressed, however he is not mature enough to run a business.

I had the same experience as the person below (same night too i guess!). i had been before and loved it. our waiter was fine till our plates were taken away then it was rush rush rush. one of us still had wine, so the others tried to order dessert drinks, but the owner told us no because there were people waiting and the waiter said if he served us more he would be fired. ridiculous. i'm a waitress and would never say such things to a customer. i think they felt we should have ordered more food, but i was stuffed after cheese, salad and pizza! so we sat there for a long time with nothing in front of us, shocked. i am never going back and telling everyone i know not to go there.

We went to Celeste for dinner and ordered a bottle of white wine (placed on the table without ice). We had no sooner put down our forks and finished our entrees when the check appeared. Now, I know better than to linger at a busy restaurant over a glass of water or a last few sips of wine. But we had a lot of wine left. We tried to drink as quickly as possible without actually making ourselves sick. Nonetheless, about 10 minutes later the waitress came over to our table and announced that could we please pay and leave, as many people were waiting. I was shocked. We paid our check and left. On the way out, I approached the manager, who said "I'm sorry you feel that way, but there are a lot of people waiting." This has NEVER happened to me in 10 years in New York.

I live around the corner from this place and every time I go the food is fantastic. Yes, there is a long wait but if you know this then you can just get there ahead of time. The service has always been great and although there is always a wait, I never feel rushed to get out of the restaurant. The menu is small so if you go more than once, you should try one of the specials - they are always fantastic. The process to put your name on the wait list can be a bit stressfull but the owner always seems to notice you and when he gets a chance he always comes over. This is really a great find - espcially for those who live close by!

In a city filled with Italian restaurants, it was refreshing to find one where the owner visits your table, speaking of his recent trip to Italy to collect cheeses for the platter you have an option of ordering. From the fried artichoke to the homemade pasta, there isn't a dud on the menu. Expect the authentic experience of "Ciao" being shouted across thye room, as the owner recognizes one of his regulars. You won't pay the hefty price of a trendy Trattoria, nor will you be disappointed. It's worth the wait there usually is since there are no reservations. Bellisima!!

The wait for a party of 5 on a Friday around 7pm was 25 minutes. The owner (Carmine) bounced around to chat, but on busy nights, be aggressive in getting his attention to put your name on the list. The dining area is very small but generally feels warm and welcoming. Pass the pizza and go for the pasta; thats what stood out during our visit for its fresh, homemade taste and $10 price tag. After dinner, the real fun was sipping coffee while Carmine took us on a journey around a cheese plate. Admittedly, there were some tastes we wouldnt mind skipping in future, but it was fun. By telling the wait staff ahead of time that we were going to order coffee & dessert, then ordering both at once, we avoided the rushed feeling some other patrons have mentioned. One warning cash only!

I can't understand why this place is so popular. I've tried 3 times. The pastas with tomato sauce are okay, but the pastas with olive oil are so DRENCHED in oil and butter i felt like i was choking. They really mess up a simple dish like spagetti a la vongole which is supposed to be light.

I went to Celeste knowing it was going to be good, but I was absolutely bowled over by everything from the food to Carmine himself. The warmth and ease was the perfect complement to the stunning food (try the fried artichoke!) and the perfect pizza, finished off by a delectably perfect (and smuggled!) cheese plate. Trust Carmine with your entire meal and you won't be sorry.

The food is relatively good for what you pay. The place is crowded and they have a rude and annoying policy of bringing you the check along with the cheese, hoping that you clear the table as soon as possible. If you order a desert or coffee after the cheese, they will tell you it's not possible since they have already brought you the check. When you say you didn't ask for the check, they speak with the owner, and say that this time they are going to make an exception, however, you must eat fast since there are people waiting! The food is not worth this treatment! You are better off somewhere else. I am certainly not going back!

Love the well-priced authentic food here. Excellent cheese plates too. Wish the space were less cramped but I suppose that is the trade-off for keeping the prices so low.
